Gendry is not a Baratheon. He is technically a Waters (for being born in the Crownlands from a highborn father) but does not even have his bastard name because Robert never officially acknowledged him.

+Kysfallen The irony is that, Jeoffry with no blood of the former king sits on the throne, while the king has bastard sons that Cersei wanted dead and why? They have rights to the throne? Maybe. But since Melisandre told Gendry that he is a son of a king and his blood is important, I smell an ending to the series with Gendry as a king and Arya as the queen in the end, though it may sound absurd.
I actually think it's funny how many people are saying "they cannot marry because he's a bastard" ....HA! like that could actually stop Arya. If Arya wanted to be with Gendry no nobility nonsense would stop her. She would just get married in front of a Heart Tree like Robb did, with the blessing of the Old Gods, or she would just run away with him.

I think what it is is that he may want her to be his family, his lady, but he knows that she doesn’t want to be anyone’s lady and never has wanted that. He says this not only because it’s what he wants, but because he knows it’s what she doesn’t want. It’ll convince her to let him go more easily. It reminds her of what she wants. On another note I hope what she wants has changed since then or will change when they see each other again in season 8 bc I ship them so hard.

Does anyone one remember back to the beginning in the books? Robert was meant to marry Lyanna Stark and join the two great house together in love and peace. But she died and Robert married Cersei. And then Robert tried to join Sansa and Joffery together and we all know how that turned out. Ned, himself said that Arya reminded him of Lyanna and when he met Gendry in King's Landing he was reminded of a young Robert Baratheon. I feel that the relationship between Arya and Gendry is a way of balancing out, finally after all this time these two houses can be joined together by love.. 💙 Arya & Gendry Forever 💙
FredRBP I just suggested that the two houses could be joined together just as it was originally intended whether by marriage or friendship. Just as Robert and Ned were like brothers, Arya and Gendry could be like brother and sister looking out for each other, protecting each other. It doesn't have to be a romantic love it could just be a brotherly/sisterly love ( NOT like Cersei and Jaime) ....Either way I ship these two as a power couple to be reckoned with
This is one of my favorite scene of these two, even if that line isn't romantic at all. Gendry is saying that he is no worthy of her. It's sad, actually. It's how I feel everytime I watch this scene. He thinks they cannot be a family... But actually I think that maybe they could. Arya doesn't care of duty, honor, highborns or lowborns. If she wants him, she takes him. They could simply run away and stay together. Cannot wait to read the next book to find out if Arya and Gendry will be reunited.

I think one of the reasons why they let Joe Dempsie go for a little while was so they could let Maisie grow up a bit and catch up with him. Well she has so let's see their reunion in season 7. :)
Exactly. When I started reading the books I thought "Okay, ignore this. Hopefully no one brings this up it to that sadist Martin and maybe...just maybe, I will get a great badass couple to root for." Then as the book went on I thought "Oh no...it's obvious how glorious they are together.. Everyone I like dies.....I like both these characters.....I'll go get the tissues right now". Still waiting for George R.R. Martin to rip my heart out again and stomp on it...again.
What I think is that he didn't mean "you'd be m'lady" as "you'd be my woman", but he meant to say her she was a lady, had pure blood in her veins, and he could only serve her. Still, I think that there is a romantic shade in this scene. How they look to each other, I mean. So I think it's like Gendry is telling Arya to let him go because their "friendship" can't work. And he's sad about it - just look at his expression at the end.
When arya says "I can be your family",why does it sound like a sad "I love you" :( . I honestly think she is sorta in love with him,anyway its more than just friendship and certainly not just a brother-sister thing.
Yeah same! In the books, jon and arya are shown thinking of eachother alot and they sortof fall for the person that resmebles the other the most. Like ygritte is alot like arya,fearless and very daring and gendry is like jon in the very caring and manly way.I wana see them reunited with eachother aswell. Even as a bastard it makes him the last Baratheon left. I think there's a law somewhere that says if he's the last one he becomes legitimised. That's why Cersei wanted them all dead.

As sad as this scene was, he was 100% right. They would never be allowed to be a family once she was back with her family. With any luck they would be allowed to be in each other's presence, especially once she 'flowered'. And he also knows that as a highborn lady she would be shipped off sooner than later for marriage and he wouldn't even be able to follow her there. He would be a servant and wouldn't even have her.
The guy only wanted a family, to be loved, and to love. She offered that, but then she...... rejected him once he took her up on that offer. Season 8 was such a joke.

People are wrongly interpreting what he said..he didn't mean he would marry her, he means he would have to serve her, because she's a high born and he is a bastard peasant. She wouldn't be his family, she would be his lady.
Actually no, he wouldn't have to serve her just because she's a high born and that's also not what Arya expects from him but he simply can't feel as an equal next to her at certain circumstances and that would be very stressful for Gendry. Thus to become a family from their part is nearly impossible, brother/sister or wife/husband doesn't really matter at that point. Could work though if they weren't in Westeros where status means everything.
+Daemon Targaryen I didn't say he would be her personal servant, I said he would technically be her subject as he's a lowborn and she's a member of one of the great houses of the realm. It's a feudal society all people are subjects to the lords and ladies and all lords are subjects to their leige lords and the crown. So yes he would technically be her servant.
When I first saw this scene, I knew it was setting up Stark+ Baratheon union. Between "let's unite our houses" to Arya saying "I'll be your family", it's pretty much a set up for this to eventually happen.
Wedla Melo I was saying the actress, as you can see. Olenna and Margeary are related right? When Dianna Rigg was young, she looked very much alike what Natalie Dormer looks like now, which would be the case if they were actually related. But they (the actresses) are not while the characters are.
aaaaaaah, when arya goes "i can be your family" her voice gets so small and it's so heartbreaking. i read in a rolling stone interview she was told to say that line like "i love you." in the books, arya/gendry is hinted at and their age gap is about five years, not that big, especially considering other couples in the series. the interpretation i believe in this scene is that gendry means if he returns with arya to her family then they can longer be as close as they were. "you'd be m'lady" is him saying she would once again be recognized as noble lady stark (princess of the north actually) and he would just be a low born bastard smith and their relationship would be different. she wouldn't be his friend, she's be his lady, his superior, and they would have to act that way. in the book, when upset with arya, gendry has used that high born card on her when upset, saying that she must think she's too good for him. just some thoughts.....
For all those saying that Arya's been M'Lady-zoned, please read up on courtly love and exactly what it meant to medieval society. In both the books and the show, there is a definite chemistry happening between Arya and Gendry, and there is some foreshadowing of a future romantic relationship, although GRRM might make these out to pull our heartstrings even more when he brings on inevitable tragedy. He's set up a similar situation between Sansa and the Hound, as he is from a lesser station in society than her, but would definitely become her champion. It is especially interesting that most of the foreshadowing GRRM's built in is very dreamlike, and in some literal cases (Sansa again) actually in dreams. I think the show skipped over the bit at Acorn Hall where Arya wears the acorn dress while Tom sings this very romantic song about a proper young lord who loves a rebellious forest sprite. This read as very surreal, just as many of Arya's POV's tend to be. She ripped the dress while in a tussle with Gendry. That's got to be symbolic.

RansomRose77 She is Noble born and he is a commoner. They can not marry. He is not even considered the Kings bastard because the King never acknowledged him. A noblemans bastard in the real world might have been given important roles and even knighted by his father and so considdered a gentleman but never a Noble. If he was born out of wedlock to both noble parents then he could claim nobility of some sort. But if his parents are a Noble and a commoner he reverts to the lowest common denominator.

elanor2006 Elenor, If the Medieval Nobility/Aristocracy rules on Game of Thrones are what they were on earth, and they seem to be, Arya most certainly would not be able to marry anyone she wanted to. She would have to marry who her parents or her liege lord told her to. Or run away. In many cases Noble males were also told who to marry by superior lords. If they refused they could be ruined politically. Noblewomen, and Arya was a very high ranking noblewoman, were too valuable to be allowed to do whatever they wanted. Arya was the daughter of what we would call a Duke or an Earl. A powerful Nobleman with his own army and his own house of subservient nobles. A man who was lord over a small country with many castles and many estates ruled by Barons and Knights in his name. A man only answerable to the king himself. Arya's potential male children would be lords over many inferior Northern Lords who would owe fealty to her male offspring. That makes Arya a great prize for the king to hand out to a Lord to cement an alliance or reward one of the faithful. Marrying Arya would make a lower lord into a rich and powerful Noble.

I think the issue is that Gendry acknowledges that he is a bastard born. He loves Arya but he is afraid that his blood and status is not worth a highborn such as her, therefore he pushes her away so she doesn't make the mistake of falling in love with a bastard since bastards are looked down upon in Westeros.
I never said they were in love, I said they had chemistry. Perhaps in the end Lyanna chose Rhaegar, but she was betrothed to Robert. Just because it didn't work out doesn't mean there was nothing there. It's implied throughout the books that Arya is similar to Lyanna and that Gendry takes after Robert. I believe their relationships would be similar. Robert had deep love for Lyanna, whilst Lyanna respected Robert's strength, if not his promiscuity.
When did Lyanna show any sign of respect to Robert? They got engaged from the far because Robert and Ned grew up together and the Houses wanted to strengthen their bonds. The only one thinking Lyanna got feelings for Robert or any liking at all was Robert himself. Also, the love between Lyanna and Rhaegar is often described in the books by various characters, whereas - again - only Robert talks and thinks about his "perfect match". You try to see a similarity there, but there is none. How about we see Arya and Gendry as the last possibility of marriage between the Houses? Lyanna/Rhaegar - failed, Sansa/Joffrey - failed, but Arya/Gendry - they still have a small chance. Maybe Ned and Robert will share their blood after all. :)
The relationship between Arya and Gendry is not coincidence, it's deliberate aspect of the plot. The books and the show are very clearly exploring the relationship between these 2 characters, who in essence are similar to their Aunt and Father. Yes, they will be different, but the books and the show often comment on how similar they both are to Lyanna and Robert. Considering the relationship between Arya and Gendry and the fact that Robert and Lyanna were betrothed to each other (even if it was arranged), I think it's safe to assume their was some spark between them, even if it was not a deep connection. You are right the books give very little away about Robert and Lyanna's relationship, but that works both ways. It is true that Ned commented on Lyanna's feelings towards Robert's promiscuity, but everyone has doubts about their relationships. Read around Catelyn's concerns about Ned before they truly knew one another. If you had only read those and knew nothing else about them, would you assume Ned and Catelyn had no chemistry? I never said I believed they were right for each other though. Many people are attracted to people that aren't right for them, that doesn't mean the chemistry doesn't exist.
Sam Richards You never see Gendry drinking, you don't see him partying, you don't see him whoring. He was with one woman and that woman was throwing herself at him. Robert is very different in that matter. Also, I do think Gendry is more clever and has more empathy than Robert ever had. They may look alike (theoretically), but I don't see any other similarities. Lyanna and Arya have also not that much in common. Yes, they are both wild and hotheads, but Lyanna had was wiser and had a huge crush on Rhaegar, whereas Arya keeps her distance to men and women alike. Arya is completely driven by her negative feelings, Lyanna follows her positive ones. Arya admires figthers, Lyanna chose a philosopher. Arya would probably laugh at Rhaegar. Catelyn had mixed feelings because she didn't know him or talk to him at all before, and because she was engaged to his brother. It was difficult to focus on Ned all of the sudden and there was no real "chemistry" between them in the beginning (it had to grow with time), but she never had negative feelings towards him and even believes that marriages like that are better and more stable than those out of passion. But do you really compare Ned and Robert relationship-wise? They are both soldiers, both blind to the scheming of their surroundings - and that is all they really share. Otherwise, they are opposites. I have the feeling you try to force Robert's character onto Gendry and Lyanna's onto Arya in order to have a smooth comparison. But that's kinda lazy and naive, tbh. No hard feelings. But not even Robert describes any chemistry at all that you desperately want to make up. He just idealized her from the far, nothing else. If you can quote any line where Lyanna is described to do any contrary action, gesture, etc., you're welcome to share it.

@Niki Reech A mix of both, mostly sibling/budding romance sort of way. I read the books, there are several scenes where Gendry expresses anger because he does not believe Arya thinks of him as an equal. Of course she has never done anything to him to suggest that, but he's dealt with so many high borns and has been surrounded by so much misconception of high families, that he harbors a sort of resentment. In the books, Arya is 11 almost 12 and Gendry is about 15/16, Arya has to realize the sexual part of herself (be it simple romance or otherwise) and Gendry just wants to smith. The author pretty much labels their relationship as a "could be" but the timing is just off. This moment should be seen as a close bond between two people.
He says "You would be Milady (or M'lady)" like "I will be your servant", 'cause he's actually on a lower level of hierarchy than she is. So they can never actually be a family.
They are just so cute together! If they were to be together they would be the best friends turned lovers relationship. Right now they are still in the sibling/best friend stage but if they meet again when Arya is an adult then I swear there would be sparks. It's the potential that has me shipping them.

I've only recently started to watch the series. As soon as I saw the chemistry between these two, I looked up Gendry to see if he got killed (I'm only up to season 2, but know a lot of major players die along the way). Convenient that he's disappeared. And with this line "You would be my lady", pretty good proof they'll be matched up near the end. Most viewers have all but forgotten him -- and Arya was just a little girl here. It's doubtful many people were even thinking future coupling in this scene, especially since the way Gendry says the line he is pointing out their class differences.
Show is deviating from the book pretty heavy now. could totally see them getting together in later seasons especially since he is about to learn he is technically royalty himself (just like spaceballs!!!). There are a few instances in which Gendry is proven to be the only thing that stops Arya from going off the deep end (he stopped her from killing the hound when she had the chance). he is a good balancer for her and will probably help save her humanity. plus she is OBVIOUSLY into him (even more so in the book when she remarks on how strong he is). "I have a son, you have a daughter, we'll join our houses" -- King Robert Baratheon his freaking self (tongue planted firmly in cheek btw).
I don't know if she's into him. She says he's strong, ok. She also thought of Jaqen Hghar as a "handsome man". I think she's too young to develop a crush. I mean, she's 9 when she meets Gendry.
kingdom come I never had a crush at 9. I started having them at 11. I may be a little abnormal about that, but Arya is too. At 9 her sister was already in love with Joffrey and all Arya could think about was fencing. So, yeah.
Moby Dick ... 9-11 is just 2 years difference... how old are you now 15-16? Still too young to really understand. So you do remember your first crush?... whatever age it might have been. I'm fairly certain sansa was older than 9 when she met Joffrey. I'm pretty sure she was 12-13yrs old. Have to go back and look. Try not to compare your self to someone's fictitious character. Be yourself, greater than any character ever written, because you are real.
kingdom come Moby Dick actually, Sansa was 11 when she was originally betrothed to Joff, the tv show simply aged up on the characters to fit to more modern ideals. Arya was 9 at the beginning of the first book. Gendry is four years older than Arya, so he would have been 13 at the time of the beginning of the whole story. They don't show time elapse in the tv show because (hello) it takes MONTHS to travel from Kings Landing to Winterfell, or anywhere else in the Seven Kingdoms. By the time Arya meets Gendry, I would say she's about 11 and he's 15 (he is of an age to be considered a man by the time he is being sent to the Wall, and in this universe that means 15-16). Also on the note of appropriate ages for crush development, remember that this is similar to medieval Earth. People usually had shorter lifespans and were often betrothed as young children. Kids grew up a lot faster and were expected to be married in early teens and reproducing. Daenerys was only 13 when she was married off to Drogo, as it clearly states in the book that she is pregnant with Drogo's child and caressing her little baby bump on her 14th birthday.

But they haven't gotten that far. My guess, taking it from my impressions while I read the book is that yes, Gendry makes the same mistake his father does. He feels something for Arya, I wouldn't call it love but a little crush. In the sense of "this girl, when she grows up, is going to make me fall in love". Arya, however, is too young to understand "sexual tension" or romance, she's barely 9. She doesn't want Gendry to leave her because every friend she's ever had has either died or left her at some point. That's actually what she thinks in the book: "He plans on leaving me too"

They are friends until now, there is NO romance between them. And that's good, what with a 9 year old and a 15 year old having a "romance". Let's be a little pragmatic too, Gendry didn't just do it because "He was going to be separated from Arya anyway", he did want to become a knight and he knew that with a Highborn lord he would never have the chance because he would be always a bastard in his sight. The brotherhood, however, welcomed anyone who came to it. So, Gendry had that on his side and he stayed with them because it benefited him. He had attempted to do the same to Arya in Harrenhall. She tried to convince him of helping her releasing her brother's army and he said to her that he already had a good job as a smith and he didn't want to mess it up. So, he basically said to her "Sorry, I'm good and I plan on staying here, I'm not going to get involved in your highborn girl shite."
Moby Dick Just because they are not in love it doesn't mean that the scene didn't have romantic connotations. Whether they were aware of it or not is debatable. I myself believe that they are not aware of what they feel and honestly, considering all the shit happening, it's not even a priority for them. Now, the show kind of pushed for a romantic vibe, whether the book fans liked it or not. As you well know, in the show they decided to make some characters older to avoid the creepiness. Arya is not 9, she's around 12. And, generally speaking, in the GOT reality people become adults at a much younger age. When you're 15 you start a family and go to war. Girls are married off as soon as they can procreate. I would avoid comparing the character's ages to our own. And in my OP I was simply clarifying what Gendry meant with his line. Gendry admitting how conflicted he was over having to lose her because of their status was romantic. You can be romantic with someone without being in love with them, unintentionally or not.
I like how there's a lot of potential things at play during this scene. Gendry seems to have a more mature/pubescent understanding as to what it would be if he and Arya would to be a as 'family' that Aryas does not perhaps herself fully realise. I think this scene does a very good job as how even as a child, Gendry is very important to her, and it seems to hint at misunderstood romantic feelings from the child tomboy that is Arya. But then again, it could also just be a very sweet parting.

Why do people compare Arya&Gendry to Lyanna&Robert in the comments? The only thing those two couples have in common is the Houses they represent (although Gendry is not a legitimate Baratheon yet). Arya and Gendry's story is completely different than Lyanna and Robert's, and I'm glad that Gendry (besides the physical looks) is nothing like Robert.
The one thing that he's overlooking is that people can be made knights and lords. Arya Stark belongs to one of the great houses of Westeros, if anyone can make it happen... and he'd be choosing to serve Robb.
I think there is a double entendre in the phrase "you'd be milady". One, she would literally always be of higher status then him and if he were to join Robb, he would be a smith and she would be a lady. Two, she could never be like family for him because he sees her as his lady--so cute! I read it somewhere that when Maisie said "i'd be your family" she was directed to make it sound like she was saying "i love you"
@@usul573 Yeah, but this probably doesn't count since GRRM has nothing to do with the show anymore really. It's not her I am that afraid for right now, she still has some plot armor left (still needs to see Melissandre again), Gendry has nothing. Unless they are planning on giving him the throne, which is highly unlikely, he has really served his purpose as part of the story. Although I saw a screenshot of an interview the actor did where he possibly unintentionally revealed his fate atleast in the battle. But I won't spoil it.
How much foreshadowing is this that Robert Baratheon's last wish that his House and Ned's House would join one day. Joffrey was a fake Baratheon however Gendry is more like Robert than any of his brothers however he has compassion and no anger which would make him a good person to revive House Baratheon. I do think Arya will end up with Gendry just from this and what they have been through since this scene. Arya has so much anger and darkness in her and I believe Gendry can be the one to show her the light probably the same one that Robert seen in Lyanna. Although Robert was a womaniser you cannot deny that he was deeply in love with Lyanna and would have tried ever so hard to stay faithful to her if they did end up together.
My guess is that if these two ever meet again, it wont be until Maisie is 18, then there would be more options for them as a couple. Couldn't have happened before , not because Arya wasn't of age, but because maisie wasn't, and Joe was. Once they are both adults, romance could possibly be added. (Not sex tho. The audience doesn't want to see Maisie, or Sophie , in a sex scene. They are our little girls. )
the people who originally built storms end before it was given to the baratheons, I've always thought arya had a lot in common with, and the baratheons are descended from those people, so I guess it makes sense that she become lady of their house ;P

Does anyone one remember back to the beginning in the books? Robert was meant to marry Lyanna Stark and join the two great house together in love and peace. But she died and Robert married Cersei. And then Robert tried to join Sansa and Joffery together and we all know how that turned out. Ned, himself said that Arya reminded him of Lyanna and when he met Gendry in King's Landing he was reminded of a young Robert Baratheon. I feel that the relationship between Arya and Gendry is a way of balancing out, finally after all this time these two houses can be joined together by love..

This is one of my favorite scene of these two, even if that line isn't romantic at all. Gendry is saying that he is no worthy of her. It's sad, actually. It's how I feel everytime I watch this scene. He thinks they cannot be a family... But actually I think that maybe they could. Arya doesn't care of duty, honor, highborns or lowborns. If she wants him, she takes him. They could simply run away and stay together. Cannot wait to read the next book to find out if Arya and Gendry will be reunited.
That would be beautiful, for them to run away and stay together. But the last time that happened... well, the greatest dynasty the known world had ever seen was toppled, and tens of thousands died because Rhaegar loved his Lyanna! (You know, assuming R+L=J is true and they did love each other.)

What I think is that he didn't mean "you'd be m'lady" as "you'd be my woman", but he meant to say her she was a lady, had pure blood in her veins, and he could only serve her. Still, I think that there is a romantic shade in this scene. How they look to each other, I mean. So I think it's like Gendry is telling Arya to let him go because their "friendship" can't work. And he's sad about it - just look at his expression at the end.

And he also knows that as a highborn lady she would be shipped off sooner than later for marriage and he wouldn't even be able to follow her there. He would be a servant and wouldn't even have her.

Actually no, he wouldn't have to serve her just because she's a high born and that's also not what Arya expects from him but he simply can't feel as an equal next to her at certain circumstances and that would be very stressful for Gendry. Thus to become a family from their part is nearly impossible, brother/sister or wife/husband doesn't really matter at that point. Could work though if they weren't in Westeros where status means everything.
+Daemon Targaryen I didn't say he would be her personal servant, I said he would technically be her subject as he's a lowborn and she's a member of one of the great houses of the realm. It's a feudal society all people are subjects to the lords and ladies and all lords are subjects to their leige lords and the crown. So yes he would technically be her servant.

When I first saw this scene, I knew it was setting up Stark+ Baratheon union. Between "let's unite our houses" to Arya saying "I'll be your family", it's pretty much a set up for this to eventually happen.

aaaaaaah, when arya goes "i can be your family" her voice gets so small and it's so heartbreaking. i read in a rolling stone interview she was told to say that line like "i love you."
in the books, arya/gendry is hinted at and their age gap is about five years, not that big, especially considering other couples in the series.
the interpretation i believe in this scene is that gendry means if he returns with arya to her family then they can longer be as close as they were. "you'd be m'lady" is him saying she would once again be recognized as noble lady stark (princess of the north actually) and he would just be a low born bastard smith and their relationship would be different. she wouldn't be his friend, she's be his lady, his superior, and they would have to act that way. in the book, when upset with arya, gendry has used that high born card on her when upset, saying that she must think she's too good for him.

For all those saying that Arya's been M'Lady-zoned, please read up on courtly love and exactly what it meant to medieval society. In both the books and the show, there is a definite chemistry happening between Arya and Gendry, and there is some foreshadowing of a future romantic relationship, although GRRM might make these out to pull our heartstrings even more when he brings on inevitable tragedy. He's set up a similar situation between Sansa and the Hound, as he is from a lesser station in society than her, but would definitely become her champion.
It is especially interesting that most of the foreshadowing GRRM's built in is very dreamlike, and in some literal cases (Sansa again) actually in dreams. I think the show skipped over the bit at Acorn Hall where Arya wears the acorn dress while Tom sings this very romantic song about a proper young lord who loves a rebellious forest sprite. This read as very surreal, just as many of Arya's POV's tend to be. She ripped the dress while in a tussle with Gendry. That's got to be symbolic.

A noblemans bastard in the real world might have been given important roles and even knighted by his father and so considdered a gentleman but never a Noble. If he was born out of wedlock to both noble parents then he could claim nobility of some sort. But if his parents are a Noble and a commoner he reverts to the lowest common denominator.

In many cases Noble males were also told who to marry by superior lords. If they refused they could be ruined politically.
Noblewomen, and Arya was a very high ranking noblewoman, were too valuable to be allowed to do whatever they wanted. Arya was the daughter of what we would call a Duke or an Earl. A powerful Nobleman with his own army and his own house of subservient nobles. A man who was lord over a small country with many castles and many estates ruled by Barons and Knights in his name. A man only answerable to the king himself.
Arya's potential male children would be lords over many inferior Northern Lords who would owe fealty to her male offspring. That makes Arya a great prize for the king to hand out to a Lord to cement an alliance or reward one of the faithful. Marrying Arya would make a lower lord into a rich and powerful Noble.

I think the issue is that Gendry acknowledges that he is a bastard born. He loves Arya but he is afraid that his blood and status is not worth a highborn such as her, therefore he pushes her away so she doesn't make the mistake of falling in love with a bastard since bastards are looked down upon in Westeros.

We don't actually know this. We know Lyanna wasn't happy with Robert, but don't just assume she was in love with Rhaegar.
I never said they were in love, I said they had chemistry. Perhaps in the end Lyanna chose Rhaegar, but she was betrothed to Robert. Just because it didn't work out doesn't mean there was nothing there.
It's implied throughout the books that Arya is similar to Lyanna and that Gendry takes after Robert. I believe their relationships would be similar. Robert had deep love for Lyanna, whilst Lyanna respected Robert's strength, if not his promiscuity.
When did Lyanna show any sign of respect to Robert? They got engaged from the far because Robert and Ned grew up together and the Houses wanted to strengthen their bonds. The only one thinking Lyanna got feelings for Robert or any liking at all was Robert himself. Also, the love between Lyanna and Rhaegar is often described in the books by various characters, whereas - again - only Robert talks and thinks about his "perfect match".
You try to see a similarity there, but there is none. How about we see Arya and Gendry as the last possibility of marriage between the Houses? Lyanna/Rhaegar - failed, Sansa/Joffrey - failed, but Arya/Gendry - they still have a small chance. Maybe Ned and Robert will share their blood after all. :)
The relationship between Arya and Gendry is not coincidence, it's deliberate aspect of the plot. The books and the show are very clearly exploring the relationship between these 2 characters, who in essence are similar to their Aunt and Father. Yes, they will be different, but the books and the show often comment on how similar they both are to Lyanna and Robert. Considering the relationship between Arya and Gendry and the fact that Robert and Lyanna were betrothed to each other (even if it was arranged), I think it's safe to assume their was some spark between them, even if it was not a deep connection.
You are right the books give very little away about Robert and Lyanna's relationship, but that works both ways. It is true that Ned commented on Lyanna's feelings towards Robert's promiscuity, but everyone has doubts about their relationships. Read around Catelyn's concerns about Ned before they truly knew one another. If you had only read those and knew nothing else about them, would you assume Ned and Catelyn had no chemistry?
I never said I believed they were right for each other though. Many people are attracted to people that aren't right for them, that doesn't mean the chemistry doesn't exist.
Sam Richards You never see Gendry drinking, you don't see him partying, you don't see him whoring. He was with one woman and that woman was throwing herself at him. Robert is very different in that matter. Also, I do think Gendry is more clever and has more empathy than Robert ever had. They may look alike (theoretically), but I don't see any other similarities.
Lyanna and Arya have also not that much in common. Yes, they are both wild and hotheads, but Lyanna had was wiser and had a huge crush on Rhaegar, whereas Arya keeps her distance to men and women alike. Arya is completely driven by her negative feelings, Lyanna follows her positive ones. Arya admires figthers, Lyanna chose a philosopher. Arya would probably laugh at Rhaegar.
Catelyn had mixed feelings because she didn't know him or talk to him at all before, and because she was engaged to his brother. It was difficult to focus on Ned all of the sudden and there was no real "chemistry" between them in the beginning (it had to grow with time), but she never had negative feelings towards him and even believes that marriages like that are better and more stable than those out of passion.
But do you really compare Ned and Robert relationship-wise? They are both soldiers, both blind to the scheming of their surroundings - and that is all they really share. Otherwise, they are opposites.
I have the feeling you try to force Robert's character onto Gendry and Lyanna's onto Arya in order to have a smooth comparison. But that's kinda lazy and naive, tbh. No hard feelings. But not even Robert describes any chemistry at all that you desperately want to make up. He just idealized her from the far, nothing else. If you can quote any line where Lyanna is described to do any contrary action, gesture, etc., you're welcome to share it.

A mix of both, mostly sibling/budding romance sort of way. I read the books, there are several scenes where Gendry expresses anger because he does not believe Arya thinks of him as an equal. Of course she has never done anything to him to suggest that, but he's dealt with so many high borns and has been surrounded by so much misconception of high families, that he harbors a sort of resentment. In the books, Arya is 11 almost 12 and Gendry is about 15/16, Arya has to realize the sexual part of herself (be it simple romance or otherwise) and Gendry just wants to smith. The author pretty much labels their relationship as a "could be" but the timing is just off. This moment should be seen as a close bond between two people.
This scene aged so well.
Gendry better finally show up after that crazy amount of rowing in season 7.

I've only recently started to watch the series. As soon as I saw the chemistry between these two, I looked up Gendry to see if he got killed (I'm only up to season 2, but know a lot of major players die along the way). Convenient that he's disappeared. And with this line "You would be my lady", pretty good proof they'll be matched up near the end. Most viewers have all but forgotten him -- and Arya was just a little girl here. It's doubtful many people were even thinking future coupling in this scene, especially since the way Gendry says the line he is pointing out their class differences.

Show is deviating from the book pretty heavy now. could totally see them getting together in later seasons especially since he is about to learn he is technically royalty himself (just like spaceballs!!!). There are a few instances in which Gendry is proven to be the only thing that stops Arya from going off the deep end (he stopped her from killing the hound when she had the chance). he is a good balancer for her and will probably help save her humanity. plus she is OBVIOUSLY into him (even more so in the book when she remarks on how strong he is).

I'm fairly certain sansa was older than 9 when she met Joffrey. I'm pretty sure she was 12-13yrs old. Have to go back and look. Try not to compare your self to someone's fictitious character. Be yourself, greater than any character ever written, because you are real.
kingdom come Moby Dick actually, Sansa was 11 when she was originally betrothed to Joff, the tv show simply aged up on the characters to fit to more modern ideals. Arya was 9 at the beginning of the first book. Gendry is four years older than Arya, so he would have been 13 at the time of the beginning of the whole story. They don't show time elapse in the tv show because (hello) it takes MONTHS to travel from Kings Landing to Winterfell, or anywhere else in the Seven Kingdoms. By the time Arya meets Gendry, I would say she's about 11 and he's 15 (he is of an age to be considered a man by the time he is being sent to the Wall, and in this universe that means 15-16).
Also on the note of appropriate ages for crush development, remember that this is similar to medieval Earth. People usually had shorter lifespans and were often betrothed as young children. Kids grew up a lot faster and were expected to be married in early teens and reproducing. Daenerys was only 13 when she was married off to Drogo, as it clearly states in the book that she is pregnant with Drogo's child and caressing her little baby bump on her 14th birthday.
When I first watched this scene, I thought it was a romantic "My lady." But now I realize Gendry is implying he will have to formally call Arya "My lady" because he will always be lower than her.

But they haven't gotten that far. My guess, taking it from my impressions while I read the book is that yes, Gendry makes the same mistake his father does. He feels something for Arya, I wouldn't call it love but a little crush. In the sense of "this girl, when she grows up, is going to make me fall in love". Arya, however, is too young to understand "sexual tension" or romance, she's barely 9. She doesn't want Gendry to leave her because every friend she's ever had has either died or left her at some point. That's actually what she thinks in the book: "He plans on leaving me too"

This scene was about Gendry feeling like he was not good enough, he thought he was going to eventually leave her, his only friend, because there was no way someone like him could join her world. So he left first instead.

They are friends until now, there is NO romance between them. And that's good, what with a 9 year old and a 15 year old having a "romance". Let's be a little pragmatic too, Gendry didn't just do it because "He was going to be separated from Arya anyway", he did want to become a knight and he knew that with a Highborn lord he would never have the chance because he would be always a bastard in his sight. The brotherhood, however, welcomed anyone who came to it. So, Gendry had that on his side and he stayed with them because it benefited him. He had attempted to do the same to Arya in Harrenhall. She tried to convince him of helping her releasing her brother's army and he said to her that he already had a good job as a smith and he didn't want to mess it up. So, he basically said to her "Sorry, I'm good and I plan on staying here, I'm not going to get involved in your highborn girl shite."

I myself believe that they are not aware of what they feel and honestly, considering all the shit happening, it's not even a priority for them.

As you well know, in the show they decided to make some characters older to avoid the creepiness. Arya is not 9, she's around 12. And, generally speaking, in the GOT reality people become adults at a much younger age. When you're 15 you start a family and go to war. Girls are married off as soon as they can procreate. I would avoid comparing the character's ages to our own.
And in my OP I was simply clarifying what Gendry meant with his line.
Gendry admitting how conflicted he was over having to lose her because of their status was romantic.
You can be romantic with someone without being in love with them, unintentionally or not.
I like how there's a lot of potential things at play during this scene. Gendry seems to have a more mature/pubescent understanding as to what it would be if he and Arya would to be a as 'family' that Aryas does not perhaps herself fully realise. I think this scene does a very good job as how even as a child, Gendry is very important to her, and it seems to hint at misunderstood romantic feelings from the child tomboy that is Arya. But then again, it could also just be a very sweet parting.

Why do people compare Arya&Gendry to Lyanna&Robert in the comments? The only thing those two couples have in common is the Houses they represent (although Gendry is not a legitimate Baratheon yet). Arya and Gendry's story is completely different than Lyanna and Robert's, and I'm glad that Gendry (besides the physical looks) is nothing like Robert.
The one thing that he's overlooking is that people can be made knights and lords. Arya Stark belongs to one of the great houses of Westeros, if anyone can make it happen... and he'd be choosing to serve Robb.
I think there is a double entendre in the phrase "you'd be milady". One, she would literally always be of higher status then him and if he were to join Robb, he would be a smith and she would be a lady. Two, she could never be like family for him because he sees her as his lady--so cute! I read it somewhere that when Maisie said "i'd be your family" she was directed to make it sound like she was saying "i love you"

It's not her I am that afraid for right now, she still has some plot armor left (still needs to see Melissandre again), Gendry has nothing. Unless they are planning on giving him the throne, which is highly unlikely, he has really served his purpose as part of the story.
Although I saw a screenshot of an interview the actor did where he possibly unintentionally revealed his fate atleast in the battle. But I won't spoil it.

How much foreshadowing is this that Robert Baratheon's last wish that his House and Ned's House would join one day. Joffrey was a fake Baratheon however Gendry is more like Robert than any of his brothers however he has compassion and no anger which would make him a good person to revive House Baratheon. I do think Arya will end up with Gendry just from this and what they have been through since this scene. Arya has so much anger and darkness in her and I believe Gendry can be the one to show her the light probably the same one that Robert seen in Lyanna. Although Robert was a womaniser you cannot deny that he was deeply in love with Lyanna and would have tried ever so hard to stay faithful to her if they did end up together.
My guess is that if these two ever meet again, it wont be until Maisie is 18, then there would be more options for them as a couple. Couldn't have happened before , not because Arya wasn't of age, but because maisie wasn't, and Joe was. Once they are both adults, romance could possibly be added. (Not sex tho. The audience doesn't want to see Maisie, or Sophie , in a sex scene. They are our little girls. )

the people who originally built storms end before it was given to the baratheons, I've always thought arya had a lot in common with, and the baratheons are descended from those people, so I guess it makes sense that she become lady of their house ;P
