    If you have no water flow or your hot tub pump is just humming, test your pump capacitor and that just might be the problem.

    Testing a capacitor is very important.

    I felt that this video was perfect. And it has given me the confidence to test out my capacitor on a pump that just hums (and won't turn).

    Most multimeters can test capacitance too, so you don't necessarily need a specific tool.
    The unit is micro farads. That weird u (I forgot the Greek name) is the metric symbol for micro. And capital F is farads.
    Thanks for the video! Helped me fix my pump!

    Yours is the video I've been searching for (found many focusing on the "wet end" when I was suspecting the capacitor). Will start out attempting to spin the motor with a screwdriver (not sure if possible on a 12 yr. old Watkins XP2). Then gloves on, eyes open for black widows and attempting to remove the capacitor. Helpful video.

    Anytime you are handling a capacitor, it is a good idea, after disconnecting the power, to take a screwdriver with a plastic handle and short the contacts by touching them at the same time with it before touching it with your hands. This will remove any standing voltage from the capacitor.

      @@VIPPoolsandSpas No problem. I was more or less leaving the tip for someone that might be new to the task. It's a really simple trick that can save you from having shaky hands of fear. Sometimes those terminals can be stubborn enough to remove without adding trying to keep from getting shocked to the equation. 👍

    I have the humming when I try to turn the aux on in my tub...I also get a slight odor when I also turn it on, but it just hums...I do not get this metal melting type of odor(hard to describe the smell) when I don't use the aux. I think I need a new compacitor.

    • @VIPPoolsandSpas
      @VIPPoolsandSpas  Рік тому +1

      AUX is pump 2 I think. Whatever pump it is, sounds like it's seized or its the capacitor. Unplug the pump or turn the power off right away and test the capacitor. If you can turn the impellor pump shaft, its the capacitor. If you can't turn it, its the bearing.

    I have a hot springs with a wave master 7000 pump that keeps tripping the breaker. It has 2 capacitors though. One on top and at the rear. Which do I change or both. Very hard to get to without draining the tub and removing the pump.

      I would say the start capacitor in the back. But, not sure the pump you have.

      Filling my tub for the winter season and ran into the same problem w/ the same pump (Hot Springs Jetsetter). Guessing it's the capacitor (Power on, large click, breaker pops in 3-5 seconds). Thought shaft might be seized-up but it still spins. Capacitor not doing it's job. Sun went down..........tackling it again tomorrow. Will see if I can spin the shaft with a screwdriver as he did in the video.

      Needed to check the impeller first and then test the capacitor. If the impeller spins freely, then the pump is no good.

    l have a Rimini spa bad or hotub , that is about 8 years old. I am in Sweden, We noticed a while ago that it did not seem to have full power, when pushed on full power, the flow was weak, everywhere. We also said to ourselves, that we think that we had 2 power settings, you pushed it in and got like 50% bubbles and then pushed it in again for full bubbles. But we only seemed to have one setting now full and off only. I know the pump is 2 speed, says on it. So I took the pump out and took it apart, noticed that the impellor was half missing, all broken, So I thought great was impellor, ordered a new impellor and seals, just the same, pushed the jet button on, which again only full mode, hardly any flow. could not believe that this was not the problem.
    And then after testing it for a good few times, the jet button refused to go on to full bubbles, I am thinking that this is some safety cut-off switch inbuilt. I thought for a while that possibly the pump smelled like it was burning just a little. I have taken out all the jets, emptied the water, blasted a hose through all of them, thinking that if 50% of the impellor is disintegrated, then bits must be stuck somewhere. Some small bits have come out. very small though. I am wondering if I need to buy a new pump, Just hope it's not the motherboard or control panel. Because the pump has not 2 speeds working, or something is definitely not right. What's your opinion. Is there something else I need to check? I am cracking up, not finding the problem, Could it be the capacitor? I am hoping a new pump will solve the issue. Appreciate your opinion thanks.
