Hey Vin, having recently been reminded of the early game struggles of starting a new Rimworld colony, here's some tips to help streamline things a little: 1) Work priority is a big hurdle in the early game, especially when you only have few pawns, giving the wrong jobs priority can mean that important ones rarely get done. Remember that Work tab priority reads from left to right, performing jobs with higher numbers first, then goes through the list from left to right again to refresh for updated tasks. Depending on how many tasks need doing and how many pawns you have, pawns may spend so much time doing a few jobs set to higher priority (ex: farming, hauling, etc.) that they never get around to the lower priority ones. It's important to prioritize jobs in a sequence of operations based on each pawn's skills to ensure that jobs are getting done For example, if a pawn is good at Shooting and Cooking, then they should prioritize Hunting and then Cooking because Hunting is (usually) a quick job that provides them with the meat they need to cook with. Likewise, Butchering needs to happen before Cooking can happen, so be sure to mouse over each job to see what it does and set priority accordingly. The Complex Jobs mod offers finer control over vanilla jobs (which sometimes get bogged down with tasks, especially with mods), but it does mean there's more to manage overall, so just take your time and figure things out as you go. It can help to assign each pawn to just one or two major tasks to avoid getting too overwhelmed 2) Growing is the farming job, Plant Cut is for cutting trees and foliage, very important distinction. For farming, it's good to set up an enclosed, roofed farming area with Sunlamps and Heaters early on to ensure that you don't lose all of your crops when it drops below freezing. To properly manage the temperature for this enclosure, be sure to make a pair of doors in an "airlock" configuration (door, 1-3 block gap, another door) to prevent drastic temperature shifts. Alternatively, build it under the mountain (using planters/hydroponics or placing dirt if you have the soil mod), which will regulate temperature more evenly (at risk of bug spawns). It's worth noting that Sunlamps use a TON of electricity (2900W) while active though, so you'll need some decent Power generation and a large stockpile of batteries to literally keep the lights on 3) Taming animals is another option for a sustainable food source, though it does mean you'll have to keep them fed (which should be less of an issue if you've sorted out farming, as per the previous point). If you have Vanilla Plants Expanded then you can literally just plant grass in a Grow zone inside an animal pen, which is usually enough to sustain a few animals. Otherwise, just plant some Haygrass and keep it stockpiled in the animal pen 4) Grow Healroot as soon as possible. You can never have enough of it and it stays fresh for a long time even without any refrigeration, it's also used in higher quality medicine later on 5) General jobs are important, albeit with somewhat weird priorities. Firefight, Patient, and Basic are all safe to keep at #1, as they rarely prevent other jobs from being performed and have pretty large impacts. Likewise, Haul+, Haul, and Transport are good high-ish priorities (1-3) as they keep resources within short distance of workbenches and bring supplies to construction objects, but if you have too many things to haul (ex: random junk on the map, tons of crops, etc.) then pawns may spend too much time moving things around to perform their other, more important tasks. Generally, it's good to set less skilled pawns (combat-oriented, low stats, etc.) to Hauling jobs because they won't be doing much else anyways. Jobs like Mining and Plant Cut pair well with Construction jobs because they'll clear out rocks and plants/trees from designated building areas. Research is a trickier one to prioritize because it's a continuous job, meaning pawns won't do any job that are a lower priority than Research, so you kinda have to juggle its priority as needed until you have enough pawns to fully dedicate someone to the task 6) As your colony tasks start to become more manageable, remember to start making some new clothes and basic armor for your pawns. Every layer of clothing (skin, middle, outer, head, gloves, boots) helps pawns manage heat/cold (parkas are very good for winter) and adds a little bit of defense along the way. And, obviously, armor helps to both reduce injuries and keep pawns alive when trouble rolls around (or even when they're fighting each other) 7) This is already a long list, so I'll cap it here, but remember to just have fun. Only the sweatiest of Rimrims are out here foaming at the mouth for a hardcore commitment playthrough, but anyone who's watched you for a while knows that's not really your focus. The Vinesauce Rimworld experience isn't about losing all of your colonists to a fistfight with One Guy and trudging through the process of creating a whole new colony to show that you're a Real Gamer, it's about Hatsune Miku forcing Scoot to OD on smokeleaf and Chat vicariously living out their dream of knocking up a Twitch ToS-approved slimegirl

Then seeing the rice plants sit there unharvested as food slowly dwindled, them continue sitting there, then the blight, then the crops never get replanted, then blaming Randy and the lack of colonists. Truly painful.
That was a bit of a rough start, I think the main issue was trying to expand a bit too quick and then just not having to resources to upkeep all of it between having the slime out of commission and more than a few pawns just leeching resources without doing anything. The ideologion stuff in particular is a pretty tough to learn to play with, I had problems with it on my first go too. Kind of a shame the nutrient paste guy in chat got clowned on so hard because that thing really is one of the best ways to get through spots when you're low on food, it's kind of a pain to set up admittedly, especially if you didn't plan your base with its existence in mind in the first place but it really does make things a lot more manageable when you've got a large colony and a limited supply of food. The small mood debuff from eating it is small potatoes in comparison to being starved.
It's not a pain. You make a fridge, put a nutrient paste dispenser in it, then set up your power source somewhere near the fridge. Then, build your rec room near the fridge. Put colony rooms underneath the rec room, then make some workshops near the rec room, and wow, now you have a complete functioning colony. You could do this all in a single 25x25 block.
Can we all appreciate that SlimeChamp: - Was born in 2019, right at the end of the year by Rem Lezar - Made a comeback from an animation that got Vinny banned - Got impregnated by chat - Smoked weed while pregnant - Made Grey Leno jealous - Found her ex - Refused to elaborate
It pains me that Melpert didn't reload when the pawn he spent so much time trying to get healthy like not even 10 m after last reload. Welp, at least it makes for a good drama twist, not always has to be a perfect run.
I was looking, and apparently the composer for this game actually does solo music and has it on Bandcamp. I wonder if Vinny would be into it, as he does like this soundtrack
@@kie_stone Al Lindsey, I believe. It's funny because I was just snooping around the guys website to see what else he's done and he mentioned his solo stuff
@@IfItsNotFun yeah Al Lindsay has some good music. A shame they can’t just have the OST on Bandcamp as well but it’s cool to hear their original singles.
"Can I get rid of the Learning-Helper somehow?" ---> Malpert proceeds to not get rid of it ☠💀☠ Oh boy, I think it took 8 episodes season 1, around ~4 episodes season 2. I both admire and despair at this quality of Vinny - he will tackle any issue for 5-30 seconds tops, after that he will simply label it as "Difficulty: Impossible" and move on. At that point, I honestly believe he can even see it anymore. For example, he was able to find the option to disable hats within 10 seconds - had he not, he would have accepted his fate and hats would stay on forever. ❗ It's one of the bottom right icons ❗
Chat constantly throughout; "Digging into the cave makes a much more defensible base" You only have to risk immediately losing the playthrough to bugs, what's the big deal?
Shoutout to this comment section - most of the comments were quite wholesome in the sense that a lot of you are engaged with Vin's RimWorld content and are actively sharing advice to help him along. Really nice to see.
he could have been growing food that whole time before winter but he just screws with work priorities without realizing how crucial they are... (setting tailoring to 1 just to make a single parka???)
@@TrueLadyEvilChan Considering how Vinny didn't reload at all in season 1 and 2 despite the Scoot cancer, Speedy and *insert traumatic happenings in season 2 here*, I'm pretty sure he's only going to reload if the entire colony gets wiped early on
I think Vinny is trying to play too quickly. Should probably slow game time down a bit and address each problem as they come. Need to manage schedules and work priorities a bit better for more efficiency. I get that he's probably just trying to get a new pawn quickly, but a lot of small mistakes are being made that are adding up very quickly. Micro management isn't really the most fun thing to do on stream but at this early stage it's probably best to focus on that until the base is a bit more self-sufficient.
Everybody worries so much about bugs in this game, like damn, they aren't the worst thing in the world. Just keep your base clean, make sure all the rooms are floored, and plan your base to be defensible. (Separated rooms, long hallways with door checkpoints between sections. If there's an outbreak anywhere, the checkpoints give your pawns time to prepare, and the narrow hallways stop the bugs from being able to surround your pawns. Front-end any defense attempts with armored melee pawns, put ranged pawns close behind them. Turns infestations into a joke.)
Insect hives are one of the more manageable threats. They’re just really annoying because the best strategy to deal with them (lure them out into a corridor with traps and a firing squad at the end) usually results in them destroying everything in the room.
NEver auto hunt, Never bother with kibble its always a waste, and most importantly SCHEDUAL Rec time, 2hrs a day in a certain spot and everyone can go talk together and relax, little to no problems when you actually give them a break
okay so i havent played rimworld myself yet but could you explain why the first 2 things are bad? i could see why autohunt is bad but why is kibble a waste?
@@Sans-lm6sy most animals that eat kibble can also just eat one of the ingredients of kibble (it's made with 1 part protein and 1 part veg) and be just as satisfied by it. its just a waste of time to make it when you can just have your animals eat some of the ingredients that you're making your colonists meals from. even just feeding them your excess meals is more efficient
@@Sans-lm6sy kibble is decent for mass producing and feeding to your animals if you have a very wide variety of animals who may not all eat the same foods tho, since kibble is acceptable for animals with carnivorous, vegetarian, and omnivorous diets
@@hecticscone kibble also doesnt need to be refridgerated, as long as its roofed and indoors you can just have it sitting there forever as a reliable food source. i think thats the main advantage
Vinny, please remove the lights in your bedrooms ( not the hospital ). It wastes a little amount of steel and electricity, but colonists will not get a mood debuff because they'll just be asleep in their bedroom anyway.
Ah thanks for the reply! I probably missed it last stream! Hopefully it comes out decently quickly, I'd love to start a game of my own, but these mods look great!
vinny should give himself like 2 more pawns with mods and take a good 10min looking his job priority and should be good to go. since he's playing with idiology its kinda hard to get more pawns 😁
He doesn't even need that. He just needs to organize his work priorities. The original three are actually pretty strong as-is but he keeps futzing with their jobs and it's just a mess.
There are some games I wish Vinny would play with like a friends and acquaintances only chat. Way too many redditors frothing at the mouth as they screamcast him through a list of conflicting goals in a game 3/4s of them have never played.
Rimworld is complex. I had issues picking it up alongside Vin after two years and I have almost 600 hours. Just to clarify: he is playing like shit, bad Randy is like 3 raids in 40 hours, a blight is nothing if you know how to plant stuff
@@Lampoluke that's very true and your situation is very understandable. vinny has a chatroom of tens of thousands of people who can give him advice, yet he manages to make mistake after mistake (around halfway through this VOD) i love vin but i gotta say it how it is, and it is _frustrating_
@@hecticscone again, the game is complex so everyone has it's tactics, of course chat is giving 10 conflicting statements, but he did some universal fuckups, like not caring about plants or hunting, or even complaining about starving when you have dead bodies in the base. I still hope he continues because chat cucking the guy with vasectomy and fistfighting Gray Leno is the best story arc in Vinny's rimworld
@@Lampoluke i see what you mean and i get how he could still mess up. i think the part that frustrated me most was that at certain points he acted like he _definitely_ knew what he was doing when really he didn't. we all have those moments, but i don't think i've ever seen vinny do that before
1:45:07 I hate it so much when people say "losing is fun" "the failing is part of the fun". They say the same nonsense with Dwarf Fortress. It might be for you; but its not the case for everyone. Its not that if you repeat it enough times that it becomes true for everybody. Stop it. Eventually losing is fun; but slowly building up a base and just experimenting with it is fun too. It then suddenly getting wrecked too early is definately not my idea of "fun".
@@mihaimercenarul7467 like I said i have nothing to prove to anyone. I play for story and enjoyment only. If that means extreme easy mode or cheating.. I really don't care.
then why are you crying if others don't want to reset and love playing challening games? I remember years ago really wanting to play this back when Vinny first played it, but getting a PC wasn't possible and the UI seemed far too busy for a console port. Especially with one guy making it. Didn't seem like a game that could ever work with a controller, but they did it. Somehow RimWorld runs better on my crusty old PS4 than most new gen games, it's surprisingly smooth.
@@mihaimercenarul7467this is the type of game where performance can bottleneck in cpu/memory faster than you'd think. I remember trying to play dwarf fort on a low end laptop and it just entirely falling apart despite the simple presentation.

How are you gonna spend hours complaining about not having enough colonists and then instantly imprison your first new colonist the moment he wobbles out of the hospital bed?
Could have had 6 new guys (guy he got, 38 year old Neanderthal who bled out, engineer he refused, super doc and the two who took him away (they would have been angry at doc's arrest but could have also been arrested as there were only two of them) in the first 40 minutes. But...
his chat is constantly acting like a bunch of elitist redditors, saying he should just slog through all the worst luck and never enjoy himself because that's the "right" way to play the game, but rimworld is so much you really don't have to do that to enjoy yourself. chat just sucks, Vinny should really stop paying attention to people like that, because by doing what they want he is enabling and drawing in more of those types.
stop coping. Death and failure is part of the game. You can survive harsh moments with one guy, with no food or bad temperature on clutch moments. If they survive it;s very rewarding and feels good. If they die oh well it happens, that's the game, he can reload or start over.
@@mihaimercenarul7467yeah, it's really fun to see how your colony dies out and every possible action takes like days to complete with one person. Very fun. Very interesting. No, it is not.
I think part of the problem is that Vinny is clearly not having fun. I think he does need to ignore chat a bit more, but more because they keep giving him shitty 1guy advice that is making him run around like an ADHD squirrel being led by an ADHD toddler (chat) in a game about planning. All he really needs to do is slow down and figure out work priorities and stop listen to chat every time they nut themselves over a pawn with more than 4 in a skill with no passion.
@@kommandantwunder6785 Peaks and valleys. Games like this would be boring as shit if the present chance of failure was never there. The fact you can recover from catastrophe at all allows for an incredible depth of gameplay that most colony/town builders do not account for. Why would a fail state exist in this game if it wasn't designed to allow you to fail? Failure isn't necessarily fun but it's a necessary part of learning. If you think growth is boring good for you I guess, this game doesn't seem like your thing.
@@The1337guy1 I probably played rimworld more than you and every other man in this comments section did and never found it fun to begin from the start or wait until my only pawn left alive does one task for three days because he's not proficient enough.
Dang I want to like this series but it's frustrating to watch him make dozens of mistakes, not learn understand basic things like how work priorities work, get sidetracked making art instead of securing food production, killing off chickens for no reason, etc. And it would all be fine because he's learning the game, but he just blames the game and Randy constantly for all these problems. Like he's on the second easiest difficulty, it isn't the game's fault.
Besides me thinking he can be more fun and animated when bad things happen, i like the mistakes. Makes me think of how i would play it if i were in his shoes. And of course, i watched his Season 1 and Season 2 vids religiously at the time they came out, so i can instantly recognize everything he's doing wrong and shit, but Vinny plays so many games throughout the year you can't blame him for not being perfect or remembering all of what to do
so like can i get vinny to play dwarf fortress if i add blade runner/star trek vibes (i do not blame him for preferring rimworld to dwarf fortress for blade runner/star trek vibes. how could i)
Randy isnt the problem in this case though. Its Vinny being overwhelmed because he hasnt played the game in a couple of years, which is understandable + 12k Chatmembers telling him different things to do, most of their suggestions being completely insane. I saw more people in chat worrying about him digging into certain mountain tiles because insects MIGHT spawn there someday instead of helping him getting his food production going. Or then he finds Jade and people instantly get him sidetracked with making statues, even though he has no art guy and still no food to last the winter. It would have probably helped to have one of his friends/mods sit silently in a discord call for the first couple parts, so he can instantly ask them where to find icons or menus or how to get things started, instead of playing Chat Russian Roulette
I still can't believe that the response to the chat NPC getting another NPC pregnant was "we did it boys", as if they just threw a ball good in sports or defeated a boss in a toxically masculine game, and not, uh I don't know, condemned a new NPC lifeform to living an entire life in this videogame chance-based hell (irl isn't different in that aspect). They sure show they're an incel community. I worry for anyone that finds someone from this community outside of it, in many different ways. Oh look! Of course the comment talking about the child has a PNG of the most genocidal and violent and globally accepted animal on Earth! Just when you think it's hellish, it gets worse. Not that people that like violence would understand it's habit and history of genociding, or would care about who it would eliminate, so I'm not gonna bother explaining it. To be fair, they would care about who it would eliminate, people that get hurt by violence obviously, they tend to be very likeable people, they just don't care about them being hurt by it. Yes, that's definitionally abusive. I think about the "it's a video game I would behave different irl" cope, which isn't entirely true to begin with because if your perception was deformed to the shape of a videogame in any way shape or form, you would not behave different. That is a part of your response to the situation. I'm starting to think videogames are a great way of detecting hidden psychological dangers, you know, if you avoid the narcissistic cope, and the black and white thinking of "no it is completely unrelated to irl behavior and no it is completely identical to irl behavior".

You could do this all in a single 25x25 block.
hungover watching rimworld with my cat on my lap, heard loud metal pipe and laughed so hard my cat fled
Can we all appreciate that SlimeChamp:
- Was born in 2019, right at the end of the year by Rem Lezar
- Made a comeback from an animation that got Vinny banned
- Got impregnated by chat
- Smoked weed while pregnant
- Made Grey Leno jealous
- Found her ex
- Refused to elaborate
I hope Vinny will allow chat to have many children with slime again (still hope he creates either an army of cloned chats or children of chats)
Seeing this comment now is so funny
Once again, I am re-addicted to Rimworld, I have relapsed
rimming just feels too good
It pains me that Melpert didn't reload when the pawn he spent so much time trying to get healthy like not even 10 m after last reload. Welp, at least it makes for a good drama twist, not always has to be a perfect run.
so much pain could've been avoided in vinny took a few minutes to set up the work priorities efficiently
This Rimworld went from 100 to 0 in a heartbeat
I was looking, and apparently the composer for this game actually does solo music and has it on Bandcamp. I wonder if Vinny would be into it, as he does like this soundtrack
You have their handle they go by on there?
@@kie_stone Al Lindsey, I believe.
It's funny because I was just snooping around the guys website to see what else he's done and he mentioned his solo stuff
(and honestly, the first song on his page sounds like something Vinny would've played on a BRB at some point, i'm sure he might dig it)
@@IfItsNotFun yeah Al Lindsay has some good music. A shame they can’t just have the OST on Bandcamp as well but it’s cool to hear their original singles.
I wouldnt mind seeing Vinny try to compose something for a game himself. I mean it seems like a pretty big overlap of interests
When he sent the guy to harvest who never had and threw 80 percent.of his crop away i wept
"Can I get rid of the Learning-Helper somehow?" ---> Malpert proceeds to not get rid of it ☠💀☠
Oh boy, I think it took 8 episodes season 1, around ~4 episodes season 2.
No one mentions adjusting the schedule so they focus on work for 3/4 of the day vs doing anything : D
Chat constantly throughout; "Digging into the cave makes a much more defensible base"
You only have to risk immediately losing the playthrough to bugs, what's the big deal?
That thumbnail sure gets me excited for some classic Rimworld.
Glad chat let us know they were cool with the reload.

Season 3 is turning into just Rimworld Hospital so far
Here's to hoping that consequences remain, outside of something super terrible.
I love heartbreak and drama.
doesn't really make for fun gameplay though. who cares what you like if he doesn't enjoy playing the game that way.
@@logandarnell8946 Uhhh, huh?
Yeah. I agree. That's why I said "outside of something super terrible".
I'm a professional reloader myself.
Micro management isn't really the most fun thing to do on stream but at this early stage it's probably best to focus on that until the base is a bit more self-sufficient.
blah blah blah
Alert? It's x3 speed time!
The fucking metal pipe gets me every time
ADDICTED
The run will improve with more colonists on the way
This is like crack without the effort on my part.
Happy Birthday Giggles 🥳
vinny didn't learn from last season how bad of an idea it is to build directly into the mountain like that
I'm pretty sure he has done it every time he's played rimworld
I always hollow out a mountain if I can, it's when areas with mountain rooftops are left in the dark for too long is when the bugs decide to move in.
Insect hives are one of the more manageable threats. They’re just really annoying because the best strategy to deal with them (lure them out into a corridor with traps and a firing squad at the end) usually results in them destroying everything in the room.
He directly adresses it as a concern several times and chat reassures him it's fine every time. He wouldn't have done it if chat didn't insist on it.
This run was not kind to vinny, bright side is congrats to chat and slime for their new born abomination.

@@hecticscone ahh that makes sense ill keep that in mind when i get the game
@@Sans-lm6sy kibble is decent for mass producing and feeding to your animals if you have a very wide variety of animals who may not all eat the same foods tho, since kibble is acceptable for animals with carnivorous, vegetarian, and omnivorous diets

Vinny, please remove the lights in your bedrooms ( not the hospital ). It wastes a little amount of steel and electricity, but colonists will not get a mood debuff because they'll just be asleep in their bedroom anyway.

'plap' 'plap' 'plap' 'plap' 'plap' 'plap' 'plap' 'plap' 'plap'

vinny should give himself like 2 more pawns with mods and take a good 10min looking his job priority and should be good to go.
since he's playing with idiology its kinda hard to get more pawns 😁
He doesn't even need that. He just needs to organize his work priorities. The original three are actually pretty strong as-is but he keeps futzing with their jobs and it's just a mess.
Great rim session so far. Mod list?
I think he said he wanted to keep it a secret until later because of some "surprises" with that pipe drop being one of them.
vin would you be comfortable sharing your mod list in the future?

There are some games I wish Vinny would play with like a friends and acquaintances only chat.
Way too many redditors frothing at the mouth as they screamcast him through a list of conflicting goals in a game 3/4s of them have never played.
Do anyone know of a place where I can look at all of venny's fan art?

vinny playing with the confidence of someone who has thousands of hours in this game when he hasnt played it in like a year is sending me
Rimworld is complex.

I remember years ago really wanting to play this back when Vinny first played it, but getting a PC wasn't possible and the UI seemed far too busy for a console port. Especially with one guy making it.
Didn't seem like a game that could ever work with a controller, but they did it. Somehow RimWorld runs better on my crusty old PS4 than most new gen games, it's surprisingly smooth.
ummm, this is a very small game that can run on a toaster. I don't think it makes sense to compare it to other new gen games performance wise.

Why does Vinny, who is bad at games, want to play such a hard game?
How are you gonna spend hours complaining about not having enough colonists and then instantly imprison your first new colonist the moment he wobbles out of the hospital bed?
Could have had 6 new guys (guy he got, 38 year old Neanderthal who bled out, engineer he refused, super doc and the two who took him away (they would have been angry at doc's arrest but could have also been arrested as there were only two of them) in the first 40 minutes. But...
And he lost him too xD
his chat is constantly acting like a bunch of elitist redditors, saying he should just slog through all the worst luck and never enjoy himself because that's the "right" way to play the game, but rimworld is so much you really don't have to do that to enjoy yourself. chat just sucks, Vinny should really stop paying attention to people like that, because by doing what they want he is enabling and drawing in more of those types.
stop coping.
And of course, i watched his Season 1 and Season 2 vids religiously at the time they came out, so i can instantly recognize everything he's doing wrong and shit, but Vinny plays so many games throughout the year you can't blame him for not being perfect or remembering all of what to do
so like can i get vinny to play dwarf fortress if i add blade runner/star trek vibes (i do not blame him for preferring rimworld to dwarf fortress for blade runner/star trek vibes. how could i)
Randy is objectively the worst storyteller for exactly this reason.
@@gamingcooperationsWhat you fail to realize is that Randy was the chat members the whole time.
