- In this long awaited video i go over my turbo setup and what it took for me turbo my 2002 Mazda Protege5! This was one of the biggest car projects that i have done. It completely changed the car and I have loved every second of it after the install. I hope I give some info and help for someone who is also looking to turbocharge their 2.0L Manual Protege!

Heartbreaking this is the last vid of it, hope to see you back in a Mazda again
Yeah, if I do get an other Mazda hopefully it’s a Miata or an RX7!
I've owned 4 Mazdaspeeds now, but doing this has always been my dream. Super clean protege 5 too, hard to find them not rotting in an old guys back yard
That’s awesome, I love the speeds. This was definitely a fun build!
@@NoahGaebel been really considering selling my ms6 and grabbing one of these to pair with my ms3, any idea what you were able to make for power with this setup?
It’s a standard MSP swap so very close to that stock power which was like 170hp
@@NoahGaebelhow much hp now
@@Bleseddd1probably close to 170… lmao he literally answered it😂.
I literally like this dudes video before I've watched it, I already know its gonna be good
Dude! Noah! $1000 turbo kit is a REALLY GOOD DEAL DUDE! Well done! 👏👏👏
nice dude! just bought a mazda protoge5 manual with only 50k miles on it🤙🏽 i wanna get this thing boosted asap..found this video to be very helpful, very clean build bro
50k miles, that’s awesome! Glad I could help out!
Wanna trade mine only has 274k on it
holy shit... a pretty effin' comprehensive list and thought on the whole process. well done, good looking car
Good on you, mate! Keep that wrench turning!
Impressively clean install and car overall! And nicely shot & edited vid! Just bought a MS Protege in decent shape & with a few suspension/performance mods otherwise it's stock. No accidents and decent miles and adult owned. Bought it for Kicks and Giggles as a Winter project. Hopefully it'll be less expensive and simpler than doing a Miata or RX7. IMHO personally I'd have gone with a bigger intercooler & turbo but you did this on an amazingly low budget and the glamour shots make your car look clean enough to eat off! Great work! Hope you're still enjoying it. Brave man to turbo it at 200k+ miles however those Mazda/Ford engines were almost indestructible if you took any semblance of care/maintenance
Reminds me of my swapped P5... good times :)
That thing had rusted back into the earth by 2008 though impressive that yours is still in one piece.
I decided I want to turbo my normal protege, so this video helped me get an understanding of what ill need! Not the same model of course but still helpful, a fellow washingtonian in a protege is always nice to see as well
You’re welcome, this video will apply to any 2.0L manual protege. Hatch or sedan for the early 2000s. I’m glad I could help steer you in the right direction and hopefully you can turbo it!
@@NoahGaebel ahh I have an automatic... would that ruin my chances?
Anything is possible, it would just take more time, energy, and money to turbo an automatic. I’m gonna assume the hardest part would be tuning it.
@@NoahGaebel Hmm alright, thank you!
Nicely done. I'm actually shocked at how cheap you were able to turbo it for. Out of curiosity, how many miles does your motor have? If it's higher mileage, are you worried about longevity?
These were the prices when I got the turbo stuff which was about 3 years ago. The engine had around 175k miles and now has 207k miles. The car has been driven very hard and out of everything that I have installed this has been my most reliable modification. With the only issue is the oil return bung on the pan is seeping.
Seen this on protege5 Facebook group gotta watch them all now
Thanks ! I’ve wanted to turbo my protege for a while but didn’t know where to start !
That’s awesome, if I can do it i’m sure you can too!
Would it matter if mine was automatic transmission?
Yes, the tuning aspect of it would be entirely different. But it can be done, just not as easy as a manual.
I have a clean yellow protege5 that I inherited from my Dad. Been thinking about this upgrade
Injen CAI and Magnaflow exhaust system.
Its very much worth it if you can find a decent quality Mazdaspeed turbo kit. You got some good mods on it!
Nice Nardi steering wheel!
Thanks!
I just have a regular ole 02 protege5 as my daily and I gotta say. The bitch is a blast to drive on a curvy road. Reminds me of my RX-8 that I’m waiting to fix. 🤣
This was my first car so I had no reference but I’ve come realize why I was so so drawn to it. It’s so fun to drive and is incredibly nimble!
This is sick 🔥
I went with a forge wastegate it works awesome :)
It’s been something that I wanted to upgrade as well since I’ve the stock one fails over time
Nice fuckin car bro. Im hours away from getting my second protege5 and this one i will build 💪
Awesome guide man!
The cx racing fmic is what I have it's awesome:) n I'm also on a stock ecu with a piggyback
Which piggy back if you don’t mind me asking?
SplitSecond FTC1 Fuel/Timing Calibrator
Could you happen to do a video covering the vacuum system? That's the only thing I have that is causing me problems..
Sorry to say I probably wouldn’t do a video on it but I would be glad to help over the comments, Facebook, or something along those lines. It’s pretty straightforward.
Sheeeesh😍
It's so difficult to get parts here in South Africa 😢
Thanks. I’m sorry to hear that😭
@@NoahGaebel you're welcome dude💯
thank you brotha worty :D
Brooo thank you!! Do you think the junk yard would have these parts for my 2006 mazda 5 GS, or what website could I find parts?? I have 55,250KM on it. Never went over 100
I wanna (turbo it) and tune
what taillights are you using? i think this style looks more like 2003 mazdaspeed protege tails, i like them more than the oe protege tail lights. clean build 👍🏼
They are the 323 taillights, I believe they are the standard taillights outside of the US for the wagons
@@NoahGaebel you know what year they came off of?
@cooperwhiten2425 not sure exactly but a 1999 323F has them
@@NoahGaebel appreciate it man thank you!
Hey nice Protege5! Where did you find the window visors and are you happy with them and the installation??
I bought these ones, they are okay. They don’t line ups very well but stuck on okay and did their job.

@@NoahGaebel thanks!
I see you can't escape the check engine light either! I need a new exhaust lol
Yup the car has had it since I got, had multiple at first and actually got rid of all of them but a EVAP leak one returned. But before I got rid of the car it had some sort of power steering sensor code🤷♂️
I dont even know where to start looking for parts for my P5.. I got a mazdaspeed build I'm doing for it so any info helps!
The Facebook groups will help out a lot. They have parts group and general groups and the community loves to help out. Speed Circuit has a few new parts, AWR, and Hydra also do!
hey just wondering, where did you get the gaskets for the turbo? i have a 03 mazdaspeed protege and having issues finding them. everything you hsve on the parts that you used to replace everything would be greatly appreciated!! also any info on what internals can be used for the turbo would help also. Thank you!!!
Awesome Video!!
The exhaust manifold gasket is the same for the NA cars so just the Protege5 one will work. The other one is just a T2 turbo gasket. Not sure what you mean by internals but the block, rods, and head are identical from the MSP and the P5
I’m in love with this car ever since I seen one for a great price and I would like this to be my first car. Do you think it is a great daily when not modified or slightly modified?
This was my first car and I have loved it every step of the way. It was fun when i got it stock and it’s been fun when it’s heavily modified. It’s easy to work on and fun to drive. Very practical and looks good. Definitely check one out!
Yes get one
Okay so I am doing the same exact thing but with a 02 Mazda protege ES 2.0L when u got a speed ecu wha all did u change and did u not have to get the car tuned? I been doing so much research and your video has help me so much an led me all in the right way and have watch this video like 9 different times and that is the only question I have!
I bought a mazdaspeed protege ECU and just replaced the previous ECU in the car. No tuning or anything. Literally takes like 20 minutes to change the ecu. It’s under the front passenger foot/carpet area. Just has to be a 2.0L manual protege.
Okay sounds good thank you!
The factory mazdaspeed ECU is plug and play. Stand alone is the most controllable.
Piggybacks can work well if set up correctly. Tune closed loop so there is 0 net fuel trim (short term + long term). Tune open loop based on air fuel ratio. The trick with these cars is to have the piggyback disconnect or drive the primary 02 to 1V once the car makes boost. 0.5 - 1 lb is a good set point. That will give you a consistent switch over to open loop. The tuning will be easier and the car will run better.
Subbed, any chance you'd have a parts list? There are some checklists on forums but was wondering regardless.
I don’t have a full parts list but I do have some pictures of all the parts. DM me on Instagram or Facebook and I’ll send them over and try to help out some more!
Where did you find Mazdaspeed parts? I can't find any anywhere 🙁
I purchased almost all of my mazdaspeed parts second hand from facebook groups
Ay bro I have a protege 5 to I was wondering were u order your parts from
I got most of my parts from the Facebook protege parts groups. Most of the parts on the car are used
Where’d you get those window stick on things? I can’t seem to find the anywhere!
So the stock Mazdaspeed Protege made 170bhp, with the mods yours has what do you think it’s making? Thanks, and keep it up.
Yeah, it’s hard to tell since it’s never been on a dyno but I would think new intake, intercooler, and exhaust would help a little bit but it’s also an old car so time and wear might bring it down a little.
Don't push too hard on them. The rod bolts are a weak point, ask me how I know 😆. Best to keep it about 205whp max. The MazdaSpeed diff is too, the open diff in the other Proteges should be fine. Also, if you upgrade rods and pistons, the transaxle is the near week link. Rumored to fail around 300whp.
You need to build the bottom end. The rods are known to fail even on the N/A engine
That was in the plan, but I never got around to it :(
Was the fitting for the oil feed at the oil pressure sensor something that came with your MSP stuff or is that something you sourced?
That came with the MSP stuff. The banjo bolt for the coolant was sourced. The original banjo had a nipple for the oil coolant. Not really worth the hassle from my experience
The coolant return hose can be purchased from Mazda. The updated version has a blue stripe on it.
The block to oil pressure switch is bpst. It's a bit difficult to find the correct adapter. Some people just use an NPT fitting with thread seal... not sure how well that will work long term.
How much was the total cost ?
what are your wheel specs and tire size???
They were a 17x8+35 and 215/40/17
Did you upgrade your clutch or stay stock?
I replaced the clutch with an oem equivalent one.
Hey I was looking at oil catch can I don't know if you have one but put one in mines just for the blowby
Yeah definitely a good idea. I had a tiny bit of oil in the intake when i last took it off.
Yo man I have a protege 5 to and was wondering if you know what website Sells camber kits for our cars
I got mine off of Amazon. They worked great no issues. But the part of the strut that connects to the knuckle needs to be oval and not a circle. It’s the two large bolts that one of these will replace.

Hello Connect turbo oem mazda speed protege to my mazda protege 5
It is spewing smoke what could be the problem I need your recommendations
I wish I could help but I need more information, but I am also not a technician or anything. Just some guy who puts some parts on cars for UA-cam videos. Message me on instagram and I’ll help in any way I can
Is it black smoke? Did the fuel pressure regulator get unplugged my mistake?
Bad turbo with and oil or coolant leak?
@@akivapilot yo I’m not the op but mine is having a similar issue, definitely oil smoke as you can smell it but I have a rebuilt turbo, new pcv, restrictor on feed line and blows mainly after letting off acceleration. Thoughts?
@@justalonelyflowerintherain4603 are you still on the stock GT2554R turbo? Do you have the correct restrictor for a ball bearing turbo?
@@akivapilot yeah stock turbo, should be the correct restrictor, fits the feed line and inlet and the hole is pretty small on the inlet side but still gives a decent supply, afaik it’s the AN4 to 1mm
so I have an ‘03 protege5 hatch, just the yellow (not speed) hatch. Would my process be similar?
Yeah exactly the same as long as it’s manual. Automatic requires more work.
Hey man where did you get the lip for the front bumper?
It’s a 2007 Subaru STI s204 Polyurethane Replica Lip from Amazon, with some mild trimming.

@@NoahGaebel god bless you man building the preface model which is the older model to this 🙌🏽
I’m looking to do some upgrades on my Mazda Protege5. It’s a 2003 manual. I was thinking about redoing the lights to start off then work towards exhaust and eventually turbo charging. Any tips for the electronics?
Oem is always best. I love my headlights how they look but were very finicky. The best headlights in my opinion were the oem euro headlights. And never get cheap led bulbs, They will always start flickering. Exhaust, Coilovers, intake, and shifter parts were my most fun and overall did the biggest difference besides turbo. Good luck on the journey, it will be fun!
If you are not going to turbo your car the 4-2-1 header from ebay for the Probe/MX-6/626 is a great addition to these cars. Helps the midrange and top end. Sounds good and is cheap too. It requires a few modifications on a Protege.
Need to dent one primary to clear the thermostat hosing. Clearance a rib on the transmission slightly. A gas line hose for a water heater works perfect for the EGR. Trim the primary 02 sensor bung a but for clearance. Need to cap/relocate the secondary 02 sensor. You will have to put a cat in the midpipe too.
Where would one be able to find a whole motor for one of these?
Could call local scrapyards or some kind engine builder
2nd gen Ford Probe, 626, MX-3, MX-6, Protege. Need to swap cam gear (possibly crank pulley) on some of them.
what sort of power can you expect to reach with the stock downpipe?
There’s not a whole lot of information but anyone over 200hp is using the pope downpipe.
@@NoahGaebel I'm wondering if I should cheap out and go for the stock downpipe over the 3 inch. I'm in Australia and freight is a killer! Not to mention conversion rates... Not after huge power though as it will be an NA+T setup
The stock one is very easy to find and is inexpensive and if you plan on actually building power with these engines you have a lot more to do and get other than the downpipe so it’s not the worse idea
@@NoahGaebel most likely will end up doing that then. Was going to go flex fuel but not really too much point. Callaway downpipe will be the way to go
I made somewhere in the 220s to the wheels with the stock downpipe. Your stock rod bolts will fail before the down pipe is a limiting factor.
On the return did u tap the oil pan or is it oem?
He tapped the oil pan
Amigo necesito de tu ayuda
You swap the whole engine or just parts?
Just the parts. Still the protege5 engine, which is nearly identical to the Mazdaspeed protege parts besides the turbo parts
@@NoahGaebel oh ok did you do like the pistons and cams too ?
Nope all stock, been running for 207,000 miles and still going
Dyno?
I unfortunately, never put the car on the dyno.
@@NoahGaebel I would assume significant gains.
@aspiceronni4462 it definitely gave it more power, but it’s essentially the mazdaspeed protege setup. So realistically it probably made anywhere from 160-180hp
Motor pr5 is stock??
Yup, motor is the same one that came in the protege 5!
you forged the engine. how many psi
It is not forged. Only 7.5 psi
@@NoahGaebel thanks bro
Please tell me what tuner you are using? I have a turbo set up on my mp5 and I need to tune it badly
No tuner, just using the stock MSP ECU.
@@NoahGaebel no problems with emissions reading as a different car?
Emissions actually went away locally for me so I didn’t have to do them. But I didn’t have any issues connecting scanners to it
I think the Proteges are old enough that they don't report the VIN or year over OBD. An MSP ECU/reflash could work if you have a stock MSP swap. If it is further modified you would need a piggy back.
