The unification of the German Confederation into the German Empire was one of the most consequential events of the 1800s, creating a new leading continental power in Europe which easily surpassed the previous lead power of France, and laid the foundations for both World Wars; but what if that changed, and Germany, because of Otto Von Bismarck's death, never unified?

So this is Britain‘s wet dream. Europe going through Battle royal until the end of time while the sun never sets on their empire
Yes, Yes it is
Honestly pretty good for France too, since it was th fall of the British Colonial Empire that kickstarted the fall of the French Colonial Empire.
@@Derkosson Plus, the fact that Austria and Prussia *never* seek revenge against France to the point of trying to conquer it is a good plus too.

What if the social revolutionaries took power in 1917 after the Russian Constituent Assembly election?
there was no way they could the bolsheviks would never accept anyone who wasn't one of them and they had most of the guns in the revolution
The Social revolutionaries would have to accept an end to the war, and then they might succeed.
They did. The Bolsheviks were Social Revolutionaries as a faction of the Russian Social Democratic Party. They simply advanced the ideas of Socialism, through Lenin's theories which became known as Marxism-Leninism. To them, social democracy, was a phase towards, Socialism and Socialism thus a phase towards Communism. Despite us today, using the terms interchangeably.
Lenin dies in exile.
Most likely Russia will become authoritarian democracy which would not be best but still far better than extremists like Bolsheviks
Bismarck wasn't a German Nationalist. Unifying Germany had one purpose, strengthening Prussia.
Are you calling him a Prussian nationalist?
@@erikthomsen4768 No a nationalist of Basedness

Video Sugestion: What If Japan annexed Korea in the 16th Century as they tried in real life?
And about the video, without the German Unification a lot of countries like France, Russia and Austria would probally still be monarchies or at least would have been longer.
Italy too, without German support in WW1 Italy would have better success in Tirol and be awarded their rightful spoils, preventing the fascist rise and the March on Rome, but it's also possible that without German aggression towards Austria Italy may have never unified.
@@torieldreemurr541 Italy was already unified
France has revolutions every wednesday. They couldn't keep a monarchy if they tried.
@@MrTohawk Well with how their kings acted, can you blame them for always revolting.
@@Nostripe361 no. how could anyone blame the french for being revolting
I have a great idea and i saw nobody ever talking g about this one:
The Ruhr-Crisis in the early 1920's lead to a lot of tension between the Weimar Republic on one side, Belgium and France on the other. The UK and USA pushed France and Belgium to pull out of the Ruhr Region.
So what if the French and Belgians didn't pull out and The Weimar Republic, backed up by the Brits and Americans, send in the military to kick them out.
What army? Weimar's army didn't had any aviation, no tanks, few artillery, was understrenght (only 100.000 men strong) and WWI had ended any hope of someone helping Germany
@@alessiodecarolis Germany would have MILLIONS of people that they could quickly mobilise. The USA and UK would probably also allow Germany to ignore the Versailles Treaty, Belgium and France broke it aswell, so it would be just fair. The French and Belgian troops could hardly stop the british and americans from supplying the germans with weapons. Either they would have to kick out the british and american forces in Germany - would would be like a declaration of war on both, or naval blockade Germany - which the British would not allow to happen. Add to this the militias and guerilla fighters that would also attack the french forces. LET'S TAKE IT A STEP FURTHER JUST TO BE SURE - the ruhr crisis reached it's peak in 1924 - when Mussolini was already in power, so maybe Italy would join the war on side of Germany. The Soviets might send aid to communist groups and if Poland would allie with France and Belgium it would not only loose britains support in future, it would surely be attacked by the Soviets. YES the numbers would be clearly in the favor of France and Belgium - but they still would loose - especially when the british force Belgium to repell their troops. France might be attacked by Italy, the Soviets might use it to start an uprising in France.
I think calling Napoleon III's reign of failure is not really accurate. he built a prosperous colonial Empire for France, only really failing and trying to acquire Mexico. his own elected government, because it was a constitutional monarchy, were the main driving force behind trying to fight Prussia.
More than failure there was a lot of social turmoil, an economical crisis, he needed an international success to consolidate his power with national public opinion, after all France had one of the biggest (and, teorically) expert Army in Europe
@@alessiodecarolis not teorically, France beats Russia during Crimean war (with English, Ottoman and Sardinian support) and Austria during Italian war (with Sardinian support), conquered Algeria, protected Roma against Italian nationalists, protected Christian during Syria's campaing... Prussia was a bigger concern problem because France was isolated, and so divided. But they looked like the two best armies of Europe.
French Army had good innovations too, maybe behind in tactics, with a headquarter unable to reform from the Napoleonic moment.
This liberal period was the biggest problem during nineteen century for France.
Indeed France gets so rich during this liberal period, but inequalities were more noticeable (so there were lot of social turmoil as you say). For exemple France was able to repay its war debt imposed by Prussia quicker than predicted.
Liberal governement meant no censorship (it was the press that pushed Napoleon III to declare war and warned the Germans of all French troop movements), more contraception, rural exodus, parity for inheritance between all children... as it impacted quicker her demography in comparison to Germany, England, Ireland, Russia or Italy.
Napoleon never choose which one he would defend or promote between the catholics, the italian carbonaro (italians nationalists, unificators). But he led France in these (mostly his personal interest) conflicts, against France's strategic interest. France had no strategic reason to help italian irredentists against the pope or Austria, or to intervene in Mexico to put an Austrian ruler.
About international relationships, only thing napoleon III did well, was licking british asses.
France industrialized quite a lot during his reign too
@@tot0m Exactly, I said teorically because for experience and strenght, at least on paper the French seemed stronger than Prussia, they'd a lot of veterans of various wars in their officers' and NCO corps
@@alessiodecarolis theoretically btw, is the spelling.

Now do a scenario where Großdeutschland became the reality i.e. Austria was incorporated in the second German Reich
OR
What if France won the Algerian war of independence?
France won the Algerian war of Independance, militarily speaking.
Politically, the French themselves chose to give independance to Algeria, by referendum, because there was not point in maintaining colonies in the 1960s.
Giving independance to Algeria was favour of France and de Gaulle, and a favour to France too in many ways
@@skiteufr why

The Großdeutschland scenario would be interesting
@@Swerzy- And because Algeria was a big economic burden...
Prussia was ethnically less devided, Austria would still be the same multiethnic mess. Germany Unification could and maybe would still happen, with Prussia still being the dominant power. Prussia might loose most of Posen and parts of the provinces of Westprussia and Eastprussia, but besides that mostly stay in tact. Austria on the other hand would sooner or later still face ethnic tensions and probably brake apart. I could see that atleast the majority protestant Lower Silesia rejoins Prussia.
The Germans in Denmark would probably start revolting sooner or later again so, if it wouldn't be for Prussia and Austria, probably the German Confederation would step in and form Schleswig-Holstein nonetheless
My issue is that this is right around the start of the nationalist movement. I really don't see Denmark holding onto these territories without massive losses of men and capital in putting down rebellions.
I doubt you can simply remove Bismarck from existence and make Germany never unify. The Germans wanted to be one nation, they were going to try to unify once again if they needed to.
Ironically, what started German natiobalism was Napoleon.
By not simply trying to rule over the HRE but by actively interfering in its internal order to a very strong degree, his wars kickstart the national revolutions all over Europe by not only giving them a uniting enemy but also a lasting justification, to be able to protect themselved from the nationally unified great powers.
Even further back, its the thirty years war, which scars the HRE, making it very opposed to outsiders messing in her affairs.

Josh: "What if Germany unified?"
also an alternate history with more than an hour of research put in to it 👏
Atta JOSH!!!
Ironically, this German Confederation is about the same size as the Federal Republic of Germany, trading Alsace-Lorraine for Brandenburg.
the more i learnt about Bismarck the more I wanted a House of Cards style show based on his life.
When you beat up your brother because you want his "icecream" too badly, but suddently your sister and other brother intervene.
The idea that Germany was not united is a misnomer used to slander German history, the German Nation was founded at the same time as France, in 843 AD. Yes by the end of the first realm it was weak and divided, but so was France at the beginning while early Germany was a great power. Over time these flipped, and with the instigation of Prussia flipped back again. Italy on the other hand the one that may have never united…
Can you please tell me what you are smoking? If it makes that believable to you I very badly need it
@@datdar6583 it’s true look up France during the 11th century and look how disunited the kingdom was, Germany/Holy Roman Empire meanwhile was a much stronger centrally controlled realm at the time. Over the following centuries these positions shifted greatly with France becoming absolutist, and even after the revolution very centralized, while Germany became quite loosely united after civil war, religious conflict, and the rise of a rival German kingdom to the Empire’s power, the old Imperial crusader colony of Prussia.
@@TheLocalLt That was not what the discussion is about tho... We are talking about political unity/entities. And the Kingdom of France was one political entity all french people associated themselves with, no matter the infighting.
The HRE was not like that. Nobody treated it like a single entity.
@@datdar6583 yes Germany was a single entity, because the base of the Holy Roman Empire was the Kingdom of the Germans, whose “stem” duchies formed one kingdom of which they elected a king, which was a German specifically (and not a Carolingian) from the crowning of Henry the Fowler as first King of the Germans (as opposed to the Eastern Franks). At this point Germany was becoming far more centralized than France, as contrary to your statement places like Brittany, Normandy, Aquitaine, and Burgundy all bucked royal authority despite, like the German princes in later centuries paying lip service to the king. Back in now-unified Germany, Henry’s son Otto the Great engaged in expansionism and Germany took over Italy and Burgundy, being transformed into the Roman imperium. Go look at the history, the swap between the two powers occurred over the course of several hundred years…
@@TheLocalLt I am aware of the history. Otto was facing internal rebellions the entire time of his reign and his Empire was never a unified one.
Do videos on if Italy, Spain, the UK, and Japan never united
Word it better. Sounds like there was ever a union BETWEEN these countries.
There actually are (catholic) places in Germany which remember the French rule rather fondly, preferring it to the Prussian protestants.
I liked this more upbeat video
I think that Germany would eventually have united as they would not have accepted being weak buffer states between powerful enemies.

Bavaria rises to crush France in the Franco-Bavarian War. They used the power of Polka and Beer to win the war single handed. Bavaria Unifies Germany Under Kaiser Ludwig II

Video concept: what if the Italian wars (1494 - 1556) never happened?
(prompts, what if the Italian League kept going or the Sforza dynasty never came to power in Milan or Gian Galeazzo Visconti didn't die in 1351)
great photos of Bismarck and Kaiser Willheim
Quick note: Prussia did NOT acquire Silesia in the 7 years war/2nd Silesian war! That happened, as you might have guessed now, in the 1st Silesian war. It had been part of the Austrian succession crisis.
Great job!
What’s that quick rap in the beginning
Not sure the German desire for a nation state would simply fade away because they were left with a manufactured neo German confederation...without Austria and Prussia no less. I can see the possibility of a united Austria and Prussia in response to French annexations as much as I can see spiraling German disunity. Either way, it is an interesting scenario to ponder.
A small correction: Austria lost Silesia in the War of the Austrian Succession. In this context, the Seven Years' War was only an unsuccessful attempt to retake it. But a great video nonetheless.

Without WW I german would be still the 2nd most spoken language in the US, right after spanish.
If Napoleon invades the rhineland the german confederation proably starts unification right there.
1 militairy command structure.
Suggestion
What if the polish November uprising succeeded
So in the actual timeline, Austria accepted to relinquish Venice for Italian neutrality so it would end up giving it to them anyway, & French wanted not the whole Rhineland but the Luxemburg & Palatinate & free hands in Belgium, so it would most likely be négociateur before involvement between allies & not cause bitterness
A world war would still happen of some sort Germany or not. With no Germany it is likely the UK keeps its rivalry with France going and butting heads with Russia in central Asia.
The alternate WWI could look something like France, Russia, and Austria/Prussia vs UK, Japan, Ottoman Empire, and Austria/Prussia. Italy likely sides on the UK side but if Austria is on their side they might go with France. That is how I see it going anyway.
Was Bavaria that worthy of notice? With the Prussian millitary hay day and the A&H man power I dont think they can be left off German politics.
Imagine geography class now...
I had to say I spent most of the video trying to figure out why you sounded different.
I have 1 counterpoint for this scenario. Its more likely that instead of the great powers intervening against Prussia because they siege Vienna, like you said, they likely wouldn't care as long as Prussia promised to only annex the German areas of the empire like Austria while granting independence to the other countries. This would weaken Austria, who everyone was against anyway, but also Russia because of new independent states whose protection is guaranteed by a stronger union of Germany and Austria. I don't see the other powers opposed to this option and would like to see a version of this scenario that takes that perspective into account as well.
How does josh only have 412 subscribers
My favourite timeline.
Germany still never truly united as the Austrian empire, Luxembourg, and German Switzerland were never admitted to Germany.
Bismarks Prussian Nationalism caused this.
The simplest alternative scenario is that any of the sons of George III of the UK has a son. That would have kept the personal union of the UK and Hanover.
That would mean any attempt to unify Northern Germany would involve war with the UK.
What if The Kornilov Affair succeeded
You forgot that Italy also joined the Austria Prussian war
I would like alternate history on Hanover. If the last King submitted to the Prussian tropes like other kingdoms do, the Hanoverian kingdom would still last until 1919 when the Germany completely abolished Peerage and Monarchies at that time and Fun Fact if the Hanoverian Monarchy would still intact until 1919 the last Queen would be the Kaiser's only daughter in which her wedding would be the last family event where Nicholas and Wilhelm meet
In 1866, wasn’t Hanover still in a personal union with Britain? If that’s the case, I could see Britain going to war over an invasion of the Rhineland.
Not after William IV, because in Hanover there couldn't be a regning Queen and a male relative of her became King. Nevertheless for the British establishment the Kingdom of Hanover was allways an unenlightened country which there weren't interessted in since George I.
I don't see Holstein going to Denmark. Holstein was Austrian territory at that point in time. Why should they give it to Denmark?
It would be more likely that only Schleswig would be given back to Denmark. Or maybe it would be cut by the modern ethnic border, only the north given back to Denmark while the south also going to Austria.
No discussion of Russia and the Crimean War which would presumably not take place....Rusian Constantinople?? HUGE!
Josh sounds like the voice actor for Robin in Teen Titans
What if mughals/ marathas modernized?
In a scenario where both Prussia and Austria are very weakened, quarreling with each other and France, ruled by Napoleon III, is vying for influence across Europe against Austria, Poland for sure would be a hotbed of pro French sentiments.
In our timeline, with overpowered Prussia allied with Austria and sometimes Russia, Poles (and Lithuanians) were already rebelling every 15-20 years (unsuccesfully). In Poland Napoleon was, and kinda still is today, remembered and revered as a saviour who fought against Poland's occupiers and even after his defeat, Napoleon's dynasty was massively popular for decades. Not to mention that a huge Polish and quite influential Polish community lived in France, imigrating there first after the Partitions and then after Napoleon's defeat, re-partitioning of Poland and after every failed national uprising.
So in this scenario I'm willing to bet that in the case of any war between the French Empire and Austria or Prussia there would be a series of massive pro-French uprisings in Poland. Maybe even backed financially by the French.
Please do who would control or influence these smaller German. kingdoms.
Like would UK FRANCE ITALY POLAND AUSTRIA. Make them join TRADE and DEFENSE unions-/-agreements.
How why this alternate world wars would still happen.
Who be ALLIED with who and would these smaller kingdoms be controlled by larger nations or be "mostly"-autonomous allies.
Wow, he sounds so different than what he sounds like now.
What if Australia gained Independence from the UK?
**Deutschlandlied in minor key played**
You forgot an important detail here. Russia. Tzarist Russia was actually doing really well at the start of the 20th century. It was massively industrializing at the time, and its population grew rapidly, until the communists took power and overturned every social structure they could find. Had russias population developed like everyone elses in europe at the time, they would have become an industrial titan with a population of 500 million.
Without the powerhouse that is germany to destroy russias soul in 2 world wars, they would have become a most dominant of powers. There is no way that russia, once it fixes up its problems, would allow prussia and austria to expand into the baltics, poland or the balkans, or allow prussia to keep what it already has for that matter.
Not only that, but France and the UK, seeing russia as a threat to the stability in europe, would overcome their differences to do whatever is in their power to overpower russia and put them into what they deemed to be their place, even if this involved letting prussia regain power in germany, which, unlike in our timeline, would be the smaller threat to the european balance of power, as well as a very valuable ally in the baltic, which, keep in mind, would be russias home waters, and their only way to bring battle to the british and french (seeing how any breakout into the mediterrean, were whoever controls Istanbul by then were to allow it, would bring them no closer to the UK, as they still have to get past their mediterrean fleets, and the bases that come with it).
I reckon that by the time 1940 rolls around, the russians would have started to build up a fleet that could pose a serious threat to the UK if they so intended. And it doesnt take a genius to figure out that the best way to defeat an island nation is to cut it off from supplies. And really, if the russians wanted, they could probably win a naval war against the UK and France by simply drawing them out, at which point, the only thing standing between the UK and a russian naval invasion of it might be to tie russia up on the ground. And since the prussians and austrians would have no reason to work with the russians and plenty to work with the french and british, they might grant prussia and austria some power in germany out of sheer necessity, just like they did with the soviet union in our timeline. And really, in this scenario, they would need every ally they can get.
What if the Dogger bank incident triggered war between Russia and Britain?
What if Mr z wasn't born
What if Germany united in 1848 would be a cool Szenario
This sounds like a HOI4 mod!
I'm doing a similar timeline it's where Austria wins the battle of Sadowa.
No ww1 or ww2.
I’m sure Bismarck would have a plan
• What if the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth successfully formed an alliance with France, Austria, and the Ottomans in 1770 against Russia and King Stanisław II?
• What if Napoleon III allied with Austria against Italian unification?
• What if Italian King Vittorio Emanuele II took the throne of Spain instead of his son Amadeo while STILL being king of Italy? On top of that, what if he also took up the French throne in 1871, and eventually the Portuguese throne in 1910, sorta recreating the Western Roman Empire?
The polish-lithuanian noblemen from Bar Confederation had the good intentions, but they were just a bunch of disorganised guerrilla fighters who in fact wanted to preserve the worst aspects of the Commonwealth's political system: privileges for noblemen, decentralization of power etc. There was no way for them to succeed. More realistic scenario would be for the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth to successfully defend the Constitution of 3 May 1791.
@@JohnSmith-zs9vr That scenario was also my alternative, though I’m not entirely sure how it would be executed. I know Poland and Prussia had an “alliance” in 1790 but it was pretty much made void when Poland began its reforms. Could Poland maybe convince Prussia that Russia was the greater enemy?
