(Left this up for when I was running Mike's sites; leaving up for now.) An old Mangini drum solo - recorded by a fan in the crowd at an Extreme concert (Hammerjacks, 1995).
he is really insane. up to a point. he is great in this era up to the early 2000s. even at the audition. but in dt, mike is bad as a sidesman. he is like being controlled and not himself. maybe it was the pressure or what. im a super fan of him before and have an autograph of him. but portnoy is dt. he belongs in dt and mike is just an outcast and i feel like dt is holding him back.
Mike is a living legend, I've seen him once with Extreme & twice with Steve Vai. He's a very smart drummer, genius if you ask me. I want to be like Mike. Mike rocks!!!!
My favorite drum solo of all time. I’m not even a huge Mangini fan. Don’t get me wrong, he’s a bad ass. But after seeing this solo for the first time many years ago, I was blown away by the creativity, power and that rototom set up!
"excuse me, can i watch any mangini video with no bitching comparisons between him and portnoy?" guys, this isnt even dream theater related! it's been four f-ng years! come on!
***** no, because i am a huge portnoy fan and i hated his leaving from the band. but i know complaints about it are just as annoying as the "oh mangini is soooo much better" b-s.
@Vic Santiago wrong, even mangini have said that what porntoy did on several song is just perfecto.... So, watever, if your are talking just about technique, then forget I was here, I don't care that issue...
When I saw Exterme in London in 1995, the thing that stood out was Mike's drum solo. Probably the most amazing drum solo I've ever seen! Those one handed drum rolls and his spedd was mindblowing!! Thanks for posting.
I love this guy, one of my favorite drummers! He's also really awesome in person. Very friendly, super nice and a bit goofy. Met him at a day of percussion in 2004 (shorter hair then...)
during this same time frame, mike did a clinic for my drum department. after setting this kit up, i asked if i could play it. he said yeah go ahead... very interesting setup. all toms are in a "v" setup. i asked a hell of alot of questions about what he's playing. all i can say is...damn!
I saw him at the Beachcomber on Wollaston Beach in like 92ish while he was playing the absolute shit out of his at the time Roto Kit with the Rick Berlin Band. It was absolutely mind blowingly Frightening. He was also teaching drums with the Waltham School District at the time. Mike Mangini is a cerebral Assassin and a phenomenal Drummer.
I've already replied to this but I'll say it again, quite probably the greatest drum solo I've ever seen in my life. I saw him do this when they played inLondon in 1995 and I was awestruck and never forgot it. Thanks for posting.
Awesome! Thanks for posting. I saw them live with their original line-up and they were great, but when I saw them with on this very tour, I was right in front and THIS is what I remember most-- more than Nuno's solo(and I'm a guitarist), and EXACTLY as I remembered!
Brilliant! I have enormous respect for this guy! I don't believe you can officially compare him(or any other drummers) to any other drummers! Everyone of the drummers mentioned below are astonishing to hear & watch, I think each of them has something completely individual to offer. I think there all great.
Hey man, Mike Mangini isn't just about speed. If he was, he wouldn't be teaching at Berklee. I don't think he is the "best drummer" or anything, but the man is definitely very good. I haven't been part of any of his classes yet, but I have seen some of them when I am walking by, and he knows what he is doing.
Nobody can say that Mike didn't work his way to the top getting better and better as he practiced religiously and taught percussion. Congrats Mike, you are a drum God my friend!
il m'a donné des frissons et c'est rare en musique ! merci Mike de passer sur Terre : Solo musical , technique et virtuose tout ce qu'il faut : Bettencourt et Mangini très bon concept
Off the freakin charts! Not only is he incredibly fast, he's amazingly articulate, funky, smooth and has an incredibled drum sound. I agree with drulius, the roto toms really have a distinctive and unusual sound that I'd like to see explored more by some of the "bad boys" I wonder what Tony Royster Jr would do with them...he's always up for something unusual
A famous British military historian once said "talent is what a man possesses. Genius possesses the man". Mangini qualifies for both. Several other drummers mentioned in these comments also do.
Oh man... that is incredible in SO many ways. Bummer that Mike never really has gotten the cred he deserves. I saw him in clinic a couple years ago and he was ASTOUNDING... and a super-cool guy. His playing is like a PHD-level math course! His mirro-image kit concept is awesome and he knows how to use it!
Mike Mangini would be perfect for Dream Theater. He has the energy like Mike Portnoy. I really hope that they make a good decision and get someone like Mangini. I can't wait to see what their decision is going to be.
lots of dream theater fans STILL dont understand just how insane mike mangini really is.
he is really insane. up to a point. he is great in this era up to the early 2000s. even at the audition. but in dt, mike is bad as a sidesman. he is like being controlled and not himself. maybe it was the pressure or what. im a super fan of him before and have an autograph of him. but portnoy is dt. he belongs in dt and mike is just an outcast and i feel like dt is holding him back.
Mangini is a monster. This tour was something all its own, with Mangini and Nuno flexing their musical muscles. Absolutely incredible.
Mike is a living legend, I've seen him once with Extreme & twice with Steve Vai. He's a very smart drummer, genius if you ask me. I want to be like Mike. Mike rocks!!!!
I want to be like a manginifan
WHAT!! I never imagined mangini looked so metal!
I love these melodic solos.
5:10 GODDAMN! He's a literal blur.
My favorite drum solo of all time. I’m not even a huge Mangini fan. Don’t get me wrong, he’s a bad ass. But after seeing this solo for the first time many years ago, I was blown away by the creativity, power and that rototom set up!
🐐🐐🐐
amazing... he's the best of the best

Right...they have break my balls..oh my god..they are very frustration
@Vic Santiago wrong, even mangini have said that what porntoy did on several song is just perfecto.... So, watever, if your are talking just about technique, then forget I was here, I don't care that issue...
Lol! Right!???
Wowww.... Super wowww....
Gary Cherone, Nuno Bettencourt, Mike Mangini and Pat Badger in the same band...
WOW
I totally love the sound of the "roto-tom set" :D It's so rough and intense! And yet kinda deep.
The sound of this kit is fucking brutal. Amazing!
I really think mangini is one the greatest musicians/performers I have ever seen
He's insane woah!
Love Mike M!

setuju...
Great independence! Love Mangini!!!
Keep coming back to this for the amazing playing and the bright yet warm sounding RotoToms. Fantastic, never ceases to amaze.
the remo toms sound better than his current pearl, imho.
Thank you so much to the guy who recorded this solo !
Nuno and Mangini, the best.
I love this guy, one of my favorite drummers! He's also really awesome in person. Very friendly, super nice and a bit goofy. Met him at a day of percussion in 2004 (shorter hair then...)
Wow, that was one of the best drum solos I've ever seen, and I've seen thousands!
Can't enough of Mike's solo here...
It's just kinda ... perfect.
totally, totally amazing! could watch him forever! dt couldn't have picked a better drummer! go mangini!
Mangini isn't my cup of coffee... But here he's AMAZING! Great skills and, moreover, musical taste!
His solos are so good, especially his older drumming, like that time of this video. Marvelous!
I love Mike Mangini - saw him @ modern drummer festival - he was GREAT
LOL
Tom
This is my favorite Mangini solo.

very interesting setup. all toms are in a "v" setup.

That's probably what I would have said to him.
Amazing drummer, and great person.
Wow, it seems that he's a really nice guy.
What size were the bass drums?
24" if I remember correctly
Mangini is simply amazing!! It also looks like it would have been a hell of a concert to see!
mangini has set new limits in drumming ,he is way more advanced now than what he was then and that kit is awesome, I want a kit like that.
This was at my old hangout in Baltimore , MD
Man ,I miss those days at HammerJacks
I saw him at the Beachcomber on Wollaston Beach in like 92ish while he was playing the absolute shit out of his at the time Roto Kit with the Rick Berlin Band. It was absolutely mind blowingly Frightening. He was also teaching drums with the Waltham School District at the time.

this is how it all started, he started as a snowball and came out a glacier

Wow... mangini is always off-the-scale ridiculous! Thanks for posting!
FIERCE handspeed, EPIC independence, and EXTREME (pun intended) srumming. I am actually impressed!
#1 spokesperson for Remo Rototoms without saying a word...
he´s an alien... just amazing
absolute command of his kit. The poly-rhythms are intense, but he uses them so musically, dropping in and out of them quickly.
damn this is really a great drum solo

Thanks for the post. You've made an old man very happy or is that a happy man....etc Genius technically and a pleasure to watch. Thank you again.

every drummer is in a way an artist and therefore unique. you CANNOT compare 2 artists/drummers/musicians.
this guy is awesome, in his own unique way.
I'm using his signature drumsticks for 4 years, so I'm happy that DT chose him, all the best an congrats!!!
Pretty incredible, there's nobody who does it quite like him.
Art! This Is Art!!!! *bows*
this's damn cool, brilliant improvisation.... i love freedom....
excellent...thanks for postin
I was at this show....great memmories!
4/29: 5 days after my birthday. Best gift ever, you could say lol
First saw him playing on this tour at the Hammersmith Apollo in June 1995. I didn't know who he was but my jaw dropped when I saw him play this.
Whoa! Man-genius always blows me away!
From 5:08 till 5:25 is just incredibly fast . I can only think of one drummer who can probably pull this off. Gergo borlai.
No.. I don't think there's a human being that can do that except him
@@belliiahmed ua-cam.com/video/uPULBTYaKdE/v-deo.html. 9:07 on. Pretty close I'd say. The whole solo is crazy.
Wow, what a video. I'd never seen Extreme live before. They were all heart onstage!

Holy shit. Brilliant!
THE GREATEST OF ALL TIME 🐐👑

I was all "Oh, this is fifteen years ago, surely his solos weren't as humanly impossible back then."
...I was wrong.
Yea, that's some very good timing and very fast speed.
he's just a beast!

Brutal!!!
Wow... All the way back then Mangini was a MONSTER !
