"A House" - Sleep Recital (Drum Play-Along)
Here's a vid of me playing along to the song "A House", which I recorded drums for last year for our band, Sleep Recital (sleeprecital.com/). I actually have footage of me doing this in the studio, but the footage was chopped up and problematic. So I just had my wife hold the camera while I recorded a quick take playing along to the recording (not very warmed up). There is a rough spot or two, but it's close enough to document my drum part, which I thought was fairly interesting and fun on this song. Thanks to my awesome bud Travis Orbin for putting the audio & video together for me!
Notes:
- Tempo = 143 bpm
- First and second verse (0:22 and 1:43) -- the hands are playing a paradiddle/doubles pattern (rlrr lrll rrll rrll for the most part).
- First chorus (1:15) -- A pretty unique part. The feet utilize all four pedals (double-bass, two hi-hats) in an ostinato-type pattern that builds and finishes in double-time. ...Deceptively hard to play balanced and clean until the practice is put in!
- Second chorus (2:10) -- a couple of progressive-styled fills thrown in.
- 3:03 - Peart-inspired bridge groove
- (3:40 to end) Ending jam/guitar solo section -- I would approach this section in a different manner these days, but when I recorded it on the fly last year this is what I did. Some typical proggy fills here and there.
The album is free to download, now: sleeprecital.com/download.htm
(Only one of the singles is still for sale: itunes.apple.com/us/album/other-than-myself-single/id580183200)

I just stumbled across this; don't think it's here on UA-cam yet. Left this up for when I was running Mike's sites - leaving up for now.
Hypercane with Mike Mangini solo - Kashmir

(Left this up for when I was running Mike's sites - leaving up for now.) This is the band Hypercane, doing a rehearsal of Zeppelin's "Kashmir." Mangini is guesting on drums. Gary Cherone is here practicing vocals as well. Mangini launches into (imo) an extremely tasteful solo, nicely touching on several of his trademarks. This is completely awesome. I haven't seen Hypercane live, but do support...

(Left this up for when I was running Mike's sites; leaving up for now.) ...The end of Mangini's solo (which I shared in full in another vid), going into the song "Play With Me". ...A fan-recorded vid (Hammerjacks, 1995). Nuno's solo - awesome as always.

(Left this up for when I was running Mike's sites; leaving up for now.) An old Mangini drum solo - recorded by a fan in the crowd at an Extreme concert (Hammerjacks, 1995).
I can still remember when I was a better drummer than Mike...of course he was 4 yrs old then.
For anyone who thinks men can't be muli-taskers
Monster!! 😎😎😎😎
just crazy, i'm one of those dream theater's fans that have been so unfair with mangini... hats off and apologize
Im sad that i didny get to hear nunos solo
THE GREATEST OF ALL TIME 🐐👑
My favorite drum solo of all time. I’m not even a huge Mangini fan. Don’t get me wrong, he’s a bad ass. But after seeing this solo for the first time many years ago, I was blown away by the creativity, power and that rototom set up!
🐐🐐🐐
Holy Crap! Half way through I looked to see where this was recorded and realized that I was there that night. Great memories!
Absolute Fucking Madman on drums. Incredible.
I mean, was there anybody playing anything close to this back then, or for that matter now???
90s were the best

Grunge hit hard bands like Extreme. You can see Nuno disguised as Kurt Cobain
lots of dream theater fans STILL dont understand just how insane mike mangini really is.
he is really insane. up to a point. he is great in this era up to the early 2000s. even at the audition. but in dt, mike is bad as a sidesman. he is like being controlled and not himself. maybe it was the pressure or what. im a super fan of him before and have an autograph of him. but portnoy is dt. he belongs in dt and mike is just an outcast and i feel like dt is holding him back.
@@krioni86sa I honestly feel DT won’t ever return to the level of rhythmic complexity obtained with Mangini. AVFTTOTW being a primary example of how complex Manginis mind is working to the rest of the band.
@@pipps1158 maybe
I hate drummers like Mangini.he's probably the best drummer in the world,he's humble, kind and generous with his time..and he's good looking.hate him.:-)
Wow he was bad ass when he was younger
got to see mike do this roto kit solo with steve vai on the g3 tour
Way better band in 95 than in 2023...crushing here.
😅😅😅😅
6:35 gets all brutal
I saw him at the Beachcomber on Wollaston Beach in like 92ish while he was playing the absolute shit out of his at the time Roto Kit with the Rick Berlin Band. It was absolutely mind blowingly Frightening. He was also teaching drums with the Waltham School District at the time. Mike Mangini is a cerebral Assassin and a phenomenal Drummer.
whats the song here?
Cynical
At least the guy who recorded it got the guitar solo, the rest he was clueless.
Not a huge Mangini fan these days, but this stuff is actually pretty great. 😀 Mike was apparently a lot more vital and groovy back in the day. (And no, I'm not a huge fan of Portnoy either...)
💚💚💚💚💯
First saw him playing on this tour at the Hammersmith Apollo in June 1995. I didn't know who he was but my jaw dropped when I saw him play this.
Damn man. Roto Toms. Always wanted them.
Anyone who thinks Gary isn't a phenomenal performer is a little fucked in the head
From 5:08 till 5:25 is just incredibly fast . I can only think of one drummer who can probably pull this off. Gergo borlai.
No.. I don't think there's a human being that can do that except him
@@belliiahmed ua-cam.com/video/uPULBTYaKdE/v-deo.html. 9:07 on. Pretty close I'd say. The whole solo is crazy.
This is his best drum solo!
Keep coming back to this for the amazing playing and the bright yet warm sounding RotoToms. Fantastic, never ceases to amaze.
They're playing it too damn fast
The fact they’re playing it faster is just that more impressive
how he incorporated the solo so well into this song is beyond me to this day. Mike is the GOAT
Why is there none from the 80s..
Ok! Solo (I am faster) makes singers unconformable what is not the band is for. Sprortsman as I am, bäd Mangini this time.

Goks!!!🔥🔥🔥
#1 spokesperson for Remo Rototoms without saying a word...
The sound of this kit is fucking brutal. Amazing!
Back when Mike Mangina actually had something to say on the drum kit
1:22 i have the same reaction of Gary to hear the music on this velocity whooooa😱😱😱
Raw and energetic! Real rock music at it's finest!
Holy sheet
Mangini great solo drum
5:36 he trying to play "Illumination Theory"
Yes, but he doesn't play with the same "feel" as Portnoy. (Just kidding. He's amazing. I first saw Mangini play for Vai in '99, and again two years later at a drum clinic, and I've been a fan ever since. I purchased his two drumming method manuals 21 years ago, and I was thrilled to see him get the DT gig years later.)
Super!
Mangini technicaly is superior than bonham buuut bonham grooving is unmatched superior and because bonham plays behind the beat and mangini is too precise even i think that he plays a little after the beat
@Unsere Dreiwolf totally agree
A drumming machine
Waaaoooooo que rapidez
