He greets you, seems polite, and then begins scaling the tower. Suddenly, he falls, and he doesn’t get up. He is out cold, you’re sure he is dead, I mean how could he not be? He just fell 30 feet straight on his legs. You shake him, yell, scream even, but nothing. You decide the best course of action is to go to the authorities and let them know. Then, out of the corner of your eye as you begins to leave, he just sits up, smacks the dust of his finely sewn pants, and keeps climbing.
For the Key thing at around 27:00, i actually know this. It's a holdover from so long ago when major cities had walls around them to protect themselves from bandits and such. The Key to the City would be given to trusted people (such as merchants) so they could open the gates during the nighttime and come in when the gates would normally be closed.
yeah, in modern days now it's a purely ceremonial thing, a few years back a famous radio presenter got the key to the city I live in and he was presented with a certificate and a key keychain in a small ceremony which answers the other part of whether it even still happens or is just a thing in movies

46:45 it's not that Socrates was a dick, he was a contrarian. He actually encouraged free thinking which is what got him executed. However, pretty much nobody wanted to talk to him lmao.
Socrates didn't actually get executed for "encouraging free thinking" - much like a lot of Greek philosophers who were popular in the Medieval and Early Modern periods, he got a big glow-up because people would point at a random passage in one of his dialogues and go "this looks a bit like this idea I came up with last week, which means that my idea is actually super old and you should take it seriously". In reality, he was probably taken to court for a mixture of religious and political reasons - while he was only accused of "insufficient piety" (a serious crime in a culture that sincerely believed that pissing off the gods killed people), he was also in political hot water because he had, among other things, sided with an occupation government that the Spartans had set up in Athens five years earlier (which had gotten overthrown in the interim). He then proceeded to be such a dick during his trial that people who initially voted "not guilty" voted in favor of him receiving the death penalty. To put it in a modern perspective, it'd be like if an unpopular local politician got taken to court on corruption charges and their defense was "yeah, I took those bribes, and you should give me a medal and lifetime access to the treasury in gratitude" followed by "lol, I was only kidding bro, you should fine me $12 and a stick of gum, because that's what I've got in my pockets right now".
putting your hands in cracks is a real type of hold. famously that one guy that free solo'd a huge cliff did it mostly shoving his hands into a crack that went a lot of the way up though. jumping into it, especially with such speed going up or down, wouldn't just make you lose your grip in it, if you still tried holding in it it'd probably break your hand or worse

@@Iexcon Base to peak they're only a bit below average. When people talk about how the rockies are 6-14k while the appalachians are 3-6.5k, they're talking elevation since that's what matters to our bodies. You're forgetting they also START at a far higher elevation, there's a bit more than 4k average difference IIRC. The taller appalachian mountains would still be decently above average on the west coast and a few are some of the most difficult in the country. Though on average they're much less difficult since the overall elevation gives us more oxygen and heat to operate with. Now while the climb itself isn't nearly as bad, many climbers who come here from out west are shocked by the HIKE being far more difficult. many of the trails in the rockies will have a moderate incline, maybe two, until you get to the very steep mountain. With us you're half climbing up and down a 40 or 50 degree incline in slick mud and vegetation, going up and down and all over while you hope this rainforest doesn't rain. The mountains themselves are less dangerous, especially since we have so many places to restock. Still dangerous though.
As a climber volumes are big “holds” but are mostly used in indoor to replicate big surface areas in the actual mountains. I think what the developers meant were sloppers, these are slanted usually downwards and can be tough to hold especially since you can easily slip of them kinda like in the game but they are usually way more static even more than the cracks. When doing them statically they should be kinda like crimps in terms of endurance and when going dynamic it is good as it is now where you can only hold it for a small time to go to the next hold. A slopper is kind of a description rly since volumes can be slopy or jugs (rly good holds) a crimp can be slanted downward making it slopy or it can be pointy making them better in most cases and cracks can be angled outwards but ive never described them as slopy but I don’t climb a lot of cracks so maybe. Hope this helps

27:10 keys to a city were used in the past when city’s had massive walls with gates on them, and the keys were only given to a few select individuals and merchants as a sign of trust and a thank you form the city, so that they can come and go when they please rather than having to have someone unlock the gates for them which were always locked at night and no one would be around to open them(this is potentially incorrect so take it with a small grain of salt)
Taking "Silence" 9c route that Adam Ondra did as a reference for Quietude in Peaks is immaculate. Andos really has gone through hellaaaaalot of climbing
Hey Spiff, I know you're not likely to see this, but I want to say thank you. Thank you a million, Spiff, for keeping me sane this semester. You're the best :]
One thing I LOVE about the DLC is that many mountains (of the first 2 books) are in the same valley, so you can look around and usually see 2 or 3 future climbs. This was also possible in the main game but peaks are a lot more spread out there.

the castle of the swan king is actually based on a german castle called Neuschwanstein, or "new swan stone". its a real place and its one of the inspirations for the disney castle!
For those wondering about the key to the city, it was an olden-days thing where they had to lock the gates around the town to keep intruders or invaders out and the key meant you could enter and leave whenever that person felt even if the gates were locked.

To answer the city key question, it is currently just symbolic but in the past most city’s had walls with city gates that were locked after dawn. The city key was able to open that and was thus only given to those who were greatly trusted due to if the keys where to fall in the wrong hands it could cause disaster
As a vr enthusiast, technically we have two peaks of yore games called "the climb" and "the climb 2" (basically same game more features) which is kinda like peaks of yore. also love the vid spiff ❤
1:00:02 Side tangent on this: *Murder Mystery 2* on Roblox! The only game mode I ever touch is “Disguises”, originally titled “Hardcore.” It actually is the same idea as GMOD’s MM, with the random names, colors and all. I never touch the regular mode, as A) everyone has their individualized avatars, which makes it easier to call out the murderer, And B) Everyone who plays that mode will instantly to what I call “Finger Pointing”/“Pointing Fingers.” Even in “Disguises” it’s still an issue from time to time. In a game that’s all about being _relatively_ sneaky and smooth, having some instantaneously remove the _Mystery_ from *Murder Mystery 2* is, in fact, a very annoying prospect. Thanks for reading my discount TED Talk, and have a pleasant rest of your day, night, or evening.

Hope this helps
loaf turning off the computer and spiff cutting off at "OH-" is probably my favorite spiff moment ever now
also, this is my first time watching the vods before the video, and my god the time between each clip can get pretty damn long!
thanks for the awesome videos spiff!
I love the delivery guy in this DLC.
"Hallo friend! I have ze very important package for you! I'll just leave it on your porch where anyone can steal it!"
delivery services irl be like
All im thinking about at 53:30 is GoodTimesWithScar saying its time for super fast build mode
Makes sense!
Gonna need to Speedrun this Video now
Been waiting for this video since I saw the Ludwig video. It's amazing how fast spigg can get these out. Time to sit down and relax for 2 hours :3
53:24 “And with that, let’s jump into super fast climb mode…”
27:12 I thought I had gotten rid of my fear of heights. This brought it back. Thanks Spiff.
55:20 that’s such a wonderful moment captured in that picture! I’m so happy for you spiff 💕💕
YES, NEW PEAK CONTENT, THIS IS GONNA BE SO MUCH FUN
53:30 My first thought was Super Fast Build Mode :)
We love the hermit craft reference
Congratulations on the marriage sporf! You deserve as much happiness as you give all of us
55:40 the wedding photo's are awesome dude. You look so happy😊
43:03 as a teeny tiny youtuber who has a following about as large as the whole population of rhode island, these tips helped a lot, thanks sporf
Taking "Silence" 9c route that Adam Ondra did as a reference for Quietude in Peaks is immaculate.
Andos really has gone through hellaaaaalot of climbing
53:30 Super fast climb mode!
Hey Spiff, I know you're not likely to see this, but I want to say thank you. It's finals season right now, so I've been studying a lot these past couple of weeks, and keeping your videos on in the background has kept me sane. They've been a real lifesaver; I can keep them going in the background and focus on studying or switch to sitting down and watching them for a brain break. Thank you a million, Spiff, for keeping me sane this semester. You're the best :]
good luck with finals! make sure to stay hydrated and take breaks when needed, you got this :)
@irisv_d_h2251 Thank you so much dude, I will! I appreciate it. Good luck with anything you've got going on as well!
@@themulchmuncher1111 thank you!
53:25 its time forrrrr superfastbuildmodeeee!!!!
53:25 I can’t be the only one who immediately thought of hermit craft when I heard this lol
53:31
Some good speed-building music right there
One thing I LOVE about the DLC is that many mountains (of the first 2 books) are in the same valley, so you can look around and usually see 2 or 3 future climbs. This was also possible in the main game but peaks are a lot more spread out there.
Damn, that castle montage was super satisfying~ Always a fan of a well crafted music montage!
Also, congrats on the marriage Spiff! The pictures were incredible and you both look so happy. Here's to the future and your happiness!
Hope to see you hit 1 Million subs soon! If it happened by the end of the year, that would be insane.
so cool seeing actual rock climbing techniques being used in peaks of yore!!!
53:30 was not expecting Howling by Lupus Nocte to start playing. i instinctively starting sing along without really noticing it at first. because that's what i do when GoodtimeswithScar starts a building Timelapse to this tune
1:49:30
For anyone wondering, this “Lethal Company clone” is called, Subterranauts.
I would love to see a "hardcore mode" update to this game where falling from a lethal height resets your entire game.
New update: you can die, have fun
They do have it, there is "you fall you die" mode and "free solo" where you can die and you have no ropes
54:00 HERMITCRAFT MUSIC
@@yellow4488 super fast climb mode?!?!?!?
"John Yore" is a sick name. we should have every npc call your character that.
Hey spiff your one of my favorite youtubers ever ive been watching you since about early 2023 ive just wanted to thank you because youve gotten me through such a hard time my cat recently ran over so seeing you and loaf really always makes my day keep up the good work and ill always be watching your videos
when someone gets a key to the city it basically means they can come in at any time. back when towns and cities had gates that locked at night having a key meant you could enter whenever you wished
Your peaks of yore vids are probably my favorite vids from you (even though there's only been 5) they're all just so fun so I can't wait to see what other cracks you'll peak into
54:00 love that sync to lupus nocte
"your not ready for how epic this gaming is gonna be"
*falls*
I legit LOLed
34:15 A youtuber that hangs out with miners? How original
1:16 HOLY SH- formal spigg
Better have had loaf in a suit for the wedding
47:15 Nah, you're missing an option. Put it in a box, chuck the box in cement, bury the cement slab as far down as you can, and then move to the other side of the world permanently.
Between Plinking, Rainworlding, and Peaking, I love how many _____-ing words you have involving your content
the castle of the swan king is actually based on a german castle called Neuschwanstein, or "new swan stone". its a real place and its one of the inspirations for the disney castle!
For those wondering about the key to the city, it was an olden-days thing where they had to lock the gates around the town to keep intruders or invaders out and the key meant you could enter and leave whenever that person felt even if the gates were locked.
49:41 You know something good's gonna happen when the blue subtitles come out
started watching for great peaking content. kept watching for the amazing balance of stress from peaking, wholesome youtube advice, words of encouragement, and learning that everything is LOTR
6 MINUTES! plinK I'm so happy guys
Edit: all that crack talk was funny as fuck. I really *cracked* up.
I love that Nick has become a regular appearance in your vids.
55:31 SPIFF WHY DO YOU LOOK SO DAMN MAJESTIC
congrats on the wedding! you both looked fantastic and im so happy to have seen you grow, both as a streamer/youtuber and a person, from the beginning of the security breach era. your videos are some of my favorites.
also, when you mentioned how good youtubers can make you interested in watching stuff youre not directly interested in? youre that youtuber for me :) youre one of the only youtubers who i can watch play a game im not interested in
hope you and paige have a wonderful life together
Talk about how mascot horror mightave been hobbit had me dying. I always though of Practical effects and stuff from movies like Dark crystal and stuff. amazing Peakage
To answer the city key question, it is currently just symbolic but in the past most city’s had walls with city gates that were locked after dawn. The city key was able to open that and was thus only given to those who were greatly trusted due to if the keys where to fall in the wrong hands it could cause disaster
I’ve accidentally trained myself to get sleepy when I watch the vods 💀
As a vr enthusiast, technically we have two peaks of yore games called "the climb" and "the climb 2" (basically same game more features) which is kinda like peaks of yore. also love the vid spiff ❤
ever since ur ludwig video i bought the game grinded it and beat free solo tempest in 42 hours of gameplay. ty spiff love this game
1:00:02 Side tangent on this: *Murder Mystery 2* on Roblox! The only game mode I ever touch is “Disguises”, originally titled “Hardcore.” It actually is the same idea as GMOD’s MM, with the random names, colors and all. I never touch the regular mode, as
A) everyone has their individualized avatars, which makes it easier to call out the murderer,
And B) Everyone who plays that mode will instantly to what I call “Finger Pointing”/“Pointing Fingers.”
Even in “Disguises” it’s still an issue from time to time.
I would LOVE to see modified routes on the old mountains with the new holds
Such as being able to explore another way up Solemn Tempest from the opposite side, or maybe after an avalanche, the route needs to be re-routed
LETS GOO SPIFF IS BACK!!
(I stopped watching around when you started doing the gtfo videos because they were too long for me and I wasn’t interested with them. But I’ve loved everything you’ve done with peaks and lethal company. Love you spiff !!
Lets goo not just canadian but saskatchewanian as well. Didnt expect same province.
great montage at the castle, 10/10 edits
Thanks :D
LETS GO PEAKING
Lord thank you spiff I was having trouble and you gave me that final push on the toilet.
Hey bro hope ur shits are good from here on out…😢
Congratulations on the wedding, Spigg! Looking spiffy
The music-synced montage at 53:30 is absolutely peak. Well done
this video alone is a reson to do another spiff out of context video
Dw, I'm working on it
Loaf having a fascination with your power button is so funny to me. Maybe you should install like a deal or no deal button case that you can keep overtop the button so she can't press it.
