    A few more ideas that I didn't mention because.. well 30 mins long video already.. 😂1. Many of you are confused about the TDS measuring and how many ppm of fertilizer should you dose, 300.. 350?? what is ok?.. I think it's too early to tourment yourselves with that, just follow the label. The more experience and confidence you gain, the less it will matter. If you have hard water, I would not use it with orchids, but if you have to, use a quarter of what the label recommends, until you find a better water source. TDS meters are available on ebay, Amazon, etc., if you really want to start measuring things and go more in depth into the subject, which is great for your personal knowledge! ;) As for me, all my TDS meters are dead, turns out it's not the end of the world, my measuring days are over.. until I have reason to research and measure a new material I wanna try! 😜 😂 2. As long as you don't over do it, fertilisation is not a very exact thing, don't stress it, there is no guarantee each individual orchid absorbs the exact x amount of nutrients.. some will flush away, some may deposit slightly.. you don't want extremes, other than that it's all pretty variable whether we like it or not. Losing sleep over it is not necessary, don't stress and if you are concerned, flushing orchid pots with clear water will help flush excess salts! 🧡3. There are some orchids which are indeed heavy feeders (Catasetums) but this is something you will read in almost all articles, it's not a secret. Those can take more fert, but it's easy to over do it! so even if you under feed those, all is ok, be patient and go at it with the long term in mind, rather than results overnight.. overnight results are click bait ;) there's always next season to improve your catasetum game! 4. Some organic fertilizers are not vegan.. really! fish fertilizer? not vegan, not 'cruelty free'.. I see many vegan lifestyle (all products included) people buy into the 'organic is good, it's pure' marketing thing. Fish die for that fert, not naturally, just in case you didn't know! 5. There are 1 million and 1 opinions and suggestions of feeding (more or less accurate there lol) orchids and I personally.. don't care 🤷🏻‍♀️Imagine changing your whole nutrient regime, that you researched for years, read academic studies on, had real life experience with and documented on UA-cam for everyone to see over the course of years.. just because you see a clickbait thumbnail of a channel that has no archive of orchid development in time?? C'mon Bob 😂I prefer to improve on the basis that I have, rather than go from Michigan State University developed fertilizer to 'Banana in a blender'.. but that's just me. Aight, more info in the description 🧡

      If you are into Asian cooking, and have some MSG (Ajinmoto) lying around, you can probably experiment if that promotes rooting or growth in side by side experiment on 2 rejects from any local orchid/garden store if that is accessible to you. Lot of people around vietnam seem to use it, and some scientific papers have also been written on the subject. Regards. If you do try it out, please do post a video, or if you have tried in the past, and it didn't work for you, can you please reply, if you don't plan a video on the subject?

      Maybe if you divide an orchid into equal baby plants, you can give one of them additional feeding with water containing glutamate, and keep in identical conditions, to see if there is a difference.

    About bloom boosters... If your plant is experiencing a P deficiency (whatever the signs) perhaps because it's using up it's P storage to produce flowers, then a high P fertilizer could be useful during blooming. However, if your plant has enough P to begin with, you cannot force it to absorb more no matter how much fertilizer you use, so all that extra P will just sit in the soil, potentially harming the roots.

    It is so nice to hear coherent and relevant i fos from a youtuber. Hormones shouldnt be encouraged as "supplements" for plant keeping just as how it is marketed and hyped by other influencers. It is compared to Spirunolactones and drugs, these things must be used under extreme caution as someone with a degree of education, i may sound exaggerated but really, even if plants are hybridized by so much, that doesnt change the central dogma of life, the things we must do as gardeners is to provide what is necessary and let plants grow and do what they do in nature.

    My moth orchids bloom like clockwork every year, all 9 of them, pretty much at the same time. However I have 10 orchids, and one is a rescue from a business lobby -- a very large moth orchid plant that orginally had two tall bloom stalks. I brought it home, repotted, have loved but after almost one year, it has with vigor, grown lots of air roots, and yes new leaves but no blooms. Am hoping fertilizing it might work, or not. Still happy I rescued it.

    I have used liquid Kelp (over 100 micronutrients) and Fish emulsion in a Miracle Grow Sprayer for many years (50%/50%) with outstanding results in my flower beds. It absolutely does require knowledge of pH and what the individual plants need since micronutrients are only released within a certain range to the plant. I switched over to organic gardening completely about 40 years ago. My plants, which I visit each day, rarely have any problems and are beautiful. I actually gave away all my chemical fertilizers and most of my chemical sprays except Neem Oil, Captan, and soap in a spray bottle. I switched mostly to taking care of the soil properly resulting in a tremendous increase in earthworms and beneficial insects that eat the bad insects. With my house plants, I use Schultz Liquid fertilizers (7 drops in one quart) with excellent results. My Orchids are strong and very prolific with Schultz. I love watching your videos because you are so knowledgeable!

    Compo actually has a fertilizer that also has Calcium, it's called "Compo Complete". Oddly enough they list it as an ingredient on the front of the bottle and in the marketing material, but it's not included in the detailed nutrient breakdown. So it's unclear how much is actually contained.
    I think the reason why many fertilizers lack Calcium is because tap water, which most people use to mix it, usually has a certain PH and Calcium in it anyway.

    What are the diferences in fertilzing between terrestrials (like Zygos) and epiphytes? Do they prefer a different kind of feed. For example, I do not use orchid fertilizer for my Zygos anymore because it was becomming quite expensive. My Zygos are pretty fat btw😅. So I started using normal plant food shortly. They do grow better and bigger then ever, but I do notice less spikes. That could also be due to the unusually dark winter, though.

  • @crestedargo4663

    Hi Danni!!! I'd like to share my experience. First of all, last year I used an organic fertilizer with my orchids; all summer long I soaked my Phals and Catts, then I emptied the solution (water plus fertilizer) in the pots of my roses, which are on my balcony. Well, you know what? My roses produced strange, "mutated" flowers: in particular new buds formed within old flowers distorting and destroying them. Now I thing it happened because of the organic fertilizer...
    Second point: all the "complete" fertilizers that I can find in my country DO NOT have any calcium or magnesium. I have to add them, mixing fertilizers with only calcium or only magnesium with the "complete" fertilizers. I have been doing this only for three weeks, after discovering that my orchids probably had strong deficiency of calcium and magnesium.
    Third and last point: it is easy and generally correct to follow the instructions given on the fertilizers to dose them, but if you do the maths you see that, doing so, the dosing can be extremely different. I have a liquid fertilizers which is a 1.5-1.5-1.5 for ml and they recommend to use half a measuring cap (which I measured and it's 4 ml) in 2 liter of water; in the end you get 0.03 grams N + 0.03 grams P + 0.03 grams K for each liter of solution. I also have a liquid fertilizers which is a 5-5-5 for ml and they recommend to use a whole measuring cap (which I measured and it's 10 ml) in 3 liter of water; in the end you get 0.17 grams N + 0.17 grams P + 0.17 grams K for each liter of solution, which is nearly six times the concentration of the first solution! That is clearly not the same... Who is right? Probably the second one, because if you mix 1 gram of a classic 20-20-20 powder fertilizer in 1 liter of water (which is a quite standard dosage), you get 0.20 grams N + 0.20 grams P + 0.20 grams K for each liter of solution (that is quite similar to the second solution). However, this also means that the first liquid fertilizer is way too diluted...
    Such a long comment, I'm sorry 😂

I do have a (maybe stupid) question about slow release fertilizer... it says it is good every 6 months does that mean I have to repot the orchid every six months to add fresh fertilizer to the second top layer? Where do I add the fertilizer if I don’t need to re pot? Is it ok to push it down and leave the old pellets in there as well?

      Every 6 months means the orchid must be replenished with a new stick. Simply add it to the same medium. Normally one repots orchids every 2 yrs. Good luck.🙋‍♀️

      Hi, nope I would never use organics that need to decompose in an orchid pot, it won't act like a compost pile. Better use orchid fertilizers that are already processed to their final elements 😊

    Good advice. Don't try to over-think Mother Nature. She works in the simplest and most efficient way. It is best to imitate Her rather than to seek to improve what 1000s of years of evolution has refined overtime. With plants, "Less" is most often better than "More". Observing the effects of what is happening based on what you are doing is often the best way to decide what changes you might make.

    I use rain water that is around 6 PH. When I add 1/2 tsp MSU to 2 gallons, it drops the PH all the way to 4. Maybe I got a bad batch?

    • @MissOrchidGirl
      @MissOrchidGirl  26 днів тому +1

      Hi, pH 4 sounds quite nice actually :) this happens due to the very low kH (carbon hardness) of rain water in general. KH acts like a buffer to pH swings, very important in aquariums, not important for orchids. I would not worry as long as you follow the label, also keep in mind that the potting mix will swing pH however it wants as well, no matter the initial pH since you don’t have any buffer in the water. Bark has a 5-6.5 ish pH and sphagnum moss 4-5.5 ish pH, depends. So all is ok :)

    Hey Dany,
    Is it a SC Chester??? (18:50)
    I just searched if i can find information to it. Have you talked about it yet?
    Mine is soooooo weak. I have it for some years now. I have no idea if she has a fungus, or if she is missing nutrients. I fertilize very rare to be honest. 🙈
    To fertilizers. Is there a big difference if the fertilizer is clear or brown? Mine is brown and i have the feeling, that it is coloring the roots. So i use it just every other day.

    • @MissOrchidGirl
      @MissOrchidGirl  3 роки тому

      Hi, yes it's the Chester and yes, not the most vigorous, but not very finicky either. Could be a problem that yours might have sadly 😔 the color doesn't matter much, but why would you fertilize so often? The stain could come from tanin in the wood, or tanin in the fertilizer, nothing bad, but is it a stain or a burn?? I would reevaluate a bit the frequency, make sure what you do is ok 😉

      @@MissOrchidGirl how many years do you try to save an orchid? I mean she is not dead, but sure not healthy.
      Exactly. I am not sure if it is just stain or burn.
      That's why i fertilize maybe every 4 months or longer.
      😓
      Since i know you, i know that i should feed them more often.

    Whoops. I just bought a fertilizer last week, and didn't realize it said "bloom booster" on it. I have no intention of trying to get my orchid to bloom all year round, so I suppose I'll use this until the flowers all die off, and in the meantime find a good all-around fertilizer! The last time I ever fertilized a plant, it was a poor African violet I had in my teens. I wanted her to live the best life ever, but it was pre-internet and I didn't know that those fertilizer spikes are WAY too much...and killed her. I've been afraid of fertilizers ever since. 😅😂😭
