VEX IQ Slapshot 125 Points | New Robot: Shotgun

  • Former team 97300J presents our second robot of the season: Shotgun. Shotgun can score quickly and efficiently in the 3-point and 4-point zones using a shooter. It can also dispense all 45 disks and score 28 of them in the scoring zones for a total of 125 points alone in driver skills, utilizing all of the different types of dispensers.
    We will be continuing to improve on this robot and practice driving to hopefully get a higher score in the near future. Any suggestions for improvements or questions about the robot are welcome.

    2m drive

    my team built a similar robot (ben liper helped us) and the max amount my team scored was 175. very nice run

    Nice! My only tip would be to make the drive faster so you can get the last purple dispenser too.

      making the drive faster wouldnt be a good idea, because itll decrease other aspects, changing the strategy would be the best way, and also changing the drivetrain would be hard as they have already finished their robots construction

      actually I agree with making it faster, at least a 1.5/1 would be the best one, i drove a 2:1 ratio last year and handled it well so really all you need is just to practice with a slightly faster one for a more "cramped" game and you'll be fine

    Our team is experiencing issues with the disks getting clogged in the shooting mechanism.
    Did you guys ever experience that problem?
    If so, any tips would be greatly appreciated.

      Sometimes yes, the disks will get clogged in the shooter. I would suggest adjusting the shape of the magazine to be more circular, and adding little tweaks to try and make it get stuck less. We haven't figured out a perfect solution, but play around with it and see what works. Good luck!

    Hi Joseph just wondering if you will ever make a video breaking down the mechanism that you used for this robot? Also how do you get the disc to land perfectly in the hopper/magazine every time Thanks in Advance

      The short answer is that they don't always. Most on the time they'll funnel well, but sometimes not. Basically there are two key parts that make it work. First is the angled piece on top of the hopper that only lets a few through at a time. It's much easier to load a few at a time rather than a bunch all at once. Then there's the actual magazine. It is shaped as much as a circle as possible because that makes it harder for the disks to land sideways in it and jam, because more than one don't really fit next to each other, but it still does happen for us sometimes.     Hey, I had a question. From the screenshots, it looked like the motor for the spinner that was designed for the purple dispenser was just hanging in midair. Is it really doing that or it there some other support that we can’t see in the photo. Thanks!

      You're right, it is hard to see the beam in the pictures. Yes there is a beam there. If you look carefully, there is a grey beam attached to the long purple one. The motor is attached to that one. Does that make sense?

    Our team looked at the timing of your video, and what was taking the most time.
    We came to the conclusion that loading the disks into the magazine was taking about 10 seconds!
    We have had a similar issue and if you have an extra motor, we would suggest that you use it to create a mechanism that feeds the disks down the ramp. This mechanism works similarly to last year's intake mechanism. That will hopefully speed up the loading of the disks.
    We also noticed that you could gain many points by adding a reaching mechanism. We are almost done with ours but in the meantime, before we release that mechanism, here is a great one created by another team.
