      Hi Scotty, my car swerve to the left when accelerating and swerves to the right when I take my foot off the gas. It doesn't swerve when braking, and tire pressure in balanced in all of them. What should I do?

      Scotty Kilmer my car slightly pull towards left when i unhold the steering, i rotated the tires from left to right and right to left. It was more towards left pulling so i placed it back to their original places. What to do now???
      Moreover when i hold the steering the car moves on straight. Is this toe(alignement) or what?
      It is slight pulling

      Nice Video clip! Forgive me for the intrusion, I am interested in your initial thoughts. Have you heard the talk about - Patlarny Vehicle History Principle (should be on google have a look)? hello scotty! recently i had a customer request an alignment because of a pull. after only adjusting the right side toe i knew it wasnt the cause of the pull but being that it was very late in the day, this person paid and went on there way. a week later he came back. i have to thank you for this video as it served me as a simple reminder and saved me a lot of time, knowing that the alignment and tire pressure was good i simply rotated the tires free of charge. Keep up the good work scotty!

      Wrong. If alignment solves the problem, then the Honda Odyssey that my mom drives wouldn't be pulling to the right anymore. But guess what, it still is.
      The only reason is that one tire doesn't spin freely. My dad replaced and aligned the tires of this van. Now that he died, I have to deal with the stress he went through. So the tire pressure, which the valves and pressure have been fixed, despite the tpms light remaining on due the receiver malfunction, which is not worth replacing, the tires itself isn't the problem, but rather the spin should be

    My Civic did this, it was annoying as hell for weeks I took it to several different places and finally heard from one that it was not in need of an expensive alignment but it was radial tire pull and all I needed was a new one. Lucky for me it was still within it's 90 day warranty.

      @aurvaroy6670 5 років тому +1

      Yup 😊. There's so many people on the comments who keep saying to do an alignment and I just feel so annoyed when proving them wrong.
      All the dealer and mechanic wants is your money, that's why they say alignment. My dad replaced and aligned the tires of the odyssey to solve the issue of it pulling to right. And after he died, it still pulls to the right. So the most likely reason is that one of the wheels don't spin freely.

    if you mean the wheels drag when you try to spin them, the brakes are dragging. Bad callipers, old clogged brake rubber hoses, or bad brake master cylinders cause that.

    I suspect my Silverado Z71's G80 locker in the rear has something to do with my intermittent pull to the right. It only seems to do it on rainy days. When its slippery out it tends to lock and the rear end tends to chatter when making low speed turns which I know is not really an issue. You think my locker my be the culprit?

    I DIY alignment on classic cars because I had too many bad experiences at the shop. Some cars require shims and some alignment shops have none. Sometimes they only do toe or do +1 when I gave them -1 on paper. First time is a little time consuming but second time goes pretty quick. Digital angle finder is my friend. DIY allows you to tune out any mild pull by tweeking caster and fine tune steering effort vs tracking on manual steering.

      Hey Scotty, first of all, thanks for sharing your experience which is almost thrice as much as my age and for being such a honest and informative person. BTW my dad runs a alignment(both rod and camber), tyre repairing, wheel balancing, and general parts repair/replacement here in Oman and you won't believe the alignment we do here costs 10.39 US Dollar as the computer alignment usually costs 15.58 US Dollar and the customers from there usually come to us cuz the car still pulls to one side, he does it with a measuring rod of some sorts and checks the in/out by seeing the rear tires from the front and we also do camber alignment with cheap equipment. The shop has been running for 35 years and customers are very happy and loyal, and there are 2 people in Oman who still do it the old way, and he hasn't had uneven wear on his cars 5 years old tires. Just wanted to let you know that alignments can be cheap and work very well.

    • @spudth
      @spudth 7 років тому +3

      He's showing all the things you can check at home for FREE. Sure your caster can be off. (Toe out and camber really don't cause real bad pulling in general) Why pay $89.99 to have a mechanic tell you to get a new tire. Many service shops use the front end alignment as a FISHING tool to get work. Through an alignment repair shops can find need to replace Tires, ball joints, struts, strut bearings, control arm bushings, wheel bearings, rack, steering box, springs etc. If you can eliminate any bad parts before you get the alignment you will save $$$$. Most shops will not do an alignment for free once your car leaves the shop. In other words, if the alignment shows you need a ball joint and you choose to replace it yourself, you will then have to pay again for an alignment. Usually if the shop does the repair, the 2nd alignment is included.

    Hello Scotty, I recently bought a 2003 "Acura Rsx Base Model" and everything works fine on the car it has 147xxx Miles in it . Except one day I got on the freeway with my brother and it was raining and I was going the speed limit which was 60 mph and when I switched lanes I made a 360 spin on the freeway and that was a really scary experience for me luckily nothing happened to me and my brother we got out and made it home safe. The next day I told my parents about it and my mom bought new 2 new tires for the front, gave the car and alignment on the front and the back and changed the front left control arm bushing. But it still does the same thing even on the street whenever I hit a little bump or switch lanes, I feel the car pull to the left or right and I would really appreciate it if you could help me out on what else it could be because I'm running out of options. Please. Thank you for your time.

      If that RSX is rwd for whatever reason, its cause you hydroplaned without letting go of throttle 😆, that and sway bars, and or bald tires, camber due to messes up struts, etc, if its not the tires, its suspension, could even lead to motor mounts, when you accelerate and it pulls to that side, I advise you pop that hood and look at your motor mounts, if it steers right, check the one on that side cause that will cause you to veer off

      You know there's so many people who are not in the same financial situation as you. Just cuz you're filthy rich and can get new car after new car all the time any time doesn't mean everybody can.
      Please be practical. Why would u wanna switch to different cars. If you think about it, cars are treated the same as houses, but 10 times cheaper. Would you wanna move to a new house if your microwave stopped working? HELL NO! Would you want to move to a new house just because your garage isn't opening? HELL NO!!!
      Same goes for cars. Would you want to buy a new car just because your battery is dead? HELL NO! Would you want to buy a new car just because your old one pulls to the right? HELL NO!!!

    nice quick steering and suspension / wheel tests. You check for play that would rule out loose ball joints or upper controling/lower controlling arm joints or any loose steering/suspension components. You check tire spins freely to see if brakes where catching , you checked tires with doing sort of a tire rotation test which rule out out of round /access wear. But another thing would be pushing down on the car near the suspension to test the springs/struts that is the only other thing i could add for trouble shooting a pull to one side or a rattleing/noise in the suspension or steering systems of a car

    Road force balancing can detect bad tires, especially when they are new from the factory, some tire shops will sell you a defective tire, it’s good to have an honest mechanic who will road force balance your tire and send back a defective tire to the manufacturer, also some shops are not good at doing alignments , and may be quick to tell you front end damage or rust is the reason for your poor alignment

    get a carb overhaul kit and try rebuilding it. Or, if it's really bad, find a weber carburetor kit to replace it with. They are much better carbs anyway.

  • @scottykilmer
    @scottykilmer  11 років тому

    you jack it up and pull on the wheel for play. Then if you feel none, remove the tire and pull on the ball joint using a giant pray bar to see if loaded it has any play, they are harder to check as they often need force to check em, unlike things like tie rod ends that are easy

    it certainly can effect side pull. And if the bar won't fit, something is wrong. Either the wrong bar, you're putting it on wrong, or the frame is bent.

    Scotty makes the best tutorials in shortest clips, yet most entertaining way. Q: here, When my steering wheel is at straight center, the car moves to the right side, to compensate, I pull the steering wheel to the left in order to rein the car moving straight. I've checked cures you suggested but it not effective enough. Will tweaking my tie rods possibly fix it by moving the driver side tie rod more inwardly and the passenger side more outwardly. Does this make sense?

  • @onsway77

    Good advise about checking tires. Had hard pull. Checked alignment, tuned PS and inspected all steering components. Tires looked perfect. Disabled PS; still pulled. Only suspect left was tire. Switched tires around and sure enough I had a perfect looking tire that caused a hard pull. Guess the belt let loose internally after sitting over winter and driving flat spot out?

    @TeenIronMan of course it can, but you can't check that yourself, only an alignment mechanic can do that. But you can do this test.

  • @RobertMertensPhD
    @RobertMertensPhD 7 років тому

    Well, that worked. At least, changing the two front tires, and it started pulling hard right instead of hard left. But if I remember correctly, I rotated front and back tires because of a pull, so now I'm not sure which of my fronts and which of my rear tires are bad. All have semi-good tread. Hate to throw out tires with mileage on them.
    Thought I posted that - I guess not. There was also a steering wheel wobble, but it was the right-front wheel/tire that was bad. There's nothing obvious about either, but now it's driving straight. I did flip the two fronts back (I think you can't rotate left-right), sort of, actually, moved left-front (bad one) to right rear, right-rear to right front, right-front back to left front (where it came from).
    On your wobble video, you mention using a large breaker bar to put the lugs back on. I get that you're a mechanic with many years of experience, and I've been a DIYer since I was 12, but I learned the hard way to use a torque wrench to put these new wheels on, and use the spec. Mine require 100 ft-lbs. The guy at Firestone (also 45 years mechanic) read his chart and it said 120 ft-lbs. Also, he used a torque wrench, and then the shop rules required another mechanic to double-check with a different torque wrench.
    Anyway, this video was very helpful - many thanks. Now what to do about that bad tire in the right-rear....

  • @scottykilmer
    @scottykilmer  14 років тому

    @baudilus Spinning like that is normal. But if you have a bad wheel bearing, you will wobble pulling the wheel in Any direction. If it only does it in one direction, then it's a bad tie rod in most cases. Scotty

  • @scottykilmer
    @scottykilmer  14 років тому

    @baudilus Generally that's a bad tie rod, if the bearing is bad it will have play in all directions you pull. And wheels always grab some with brakes, that's normal. Scotty

  • @scottykilmer
    @scottykilmer  13 років тому

    @13FravelJ If they are really worn, they will have play when you jack up the car and pull on the wheel at 6 and 12 oclock positions. But if not, you have to load it up on the ground, put it in gear with the brake on hard, give it some gas and have someone look at the balljoints to see if they move any as you gas it. Scotty

    I found a shaking in my Honda by swapping tires around. It acted and felt like a
    bad CV joint. Would shake only when taking a slow turn. Swapped the front tires with
    the rear and the problem went away. I checked the tires and one was very much out of round. So swapping tires around is a good test. Yes, most are directional, but for a simple test like Scotty mentions, you can swap them left to right as well as front to back.
