Fun fact: The part where the Colonel tell Raiden to turn of the game console is supposed to be a callback to Metal Gear 1. Towards the end of that gameBig Boss will call you on the code and tell you that the mission is a failure and that you need to turn of your MSX2 immediately.
Bandicootfan63 I know right? I notice he did that, when i was playing Metal Gear on Metal Gear Solid HD Collection on Xbox 360. And man, that game was a ordeal, but i finished it. And now, i really want to finish Metal Gear 2 Solid Snake, even though that game is kicking my fucking ass very much.

In guns of the patriots you can find a circular crop of grass that’s been perfectly cut in around the 3/4 point in act 2, and the monologue plays and you get a trophy suggesting it was a UFO.
@@peepeepoopoovdbhxvbcc6683 I always think of that when I hear the story, because I didn't remember it from this game but MGS4. I didn't even realize "Campbell" was the one saying it.
"How should I put it, it was like they were... intimate. I'm sorry. Sorry to bring this up during the mission, but " Snake wasn't part of the simulation, but drama with your girlfriend was, 100%.
Out of all the horror games i've played. This. This right here was the most frightened and creeped out i've ever been in all of gaming. This was just so... wrong to me. The fourth wall was shattered over and over, the game demanded I turned it off. So many creepy and errie things were being said. I couldn't understand what was happening. Even knowing the truth after all these years hearing it all is just.. slightly unerving to this day.
i played it last year,i was playing for 6 hours i think and it was 3 am,when he said to turn off the game i was so scared that i did it, i cant sleep that day lol

After Raiden goes naked, everything goes mindfuck like heck. The name of Arsenal's area changed into random japan names, Colonel got corrupted, then start spawning all the twisted disturbing random things. While creepy and demented having such situation, I also laugh a lot by most of his crazy nonsense. One of the best is the easter eggs, simulation about UFO, talking about wolf and meryl, past life of a webworm, babbling about random alien purple pitchfork, and of course the BEEP!! Really got me laughing for real for some minutes, keep calling him on codex again and again.

It's because nobody who plays these games want's to listen to the codec conversations. Which is pretty sad because this game was fucking years ahead of its time.
Elissa Whichi I know because most gamers I know have the mindset I had when I was twelve (with playing games in general). And I hated Codec calls when I was twelve.
I remember playing this part of the game at 3 or 4 in the morning, I was so tired but needed to play the game more because I was addicated. It was super quiet and creepy in my house to begin and I was trying to stay awake. Than this scene popped up and I thought I was losing my mind. My jaw dropped and Im like did really just hear that. My heart was beating fast and I was like why would a game say that I must be going crazy. I turned it off and played again in the morning and found out it was part of the game.
"The oldest and strongest emotion of mankind is fear, and the oldest and strongest kind of fear is fear of the unkown." - Lovecraft, 1927. Kojima remains a master storyteller.
Oh man, I'm glad I'm not the only one that saw that. It doesn't seem to be mentioned anywhere on the MGS wiki. For a while I thought it was a live feed of Rose being held hostage.
Everyone's talking about Campbell telling Raiden to turn off the gaming console while I'm siting here wondering, "What was the colonel eating when Raiden called him?"
In mgs4 they give you a nostalgia bomb when you are tracking as snake. There is a quote and a shape in the grass that looks like its celestial. it was probably a ufo.
When Campbell tells to shutdown the console, I thought like, my parents hacked into the system. I was just a little kid who thought parents could do anything
Fun fact that alot of people dont probably realise or probably wouldnt even understand. at 3:15 when campbell starts talking about fortress galuade this in reference to metal gear ghost babel, a mgs game for the game boy colour that came out a year before mgs2 and was actually supposed to be an 'alternate sequel' to mgs1. Its very interesting that Kojima made such a nod to it as funnily enough Ghost babel actually teased Raidens existence with a piece of secret dialogue for completing all its VR training missions. Mentioning another VR solider who had been playing as through the events of galuade again called "jack". This was probably the only reference to raiden existing in the run up to MGS2s release might also hint, alongside the colonel AI's meltdown here that Galuade at least happened as a VR training scenario. Perhaps the Galuade mission did occur, but the possible outcome of Black Chamber rebelling never happened and as such that scenario just ended up as a shelved VR mission that they had raiden do alongside everything else he 'played' through. Pretty cool over all. Ghost babel was actually a really good game in terms of story, specially for a gameboy title.
I hear it's amazing when the famous purple stuffed worm in flap-jaw space with the tuning fork- does a raw blink on Hara-kiri Rock. I need scissors! 61! I remember almost dying from laughter when I heard him say that the first time.
this is pretty much the only game that is actually scary, all these jump scare monster horror games really dont do shit the breaking, no, complete shattering of the 4th wall was downright nightmare fuel, coupled with the fact that at this point in the game, most people were at this point when it was dark outside, and most people were relatively young, and the fact nothing like this has been done before or since. you feel helpless, you really dont know what the FUCK is happening, you have no weapons, no way to defend yourself, you're up against an entire hangar of elite genetically enhanced soldier who can kill you quicker than you can blink, and the one thing you thought you could turn to for answers, your codec, has gone absolutely haywire in the creepiest way possible. not going to lie, first time i played this when i was like 12 i actually restarted the game from scratch once i got locked in the tunnel and the video of the model appeared in the corner where the radar usually is, i legitimately thought i had shitfucked the game somehow. even to this day a moment like this hasnt been matched. and probably wont be for a very long time.
qwackduck essentially your tv screen, when the game speaks directly to you (the colonel) or the game acknowledging that its a game (arsenal gear onwards). pretty much interacting or referring to anything on the other side of the screen ('4th wall')
This is exactly how i felt it.I wa slike'Okay..my aunt and my sister always tell me im sitting too close to the TV and playing too many videogames..Now this is doing the same..hella creepy...' This still makes me nervous to this day. They really did this the right way..And like you said, the Codec is your info-bar.And Its gone completlay off the rails and acts like its gone to a bar.
You nailed it with your description. I also started the game from scratch thinking I had broken the game. Among the most terrifying moments I've experienced in video games, or even life in general
I feel like its more cool/interesting than scary, maybe if you play it when you're young its creepy or scary but yeah. I guess these days meta horror in games is more common.
To play this mission, there are things that are required -Play in the dark at night -5 or more extra large diapers -New pair of pants, ready to be worn -Max Volume
I think what helps this part is that all the shit started at about the same time. Raiden was forced to sneak through naked, he and Rosemary had relationship drama, his backstory came to light, you couldn't call anyone, and of course the False Colonel began falling apart.
0:52 When the realization hits hard when your talking with online friends for years only to remember you barely know anything from them. This hits hard, and in game you're basically accustomed to the codec calls being your nearest friendly human communication.
Holy shit, at 2:50 i rushed for my TV to fucking disable it. Holy shit. It WAS SO GOD DAMN SCARY! Its like you know you are not playing horror game, but suddenly there is some shit like that. I was thinking all this time that the screamer is about to be all over the TV, haha
This was pretty creepy; though the rose AI's occasional white blank eyes creeped me out even more- and her dialogue during the final battle wasn't much better either. I love how completely out of left field this was though, and some of the comments were completely hilarious - "I'LL DO THE FIGHTING, YOU CAN JUST GO HOME!" but yes, the majority of this was masterfully creepy and well executed. Wish it would have continued for longer though, they were really onto something here, but I guess the same could be said for the entirety of the Arsenal Gear section.
I was way too frozen on my couch seat to even pick up the remote a few feet away from me and turn off the TV. It was so late at night and I was surrounded by the darkness coming from the kitchen and dinner table and the front door, just the lounge room in the spotlight. I feared that something might come out of that darkness and take me away when I get up to rush at the remote so I kept playing just bracing myself for screamers.
Colonel: “You got a PSG-1? You can use that against Sniper Wolf. Hurry up and save Meryl!” Me: “Meryl was never factored into the simulation, leave her out of this!”
When I played this when I was 11, this part + the eerie music in the background scared tf outta me. I didn’t turn the console off but holy hell I was creeped tf out lol
I remember reaching this part of the game at the end of a 5 hour playing spree on my vita and when the colonel @ 1:50 goes "honestly, though, you have played the game for a long time, don't you have anything else to do with your time?" that shit scared me because at the time I really thought the colonel knew how long I had been playing and had just broke the 4th wall :o
This was genuinely unsettling the first time I played it. I had no idea what was going on and I seriously considered restarting my game because I thought something was wrong with it lol.
This scared the shit out of me at the time. Between these weird lines and campbell calling and telling me how long I've been playing, and that I should take a break... legit one of the coolest moments in gaming.
This game man. It was just... different back then. This game was an entire world for me when I was a kid. Im 30 now, im so glad there are many of us who can share our unique experiences with this masterpiece.
I love how Raiden just stops reacting during this segment of the game, as if he's already figured out what's happening. This part still gives me the spooks, music doesn't help, somehow I'm always at this part of the game at 2AM.
I know i'm late as hell, but i was recently playing the mgs collection and i almost shat my pants in this part, he just kept calling every 5 seconds saying a bunch of nonsense i was like " whaaaaat..."
Man, I could only imagine what would happen if something along the lines of this happened in the 4th game. Like, imagine for a few seconds, Snake having a conversation with either Rosemary, Roy or Otacon, and all of a sudden, the Patriots hijack their codecs just to screw with them all. Or maybe in Rising, with 'phantoms' of Vamp and Solidus trying to give Raiden a call. This, is how you screw with the minds of everyone who sees this.
“Noughts has all’s spent where our desire is got without content” “Basically it means that your desire can get you into trouble if you’re not careful” No no he’s got a point

Fun fact: The part where the Colonel tell Raiden to turn of the game console is supposed to be a callback to Metal Gear 1. Towards the end of that gameBig Boss will call you on the code and tell you that the mission is a failure and that you need to turn of your MSX2 immediately.
If your playing it on the MGS3 Subsistence HD Collection Big Boss would tell you to turn off the PS3 or Xbox 360.

After Raiden goes naked, everything goes mindfuck like heck. Good old MGS2, a good game with a misunderstood plot.... I liked it so much!
It's because nobody who plays these games want's to listen to the codec conversations. Which is pretty sad because this game was fucking years ahead of its time.
Elissa Whichi Hell, people still don't and won't a decade from now.
Terminal Creature Yeah. Really sad but most likely accurate.
Elissa Whichi I know because most gamers I know have the mindset I had when I was twelve (with playing games in general). And I hated Codec calls when I was twelve.
Munk451 I understood the plot, but the meaning of it was kind of lost on me because I never played MGS1 :(
I remember playing this part of the game at 3 or 4 in the morning, I was so tired but needed to play the game more because I was addicated.

You mean Ghost Babel was all a simulation too??

this is pretty much the only game that is actually scary, all these jump scare monster horror games really dont do shit
the breaking, no, complete shattering of the 4th wall was downright nightmare fuel, coupled with the fact that at this point in the game, most people were at this point when it was dark outside, and most people were relatively young, and the fact nothing like this has been done before or since.
you feel helpless, you really dont know what the FUCK is happening, you have no weapons, no way to defend yourself, you're up against an entire hangar of elite genetically enhanced soldier who can kill you quicker than you can blink, and the one thing you thought you could turn to for answers, your codec, has gone absolutely haywire in the creepiest way possible.
not going to lie, first time i played this when i was like 12 i actually restarted the game from scratch once i got locked in the tunnel and the video of the model appeared in the corner where the radar usually is, i legitimately thought i had shitfucked the game somehow.
even to this day a moment like this hasnt been matched.
and probably wont be for a very long time.

essentially your tv screen, when the game speaks directly to you (the colonel) or the game acknowledging that its a game (arsenal gear onwards). pretty much interacting or referring to anything on the other side of the screen ('4th wall')
This is exactly how i felt it.I wa slike'Okay..my aunt and my sister always tell me im sitting too close to the TV and playing too many videogames..Now this is doing the same..hella creepy...'
This still makes me nervous to this day.
To play this mission, there are things that are required
-Play in the dark at night
-5 or more extra large diapers
-New pair of pants, ready to be worn
-Max Volume
I think what helps this part is that all the shit started at about the same time. Raiden was forced to sneak through naked, he and Rosemary had relationship drama, his backstory came to light, you couldn't call anyone, and of course the False Colonel began falling apart.
0:52
When the realization hits hard when your talking with online friends for years only to remember you barely know anything from them.
That face on Campbell HORRIFIED me.
***** YES! THE FACE!
***** *Kojima laughs*
I was way too frozen on my couch seat to even pick up the remote a few feet away from me and turn off the TV. It was so late at night and I was surrounded by the darkness coming from the kitchen and dinner table and the front door, just the lounge room in the spotlight. I feared that something might come out of that darkness and take me away when I get up to rush at the remote so I kept playing just bracing myself for screamers.

4:18, okay some of this was creepy but that was just hilarious
"Snake... Remember what de gaule said......." That long pause used to creep me out 2:27

Paul Eiding's performance was perfect in this game.
