  • This lecture was created for Developmental Psychology course. It is based off the material from a popular college textbook (copywrite - can’t say which one) used in my course. The specific class is DEP2004 - Lifespan Development - Chapter 1
    This is a lecture that my college students listen too, but I publish for all students who are studying Developmental Psychology. The course I teach is focused toward nursing students.
    I am not a professional video production person or actor, just a really good instructor. So, no fancy graphic or dancing animated characters and yes, I am sure I messed up a few words. But if you are in an on-line class that expect you to just read a textbook, this will help. Check out the entire course of lectures.

    I'm having a major exam coming up to enter into a course and developmental psychology is a topic thats majorly emphasized upon. The subject is so vast and having not concentrated much on this subject during my classes, with the time restriction I got now for the prep, going through the books would take me forever. Was searching for playlists that could cover most of developmental psych and found yours! Truly grateful!! Thanks for this wonderful effort you've made. I'm sure it's going to be of great help to me, and so many others ^^

    Dear professor,
    I want to thank you for helping in my dream of studying psychology.
    I am not a US resident, nor a student for now. In my country, universities are free but you have to succeed at some very competitive exams.
    In my case the exams are on 3 courses of the 1st year and developmental psychology 101 is one of them, so here I am !!!
    I work overtime as a dishwasher and I dont much time to study.
    Your videos allow me to learn while I am at work.
    I Really appreciate your courses.
    I don't think I can thank you enough!!
    Thanks for spreading the knowledge to all for free.

    What does a developmental psychologist work on?

      It is true, it is a completely complete source that can help all psychology students. The video reminds us that resilience develops in childhood.
      In addition, this video was very important and interesting to me since we can see how, since we are children, thanks to the stimulation we receive, it will affect our adult lives. This is also influenced by the development that we are going to have, how we are going to make decisions, the management of emotions that we will have.

      I agree and I also find the video interesting, since it is a video that explains in a very simple and adequate way the way in which a person grows. I also confirm that the childhood stage is the foundation for optimal psychological development.
      It should be noted that cognitive and emotional development have a lot to do with adult life. In addition, this development is something that is shaped in the different stages of life.

    Ma'am I have a question
    Emily seldom has time for breakfast because she attends morning classes. So she feels the urge to eat since her stomach is grumbling and feels empty.
    This is an example of DRIVE or NEED

    • @rjbirmingham
      @rjbirmingham  Рік тому

      This is an excellent question. Due to the limitation of comments on UA-cam, I am going to over simplify the answer. The need for food is a basic need, as it is required for keeping the body running. The brain’s main job is to keep you alive.

      However, needs have hierarchy and while physical needs, such as maintaining a body, is a primary need, at this moment, it is not the highest need that Emily desires to fulfill.
      Let’s assume that being successful in college is an esteem need for her, and she has extra fuel that her body can tap into (even a bit of fat will do). This extra energy can be used to satisfy the bodies need for fuel. That need is then satisfied, for a short time.
      With the need for fuel satisfied then the esteem need will take president, the desire to satisfy her esteem need will drive her to want to get to class on-time. However, her body is warning her that it will need fresh fuel soon.
      The need for fuel after sleeping is great because the body has been in a type of starvation mode (no fresh fuel for a period of time). Esteem is a social need and is secondary to primary needs (physical and safety). As the body needs fuel and she is lacking fresh fuel, the brain may not completely allow her full access and use of her brain, keeping the limited fuel for necessary areas.
      One can live without knowing math formulas, but you must breathe. Thus, she may find that she cannot concentrate well during class. Her brain will not fully function till it gets a fresh supply (physical needs will always come first).
      Ok, this is really over simple explanation, but I hope you see how the systems work together.

      @@rjbirmingham What I am understanding from your reaction is that it is an example of a need. But to be precise, the words "urge to eat" they are really confusing and deviating me to think that it may be a drive.
      I chose need as an answer in the exam but just these three words are making me nervous about my decision.

    • @rjbirmingham
      @rjbirmingham  Рік тому

      @@vicharkranti142 I would say if it is a test question (depending on choices) it is a need - the body will send a signal that it 'needs' to each. In this case the 'urge' is the signal for the need.
      If the question when on and said the person then looked in the fridge and choose an apple, the apple would be the want to fulfill the need to eat.
