Sometimes these old relays (turn signal relay) get sticky on low current.
Starting (energizing) your starting system will kick start it. Intermittent on my emergency flasher relay. No biggie, just another beetle lesson. Thanks for the video.
    We all learn together

Thanks John, I couldn't have said it better myself. We all learn together. And yes sometimes when it's not working correctly I'll use the emergency flashers to kinda wake up the turn signals.

My first car was a VW bug 1969. Back in the day we didn’t have UA-cam or the inter web. I had to order everything from the JC Whitney catalogue! How much easier nowadays! Enjoy! She will serve you well my friend. Mine is still sitting in my dads barn waiting on a total rebuild.

Thank you. Yeah this has been a long postponed dream come true. I got the car a few months ago and I have been enjoying working on it ever since. It's just so cool to be able to dig into this piece of history and learn as I go.

The ring behind the steering wheel is for the horn pad contact connector.

Oh that would make sense. It is just an easy way to complete a circuit. Thanks!

"Out with the old..." (chucks old one) "In with the new!" That made me laugh :) This was a fascinating video Tom!

I have a 2001. I love beetles, especially the older ones.

Yeah I have never considered getting a newer one. My heart is very much with the old ones. But hey any beetle is a good beetle.

LoL that sounds about right... works then doesn't then maybe again, then stops for a week.... then its back again for a day, then gone next day, back for a week, then suddenly dead lol

Oh man you could not be more correct. It still only functions about 50% of the time.

Hey thank you for the DIY video on the turn switch mine just went out and I have to by another one for my 73 vw bug my first car but its pretty common for the turn signal to turn on even if the car isn't running. Did you get the get the break gen light to work next to the headlight switch

Your welcome! I'm glad you enjoyed it. I don't remember when or how, but at some point in the last year I did figure out the generator and oil lights.

How did you get the plastic cover off the steering wheel? I can't figure it out

    • @ThingsTomLike
      @ThingsTomLike  Рік тому

Which plastic cover part? I'd be happy to help but I'm not sure which part you are asking about.

@@ThingsTomLike hi brother, the actual cover or hooter/honk cover? So one doesn't see the nuts and bolts

Aha! Now I understand what you're asking. Unfortunately I can't help. My steering wheel is missing its plastic cover. It has never had one since I've gotten The Bug, so I have no idea how it comes off. Wish I could be of more help.

Thank you for getting back to me, I eventually got it off, just had to pull it off with a firm pull, feels as if you'll break it but it just pops off

Interesting. I'll have to keep that in mind if I ever replace the wheel. And yes sorry for the super late response. I just now discovered a feature in UA-cam studio which allows you to see any responses with replies that have not been replied to. So I'm catching up!

I just came in from the garage and losing my mind!. SHe's a 76 Bus Westy. Replaced the wiper washer switch. NOW the hazard lights don't work. The button lights but no flashing. The turn signals don't work but the green light lights up but doesn't flash. I checked fuses, switch wires, everything I could think of. Which isn't really a lot. If you see this, any ideas. Thanks, love your videos.

I wish I could help you but since replacing the turn signal relay I've been chasing my own electrical gremlins. I'll fix one thing and two other things go out and then I'll chase those down and the original something will have stopped working again. I was warned about this and now it sounds like you and I are both in the thick of it.

@@ThingsTomLike WOW, this classic car thing (VW) is quite the challenge. As if there aren't enough unwanted challenges in life, we took on this big one voluntarily. Oh the joy. LOL.
