I received the wrong part as well. Thanks to your video I think I can fix my wobbly steering wheel now. Thank you for making a clear and quick video.

Thx for this video! I followed what you did with the same "wrong part" for my 74 Super Beetle and got an excellent result. The steering column no longer moves around and the steering seems much firmer.

I had a "rattle" in my Steering on my '71 Super Bug. However, I could not access the whole Steering Column for its' removal. After 53 years, I discovered that the top bearing (40m O/D x 24mm bore x 8mm thickness) had lots of free play. I also noticed that the Outer Race (O/D) of the 24408 bearing was extremely 'slack' within its' Alloy Housing. First, remove the Half-Circlip, then remove the Full Internal Circlip (directly above the bearing). Get yourself a Dremel (or equivalent high-speed tool) and some diamond burrs. Bore through the old bearing, and make a 5mm hole, keeping the hole that you are making - come close to the Inner Race. Next, take a long (5mm shaft) Screwdriver, heat the end and make a right-angled 'hook' on the end of the blade. Screwdriver shaft needs to be about 150mm length . If you get this far into the process, place your hooked-end of the screwdriver through the bored hole in the bearing, and hook onto the rear of the bearing Inner Race. Attach some Irwin Grips to the other end of the screwdriver - and tap towards you. If you have a nylon Anti-Rattle Bush around the bore of this bearing - it will be an easy job. If your Anti-Rattle Bush is the spring-steel (fluted) type, expect this to take much longer to remove. Add WD 40 all around the bearing. I was forced to come-up with this solution, as my Beetle does not have a Fuel Tank. It has a Battery Box and Cabling containing Tesla Model S Batteries, and is 100% EV. If the Bearing Housing is a little loose - then add Loctite 641 upon fitting the new bearing. Greetings from Australia.

@@scrapdaddysgarage5027 This is just another method to remove the Top Steering Column Bearing, that I was forced to devise, without accessing the Lower Joints and the whole Steering Column Removal. It worked for me, just this week. Thanks for your reply. It might even make another video for you to try later.

Great video but I don’t see how the steering shaft gets grounded to allow the horn to work. I have a 1977 superbeetle and it looks like it is set up just like the beetle you have in the video. The problem is the outer part of the upper bearing is grounded but the inner part is isolated from the steering shaft by the plastic bushing. The steering wheel is attached to the steering shaft and needs to be grounded to allow the horn circuit to be completed. My horn does not work but the rest of the circuit is good. How does the steering wheel get grounded?

The steering shaft is grounded by a wire by the steering box that jumps over the rubber steering coupler. Check out my video on steering box service tips. This should guide you in the right direction. Thanks for watching be sure to subscribe if you haven’t already.

Not sure if my last reply got sent or not. I was saying that your video about the 1974 golden beetle steering column does not show any wire jumper where you suggest it should be. My 1977 superbeetle also doesn’t have a wire jumper there. I have read (although may not be accurate) that vw did away with that wire jumper sometimes in the 1970’s. I have also read that the plastic bushing you installed betweeen the upper bearing and the steering shaft was originally metal (but that may also be incorrect). Do you happen to have a picture of where that jumper is on the superbeetle close to my model year?
