I swear you are the ONLY person on UA-cam who doesn't shove the principle of protective styles down my throat. I can do twists, but it makes me look like a kid, and I don't like weaves/the process of getting braids, and in my experience weave broke my hair off.

It never worked for me and I found it boring! I went natural so my hair will be less work not more. Plus I don't want to think that much into hair. Thank you for watching!

Great video and so true. Wash n go is the natural style of all races. We are the only race that doesn't embrace this fact, but it's a result of history. I am however, seeing more AA women wear wash n go and it's beautiful.

I can't wait for the media to catch up and realize that all these Black women in media can still be beautiful with a natural texture! I think it is sooo special that you are standing up to "the standard of beauty" and be natural. I am on my own hair journey and trying to grow out my hair really long and healthy.

You are so right! Also we need to drink a lot of water too. The only thing sometimes that I think many of us forget is that a lot of us African Americans do have Caucasian and Native American heritage to which leads to even more variety to our hair. What I notice is men hardly seem to have problems with growth and retention, and they tend to keep it simple with care and products lol.

  • @HydraBarSalon

But if you can get a wash n go that look like your twist or better with your natural texture then why take the time to twist. Wash n go's only take about 15 mins the most if they are done correctly. You will get less shrinkage the more your hydrate your hair and wash n go's make you have to hydrate. It's a personal choice. I don't want to spend 2 hours doing my hair not even 30 mins. If this works for you great but I'm simply just sharing my knowledge of what's I know is true.

thank you for this! I love your channel. I have been natural for 10+ years and always thought I couldnt do a wash n go and I would spend HOURS setting my hair in braid outs. In the past few weeks I have been doing this and really enjoying it. I see a difference in my hair too

I don't really think about that but I make myself familiar with it so when other try to communicate their hair to me I understand it. I just focus on the hydration of the hair itself. Once you have hydration that's when you really start enjoying your hair.

You are so right! I went through this with my hair stylist. I was told that all I could do is braid outs- not twist outs like my daughter who has a finer more looser curl pattern. I didn't believe what I was hearing! I was told this because I have a coarser texture than she does, but my hair had been cut, and still had straight pieces from perm in my hair- I did not know my real texture! I vowed I would do my hair myself. I am glad I did! I love my curls! Education is key! Thanks!!!!!

  • @HydraBarSalon
    @HydraBarSalon  11 років тому +3

Actually I'm not wrong! Look you can believe what you want. But i've went through the changes of what you are talking about with stretching the hair. That doesn't work for me! My hair was dry my ends was always thinning out. I've studied hair beyond beauty school. Actually Kinky hair doesn't take longer to grow if it's hydrated it grows like everyone else hair. I have alot of clients with kinky hair. They no longer have growth issues.

Your videos are always so direct and to the point. I get frustrated with my curls because the shrinkage hides so much of my length. A lot of what you said in this vid is so true though. This may seem weird but everytime I hear you talk about wash n go's it makes me wanna wet my hair down and pull out the gel...lol! So glad to hear you're keeping busy with clients. Thanks for posting. :)

I totally agree with you! This is my 2nd time natural. The reason I didn't make it the 1st time was because I NEVER embraced my own texture. I kept hating that it didn't look how I thought it should look, so I wore twist outs 90% of the time. Until, I got tired of doing them and relaxed again. My hair got thinner and thinner and I am natural again. And this time, I LOVE MY CURLS, now that I know what to do to bring them out. She is right! Embrace your own hair and you will love being natural!

Omg! Thank you so much for this video! I have never heard anyone say this about natural hair before. I am 3c/4a and have been struggling to find a style that works for me (recently relying on braid outs which I find don't look natural enough). I actually looove my natural texture but can never figure out how to define it properly with a wash and go. The next time I'm in Florida I would loooove to book an appointment at your salon! YES! she knows what shes talking about. i do the exact same thing, its basically like the max hydration method. i wash my hair multiple times a week and i completely stopped over manipulating my hair with braids and twists. through this method my hair has grown several inches over the last few months and is now past my shoulders. i wash with CONDITIONER ONLY and shampoo once a month, my hair looks exactly like hers. i usually diffuse to dry it

you don't HAVE to do twist/bantu/braid outs and you dont HAVE to do washngosdo what works best for you. But actually, you're wrong on some points. For women, who are interested in retaining more length, stretching the hair helps you do that because it's expanding your curl. Thats why kinky hair seems like it takes longer to grow, is because all of our little curls get tangled together, so if you stretch your hair tangles are reduced.

TWA since July 2012 AND GROWING! This is a GOOD information & a honest, straight-foward talk about OUR hair. I'm doing the (half) curly girl method. I wasn't fully committed to wetting it daily but, we take a shower daily! I spent so much MONEY on my hair going from shop to shop (most ARE CLUELESS about natural hair and charged too much) and my weave stylist skipped down! :( I decided THAT'S IT I'll learn how to style it myself! YEAH! Most say relax it or think I'm lazy but I'm taking control!

AMEN to 9:07. I had my hair twisted for 3 wasted years. My hair grew but had I just gotten over the shrinkage issue and gone with the wash and go years ago, my hair would be much longer now. And I didn't KNOW until the end of 2013 how beautiful my curls were naturally.

Very good video! I like to see my "curls" and like to see my hair do what it wants and be a big ole bushy afro. I will say one thing, the braid outs will also help your hair come to a more uniform curl pattern too if they are small enough. After a few days your hair will "shrink back to it's pattern and it will show a defined pattern. I tried a wash and go with gel and I LOVE THEM. I have tiny ringlets and curls and I love them. It took a while to get over what others thought of Black hair too.

I'm in South Florida. With 4 hair it need lots of water and conditioner. You need to saturate the hair root to tip with a thick creamy cond. at least 3 times a week if you can. If keep this up you will start to see a difference but you must be consistent.

Gosh, i can really realte to what you have said. Your hair story is very much like my own Many salons just dont understand our hair. the more i do wash an go's the smoother the curl.
i wish we had stylists like you in the U.K its hard to find a stylist who understands all curl types her. i think w& g are low manipulation and you can bun a w&g to become a protective style.

I totally feel what that stylist was talking about when it comes to wetting your hair often. With my hair texture and having fine hair, water dries my hair out so much. I only put water on my hair 1x per week and just use leave-in conditioner every other day. My hair has never been this moisturized (defined curl pattern/less tangles) since I stopped wetting my hair every other day. I think that it is different with every individual. Water works for some but not others.

If it's completely damage you will have to cut eventually but try bentonite clay or amla they are detoxers. It might help. If not then you can pull or tuck roll the straight hairs back and wear the rest out until it grows enough where you are comfortable cutting it. But if it's truly heat damage not matter how you do it and if you want to wear it curly you are going to have to cut it eventually.

Your video have been very helpful, thanks so much. When we were born into this world, as baby we came out with curly smooth black hair and I, think that was our natural curly hair. it is just that, we didn't know how to take care of curly hair and as we grow up the curls do not get curly any more because we didn't know how to care for it.

Years ago, I went to a salon with many inches of unproperly cared for natural hair and told the stylist that I wanted hair like Tracee Ellis Ross. She replied, "Is yo' daddy white?", implying that curly hair was not an option for me. I ended up getting a relaxer. If I had only known then how to care for my natural hair then I could have been enjoying the naturally curly hair that I didn't realize I had.

Most people of color do have one it's just that some are harder to bring out because of the dryness of the hair. Once they start doing to things to get the hair hydrate the curl pattern will come out more. I see it all the time. Hydration involves actually getting more water in it. Staying away from water doesn't help those dry textures. That's why they get frustrated with their hair and give up sometimes.

  • @PrettyJones02
    @PrettyJones02 11 років тому

However I do understand when they say stretch the hair because curly hair has a harder time receiving oils from the scalp thus needing more moisture. Besides that twist and braid outs are to keep the hair protected from frequent manipulation as well as tangles and fairy knots so it all comes down to you just knowing what works best for you by researching and trial and error. Also know your purpose for going natural whether it be length retention or versatility but healthy hair is top priority

I am not a "wash & go" person because honestly I don't think my hair ever really looks "done" with a wash & go. It looks like I just rolled out of bed and shook my head - which I really don't mind sometimes to tell the truth. But sometimes I would like it to look more tamed. Learning how to make it look better if I had to do a wash and go is something I would look into. Thanks for this video. Blessings...

I know! That would be awesome. I do get curl definition, I just get too poofy. Elle from quest for the perfect curl embraces the poof, but I don't have her length and I just don't feel sexy. My twist out is pretty simple. 6 twists (20 minutes) and air dry overnight. It's hard to motivate and master something else to the point where I really like it.

For the most part but it might be a few other steps you might have to take. I would suggesting finding a local stylist that can help with the hair care side. With Transitioning the hair need to care so it good to have someone local to walk to through with what conditioning treatments you need. However I will be happy to help you here.

I totally agree... I'm in the shower ensuring my tresses is drenched at least 3 times a week. And here's the funny part -- I used to wash my hair at least 3 times a week when I was relaxed...so, been doing this for forever.

This all sounds well and good but I would like to see a visual example of what you're talking about on a 4c type hair. It seems all too easy for you to say this with your seeming looser curl pattern.. With all due respect.

If that's how your chose to think but I've transformed about of women who sounds like you in to wash n goer's You probably have alot of shrinkage because you hair is not hydrated. The more you hydrate your hair the shrinkage will minimize a little. Hydrating involves getting more water and conditioner on the hair more often but it's up to you if you want to make that change. I hope you step outside the box like me. It was the best decision I've made and I now I love my hair!

On my hair I can't do a wash and go. Usually because it shrinks 90 percent. So I can only wear a twa big chop. My hair is nearly armpit. So Not everyone can do wash and goes. Kinky hair tangles when not streched. So everybody is deferent thanks for the video Because it does work for looser curl patterns.

I never said it takes longer to grow. I said because of all our kinks & curls it can seem like it's taking a longer time to grow because they get entangled with each other. It's logical, & you can't argue with that point blank period. Watch Kimmaytube & Africanexports or even read the science of black hair. They ALL concur.

Twisting your hair is still stretching it. So when you take out your twists, it is going to be looser than your regular curl pattern. That's why it seems more managable & tangle free.

Well, I've been doing wash and gos for awhile in the hot and cold weather and not sick yet over it...I am usually going from the house to the car with the heat on to dry it. I even walked around outside for 30 mins or an hour in the cold and not sick...but everyone is different....but there are just TOOOOO many myths about OUR HAIR....try it and let me know if you get sick....I hope not because of a wash and go. Have a great day

Can you do a step by step video on how to get to wear your hair naturally curly as you do with your clients?

I have question regarding knots and tangles. Other women with natural hair say they wear twist or braids or other protective styles because of natural hair having more knots when worn loose. Do you have this same problem when you wear your hair loose constantly, or do you receive little to no knots and tangles?

Hello! I am so happy I found your channel. I'm new to loose natural hair and I'm tired of protective styles being shoved down my throat. I have 4a-c curl pattern and I don't like weave, and my hair is fine and I'm tired of twist outs etc. Do you think with my hair will thrive if I water and condition it several times a week? Would I still be able to retain length? Could I also use this technique in the winter? Thanks so much for the informative video, I almost got dreads again then I found your channel!!!!
