I agree. I am still trying to figure out why we are the only race of women that need to "protect" our hair from the elements, when our hair has survived for millions of years...

obdiane in case you aren't aware of black hair.every woman's hair isn't the same.my hair breaks in the winter if I leave it out despite all the oils.4c hair especially isn't to kind cold days or warm days that involve chlorine.that's how I grew my hair out.

@@cocochanel1945 I'm 4C as well - but I live in the South. Therefore our winters are much shorter and not as cold. Even so, I moisturize a little more often during the week because of it. If we were living in a sub-tropic climate like Africa, our hair would probably thrive better because they don't have 10 degrees winters over there. I get you though.

Thank you so much for this video! This needs to be said. I am old school from the 70's and we did not do any protective styling with our hair and it grew! Wash, condition, oil, kept moisturized and braided at night and it grew. Even used straightening combs and it grew and was healthy! Ladies embrace your beautiful natural hair and enjoy it! Don't stress over proctective styling. Just you do and it will grow and strong and healthy! During the winter you will just have to step up the moisture. I wash twice and week and my hair loves it and it grows! Love your hair!

I'm glad someone said it! I never believed in the "protective style" bs... Iv seen girls loose their hair and edges in protective styles... not saying it happens to everyone but I think it's an excuse for weave.

I agree with the wash n go being most beneficial for retaining length. The logic is that you are continually moisturizing and using no heat. All of these things encourage hair health which provide an environment for growth and length.

I just found this video. Agree with you 100%. I used to shave my head, I stopped a year and a half ago. My hair is growing fine, not fast but not slow either. I wear my hair out in wash & go's all the time. People won't leave me alone telling me I need to braid it using extensions, my best friend wants to install a weave, others tell me to wear a wig for it to grow faster and longer 🤦🏿‍♀️. They can't accept 4c hair in its natural state and it's sad. Funny enough, my hair is longer than some of those people telling me what to do with my hair. They won't take the wigs and weaves off.
Our hair needs care, dedication, hydration and love, that's it.

I see no point in growing my hair all the way down my back, and not getting to enjoy it. I might as well maintain a short cut. And like someone else said, CC people don't wear their hair in protective styles and their hair can be down their backs! Mind, I know they have different textures, but I still think the point stands.

I have been on and off the fence with protective styles. My 3 year anniversary is coming real soon. My hair is 11 inches long! That's it! I've trimmed at least twice a year and I wore protective styles 80% of the time. My hair broke off- dryer ends- But this is what I believed from watching naturals with long beautiful hair. Loose hair worked for me in the pass. So now I'm wearing my hair the way I want! I keep my scalp clean and my ends moisturized.. Thank you for this video.

All the points you touched upon are so true. I haven't done a protective style in over 2 years and my hair has retained more length than it did when I was 'protecting' it. I can't wait to do a video on this subject also. Thanks for sharing.

Good video. I have never believed in "protective" styling and I don't wear other hair integrated into my hair and have been able to maintain healthy heads of hair both relaxed and natural. I believe that nothing can take the place of a good care regimen, just like vitamins cannot substitute for a healthy diet. For me the key is keeping it simple and knowing that basic hair care is the same: shampoo, condition and regular maintenance cuts (for me, that's every 3 - 4 months b/c that's when it's grown out of the previous shape and has started knotting on the ends).

@SantanaVTaylor LOL...Yeah I will because I came into this business because I'm really passionate about hair. I really want to show black people that we really have beautiful hair no matter what texture and I also want to show people that your hair will grow. My goal is to make a difference in how we see our hair not to solely profit alone. The best tip to me in knowing that someone really love their hair. Thanks for commenting and watching :)

  • @HydraBarSalon

@TubeRobyn Since to love them...I would say do your wash n go the night before and blow dry it so in the morning it will be dry and ready to go. Also remember just because you have a wash in go doesn't mean you have wear it out like do some styles with it like and updo, half up half down, some hair down in the front and out in the back and etc. I hope this helps.

As many have already said, thank you so much for this video. You truly are a rare and much-needed voice. I've always suspected this, because twists and twist-outs really require a lot---serious detangling of each small section before twisting and SERIOUS detangling later on when the twists are undone. I hate detangling twist-outs. My hair seems to bind together and not want to come undone. I've never had a problem with wash and gos. Twists, however, are another story.

  • @feegio

I am soo happy for this video. I like my twist outs and braid outs just like any other natural beauty out here, but I don't always feel like spending so much time creating such styles. Many times, a wash n go is good enough for me. Trust me, I have no problems maintaining length or thickness!!

I'm glad I found someone who feels this way! I never could quite fathom twisting and braiding my hair to make it grow. It really does loc up when you twist it and it

  • @brownbabygirl

PS for me is more about achieving no manipulation. shampooing weekly, deep conditioning, combing etc all tend to break my hair. the best way for MY hair to grow is to leave it alone. sure the hair will grow but i find it hard to RETAIN the growth i need to keep it away esp in the winter. so for me it is low manipulation. if you dont need PS then you are lucky! one caveat re PS is the need to have it done properly ie no pulling and the way to achieve it is to do them yourself!

I so agree with you, I have been natural for almost 3 yrs, my mother for 4 yrs, she has hair almost to her butt, mine is barely past my ears, I say that to say. If my hair grows fine, if it doesn't fine. I went natural due to developing an allergy to relaxers. I love natural hair, but it doesn't have to be past my shoulders or to my butt or what have you. I just want healthy hair, to wear MY HAIR when I want to and even after 3 yrs find a routine that works, still searching for that LOL.....sorry about the rant just to say I agree with you. LOL

The last time did a protective style my husband said I looked like a dude. I hate the way I look with protective styles and I LOVE my curls. Plus my edges don't like being pulled at all. I appreciate your opinion in the video. Everyone's hair is so different but the 3 things I agreed with you are hydrate those ends, keep that scalp clean and trim as necessary. But some naturalistas need those protective styles because they play in their hair too much. I don't need protective styles but I'm one of the few black women with will power. I wouldn't discourage protective styles for everyone.

Though I'm relaxed I've found what you say to be true. Before I started my hair journey, I did wash and gos on my hair, and I never had a problem with growth. I started bunning and whatnot, and breakage city for my hair. Now I'm actually going back to my old regimen, and I'm already seeing my hair thrive. Thanks so much for this video (no matter how old) because I'm not alone! lol

Thank you for this! I've been protective styling consistently since my big chop in October of 2011. My hair has been growing; I can see that as my braids get loose and worn out. However, I haven't seen the sort of length retention that I would expect. I keep my hair in braids for 1 month at a time and don't do more than oil my scalp occasionally. Also, I have fairly thin hair so I'm starting to think the extensions are pulling at my hair too much. Once I take out my current weave, I'm definitely going to try just wearing my hair out with low manipulation styles, washing weekly, and see how that works.

Braids are the devil for fine hair. I had to stop with the braids. I had a piece at my temple come out when I took my two goddess braids down last year and haven't put a braid in since then. Been doing wash n gos and buns and that broken off piece is grown in and I have gained 2 inches of hair.

@ceellebee I think my title is good because it's true. I'm a stylist and I do alot of heads and their hair is going and I don't do protective styles on them. If that's what you choose to do that's fine...Do what you feel work but if someone chose to not do a protective style their hair will still grow long and healthy.

I have to say I agree with you on this topic....natural means being free to do whatever you want but knowing that one has to practice proper care as with anything...skin, nails etc. Be free everyone and take care of the whole not just a portion....to take care of your hair not the rest of the body will not result in much because it is all one package....keep it all taken care of and everything will be the way it should be. Thanks.

Wash and gos are Da bomb for some people, but for finer hair naturals it can cause excessive tangling, like my sister is a very fine 3b and wash and gos tear her hair out, but I'm a thick 3c/4a and they help my hair thrive.

@TriniCurlyGirl I'm actually retain more length with wash n gos than twistouts. I found myself cutting my ends alot with the twists because it made my length look thin and stringy and I hate that look. The wash n go's make my ends look thicker, moisturized and put together. I also did this video because I turned alot of my client who love twists into wash n goer's and they found that they like it better. I don't have anything against protective styles if they work for you that's great cont.

I like wearing my hair out and free. Nothing wrong with protective styles and I like the concept of 'a break style'..(good concept) My hair still grew 1/2 in a month. I cannot keep my hair covered too much b/c my hair was so tangled and crazy and I end up braking it off trying to detangle. I am with you my hair thrived better with the wash an go..it just wanted to be moisturized and left alone.

Do you not think that protective styles are useful if you live in a cold climate. I live in London it's freezing here now. If I wear my hair out it gets so dry. If it's up with ends protected it seems to retain moisture better which I think will help it retain length.

I saw the proof in my own hair growth. Some ppl can't do protective styling because of length (I was in that boat for the longest time and my hair grew so well wi/o protective styling, I just protect each night wi/ a satin scarf) it's actually an inconvenient/ impossible styling option for MOST who BC.

I moisturize with water by spritzing my ends and scalp with water then oils over top. And ur right about protective styles but at the same time if u detangle before u do ur protective style it wont give u a whole lot of tangles, like ur right wen u twist it aggravates ur ends becuz ur hair is already curly so wen i take out twists my hair gets some tangles, but I've had a lot of retention from protective styles I mainly do the crown and glory method, twists are my second ps.

    Hi,
I kind of agree with you. Those twists does cause the ends to tangle. No matter how careful I was and yes hydration is true .. lack of it for twists. Mainly because you don't want them shrinking up. Because I can't imagine a race of people thatn cannot hold up to weather. This is what protective styling will make you think.

  • @tiffanyfeliciano4885
    @tiffanyfeliciano4885 8 років тому +5

I think it depends on the person and their hair. for example, my hair doesn't do well in wash n go's or twist outs or braids outs etc in times of extreme heat and extreme cold. I dont use protective styles for growth I use them for protection. when it's really cold or really hot my hair can be dry and brittle regardless of how much I moisturize and seal and co wash etc...and when it's like that I get more breakage. so to avoid that I usually wear protective styles during the hottest months where I live June July and part of August and in the coldest months end of November, December and January. I do get growth and retain length but I don't do it for that reason I do it because like I said, my hair goes haywire in certain weather conditions lol

@CynthiaLovely85 Try rinsing out your conditioner in cold water and using a leave-in of ph 4.0-5.5. You can also try silicone-based serums that are advertized for frixxy hair but be careful with silicones because they block moisture from penetrating into your hair.

I totally agree. Protective styles can be beautiful and occasionally might give hair a rest. But I love having my hair out and found that when I use a moisturizing shampoo, moisture it within an inch of its life daily or every other day giving special attention to the ends, and detangle daily or every other day it thrives. The key is to be gentle and patient to avoid breakage.

I started out doin protective styles & low-manipulation styles b/c that's all I had found in the beginning of my "research". Nightly Flat twistouts pulled my hair straight b/c I overmoisturized, then twists ravaged my ends & were hard to detangle afterwards. WNG's ARE VERY low-manipulation (esp. if I braid my roots first) and high moisture for me b/c I detangle once a month. Sometimes if I go a little longer w/out detangling I get great curl definition and length retention! Happy growing!

Thank you so much for this! On my natural hair journey and am new to this. Anyway i tried the twists and i swear i feel like my hair was laughing at me. Ty' unvel in less than a day, i found i was re doing the twists every night, it took so long and i got frustrated. I bought curly girl method book, tried the wash and go and fell in love with my hair. Now i deep condition every time i wash, do my wash and go and mist my hair every night

Great information! Just found your channel. Gonna stop protective styling but how do I sleep with it? Satin/silk bonnet? Really enjoyed your personality!

this video was very helpful to me!! My hair is like yours and everything that you said about protective styles happens to my hair too. I perfer wash and gos too!! I'm glad to hear you say this. I have been wondering if that's something that you have to do!!

I totally agree with you. I know is been years since you posted this but I hardly hear anyone saying you don't have to cut your hair. When I see videos of people wearing a twist out for an entire week i wonder how they keep their hair moisturized without water? I wet my hair everyday and my ends are doing just fine. I have also colored it 4 times this year. No breakage no knots. I also don't have excessive shedding. I also agree with the detangling thing. I cant leave all the detangling for wash day. My hair will never forgive me.

I where my hair out all the time. I hate wearing wigs and my fiance hates them on me too. lol. I look a hot mess in 2 strand twists b/c my twists never look full like everyone elses. I do twistouts and braidouts b/c it gives me big hair The braids and twists only stay in over night not for days or weeks. For me combing once and week and wearing satin on my hair before bed is what helps me retain length. Wash n goes are cool too. I agree you don't have to do protective styles for growth.

This really helped me, I wear protective styles a lot, way too much, but my hair is growing but slower than I am use too, I been natural for almost three years I feel my hair should be much longer, I will try this wash n go, you know why, cause my hair has a mind of its own, my hair is curling without my help, I have single box braids in my hair right now and the ends are so curly, even as I was braiding it once I let the braid go it curled, so when I take this out I will start wearing my hair

@Godschild4evaful Hi! I think it's a method that help some retain length I just wanted people to know that it's not absolutely necessary by using myself as an example. Thanks for your comment :)

Hi I am so glad u had this real talk about protective styles. Now I do like to have them, but I don't want to feel like that's the only way for me to grow my hair. Like u said it makes more sense to do wash n go for hydration daily. By the way ur hair is gorgeous. Thanks a lot. Check my channel out and give me some pointers if u like. Be blessed

I've never been a fan of protective styling where my hair is all or mostly tucked away. I prefer to wear it out or pulled back in a ponytail when working out.
I neva did a bc. I transitioned for a year. As of July 2010 all my relaxer had grown out or been trimmed away so I havent been completely relaxer free for that long. Cant wait to see what my hair will be/look like after two years.
I am so tired of these layers I have though :( Uggh~

@BrownFaceTV lol...yeah I'm in California it doesn't get as cold out here but I know what you are talking about. I'm from North Carolina. If I was in NC I will probably wear it straight or in some twists too. I'm still doing wash n go's but I usually do them at night and they will last as long as a need them to.

  • @HydraBarSalon
    @HydraBarSalon  13 років тому

@spimdlh I never said protective styles are useless but I'm just saying that aren't necessary. I don't do protective styles and my hair has grown tremendously. I personally seen the different between me doing protective styles and wash n go's. I've gotten a lot more growth out of wash n gos and it's not just growth...because I put water on my hair more often its causes my hair to be more hydrated therefore easier to manage.

@yumyum215 Everybody's hair is different and I don't claim to know it all but what I try to do is counteract other people who insist that protective styling is the way to go. This video was not meant for people to do what I say or any of my videos if you really watch them...it's meant to show that others don't have to do protective styles to achieve hair growth...ok

@TriniCurlyGirl No it's not insane you can wear any style you want...lol I don't think I asked that and if I did it was hypothetical. It don't really help you retain length and that's a fact but for some people it seems to make it easier for them to work with and I'm all for what make things easier for you. My point of this video is for people who don't like twist out like myself because there are people where twists works against them. You can retain length with wash n go's too. cont.

@mese1020 I don't change my regimen for winter really. The only thing I might do different is maybe start doing some rollersets but I still do my wash n go's. I will probably just make sure my hair is moisturize more that's all. I'm also in California so they don't have a really winter here but I'm originally from N.C. so I remember how cold it could get. If I was back there I would probably just wear my hair straight more in the winter and still to the wng but at night

@MiszDimplez6209 You can get them back. What you need to do now is to start wearing your hair as if it's already all natural and I'm speaking from experience because I did the same thing and my curl came back. It's took a few months like 2 or 3 but they came back in. I also urge you to do a benotonite clay treatment it helps restore hair back to it original state. I hope this helped.

I don't like protective styles either. Never did it. Wash n-gos's are for me, You can grow hair without protective styles. Heat is the killer for hair.

@naturaluv85 Not always because I have plenty of clients that have very kinky hair and I have turned them into wash n go believers. They won't even do a twist out and they have great hair growth. If you choose to do twists that's fine nothing wrong with it do what makes you happy but you don't absolutely have to do them.

Thanks for this video. I've been wanting to do protective styles, but I don't like the way they look on me. I tried mini twists and ended up with so much shedding it really defeated the purpose. My hair doesn't have a lot of curl pattern and my twists just don't last that long.
