Mikko, this is the first video of yours I ever saw, and it's still one of my favorites. I like the way you are seeking strange, exotic sounds and creating new tonalities. You are not afraid to create music which is "outside" the conservative boundaries of 18th century music theory. I'm marching bravely with you into the twenty-first century's music!
I'm just getting into Slonimsky. You had the clearest explanation of it .... diving the octave into equal parts like tritone, major thirds, minor thirds, tones, and semitones. This is where Holdsworth, Shawn Lane, etc. got ideas.
Just bought the book and been trying to make sense of it. Then happened upon this vid. NOW I'm beginning to get it. Thanks Mikko for taking the theory and making it sing.
Hi Mikko. That was such a brilliant summary of the Slonimski book and the augmented sound, which is my favourite. This really helps me get straight into practicing stuff which I find useful and gives me ideas to make further discoveries. I'm applying it to Chapman stick which is my second instrument, so you can imagine what fun I'm having with that. Cheers!
Excellent video! I obtained the Slonimski book a few years ago but I didn't jump into it, so the book collected dust. I recently dug it out and I'm now starting to use it, thanks for making this video. So true that how this book really opens up the ears...Cool stuff
Hey Maestro Mikko, just wanted to thank you again, for another awesome and easy to grasp instructional. Hopefully, you can cover some David Liebman or George Garzone Concepts in the future, since you've presented tiptop material for Bergonzi's in the past? Thanks in advance and more power.
The augmented scale is a sound. You can create lot's of different chords with the augmented scale. Maj7 Maj7#5 and also minor chords as well. Poly chords even. The most common application would be Maj7#5 I guess. Or even Maj7#9 😎
@@HarmoChopin I'm not sure about standards. You would have to look at more modern Jazz compositions. Miles used this sound. Oliver Nelson plays a straight up augmented scale lick in his solo on Stolen Moments. I think there is another tune on that album The Blues and the Abstract Truth that uses the scale. You can hear it in John Taylors tune Ambleside. Giant Steps harmonic movement is based on this scale. there is a Wikipedia article about it where you can find examples in contemporary music

This method of teaching, is by far, the easiest to follow and absorb.
More power to you Mikko!
Thank you 😎
What a great explanation, "a sound". It's perfect.
Good choice of the book to review. Thanks for putting this video together! Keep on rocking

cool! Yeah the chapman stick would open up new dimensions for sure :)
Jesus Christ what a FANTASTIC recorded tone! WOW DUDE! Whats your secret? I am not kidding this is the BEST recorded tone I have EVER heard online!
😮😮😮 Thanks maestro! I can't remember but I think it's just the sound from the guitar and amp recorded through my Samsung phone. Plus a delay pedal.
I resent acoustic guitars but your guitar's tone here does sound terrific.
Most UA-cam videos are so poorly prepared that I quit watching them after just a few minutes. Not this one. Kudos, Sir.
Thank you that is the best compliment. I always feel that I should prepare better. Sometimes the best videos happen when I just press rec and go :D
Great stuff, I'd heard of the book but never see it demonstrated, thanks.

Nice vibe! They don't have a Thesaurus of vibe but it makes all the difference.
Right, but on what chords can you play these strange scales?

Thanks, @@Mikkokosmos.
Where can I see examples of standard tunes improvised with this scale?
