the first time I heard the beans jingle was in Stephen king's dark tower audiobook and they said musical fruit and I just learned recently that people also said magical. but I do like magical more.
Yeah, and there are things you can also consume to reduce flatulence. Not exactly sure why beans make people fart. Probably fiber, which is good. It's mainly because many people eat processed foods that remove fiber. Once your body gets used to it, it doesn't have any unusual problems.
Oh, yeah. After going vegan last year and cutting out all dairy, hardly any farting, and eating more beans than I've ever have in my whole life. Beans are so yummy.
Even the lactose free? Of course if you are lactose intolerant and going at it with full lactose dairy you'd get issues but lactose free dairy shouldn't make you gassy?
I'm team beans all the way. They're so versatile and healthy! And there are so many legume types. I used to hate them, but I'm a complete convert now. 🍴😋
Thanks for this it cracked me up. The average person farts about 20 times a day about 1/2 a liter. Farts are a normal part of living and digesting. There are so many different foods that can cause farts. Beans are not the only one. As someone who is a bean eater about 1 1/2 cups a day I don’t think beans cause me more farting but there are days where I fart more and that has to do with other things that I am eating since beans are a constant. I am so frustrated with so many restaurants that don’t offer beans as a side. There have been so many waiters that have laughed at me for asking if they have any beans to add to a salad for example. I think that people dislike beans because they do make people feel uncomfortable with bloating but only because they are a reflection of the poor state of their microbiome. It takes a healthy microbiome to digest many fiberous foods and you need to eat those foods on the regular to have the means to digest them more easily. I would like to see the bean lobby start getting subsidies and preferential treatment. Bulk organic dried beans are the way to go.
I appreciated your statistic! And yes, flatulence is a sign of healthy digestion, but a vegan farts once and no one ever forgets it! & I agree, restaurants having beans on hand for hungry vegans should be a no-brainer.
I absolutely love beans. The possibilities are endless with stews, patties, salads, dips. It makes me sad that so many people miss out on this variety of flavours and textures besides all the health benefits. As a german I wanted to at least note that lentils are more common in southern germany and eaten by many people from time to time...
Yes; their versatility is one of their best attributes! I didn't know that about lentils and didn't mean to throw Germany under the bus; in all fairness I also threw my two heritages (Irish and French) under the bus 😅 I just don't think of those cultures as being as legume-heavy as others like South American cultures, for example.
The thing people miss is that the whole "beans make you fart" is the experience of someone who doesn't usually eat beans eating beans. I think when people start eating beans their digestive systems takes time to adapt to it, but once it has, it's not much different from before (albeit healthier). The same could be said of someone who doesn't consume animal products and (god forbid) starts doing so, I'd imagine their digestive system would go through the same process. Additionally, why don't people talk about milk? It's even worse than beans for giving bad gas but isn't nearly talked about as much in that way as beans are.
Yeah absolutely its true. The benefits of beans are far superior than most any food out there. It takes time to adjust and being gassy is not necessarily a sign of any health issues
Yessss Bean farts: "OMG this must be the most unhealthy food ever, I must never eat it again!" Dairy farts: "oops, hehe, I'll be on the toilet all night but idc I love it so much you'll never get me to stop! 🤪"

One way to make people eat beans is to make them more convenient and snackable. I always have plenty of roasted crispy chickpeas that I buy from a local Indian market. My favorite are simply roasted chickpeas, turmeric, and salt. I like to eat them with some pepper. They make a great snack as well as a way to add some protein to side dishes when I have to make up a meal from side dishes. When traveling I like to stop at a Wendy's and buy a plain baked potato. Had enough ketchup and roasted chickpeas and you have a meal that is really tasty and satisfying. It also happens to be really good for you.
Another legume which can be turned into a snack is roasted peas. The Japanese have been eating roasted wasabi peas for a long time. I like to buy plain roasted peas from my favorite Indian market and just add some hot sauce. I think most people would agree that peas are always a welcome addition to a meal. As long as they're not canned peas. Those are terrible! I prefer frozen peas myself.
Great hacks! I used to LOVE wasabi peas and you've reminded me I should get some to snack on! I have sometimes found the dried bean snacks I've bought in stores to be a bit too dry to the point I don't enjoy eating them. I do love lupini beans as snacks; the company Brami makes delicious (although pricey) snack packs.
@@TotallyForkable the dried beans snacks like crispy chickpeas are very dry but I chase them with a beverage like a fruit smoothie. So much healthier than chips! Peanuts are a favorite salty snack which are thought of as nuts, but are actually legumes like chickpeas.
@@TotallyForkable the crispy chickpeas I buy from the Indian market are very economical. I buy a huge tub full every time I shop there. The cost per serving is tiny. The roasted peas are even cheaper

Beans don’t make me gassy, other things can but not beans. I truly don’t understand the reputation. Like everything, your body needs to adapt. I eat them every day, no gas. The few times I do (everyone passes gas), they don’t even smell. I know cuz my partner would tell me right away if it does. That didn’t use to be the case, before going vegan my farts smelled terribly. My situation vastly improved.
I don't get farting being a bean thing. I think cheese should hold the title. I had hummus, crackers and cumber at a pizza party once. Everyone started a fart competition to see how loud and rank they could be when it became apparent they were all having issues. Except for me. A week later, one of the guys mentioned he didn't like beans, they made him gassy. Seriously?! 😳 I think it's just a convenient excuse.
Great job Marielle! A lot of time and research went into this. You nailed it!😊 I think that every vegan should try making their own homemade slow baked beans in the oven. Very easy to do. Oh!...and so true about those NYT article limits. 🙄 I just gave up on it..
That sounds really delicious!! I made baked beans a few summers ago and they were so good. However, I don't think I've ever cooked them from dry to cooked in the oven!
Super easy. Just soak the dry beans overnight for about 8 hours. Simmer your ingredients to be added in a pan ( plenty of recipes to choose from), simmer the soaked beans for an hour, add then add them to the mixed sauce and bake in oven at 215F for 10 hrs on lower rack. A lot less work than you might think..
I recently placed my first order for Rancho Gordo beans. The unfortunante timing of the Labor Day weekend, means that my fancy beans will be delayed for a few days. I am so looking forward to testing the RG beans as compared with the lowly grocery store dried beans which have been a staple in my household for years.
Oh nooo. You'll have to let me know what you think! To be honest I never buy dried beans in the grocery store; always canned, so I don't have much frame of reference but the RG beans are delicious and texturally so satisfying!
I think part of the problem with the perception of beans in the U.S. is that most people buy the beans that come precooked in cans, which, in my opinion, are far inferior in terms of taste and texture to beans cooked from scratch. Even so, I rarely go a week without eating beans straight from a can as a mid afternoon snack.
They are certainly inferior although admittedly that's mostly what I buy. Since discovering Rancho Gordo I have become more of a dried bean convert and it really makes a difference! I think the popularity of Instant Pots has helped more people cook/eat beans.
I did not know this! In fairness I'm basing it on my Massachusetts Irish-Catholic family, who, aside from green peas with a roast beef dinner, I think have eaten pulses enough times in their lives to count on one hand 😂
When people talk shit about my bean filled meals I clap back by saying "if beans make you fart that much your diet must really suck" cuz it's sorta true
Mexican or Cuban style rice and beans are delicious and satisfying! My favorite is black beans. Add guacamole to make them even better. I also like refried bean tacos. Quick, easy, and delicious! I use Trader Joe's corn tortillas. Just add salsa.
@@TotallyForkable if you haven't gone to Chipotle's and ordered a veggie burrito or a veggie bowl you'll be glad to discover that the guacamole is free as long as you don't ask for sofritas. I never do because the beans in the veggie burrito and veggie bowl give you all the protein you need.
Rancho Gordo black or pinto beans cooked with orange and bay leaf! Don’t get me started on the delicious and versatile soy bean. Toot away! It beats killing so many animals unnecessarily and tastes amazing.❤
Once your body gets used to eating beans on a regular basis, you no longer produce excess gas. Also, why do people act like vegans invented eating beans? They've been a staple of traditional diets around the world for thousands of years.
I'm not a vegan/vegetarian, but I do eat a vegetarian soup every day that has a bunch of vegetables and beans in it as a way of getting in my veggies for the day. It's really good! I had bariatric surgery last year, so having a way to get in my veggies when I'm concerned about how to get in enough protein for the day is very nice.
It was always “Magical” for me growing up. You should look at Tom Scott’s video on ‘Jingle Bells Batman smells’ if you haven’t seen it already, where he breaks down the different versions of the rhyme and who uses them. It’s really interesting!
Haha, never heard the musical version. Team magical here. Honestly, though I eat beans every day, often times multiple times a day. After the first couple of weeks of upping fiber, your body doesn't produce nearly as much gas. Maybe more than someone who eats 0 fiber, but it's pretty minimal.
Yes! I think, since we live in a society of extremes, people will "try veganism" for 2 weeks/1 month max and go from 0 to 100. They are shocked when their body doesn't immediately love it and give up, saying it "didn't agree with them."
Good video thanks. Absolutely Legumes are one of the foods most associated with longevity. People who follow low carb diets avoid many vegetables and legumes because they can make you bloated and gassy and they tend to associate this with being bad. But actually the fiber and nutrition in beans is simply amazing, yes they are harder to digest but after a while they have many benefits from lowering blood sugar, improving blood pressure and many other things. Not having any gas doesn't mean your healthy, as you are just avoiding all foods that have bacteria that ferment in the process of digestion, and we all know the benefits of fermented foods. Eat your beans and leave the animals alone!
I honestly believe - if they go with the jar idea - it better be the most special looking of beans around - like the 'San Bernardo Blue' Bean (maybe have some musical jingle - of 'blue beans for blue jeans' or something with a jar of blue beans next to blue jeans! Hey - jeans are vegan from what I know), or some pickled cranberry beans - these would look beautiful. I could even have them as decoration - so that I don't eat it until I run out of food with everything else. However, if I see pinto beans in a jar - don't expect me to eat that anytime soon - that is better relegated for a dry bag or can.
As a kid I didn't eat much fiber, no legumes at all, yet girls in ELEMENTARY SCHOOL wrote in their burn book that I farted a lot 💀. I don't notice much difference in gas now that I'm vegan but maybe I'm used to it by now! Lol For meat eaters, I would emphasize beans' affordability and convenience. I hear a lot of people say that eating healthily is too expensive so they don't even try. (Obviously beans are not even on their radar.) Imo beans don't taste that great, but they are very inoffensive, and easy to use in many dishes. Perhaps we should target beans towards picky eaters, since they tend to like starchy foods.
Ha ha, there were several verbal and presentation gems scattered throughout this video. Great content, kudos to you! For whatever little it's worth, even before I started consuming beans on a daily basis, I can't really say beans ever made me gassy. Which makes me wonder how much this is actually a thing or is it mostly just a jokey tradition to talk about beans in this way. 🤔
On August 24 or this year, the New York TImes published a Guest Essay on the Opinion pages titled _Trump Can Win on Character._ The nation can do just fine without a subscription to that ridiculous outlet.
@@TotallyForkable kelp. it's often an ingredient in canned organic beans. it's mentioned in some cookbooks, too. i forget if this was in your video but alot of cultures have things they've found are beneficial to cook with beans, asafoetida in India, epazote in Mexico, oregano in Greece and so on.
if we use other m words - maybe mystical and mythical work? I think I'm team mythical - because the gladiators ate beans for strength, and there's james and the giant beanstalk. So I want to hear about the strength of beans that lead to such mind-warping stories - it would be so amazing - who wouldn't want to be a part of it? I do feel advertising beans will fall upon wording. People love hearing about the 'beanbow' - because beans come in a rainbow of colors. There's beans for every color, occasion, and theme - that you can call them beautiful beans. If we just change our rhetoric and tune around beans - then we might have something going here! I think also when PCRM had the person from the marshall islands say that beans taste like ice cream - I'd like to know which bean they're talking about - so that I can make bean ice cream for people - I'm guessing it's the cannellini beans - they're like ice cream - color, texture, and maybe some of the taste? Maybe it's navy beans? I don't know. I mean they do make ice cream from adzuki - so maybe that is a possibility too? eat your heart out edibles does have a recipe for bean nice cream - of white beans as the base, with banana, sweetener (I'd add in some white fruit - mulberries, yellow raisins (no sulfites though), peaches, etc. - pineapple might be too harsh, but maybe? - unless I want it to stand out - like cinnamon raisin - regular raisins and cinnamon then), vanilla bean, nut milk (I prefer pili for this). Not bad.
I guess I'm old school. I grew up on team "Beans, Beans, they're good for your heart...." 😉 In all seriousness though, I eat copious amounts of beans and will do so for the rest of my life.
@@TotallyForkable And the WHO has identified processed meats as a Group 1 carcinogen, BUT we're talking about meat eaters here aren't we? You've got to prime the bean eating pump somehow babe. Just a spoonful of pork fat makes the beans go down.

instead of just a jar - which could make you ajar from the blandness - how about marketing it as fancy? Like take the fanciest or adventurous of bean names - like Borlotti, Appaloosa, or instead of scarlet runner - call them volcano beans? Something will eventually work if people put it to the test.
it wasn't the gas, it was the runs that put me off :-/ i made it 6 weeks vegetarian this year and was actually liking the food i was making and eating, but the way it was coming out the other end was not doable.
Hmm that's interesting! I don't associate high fiber diets with loose stools. Since you said vegetarian, were you eating more dairy or eggs than usual? As above commenter said, tapering slowly/ramping up could definitely be helpful to accommodate the higher fiber intake.
Also, make sure that you're not allergic or intolerant to the foods you eat. I found out I have celiacs, but before that I assumed that my vegan diet was to blame for my problems. I loved seitan, but sadly it doesn't love me back. Good luck!
its insane to me that some people look at a bean or pepper or something and think "oh my god, too exotic, its white bread and chicken for me, thanks." like... what planet are you from? lol my bf had only ever had baked beans until we started eating together, and he thought they were chili??? from there he'd also decided he didn't like any kind of bean... i'm like.... literally eat these refried beans, you insane person... and now he likes beans, just not baked beans... which his family still thinks are chili lmao

Soaking beans helps alot in making beans less gassy and just generally taste better. We always have a pot of beans in the slow cooker at our house.
I'm learning from this comment section that I really need a slow cooker!
Excuse me, the Irish have always been big into their pulses! It’s not that long since few of us could afford meat.
I honestly never thought of tubas that way before. 😅
😂🤣 you will now!
Mexican or Cuban style rice and beans are delicious and satisfying! My favorite is black beans. Add guacamole to make them even better.
I also like refried bean tacos. Quick, easy, and delicious! I use Trader Joe's corn tortillas. Just add salsa.
Sounds delicious!!
I eat 200-225 grams of beans/lentils every day (that is dry/pre-cooked weight btw). 65cm waist at 6ft 30yo male.
Yes, since I went veggie I pop beanos like tic tacs.
😂 Hopefully your body will adjust!
Rancho Gordo black or pinto beans cooked with orange and bay leaf! Don’t get me started on the delicious and versatile soy bean. Toot away! It beats killing so many animals unnecessarily and tastes amazing.❤
Toot toooooot!! 🎺 Never considered adding orange in with them--very interesting!
Better than being perpetually constipated
💯
Once your body gets used to eating beans on a regular basis, you no longer produce excess gas.
Also, why do people act like vegans invented eating beans? They've been a staple of traditional diets around the world for thousands of years.
💯 just another cover for vegan hate.
I will be team magical for you - I think you will have magical experiences of better health whenever you or anyone eats beans.
Baby steps, and a pressure cooker.

Soups are nutritional life hacks!
Beans, beans, they're good for your heart. The mire ya eat, the more...
❤️🫘💨
You are doing amazing work 🫘🫘🫘
It was always “Magical” for me growing up. You should look at Tom Scott’s video on ‘Jingle Bells Batman smells’ if you haven’t seen it already, where he breaks down the different versions of the rhyme and who uses them. It’s really interesting!
That's awesome! It's interesting how universal these little little jingles are.

I am too...allegedly...
Haha holly fuck that bit at 3:17 about animal suffering was too real. I was literally just thinking that, nailed it! too funny.
Beans never make me fart. Depends on your gut microbiome I guess. Or maybe you didn't cook them enough.
same here. I guess the body needs to get used to them and, since I've always eaten beans, I never had any trouble in that respect. Oh, well.
Exactly!
BIG BEAN ENERGY!!!! 💥💥

I ❤ beans of all kinds. Kidney, navy, canellini etc.
There are sooo many different kinds!
Sigma Grind Set Bean
Okay I never knew there was a phrase for what I was describing. It's perfect 😂
butter beans, butter beans, good for your heart
the more you eat, the more you fart
Ohh your jingle name checked a specific type of bean?!
I’m team “ good for your heart” The “toot” word is child’s play.
I’m enjoying satirically forkable you.
🤣
Absolutely!! People are doing themselves and their health such a disservice 😕
soaking beans for 24 hours or there about greatly reduces the amount of tuba and horn in your concerto.
🙏🏻🌱
True, some beans are more gorgeous than others!
Love them!

As a kid I didn't eat much fiber, no legumes at all, yet girls in ELEMENTARY SCHOOL wrote in their burn book that I farted a lot 💀. I don't notice much difference in gas now that I'm vegan but maybe I'm used to it by now! Lol
For meat eaters, I would emphasize beans' affordability and convenience.
All great ideas! Also, dying at the girls in your elementary school having a burn book 📗☠️ I didn't know that was a real life thing!! 😭
If you eat beans regularly and don't eat processed food that destroys your digestive system, flatulence will not be a problem.
💯
I think I heard wonderful fruit, but the good for your heart jingle was more popular
Wonderful--that's a new one!

So glad you enjoyed it!
Great video thanks
So glad you enjoyed it!
Very entertaining! I feel you're frustrations, haha.
So glad you enjoyed, and can relate!!
That's what I'm saying! Like that song really did leave an indelible mark 😂 Thanks for the kind words; so glad you enjoyed the video!
I'm vegan. I eat beans everyday with zero 🚶💨
Love that! 🫘
Beans are my favorite food. Seriously who doesnt like chili???
I'm so glad we're headed into soup season 🥹🫘
On August 24 or this year, the New York TImes published a Guest Essay on the Opinion pages titled _Trump Can Win on Character._ The nation can do just fine without a subscription to that ridiculous outlet.
...the hell?! 🤦🏻♀️
Musical
I eat beans 3x a day, big fan, cooking them with kombu and sage, and having happy gut bacteria has largely eliminated the music
Ohhh what is kombu?! This sounds intriguing.
Not bad.
I could see cannellinis lending themselves nicely to a creamy, sweet dessert!
team magical FTW
🪄✨
Love my beans! ❤💚
Same!
I’ll nibble…”musical.”
🎶🎺
I guess I'm old school. I grew up on team "Beans, Beans, they're good for your heart...." 😉
In all seriousness though, I eat copious amounts of beans and will do so for the rest of my life.
Same! I want to try all the beans!
_"How to Make a Nation of Meat Eaters Crave the Humble Bean?"_
Cooking them beans with smoked ham hocks, onion and jalapeños would do the trick.
Smokey flavor: comes from plants
Onion: plant
Jalapeño: plant
...why do we need the ham, exactly?
@@TotallyForkable And the WHO has identified processed meats as a Group 1 carcinogen, BUT we're talking about meat eaters here aren't we? You've got to prime the bean eating pump somehow babe. Just a spoonful of pork fat makes the beans go down.
@@TotallyForkable And the WHO has identified processed meats as a Group 1 carcinogen, BUT we're talking about meat eaters, aren’t we? IF one can prime the bean eating pump with a spoonful of pork fat to entice someone who would otherwise not eat beans, would that not represent an improvement to their diets?
instead of just a jar - which could make you ajar from the blandness - how about marketing it as fancy? Like take the fanciest or adventurous of bean names - like Borlotti, Appaloosa, or instead of scarlet runner - call them volcano beans? Something will eventually work if people put it to the test.
I think Rancho Gordo has been able to market them as fancy.
it wasn't the gas, it was the runs that put me off :-/ i made it 6 weeks vegetarian this year and was actually liking the food i was making and eating, but the way it was coming out the other end was not doable.
Try eating less fiber and building up (go for tofu or seitan or mock meats for protein half the time and slowly add until you are good)
Hmm that's interesting!
Good luck!
@@wallflower6942 i'm already gluten free and predisposed to loose stools unfortunately. low fiber is the only thing that seems to help
Very funny!
Thank you!
Great video! Beans are amazing!
Thank you! They really are 😊
Reminds me of that one Portlandia episode where they go to a vegan restaurant.
You just reminded me; I almost included a clip of that in this video and forgot to! 😂
its insane to me that some people look at a bean or pepper or something and think "oh my god, too exotic, its white bread and chicken for me, thanks." like... what planet are you from? lol my bf had only ever had baked beans until we started eating together, and he thought they were chili??? from there he'd also decided he didn't like any kind of bean... i'm like.... literally eat these refried beans, you insane person... and now he likes beans, just not baked beans... which his family still thinks are chili lmao
OMG! Yes people love beige food 😑
