At 6 minutes Lex makes an important point. David Goggins is the mind's will over the body's matter. In the end, he testifies himself, that matter has more sense. Still, David Goggins proves that will, at least the part that leverages shame and hatred for surrender to pain to overcome yourself and achieve the objective based on its ultimate value, is a fact.
So there is a curve, and along its arc, we have to learn where the mind's will has lost its ability to be an ally, and where the mind's knowledge does its other job of protecting the body's matter. Mind over matter. The mind's will to overcome matter's weakness, and mind's knowledge to overcome matter's destruction.
At 9:40 - Andre says the mind's neural circuitry is not set up for one action (overcome), but from many (protect, know, apply, improve, diversify, metric and measure, and so on). In David's case as we know form his story, he made it to hell week 3 times, and finally through it with serious injuries. He achieved his goal to overcome and completely die his least self and resurrect his best self.
But David went too far along the arc when he destroyed his feet (which can heal) and damaged his kidneys (which can not, and without which we can not live) on an ultra marathon. Perhaps we can bisect the brain chemistry and circuitry (including in David's case, memory of least self) that make up will, and examine that which foster emotions , and say that pride comes before the fall.
Is it governance? Foreknowledge? Virtue(s)? What offers the best chance for our entire complex and (made) capable minds to shepherd us along the arc until we reach the angle of our best self?

None of this stuff makes a difference. Sorry to burst your bubble. Unless you believe that God will reward you for something that you have decided is good this is just...... exercise. @@TheSubpremeState I would think that if there was an afterlife, then the lives we lived would not be perceived as meaningless at all. Our lives are essentially stories, and stories are deemed meaningful to us, even if the ending has already been determined beforehand. Btw I'm not trying to argue, I was just curious why you thought that.

In 2015 I completed Spartan Beast it took me 9 hours to complete. Hardest physical activity for me ever wanted to quit but didn’t.2018 I had a widow maker heart attack. I survived the heart attack by using the skills learned from the Spartan beast. I focused on ten yards at a time when I was at my physical breaking point. @Michael Cueva Natural selection works on selecting stuff on ourself that are working better to adapt to the environnement.
For example the color of an animal that make it blend more with nature and less sujectible to be eaten or to be seen by it's prey, so it's not the fittest that is being selected but the one who's genetic is the best for the environnement.
Being well adapted or evolving well in society is different than being well adapted to nature if society collapse the one that do well in society might not be the one that survive.

One special day where I was feeling good and energetic I actually ran a half-marathon 21k (22 with some walking afterwards). It is still my longest run in terms of time (~2h15min) and distance. But the lifting, the daily calisthenics and the daily running eventually caught up to me and I stopped it around 45 days. I'm thinking about trying it again soon.

You don’t have to buy into the “no pain no gain” philosophy, for many this is a road block if you don’t have the time and energy for a full on workout.
I prefer the “use it or lose it” philosophy, most people would be surprised at the benefits you get from just 1-2 sets every day, and not even necessarily to failure.
The body seems to be like a pair of pliers, they’ll rust up and cease if left sitting for long, but everyday minimal use and they never will.

  • @jeremychapman5806

This is unfair, David Goggins has a clearer philosophy than 99% of people. One centred in the contrast between mind and matter, and how extreme self-denial can literally open up new worlds of perception and value to us, which are only denied in normal life by our weaknesses. He is actually proposing and practicing the same ideas that have characterised virtually all religions throughout the ages, he just doesn't articulate them in terms which, for Lex, would qualify him as a philosopher.

    • @michaelaerulius9238

David Goggins is the type of bad ass that only those who have really truly experienced extreme situations and broken themselves in the process really can comprehend. Very much an athletic mindset combined with aggression and trauma. Using the hell of life to produce a level of Greatness many look at as animalistic when its actually a philosophy in and of itself.

OP is 2 years old but I'm still going to drop this reply in the event that the OPer - as well (even more so) others - come across and are influenced by it.
Listen to the man himself, expressing with relative clarity and brevity, the GOOD motive driving his lifestyle mode of operation. Or just stay psychologizing him which (while of course possibly correct, even as armchair speculation vice an actually intellectually disciplined, scientifically developed hypothesis) conceivably may just be a defense-mechanism of a SCARED (and potentially, scarred) sub-conscious afraid of discomfort and re-visiting your own trauma, inner demons, and/or psychologically unpleasant but limiting weaknesses, etc.
Again I would advise you to listen to the following shorts, reflect, and reconsider with brutal honesty. Maybe your mind will be unchanged, but I think it will at least give you pause.

He means to consciously control yourself by recognizing the hormonal/nueroreceptors/neuromodulators effect on your body.
For example, when I am in a negative mood, I remind myself that the feeling comes from too much norepinephrine, so I will dynamically cultivate serotonin with a gratitude exercise. Or, if you're lacking motivation to start your workout, then you need a dopamine boost - so you find something that will push your dopamine higher. I use shilajit for this, coffee works for some people, listening to rap music helps me too.

"I don't think Goggins has any time for philosophy..."😁 that's probably among the most ignorant statements out there... 😅
You should probably educate yourself about greek philosphers and their physical feats. Heard of Pankration ? essentially "boxing"....Introduced into the Greek Olympic Games during antiquity...
Plato among others not only participated, he was actually named after his "physical features".... Plato (or plate) refered to his broad shoulders....
Goggins is certainly not comparable to greek philosophers (or any philosophers in layman terms, or in terms of intellectual production) but his way above average resilience, strong character, mindset and discipline contributed in many ways to where he is now...
