Is it governance? Foreknowledge? Virtue(s)? What offers the best chance for our entire complex and (made) capable minds to shepherd us along the arc until we reach the angle of our best self?

For example the color of an animal that make it blend more with nature and less sujectible to be eaten or to be seen by it's prey, so it's not the fittest that is being selected but the one who's genetic is the best for the environnement. Being well adapted or evolving well in society is different than being well adapted to nature if society collapse the one that do well in society might not be the one that survive.

One special day where I was feeling good and energetic I actually ran a half-marathon 21k (22 with some walking afterwards). It is still my longest run in terms of time (~2h15min) and distance. But the lifting, the daily calisthenics and the daily running eventually caught up to me and I stopped it around 45 days. I'm thinking about trying it again soon.

You don’t have to buy into the “no pain no gain” philosophy, for many this is a road block if you don’t have the time and energy for a full on workout. I prefer the “use it or lose it” philosophy, most people would be surprised at the benefits you get from just 1-2 sets every day, and not even necessarily to failure. The body seems to be like a pair of pliers, they’ll rust up and cease if left sitting for long, but everyday minimal use and they never will.
This is unfair, David Goggins has a clearer philosophy than 99% of people. One centred in the contrast between mind and matter, and how extreme self-denial can literally open up new worlds of perception and value to us, which are only denied in normal life by our weaknesses. He is actually proposing and practicing the same ideas that have characterised virtually all religions throughout the ages, he just doesn't articulate them in terms which, for Lex, would qualify him as a philosopher.
David Goggins is the type of bad ass that only those who have really truly experienced extreme situations and broken themselves in the process really can comprehend. Very much an athletic mindset combined with aggression and trauma. Using the hell of life to produce a level of Greatness many look at as animalistic when its actually a philosophy in and of itself.

He means to consciously control yourself by recognizing the hormonal/nueroreceptors/neuromodulators effect on your body. For example, when I am in a negative mood, I remind myself that the feeling comes from too much norepinephrine, so I will dynamically cultivate serotonin with a gratitude exercise. Or, if you're lacking motivation to start your workout, then you need a dopamine boost - so you find something that will push your dopamine higher. I use shilajit for this, coffee works for some people, listening to rap music helps me too. Hope this helps.
