I think shepherds pie was originally made with lamb, but nowadays it's made with with either beef or lamb, and has carrots and other vegetables in it whereas cottage pie is generally beef, onions, and potatoes, possibly with cheese.
I call it shepherds pie, even tho I make it with ground beef. I know the proper name is cottage pie but idc lol! I’m not worried about being politically correct when it comes to yummy-ness like Shepherds Pie😋!!! And so far your version is looking a lot like mine🙂 I’m only to the hamburger and sauce part tho. I use just a little tomato paste (probably 3/4 can) instead of sauce because we love spaghetti and I don’t want my pie to be similar to lasagna. I brown my hamburger with onions then add seasonings and paste, cook for a few to get those flavors together then add in some frozen veggies (corn, peas, green beans, & carrots) mix that and let the flavors come together and top with mashed potatoes (Usually a tub Bob Evans) and some cheese. But that’s just my family’s preference! Much Love from Indiana Paula 🥰
I'm from England, live in Venice Italy now. I would call it cottage pie, as far as I know a cottage pie is beef mince with root veg and peas. But topped with quarter inch slices of raw potato, over the top the baked till cooked the beef fat floats to the top cooking the potato in savory beef dripping, it goes a little crisp and is wonderful.... Sheppard's pie is made from lamb mince or the left overs of roast lamb.. I add swede with my carrots and onions, peas. Leave the meat mixture to cool spread in oven dish. Then spread mash potatoes that are cold over the top. Bake in oven till the meat fat floats up and browns on the top... Personally I like with baked beans!!! I know it's not really what you would serve, with it. But goes soooo well!! Keep up the good work Paula!!!! 😎
I love you Paula Deen!! I hope y'all have a Super Fantabulous Day, and Thank you for ALL of your great dishes, and the joy you bring with each one of them.
I use a good brown gravy mix, worcestershire sauce and a splash of either dry sherry or Irish whiskey as the sauce in my shepherd's pie. I mix the veggies into the ground beef mixture and use potatoes as my top layer.
In my family we make “Shepherds Pie” with ground hamburg cooked on stove top with onions and seasoned with salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder. Make some mashed potatoes. Put hamburg mixture into big glass pan (9x13?) adding some of hamburg mixture juice. Put 1/2 can of peas and a can of corn (and maybe some small cut cooked carrots) on top of hamburg mixture. Put mashed potatoes on top of veges. Smooth out mashed potatoes. Put few dollops butter on top of potatoes. Bake on 350 about 35 minutes...I think this is a very common recipe. Some people change up the veges with string beans. .. I look forward to making it with potatoes on bottom and adding Paula Deen biscuit mix (made with butter milk) on top.
Yes, Shepherd Pie is made with minced(ground) lamb or mutton. Traditionally, cottage pie was topped with slices of potato to represent the tiles on the roof.. Shepherd pie is made with mashed potato, and has the fork marks to represent the shehard's hair.

When I went to Ireland in the '80's our group ordered Shepherd's Pie at a restaurant in Dublin. It was made with lamb and had a pie crust top. It was delicious.
This Shepherd's Pie recipe looks so delicious Paula. I learned how to make Shepherd's Pie back when I was in Highschool. I learned how to make it with Ground Turkey. I've even put Corn and Cheese on top of it as well.
I never had Sheppard pie made like this. I will make it like this next. Always have meat and veggie on bottom then potato on top. Never with biscut. Wow sounds so good. Looks good too
I use a BBC recipe for Cottage pie (ground beef) and if you add a few sprigs of fresh thyme, 2 tblsp worcestershire sauce and sub 1 can of tomato paste instead of the sauce it makes a huge difference. It is really good with left over chicken with gravy. It almost reminds me of pot pie. Happy St. Patrick's Day everyone!
I made a Shepard pie with the leftover beef borginon I made last night. I just added 2 envelopes of beef au jus, some more carrot, mushrooms ,celery and a can of mixed veggies yumm
I call this shepherds pie as well. I've never made it with left over pot roast, but that sounds delish. Paula, can you tell us what you put in your mashed potatoes? I usually do garlic parmesan mashed potatoes from the box. Those packets, like you said are so so quick - but they have so so much sodium in them!
I'm always looking for something to make with leftovers. I think I'm probably Irish and English. My Dad said when he was over seas during WWII that when asked his name most would say "Oh you're Irish".
Shepherds pie is with lamb, cottage is with beef of some sort. I had heard years ago about the potato's on top and a crust on top but I don't know about that. And oh no tomato sauce or paste a gravy is a traditionally speaking
This looks fantastic! I've made it with potatoes and cheese on top but never with biscuits. I've put biscuits on top of chicken pot pie before so I can't see a problem with it here. Although my mind always goes to corned beef and cabbage when I think about Saint Patrick's day. And this shepherds pie would probably be good with corned beef, with potatoes on bottom and biscuits on top. That would be a proper St Patrick's day meal! 😆 Just add cabbage and carrots as the veggies. 😋 Thanks for sharing Paula. 💝
@@lizeggar2421 Me too! I have 4 and they are very spoiled, as they should be! I even grow them their own wheat grass. My ginger is the King of this castle.
A shepherd takes care of sheep and lambs--that's why it's called Shepherd's Pie and should be made with lamb. I hadn't heard of Cottage Pie until recently.
Never heard of tomato soup in a sherperd's pie, nor cottage pie. I grew up with ground beef mixture with gravy and the vegetables. Similar to way Gordan Ramsey makes it. Make it this way my whole life. I cannot wrap my taste buds around the thought of tomato soup, sorry, lol.
Thats the craziest Shephard´s Pie I've ever seen. Does Paula know what a Shephard´s Pie is actually supposed to look like, let alone contain, and does she actually care? Guess not.

I made a Shepard pie with the leftover beef borginon I made last night. I just added 2 envelopes of beef au jus, some more carrot, mushrooms ,celery and a can of mixed veggies yumm
Teresa is so funny, love to hear her
Go kick an Irishman... ha ha ha!!! Love you Paula!! This looks wonderful... I’ve always wanted to make it, but didn’t know how! Thank You!!
I love the way you say "children"
“Chirren”
I love shepherd's pie don't make it all the time but I do love it it looks delicious🤟🤟🤟🤩🥰😍🥔🥕🌽
This is different from my Shepherd's Pie recipe, but it looks delicious.
A real twist on cottage pie. Must try. 😃
Just love watching you cook and banter. You have always been my favorite t v cook. So glad I can still follow you. Please don’t ever retire! !
Shepherd pie is lamb and cottage pie is with beef! They're both delicious!
Thanks for sharing Paula. 💝

I love the potatoes on the bottom, yes they can get crispy. I'm gonna make it just like that now.
That shepherds pie looks delicious! Love ya Mrs. Paula!
Gotta try it. Thanks, Ms. Deen, you always have great and tasty receipes. 😋 😅
Pumpkin is a he Paula! Pretty much all ginger cats are male. I will definitely try this biscuit topping! Love y'all!
Wow! I never knew that about ginger cats! Learn something every day. Lol.
I just love cats, can never resist them.
@@lizeggar2421 Me too! I have 4 and they are very spoiled, as they should be! I even grow them their own wheat grass. My ginger is the King of this castle.
Traditionally, shepherds pie IS made with lamb.
Hello Ms.Paula. Have a good day.... yeah black pepper 🌶! Kids can take the pepper....
A shepherd takes care of sheep and lambs--that's why it's called Shepherd's Pie and should be made with lamb. I hadn't heard of Cottage Pie until recently.
Yes I love Sheppard's pie. I have scotch and Irish on my dad's family. Thinking about fixing some here soon.
Can I just say that here in the U.K. we make the best shepherds pie and my husband is Irish and he loves it. Sorry Paula
Kitty lover here, too.
St Gertrude is the Patron Saint of cats, and her Feast Day is March 17th.
Never had one, looks delicious
Never heard of tomato soup in a sherperd's pie, nor cottage pie. I grew up with ground beef mixture with gravy and the vegetables. Similar to way Gordan Ramsey makes it. Make it this way my whole life. I cannot wrap my taste buds around the thought of tomato soup, sorry, lol.
That. Looks. So. Yum!!!😋😋
I will be making it for my family and I never thought of pouring biscuit mix over it. Oh for good heavens!😋
Fat
your onrey,"Kiss an Irishman!" Well had 1,but now need another, send him my way,and I will make that dish, and and 💋💋! have love ya P D
I never heard of tomato sauce in it. I also know that potatoes MUST go on top for them to brown with some butter.
Brown Gravy Makes The Shepherds Pie Taste Like Pot Roast So Good:)
Looks yummy!
I have never had this dish! I would have to use broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, and asparagus because I don't like those mixed vegetables. 😆💜
Thats the craziest Shephard´s Pie I've ever seen. Does Paula know what a Shephard´s Pie is actually supposed to look like, let alone contain, and does she actually care? Guess not.
Hello Paula. This week I did 2 of your recipes. Chicken Fried Steak. And your spaghetti Bake. And Saturday Night I will have my granddaughter over for Dill Pickle soup. So far the first 2 have gotten rave reviews from the family I am hoping the soup will be good. I will let you know.
I love you Paula and I love your videos. I'm sure this is a delicious dish but it is in no way a shepherds pie.
Cottage pie if it's ground beef, Shepherd's Pie if it's ground lamb.
Pretty basic and I'm from the UK.
I had never heard the term “cottage pie “ before.
And it’s missing HP sauce
My granny was dark Irish and her parents were from Georgia.
I think the term is Black Irish.
And?
Paula, did you salt the meat when you were browning it ?
