Thank you for another great video! I use my glass pen without paint to scratch thin lines in the paper to darken a color I’ve painted on with a brush. Leaf veins, for example, and details on feathers. Because it’s a very fine tip I can get a subtle effect very easily.

I use liquid soap and hot water with an old toothbrush to clean a new or old nib. Toothpaste can help too;) And acetone in some cases (if acrylic ink needs cleaning off sometimes) but don’t get acetone on the plastic nib holder lol - it’ll kinda melt the area where the nibs go in. Trial and error ha.

Steve...I've found that india ink works to remove unwanted coatings on a new nib. It takes a couple of times. I wear rubber gloves. Dip the nib in the ink, let it sit a bit then wipe off.

Great advice, this nib thing! The quickest way of seasoning the nib is a good wash with straight oxgall. I think that's why your "pasty" watercolor works: there's some oxgall in the paint; fat paint = high oxgall concentration.

There are several approaches to nib preparation. These include quickly flaming the nib and
the use of solvents. Each of these methods presents potential problems. For example,
flaming the nib with a match can alter the temper of the metal. The end result would be to
alter the flexibility of the nib itself. This especially important to consider when preparing
expensive and hard-to-find vintage nibs like the Gillott Principality or the 303.
    Furthermore, the use of solvents such as acetone or ammonia instead of flame can work;
however, noxious fumes and potentially carcinogenic materials (in the case of some
    solvents) are best avoided.
It has been said that the penmen of old would simply pop a new nib into their mouth and
suck on it to get it ready for ink. As a dentist, I consider this a bad idea. A very simple but
effective method uses a dry Q-Tip with a small dab of ordinary toothpaste. Gently scrub
the new nib in ONE direction starting from the end opposite the point and stroking towards
the point. Use a light touch and be sure to treat both top (convex side) and underside
(concave side) of the nib. Modern dental abrasives will not harm the nib but will
effectively remove the nib’s protective coating.
Once the nib is thoroughly washed and dried place it into the oblique holder using a tissue
being careful not to touch the nib with your fingers since finger oil will repel the ink.
Please refer to my previous article that discusses in detail how to place the nib into the
oblique penholder and align it. Once inserted, moisten a paper towel with saliva and wipe
down the nib top and underside and allow it to dry for a minute or two. The saliva will
actually coat the metal with a protein pellicle that helps to render the metal hydrophilic
(fluid loving). The ink should now adhere without any problem. Lastly, be sure the eyelet
is cover after dipping the nib in the ink.

Hi Steve! I hope it is OK that I share this with you in the comments. By all means, if you know of a reason NOT to do this, PLEASE correct me! I was fascinated about your using a pen nib with watercolor. So, I ordered the items you recommended. In the meantime, I learned from several calligraphy sites about preparing the nibs by sticking them down into a raw russet potato. Now, granted, one must do this with great care so as to not splay the nib. Curiosity got the better of me and I tried it. And, it worked BEAUTIFULLY!! You stick the nib (covering all of the tip portion) into the potato and leave for 10-15 minutes (no longer than 15 minutes or rust could supposedly form). Take it out, wipe it off, and you are good to go. Again, it did exactly that! So, I just wanted to share my experience in case you find it helpful. I love your videos and have learned so much! Thank you for your generosity in sharing your knowledge! I still consider myself a "newbie" to watercolor, so again, thank you for all you do! Happy New Year too!!

Hey Steve, nice video. I am glad your getting some traction with your videos! The YT Algorithm is a real weird duck. I wanted to ask if you have ever tried to use a "bow", or ruling, pen for masking fluid? I took the one from my drafting set and have been using it for years. I find that I can spin the knurled wheel to widen my lines if I need to and close it down if I need to go back tighter. As it is metal cleaning is a breeze! No more wasted brushes! Just another option to consider for those still looking for a way to apply that dang masking fluid!

When I just started watercolor, I used metal nibs a lot for detail and for hatching. Now I barely ever use anything smaller than a squirrel brush 5 mm in diameter, it holds a perfect tip, so I never feel the need for anything else.

RE: masking fluid application - my favorite tool for masking fluid is a silicon nail art tool, they have them in all different shapes and the one I usually use is a cone that comes to a fine point. You can get quite fine detail with it and the masking fluid comes off the silicon really easily, I just wipe it on a paper towel or pull it off.

Or spit onto clean clothe/towel and wipe down inside AND out.
    P.S.
Touching the area intended to hold your ink/watercolor will transfer skin oil onto nib and create problems of its own!

I really like ink and watercolor and found your use of a 513 nib to be very cool!
I have recently been experimenting with a Hunt 103 on 300gsm and Multi-media paper to achieve hairline compositions. As you may know 103's are rather fragile. However, I find it a very satisfying challenge! I am thinking that I will use hot press next. Any thoughts?

Just thinking maybe the acids in the pigment you are using to coat the nib are etching it microscopically. I wonder if apple cider vinegar left on over night would season nib.

Could be. Several commenters here have said to stick the nib in a potato. And that it works really well to season it. Something else I'll have to try.

Makes sense. A potato is sugar water and acid. It reacts with Cooper and zinc. Hence potato battery. I am guessing the acid etches the metal. Think we are on to something. Going to try vinegar.

    I have a glass pen. It’s beautiful.

I'd never seen a glass pen before. It's fabulously beautiful and elegant. Was the wooden pen that you used earlier in this video one that you had hand crafted?
