    Just so you know, Bob Ross wasn't the first to paint like that. He studied under Bill Alexander, who started on PBS in black and white and I have no idea why he was so popular in B&W. "Fire it in" with the palate knife, just like Bob, but Bob had a different, softer voice, unlike Bill. I used to watch Bill all the time, even in black and white. My favorite memories were of being able to watch Bill in my bed, on two pillows because I was ill. When we were ill, we got the vaporizer and the 13 inch TV to watch. Great memories. We only had 4 channels, so that public broadcasting channel was a god send. Where I learned about opera.
    In the end, they fell out because Bob was so much more personable and his voice more calm ... even if his hair was a perm that started out of necessity. He hated having to keep that perm in the end. But it was his brand, so he kept it.

    • @mindofwatercolor
      @mindofwatercolor  Місяць тому

      True, Bob was more personable, but he was also just a better teacher. He was clearer, presenting the techniques in a more understandable, easy to duplicate way. They fell out because Bill became jealous of Bob's success using some of the techniques he learned from Bill. However, Bob created quite a few of his own techniques and processes that were very successful. Bob tried to help Bill and even promote him on his own show but it didn't work. Sad for Bill.

    You sure know how to make my day - this is awesome. I'm always afraid to be spontaneous because I don't have the intuitive vision to see what the result presents.

  • @carmium

    I know this is years old, but it's new to me, and I have to say these spontaneous pieces always leave me shaking my head! I watch the blotches of paint, speckles, and water, and each time I think "this one isn't going to come out as good as the other ones I saw."
    It does.
    It's gorgeous.
    The next thing I do will be a stab at a spontaneous landscape! Thanks for opening my eyes to this approach.

    I feel like you are carving out the trees as a sculptor would carve out a figure. Think I learned a lot about your approach to painting these spontaneous works by seeing how the ink was used then refined with a little more color. So appreciate your sharing.

    And this is exactly what led me to your channel, kept me coming back, and continues to inspire and sincerely amaze me. A skill like this takes many years, a lot of practice, and the intuition of a war horse to successfully pull off. I have a different method, which is so rudimentary in comparison, yet still effective for my needs. My mistake, for years, was not painting on an angle to let the water collect. That you mention Bob Ross is kind of funny, as to me, you're the BR of watercolor. lol! Great demonstration and really appreciate the narrative along with it. For new subscribers, this is gold. Pure gold. Thank you, Steve! :)

    • @mindofwatercolor
      @mindofwatercolor  7 років тому +13

      What a awesomely generous comment Mark! Thanks my friend, made my day! Yes, well rudimentary approaches are often deceiving in their simplicity. Reducing something to its essentials and maintaining strong visual elements is so much tougher than people realize as I communicated in my post on your recent video. Bob Ross is such an interesting icon isn't he? He was loved by so many who weren't even artists but who loved his demeanor. His techniques and style were nothing without that. I always hoped that if nothing else, I could connect, even a fraction as well, with my viewers on a personal level while still being myself. Not being able to do that was my greatest fear going into this UA-cam thing. Anyway, thanks for the amazing vote of confidence.

    • @MDCampbell
      @MDCampbell 7 років тому +13

      Just to note, you have succeeded in connecting with viewers on a personal level, and totally managed to still be yourself, in every way. It's what's made, in my opinion, your channel a gem among many, many stones. :)

    Steve, I really liked this video. I'm a traditional watercolor artist, you know... transparent pigments , no white , no black, etc. But one day I started playing around with the ink and wash or wash and ink. Loved it, not that I would give up my boooring traditional watercolor, but I'm now doing both.. So thanks for this video, you never disappoint.

    • @mindofwatercolor
      @mindofwatercolor  7 років тому

      Thanks Barbra! Yeah for the most part I'm a traditional watercolorist too. I started using line and wash more as an affective sketching technique when I started doing plein air journaling, but I love to do it for bigger works on occasion as a change of pace.

    Man....I love how "easy" u not only make it look but show us it is! I'm sure that it takes skill an knowledge to make some this nice, but the idea that almost anyone can make something similar to this that looks great is just inspiring! I'm just getting into watercolor, purchased a Cottman set and a masters touch half pan set that had a few more colors and I'm pretty happy with the bbn performance so far..... now i wouldn't expect anything i make to last....but at this point, i dont think i want anything to last lol. So much fun. I've always had a love for ink, i could just slowly color a whole page black with a good pen lol. But adding g watercolor over top or after.....now my true love can play too!?! I'm in
