You know how I frequently find buildings here in Orange County that I photograph with my Shen-Hao TFC 617-A panoramic 6x17 camera? Well, here's another. This time I found myself a nice little mid-century modern post office. It's got a killer roof line and some killer lights. I mean, the lights aren't "killer" like "cool looking", the lights are mood killers. I'm talking about those security/flood lights they blast parking lots with to keep out the riff-raff. This building has some of those. The roof-line though, that actually is killer as in "cool looking."
As an architectural photographer, I find those lights irritating. Especially if they're LED lights. They're so damn bright and in-yo-face that it's nearly impossible to get that perfect moody balance of ambient and artificial light. They just overpower the whole damn scene. By the way, what's the deal with LEDs? If you look right at them you'll burn a hole through your retina and yet most of them barely throw any light onto their subject. The source-brightness-to-subject-illumination ratio is outrageous. Is that a lensing thing with the light itself? Does anyone know what the hell I'm talking about?
I used my preferred film for these early-morning scenes: Kodak Portra 160. I shot some Kodak Tri-X, too, though. That was in a Mamiya C220 TLR camera. The black and white shots are meh, but I think the shots I got on Portra came out pretty good. They'll make good additions to the book I hope to make someday.
Thanks for watching!

I cannot tell you how much of a fanboy I have become with every video of Nick! Everything he speaks is invaluable. This is premium content from a higher grade human. That is all I can say
You are too kind, my friend. Thank you very much!
I couldn't agree more.
I think you dismissed those c220 shots a bit too lightly. That shot of broken handset is fantastic. It could be used as a methaphor for so many things: Urban decay, not listening to history, leaving someone hanging. Brilliant!
Thank you!
Or the dominance of cell phones where the pay phone is becoming a relic and a broken handset isnt even worth fixing anymore.
Great work as usual Nick thanks
Agreed. The broken handset photo is outstanding.
Yeah those shot are all pretty good!
@@nickcarverphoto I agree with the analogy you used in the video. These are the sprinkles on the top. These are the B roll, the embellishments that help to tell the story
This day immediately got better!
I agree
I don’t think I’ve ever gasped in excitement after seeing a video in my sub box before haha
Correct!
Just poured myself a Cuba Libre and this notification popped up. The large format gods are blessing me today.
Even fate appropriates a Nick Carver video....
a Bryan comment just upped the street cred of this video ten fold!.
A new on location video descending like a gift from the gods!!! Just what I needed today
And I bequeath unto thee a video of me photographing a post office. Basically as important as the Ten Commandments.
@@nickcarverphoto
1. Though shalt shoot all buildings centred and straight on 😁
2. See commandment 1
@@nickcarverphoto The Holy Post Office of St. Nicolas. Not as well-known as the Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch, but equally important in the canon. "And with 3ND shalt thou snap it. Not with 4ND, nor with 2ND unless it shall be to proceed on to 3ND. 5 is Right Out."
From an italian eye: the best shot IMHO is the BW 6x6 of the Post Office "Fullerton California 92834" . Very iconic, it screams America!
The Tri-X photos would accent the pano nicely in a book! I’m inspired to photograph my little city, strictly to freeze time.. awesome video Nick
I definitely enjoy these on location videos, they're not getting stale at all. I also like to listen to your thought process with the emphasis on composition as well as the troubles you go through, it's humbling. Keep up the great work and all the best!
I really appreciate this feedback. I worry about getting stale with these videos, so I’m very glad to hear that.
@@nickcarverphoto definitely not; fresh as a daisy 👌🏻
Nicely done, glad things worked out in the end man. And you don't need "Boys" or "Video Games" when you have an audience like us... amiright? eh....ehhhh? Okay. Awesome work as usual Nick, can't wait for the next one.
Haha. True. I got boyz all over the world in UA-cam land.
The truck made the story much better 😂 So it wasn't all bad luck, in a way...
Wonderful episode, Nick. I am certainly not getting tired of these compositions and all your thoughts that go into these shots. Thanks for taking us along with you. Looking forward to the book.
Nick Carver: goes out on location shoot
Truck drivers: "aight Imma head out"
Wife’s out of town, so that means photography? I’m a member of that club, too.
my birthday was next week but thanks nick
I started watching videos on this channel and surprisingly I cannot stop. Keep making them please
It's a gift to make the mundane seem utterly fascinating. This composition of the Post Office defines your style in my opinion. So many emotions and associations to unpack. The tri-x pictures really add to the story and I would like to see more public spaces/ utility type photographs.
I really appreciate this, thank you
From early on in the video I hoped you'd use the Mamiya to shoot that dangling phone horn. Satisfied now :-)
Thanks for this man, it’s always inspiring to watch you make photos. And to hear what they mean to you is also something I never thought about. Thank you for the sprinkles at the end, I thought they were rather delicious!
Thank you, sir!
I would have laughed so hard if the truck had moved from outside the post office to outside the 711
Tired of you photographing single interesting buildings? Is that even possible?
I love your jobs and your dedication, they make sense even to ugly buildings like that post office 😅
Never get tired of these Nick. 😀😀😀😀😀😀😀
Hey brother! Love it how you’re documenting all the shoots to then lead up to a book eventually. I miss the fluorescent vest, so no one asks questions when your shooting building 😅 awesome Vid!
Thank you! And I definitely should have worn a vest. I got honked at by someone and heckled by a couple of chicks who obviously hadn’t been to bed yet from the night before.
I'm so happy to see another on location video again. THIS SERIES IS SERIOUSLY THE BOMB
Thank you!
Babe, come to bed.
- I can't, Nick just posted a new video
Watching new video from Nick Carver, at 23:33 in Spain 🤟
Fuuuuuu** That damn box truck!!!
Found your channel just now!
Inspiring ✨
I always enjoy the architectural shoots, and yes I would buy the book. Your vision on these buildings encourages many of us to look at these everyday structures in a new light. I know my vision of the structures around me has changed.
Looking forward to the book! I think all these individual images are going to be even more impressive when viewed as part of a larger body of work.
Nick, WE are your boiiis Lol
If you publish that book, I'll be one of the first buyers
Fantastic Nick. Keep this series up that book will be stunning.
Wonderful as always. Just tried to donate but PayPal said “Donations to this recipient aren’t supported in this country.” This country being Japan, where I live.
Thanks for letting me know. I’ll have to look into that.
"Paying attention to how the different layers of the building move..." There're so many good and instructive observations within this segment. It's really worth watching more than once.
Great way to end the week with a Nick Carver On Location. Great shot of the post office, and I really like the 6x6 shot of the broken pay phone handset
I know this an old video -- I've watched it several times now, and again tonight. I really dig your photography. I hope you don't get discouraged if youtube's views aren't as lucrative as they perhaps once were. I think it's a bigger issue than just your channel, and your content is awesome.
His videos have been sorely missed!!!
Outside lights are often on a sensor, ( these were apparently on a timer, since they were still on when it was getting quite light out) and if you shine a very bright flashlight on them, they will turn off for several minutes. If you do this you want to have a good story ready in case the cops show up. Don't ask me how I know this, just take my word for it.
Haha yeah I’d definitely need a cover story for that one. “I was just shining a light on this federal building to get the lights turned off. Huh? Oh, no reason.”
I love those square b&w photos!
Great series of photo, Nick! I like the first pano more than the second photo and I think the black and white images at the end complement the story of this location very well.
Good luck for your book, it's definitely something I would be interested to buy. I can imagine a large coffee table book in the style of Thomas Mangelsen's The Natural World, with the binding on the large side.
Nothing to do with the photos, but it was nice to see at the beginning of the video that you also have a turntable ;-)
Another poetic and entertaining video wrapped with some beautiful images. Good work Nick. Bravo.
That 7-11 sign currently says "WE SELL LIQUOR", that would have been great juxtaposition with the church there.
This is not an OFFICIAL CHALLENGE, but a challenge all the same. Let's see Mr Lucky (AKA Nick Carver, yeah....) go up to the Alabama Hills near Lone Pine, California. I have a picture in my head (so to speak) of the awesome images he could fling in our direction.. What do you say Mr C? Yeah, it IS a healthy drive up there from OC, but you would love to see the high desert vistas and we would get eye candy. Just need to add that your little bit of the internets here is one of a handful for automatic thumbs up sites. Your videos are informative and your humor is much appreciated. Keep clickin' !!!
Thanks for another GREAT location video! Their too far between. The square B&W are great. Maybe because I'm a B&W square kind of guy.
It would be fantastic if you published a book! I love these on location videos! I also appreciate your excellent technical combined with artistic teaching, so hopefully that book will be in stone style of one of Ansel Adam’s books.
What is this "I really hope you're not getting tired of this.."... ? Where is your "I don't give a s*it" apporach? :)) Just keep photographing buildings and don't you ever dare to change that :D That's what people come here for! I love your videos. Greetings from Poland
For your book, please do not have 1 image over 2 pages. Especially 6x17. Ruins the composition completely.
Still have lots of love for the 6x17...have a Fuji G617 in addition to your nemesis Noblex 150 so I enjoy these very much! Thanks
I stopped @8:58 for a moment: As a commercial long-haul driver… we HATE straight trucks! They are the rat of the trucking world; the pigeon no less, even lower than RV drivers. These guys drive like racers powered by Prii’. Tow it to the nearest crusher… pleeez!😂
Nick, I actually think the c220 shots were awesome! Guess maybe that why I haven’t reached your level yet.
Aren’t we all ya boyz...? And I I like the square shots-but I’m more wired for smaller, intimate peeks over great giant wideness.
Excellent as always, thanks!
3000 views with 600 likes and ZERO dislikes in 4 hours is the craziest like/dislike ratio I've ever seen. You have exactly attracted your target demographic.
Hey Mr C (for either Carver or Camera ) I have a question for ya dealing with the Epson V700 120 film holder. When I use this "gem" of a holder, by the time I get the negative exactly where I want it, it is scratched/crumpled/fingerprinted to the point that I don't want to bother scanning any more. What is your secret to getting the negative in place without destroy it/myself or ventilating the scanner with a 45????
That look on your face was telling me that something was not what you wanted to see and then you turned the camera around and there it was, a fucking truck in your shot....I LMAO. I apologize it was my same luck that you have. Great video Nick....Keep smiling dude it's only photography.
hey man, great content - ALWAYS. Found your channel with the video you did on building the sleeping platform and have not left since. Film photography reminds me of my dad - when I was a kid (LONG ago) we used to go out and shoot pictures then develop our prints together. Much of what you do, and how you do it, reminds me of those days - Thanks for that. And, hey, sounds like you’re a hockey fan - so you must be a great guy!
Nice video about the struggle of Photographing your inner visualation of the scene. I however liked your 7 Eleven shot more. 👍
Sorry but I don't understand why did you focus on that boring building that much :D I am missing old Nick Carver videos :)
I think you going out shooting one-off buildings is why most of us are here. Loved the church/7-11 juxtaposition, there's poetry in that what with both being open around the clock. Good stuff, cheers.
Nick, Where do you have your film developed? Your videos have inspired me to start shooting with my film cameras again but I don't want to do my own film development.
I didn't see the potential of the building during your scouting but it's the symmetry and the blue tones and the composition... (and as I'm typing this I'm thinking "well yes of course, what else?" :) ). So all that to say I really dig the blue tone version and it does hold up next to your other building photographs.
Stunning video Nick, I really like your fantastic work, best regards from Italy.
Very nice video Nick! Thank you for sharing your experiences. Too bad I would also have liked to see you "in action" with the c220.
I knew it, the face @8.28. There's a truck in the way. I just knew it LOL! Great content dude, love it.
Walker Evans never had a problem shooting a building head on, full frontal. You are in good company my man. Drive on!
Hello again brother. As usual, a cool, exciting adventure into the urban jungle. I like what you did here, but I agree... it needs a more exciting sky. I may be spoiled tho... we've been having some epic sunrises and sunsets up here. I hope all is well my man, until next time.
What is the back pack your using in this video if you don’t mind me asking? Looking for something larger
Thanks for the unexpected cool start to the weekend with an on location video - allllways goes down well. Hey, you know what never happens in the desert? No vehicles parking in your composition... not that that's a hint or anything... about photography in the desert...
In the city where I live there's a nice old gas station that has been turned into an office type thing with lots of glass. When the sun hits it it's gorgeous. The only problem, there's always a hideous food truck parked blocking the composition. 😡😡😡😡😡
I always enjoy your videos. Always love your dissertations of how and why. And the different formats you use. Keep up the good work. I too like old buildings, churches, court houses, etc. The only thing I would have liked to have seen was the flags flying in the breeze, as your video showed.
Excellent photo trip 👍😀
Church makes the 7/11 shot 👍
It must take lots of planning to arrange for those trucks! 😅
Great juxtaposition of the cross and the convenience store, especially with me watching on a Sunday morning.
Very nice story and i love the first shot more than the more sunlit one. But you shouldn't downplay the b&w pictures. At least half of the pictures should be better presented and would have what it takes for large prints…
By the way, I envy you the Chinese Shen Hao…
When layouting your book, you should consider to put some of these detail shots beneath the big Panoramas.
Nice morning! Re the truck: I got up before dawn in Asheville and set up at the perfect spot to shoot the front of the Vanderbilt Mansion at dawn, only to find a big box truck backed up to the front door with its headlights aimed directly at me. Alas!
Hi Nick, great video! I love the way you manipulate the composition with the tilt and shift. Do you have a course on viewcamera's? I know how it works until some degree and i own a large format rail camera but i've not got the expertice you got, seeing how mucht you can step off center and line up everything the way you want is amazing!
Another banger of a video Nick. It’s interesting to see what sorts of unexpected routines people follow. I’m sure it’s annoying to have a shot possibly, or just flat out ruined, by trucks or other unplanned intrusions though. Glad this time it all fell into place. Even got a second shot as a bonus, even if perhaps you one day feel like you want to retake it. Keep on keeping on bruv
This building has little attractiveness, to say the least. Yet, it is worth taking time to get to it and start appreciating it. I think the blue mosaic tells quite a bit about its building period. You mentioned some details, like the paper dispenser and the trees, but there are some other details that attracted my attention, like the yellow hydrant, something inexistant where I live (Brussels, Belgium), and the antenna mast at the back. BTW, don’t throw away those Tri-X B&W shots yet. No left overs.
FINALLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WOOOHOOO!!!!!!!! Best day ever just got bester...lol
Awesome work, Nick!! I quite liked both of the Post Office photos, and I probably can't pick a favourite. I also enjoyed the Mamiya shots.
I don't think you should struggle about finding other angles besides your straight-on, centered perspective. I think the look you have used for several of these buildings is starkly iconic or iconically stark or something. In any case, it really seems to suit the subject. Maybe that is why you gravitate to it.
Jumped so quickly to this when I saw the upload 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
I just need to comment on how great a name "Private Sneakers" is. Couldn't help but notice it right next to the Post Office.
Never get tired of your one off building shoots :) oh! That truck you nailed anyway and love those b&w photos at the end telling the rest of the story
I try to shoot like this but, police are always questioning my intentions. Sure it’s public space , but just move on!
You don't have any Boyz, but you do have the smaller closet and your wife the larger one. "The natural order of things"!
Love love absolutely Feckin love a carver on location video then stop typing fool and watch the vid 👀 ok 👍
Yes I do like it you make it very entertaining 😄 😀 👏 😆 😉 👍 😄 😀 👏
How could someone ever get bored of your photography on location? It's always so good to watch and your insights are so precious ! Can't wait for your book to come out.
Nick, You need to go back to do the wide angle composition. The parking lot lines pseudo-mimic that awning. You’ll be glad you tried it. If not, I’ll buy you dinner the next time you’re in Charleston, S.C. Thanks for the content!
Nick Carver notice tree in his images maybe he is ready to start some Woodland photography, maybe ????
Nice video Nick! Cant wait for you to go on a roadtrip again to a desert or something like that.
Heck, Why not even a place where its freezing?!
When I see one of your on location videos drop, I get as excited as when a movie trailer I have been waiting for is released. I honestly love watching these videos and they dont drop too frequently, making them all the more special when they do. Keep doing what yo do man we love your work.
I agree with the over analyzing and the philosophical reasons why you take a picture. You take a picture because that's what interested you at the time.
Was it you in another video some time ago, you have some money to a trucker or food? Maybe that truck was getting some 405 donuts? :)
Thank god for that! I was starting to get Nick Carver withdrawal symptoms. Great work as always mate.
Don't have to over analyse your images, cries in BA photography degree 😂😂😭
Sorry man, at 8:37 when the truck was there I burst out laughing. You set it up well for your batting average! Despite the obstacle, great photos.
Like a photographer survivor man. Also amen to 18:30. I always over analyze.
That is a funky looking post office. It looks like it may have been a clothing store in a former life. I especially like some of the names of businesses in the background such as "Private Sneakers" & "Huntington Ramen"! LOL!
Super weird going down the film youtube rabbithole and seeing a video that was taken in the town you live lol. Nice pics
