P.S I don't think any reasonable person is buying Trump's excuse for not attending the memorial since such preparations could've easily been made several weeks prior not to mention the other leaders got to the memorial no problem.
While I don't believe his excuse since it wasn't raining heavily enough to ground marine force one, the other leaders don't have as tight of security as the president of the united states. His excuse is at least plausible since the secret service wouldn't want the president that far away from air force one with only the presidential motorcade available for evacuation on foreign soil (even France).

France has historically done some serious damage, Norman invasion of England, 100 years war - which was 116 years with France considered victor, Napoleon..
And regarding WW2 specifically, it's worth noting that Frances supposed allies after The Great War really fucked them over in terms of basically leaving it up to France alone to contain the growing German aggression under Fascist/NAZI Germany. They had the Maginot Line right up to Belgium, if Belgium had actually resisted Germany and assisted France in maintaining that line (as well as their own forward defenses) instead of deciding to bail of of the treaties and pacts made after WW1 and instead announced to Europe they were 'neutral' essentially ensuring Frances defenses being rendered useless, as they'd constructed the most elaborate, modern defensive line in existence at the time, but it was utterly useless since the Germans were able to just cut through Belgium and scoot around it.
Seriously, England was culturally very pacifist during the late 20s and early 30s, again - seriously reneging on some of the aspects of the Treaty (of Versailles) and strategically lowering their commitment as an ally to France and lowering their military spending, etc. France was the only country dropping big bucks into defenses that were supposed to have been taken up as a measure against Germany after the Great War.
The USA though, perhaps the worst offender in this context. They basically assisted in orchestrating the concepts behind the Treaty (of V) and laid out so much of the framework (for the League of Nations) but then refused to join, themselves, instead becoming isolationist (and when war in Europe DID break out again, it was political suicide to actually support the war effort of the Allies - only Japan's idiotic strategic bombing campaign -that brought the USA into the war.)
I guess all I'm trying to say is: France has a really unfair reputation and a very selective one, considering such a rich and LONG military history as being a MAJOR Europe/World power for centuries, far longer than the USA has maintained it's current reign as most powerful.

America was crucial. However, remove any other factor and the war could have lasted a lot longer. The Soviet Union was probably the biggest key in Nazi Germany's defeat however…

Trump picks on France for the events of WW2 but forgets that without France the U.S. almost certainly wouldn't have achieved independence and would almost definitely not exist today (at least in the same form). So perhaps he should be a little more grateful now that he's remembering things in the past.
There is also the fact that the USA did not have that big effect on the war with nazi germany as many people from the USA belives. What had an effect was Hitler had to move alot of his forces over to the east to fight USSR.

Marcos was definitely what we would call a personalist dictator in every sense of the word. Those are individuals who use the office for their personal gain and who appoint their family and friends to positions of power. Marcos instituted martial law, which makes him even different from Duterte, but I think the most striking difference between Marcos and Trump is that Marcos at least pretended to have served honorably in wartime. He also doesn't appear to be draining the treasury directly into his pockets. Some Filipinos remain loyalist to Marcos to this day because of the improvements that he made to infrastructure and to the affordability of rice at the time. Trump really doesn't have any interest in even the most basic of reforms. If you wanted to take the Philippine metaphor a little more deeply, Trump would be most analogous to some of the agricultural elites in the Philippines who were clients of the United States who became national-level politicians. Monied individuals in Russia and Saudi Arabia appear to have reversed the Patron-Client model on Trump, as he clearly is compromised by their influence.

There are some elements similar with the Weimar Republic. First, is that Trump didn't create racism or nativism but is feeding off of what was already there. This aspect is more reflective of 1840s America. Second he is absolutely working towards the delegitimization of all of our democratic institutions: education, health care, the media, the judicial system, and the electoral process. What really makes the United States more unlike Weimar is the rampant political violence and the only other alternative to Trump's party something believed by the majority of the population to be equally as dangerous. To most Germans, Bolshevism was clearly more destructive than the tenets NSDAP. @@kimberlys8422 Also, what divided the Weimar Republic more so than anything else was the generation gap. Most people who were at the upper echelon of power had achieved the Greatness we associate qwith Weimar under the Wilhelmine Monarchy. Their sons comprised the WWI generation and returned to Germany believing they earned the right through their sacrifice to dictate the future of the country. Their younger siblings were the ones who were driven towards authoritarianism because they couldn't fight in the war and had no hope whatsoever in themselves or in the future of the country and those would be the ones who would become the leaders of the NSDAP. This isn't the case in the United States, and we don't have the catastrophic hyperinflation and unemployment problems that Weimar faced which proved to the citizenry that their government was in-fact not legitimate.

Melania is a native Slovenian i.e. born in Slovenia, the northernmost state within the former Yugoslavia. Croatia is the next former Yugoslavia state as you go south, then Bosnia and Serbia (these two states are more side to side but south of Croatia).

Bosnia was under Catholic (Franciscan order) Hungarian influence.
Serbia came under Orthodox Byzantine influence.
Bosnia and Macedonia were very isolated Orthodox communities. Bosnia was so isolated it was semi independent while both Serbia and Bosnia were under Turkish rule.
The non Slavic Albanians came under increase Turkish influence post fall of the Bzyantine Empire. Prior to the Turks moving into the Balkans in the 1400s, Albania was under Vatican Catholic influence. Thus Albania still has an active Catholic minority even while most Albanians are Moslem.
In short, all five Slavic groups, Slovenes, Croats, Serbs, Bosnians and Macedonians divided along the lines they each allied with in the middle ages, and had strong contacts with those same groups when the Ottoman Empire was at its peak and till its fall.
The Albanians turning Moslem to get more support from the Turks against the Serbs, even as both were within the Ottoman Empire. The Ottoman Empire was weak when it came internal communities, i.e. as long as you paid your taxes and did not revolt locol leaders ruled. Thus the Albanias could fight the Serbs provided both side paid their taxes to the Turks. In such a fight, the Serbs had the advantage, they were more Serbs then Albanians, thus by turning Moslem the Albanians could call on the Turks to support them against the Orthodox Serbs.
This was an inherent weakness of the Ottoman Empire, a weakness that lead to its death in WWI.
Thus the division of the South Slavic people.
As to the time period Hungary was under Austria rule, both Austria and Hungary had they own bureaucracies, thus Austria was under the Holy Roman Empire but Hungary was not, even through the Ruler of Austria (who was also the Holy Roman Emperor till 1806) was also the King of Hungary. In 1867 this division was made more official with the formation of the Austro-Hungary Empire.
Background on the Balkans, which is why most other nations stay out of the Balkans, it is one huge mess (and I did not mention Romania and Bulgaria let alone the Greeks).
