If you want the same folding display but don’t want to be tied down to a non upgradeable laptop I’m guessing. I doubt the price matters that much to the target demographic lmao.
This foldability only makes sense if you're connecting to something that is physically pretty small. If you have a 15 or 16 inch laptop, you can fit a 16 inch portable monitor in your backpack or bag, and it's not this thick. Its main use case seems to use it with a small laptop, tablet or phone.
yup, thats me! for years I have been doing that. These days, as i mostly travel to the same places, I just bought monitors and keep them at my destinations. For $2200, one can buy a load of cheap, larger, monitors and treat them as disposable.
Right? Plenty of 15.6" based portable monitors out there that are a fraction of the cost of this thing that will easily fit right next to a standard laptop in a bag
One can probably create a great on the go workstation setup with this and a Mac mini. But this being 4x the price of the entry level Mac mini is too ridiculous
Reflective specular shine in the fold in the middle is more of an issue than the image in the foldable area. In darker areas it's not gonna be noticable.
it should be either 13.3/14" or 15.6" when folded. Going smaller than that it doesn't make sense if you want to pair with you laptop for productivity on the go

I know a few people who have to travel a lot for business and meeting with clients. This might be a very good option for them to give presentations/demos in unusual locations, even better if they can justify it as a business expense!
Just to say it folding screens should be using sqrt(2):1 aspect ratio once you know you know. Graphics output should get used to that option. 3:2 is pretty close and is a better compromise for running old and new content. I'm hoping for a 15"/20 something folding screen computer with strix halo at a similar price next year.
Forgetting the price, this is one of the first foldable screen implementations I might consider. Don’t want it on a phone or tablet, mostly because it scratches too easily… but if I can keep a usable size display in my backpack for working on the go, a folding display helps and it’s not as vulnerable as a phone or tablet. A 21-24” version would be appealing, don’t care about OLED though. Great, we have a first - now go forth Chinese companies and make me one almost as nice for 30% of the price.
It's definitely a cool piece of technology, but I'm from a generation that still knew about amber monitors and I'm wondering what you can do with them or what they're useful for? I can't think of anything right now. For me, over 2K is a lot of money and I'd always be afraid to take the thing with me, I don't know or am I wrong?
Very interesting product, I'm definitely not the target audience for this but it's really cool regardless. I wonder how the durability of the hinge will hold up over time. I own the Z Fold 4 and I thought I did a decent enough job of taking care of it however, it stopped fully opening after about 8 months in of owning the device. Some dust or crap made it's way into the hinge mechanism and pushed its way further in. The ZenScreen reminds me a bit of Samsung's hinge.
Asus yet again living on a different planet with those prices. It's hilarious when you can get a full-on zephyrus g16 OLED for that price, having a comparably sized screen with more appealing specs, and a full computer attached to it
I sighed when Plouffe said "foled", and then sighed again, harder, when he was vindicated by that sticker. 😆 As for the monitor, it's definitely not for everyone, and the price is wholly unreasonable for most people, but the idea has merit, and maybe in a few generations I'd replace my current portable monitor (a 13" OLED) with something similar as laptop travel companion.
When you can get 16" 3K portable OLED 120hz now for under $200 USD and are much lighter, I'm really struggling to see the demographic here. Maybe if it had 120hz.... I'd love to see them release a 14" portable monitor that's the same spec as in their G14 with VRR support
I'm trying to think when this would be useful, if you need a second portable screen why not have the zenbook duo which is both cheaper and a computer making it way more portable as you've only got to carry one thing, although I have always been a laptop person so I'm used to smaller displays
If you REALLY want to see if your Oled is wearing out look at solid Red then Green then Blue the White screens and look for weird shapes smudges or patterns
Put a battery in it and some OS and it will look way more attractive. I don't understand how it is portable if you can only use it when stationary. Just have a monitor where you are going then. With that price you can have 20 monitors everywhere and don't have to worry about carrying one and dropping it... and a hinge in the middle.
Do you have a latency tester for this? Super interested in this for replacing my crt monitors. Edit: ok you said 37ms of latency. Wich honestly is too much for gaming imho
I think I commented on some other LTT video also, that there is something about these thumbnails that feels off for me. I wonder is this some new testing or have these always been like this?
Foldable phones will only become mainstream if you can easily separate the foldable screen from the main phone. And since it's Asus, they can make a Padfone-like foldable screen you can insert your ROG phone in and then use it like an 8 or even 10-inch ROG tablet. In the same vein, the Padfone was the way we can use overpowered phones as our only device we need for communication and productivity.
I'm daily driving a portable monitor for 3 years now. And I dont understand setting where I'd prefer to have 4:3, but close my laptop. Otherwise You move it to side of laptop, grease would be much more visible and 4:3 too much for your sideways vision. I mean, if we even have to talk about utility, rather than 2.1k USD price, sub 1000 nit brightness, lack of battery despite the weight, etc.
Appreciate the technology, but if you use it as laptop extend, there are way cheaper non-foldable displays with the same size as the laptop you carry anyway. It's even more expensive than the foldable tablets (yes, the ones with compute units in them) 😅
Imagine the slightly distant future..34 inch ultrawide which is at least 144 or 240hz with all the benefits of standard qoled quality (when plugged in)...but it's foldable with (ideally minimal crease) so when you're traveling for longer or esp moving you can just pack it even in your carry on baggage...that would be my dream and my 100% wanna buy thing hehe
Was definitely considering this until I saw the price. I figure it'd be great with Samsung Dex or a broken laptop screen (or say not wanting to use the one given by a Framework laptop until they offer a nice OLED screen). At that price I may as well get a Macbook- but that does mean owning a Macbook. Compromises I suppose. Also for reference, I'd be using the screen for photo editing and multi-tasking clients.
To be fair, you are paying not just for the monitor, but also the R&D for the monitor. 5 years from now a comparable model will be $700-800 (still not cheap but hey "folding!!")
If OLED had a static brightness I would be happy. I won't buy another OLED unless I can turn off adaptive brightness. I checked, I can't find the option on this model.
Perfect for multibillion dollar companies to buy for their sales and marketing people to take on the road to trade shows. Here I am watching these videos at home on my 55" 4k TV which doubles as my computer monitor.
"60 Hz is good enough to game" said no one ever in any LTT video. This feels like a unicorn product, the only use case I can see is for a sale person that could benefit from the extra productivity of a second monitor, but is rarely at their office. Even for that use case, I'd want an internal battery in it, so as to be usable anywhere with enough desk space, being reliant on a wall plug kinda defeats the whole purpose of this already niche product. Let's say you have to work on the train, get a seat with enough desk space, and one plug. well.. you're gonna need to carry around the charging brick with a long cable, and an outlet splitter to be able to charge your laptop. And the biggest gripe for me aside from no battery, if you're carrying a laptop, you have the bag space to carry a non-foldable 17" portable display, which there are plenty of at much more reasonable prices.
I use my PC display 14- 18 hours a day burn in will happen for users like me. don't pretend burn in is not an issue anymore just because you don't experience it with "moderate" use
Let me get something straight it's 1080p with a Delta E 5 on an fricking OLED, with only 500nits, AND only 60hz AND it needs it's own power FOR 2200 Bucks just because it FOLDS? IS ASUS INSANE? Or am I going insane?
I want to know who is buying a lumpy monitor with a soft sleeve case for $2.2k. I'm guessing the profile isn't that great when you shove the wart and cables in the outer pocket of that bag. That is, until they slide out. Maybe they snuck zippers, buttons, or velcro pads in there under that edge, but it wasn't shown to have any means of fastening it closed. For that much money you can have 120Hz, OLED, and a hard case to hold everything. No lumps. That said, I'm probably wrong, and it could be a big hit. Maybe using a phone as source?
This guy looks like he might just own a monitor himself.

For that price I would expect a bit more functionality (make it a low powered android tablet when not connected, or even an e-reader)
Kind of interesting you can get 4:3 monitors again these days.
I sighed when Plouffe said "foled", and then sighed again, harder, when he was vindicated by that sticker. 😆
As for the monitor, it's definitely not for everyone, and the price is wholly unreasonable for most people, but the idea has merit, and maybe in a few generations I'd replace my current portable monitor (a 13" OLED) with something similar as laptop travel companion.
When you can get 16" 3K portable OLED 120hz now for under $200 USD and are much lighter, I'm really struggling to see the demographic here. Maybe if it had 120hz.... I'd love to see them release a 14" portable monitor that's the same spec as in their G14 with VRR support
Yeah, like wtf is the point of it folding?
Most people have large enough bags or laptop cases etc.
I'm trying to think when this would be useful, if you need a second portable screen why not have the zenbook duo which is both cheaper and a computer making it way more portable as you've only got to carry one thing, although I have always been a laptop person so I'm used to smaller displays
Can't wait to have DOUBLE the BURN-IN!
This is the perfect screen for the Mac mini M4 portable setup edition
My Arzopa may not be OLED. But it's 144hz, has hdr, no fold creases, and the best part, doesn't cost twenty-two-hundred bucks.
In the same vein, the Padfone was the way we can use overpowered phones as our only device we need for communication and productivity.
but does it fit in the lttstore backpack?
I'm daily driving a portable monitor for 3 years now.
And I dont understand setting where I'd prefer to have 4:3, but close my laptop. Otherwise You move it to side of laptop, grease would be much more visible and 4:3 too much for your sideways vision. I mean, if we even have to talk about utility, rather than 2.1k USD price, sub 1000 nit brightness, lack of battery despite the weight, etc.
Appreciate the technology, but if you use it as laptop extend, there are way cheaper non-foldable displays with the same size as the laptop you carry anyway. It's even more expensive than the foldable tablets (yes, the ones with compute units in them) 😅
would be awesome for remote work while traveling
Is this the only 4:3 OLED monitor? Ive been wanting one for a while
when do we get a phone version?
I looked up the price, it was literally 5x what I expected
To be fair, you are paying not just for the monitor, but also the R&D for the monitor. 5 years from now a comparable model will be $700-800 (still not cheap but hey "folding!!")
@@DanielMether I get it, and also Plouffe's reviewing it so I should have known it wasn't going to be reasonably priced lol
@RRFTube almost nothing is reasonably priced anymore. And if it is some jerkwad buys them all and resells them at an unreasonable price lol
If OLED had a static brightness I would be happy. I won't buy another OLED unless I can turn off adaptive brightness. I checked, I can't find the option on this model.
You mean that "Uniform Brightness" found on many Asus OLED monitors?
@@cl4ster17 yeah
missed opportunity to have a VESA mount on the back of one side. For car mounting it. Don't use it ? Close it down.
Wow someone finally did it. Someone made a monitor that makes Wacom look affordable
Does anyone know what keyboard they are showing in this video? It looks very nice.
expected to have a battery at that size and price for a "portable"
I'd love a cheaper non-folding/non-portable version. I'd be the perfect secondary monitor
Still can see the foldable line on the screen
Does the power brick fit in the case too?
did they say the price?
never mind ploof figured it out
that would be a good pair with new mac mini for working on set
This and an M4 Mac mini OR Vision pro and M4 Mac mini?
F-OLED
checks out
