"Whatever happens he is still your brother and he is my son", perhaps one of the most touching sentence coming from a father who knows his son is not into sports.
The father does not know the son well. Niles IS INTO SPORTS. Niles did not say no, thank you. I decline. You see Niles moving the ball around attempting to get the best position. He was trying. When Niles gets the adulation he embraces it and joins in with the crowd. Niles was told they were going to use his image. He accepted. He was not afraid of possible loss. You see from the front and the back it is almost like ballet.
David Hyde Pierce is an amazing actor. I was especially impressed by how utterly scared out of his mind Niles looks during his fumbling attempts to put on the vest.
I swear there were many many times Niles made me laugh much more than Frasier just due to David's acting. I mean, the whole cast was perfectly chosen for their parts, but Pierce was on a whole different level with Niles.
Everyone who was bad at sports in school and always picked last know how Niles feels before and when he realized he made the shot 😊 You know it's a TV-show but you still feel bloody proud of him. If Daphne was there 😊
This. Right here. Speaking from the history of the scrawny kid with a big head and a bigger mouth, wanting to have fun but not knowing the rules, the tricks, and never getting to play enough to gain any kind of experience. Feeling terrible for him, _with_ him right up until the moment when, for every last one of us who was ever picked last, Niles sinks it. We cheer not just for him, but for ourselves.
....and back at Frasier's apartment Niles said that the truck he won doing this would be good for antiquing. Yet another reason why Niles was so perfect.
pronkb000 I highly doubt that's how they did it. It's a huge waste of film stock. Unless David was an expert, they wouldn't let him try it out until he gets it
I loved this scene!! You went from cringing at Niles to cheering your guts at for him in record speed! And to learn that he actually did it in real life (mind, after a few takes or so) -- awesomeness times awesomeness. Niles has balls of titanium, he does!
That is what I liked about it. He knew he can't throw, so he used his knowledge of physics to figure out how to throw the ball as far as possible. (Maybe I am over-thinking this. haha)
@@amog849 It's the point of the entire series. I am sure the writers chuckled to themselves on how they made two horrible human beings likeable to millions of viewers.
One of my favorite Frasier and DHP scenes, bar none. The raw euphoria and amazment running through him is chilling. Awesome Alan Parsons Project background too, very fitting.
Niles: Oh now Frasier, don't grouse, I've earmarked a pair of practice pants for you. Frasier: Thank you Niles, but I like to think I've already MASTERED PANTS!! 🤣😂🤣
Nobody will ever convince me that Niles wasn't the main character of this show. I don't care if it's his brother's name in the title, Niles is the protagonist.
This is my favorite episode. I love it! I love the music effects, and of course, the symbolism. Niles was just about to have his first time with Daphne.
When this show was first run on the network they showed many of the missed shots during the end credits. David Hyde Pierce took about 30 shots before he made one successfully. They do not show these in any syndicated viewings I have ever seen. Maybe they're on the DVD releases. Also note that the shots are taken in an almost totally dark arena, save for two spotlights. I assume this was done so that Hyde Pierce wouldn't have to do this with a full crowd watching him miss all those times. Still, a fun episode.
That was one of the best and most triumphant moments of the series, especially for Niles. Maybe even more than when Daphne showed up in the Winnebago in her wedding gown before she was supposed to marry Donny. Well....maybe. Of course that line when Niles tells Daphne to fasten her seatbelt and she replies, "Fasten yours, Niles." Yeah, that was pretty triumphant too. He was certainly in for a wild ride during season 8!
Love this scene‼️ I wasn’t that great at sports. One day at our gym-class softball game, I slid into second base ‘Safe’!! Unfortunately I was also out, because my knee hyperextended and swelled up to the size of a soccer ball.
Missed a golden moment "Oh my, these rich, waxy emollients are delightfully soothing." His moment of triumph, and the sheer madness in his eyes are adequate though :)
When this episode aired originally, the end-credits was a montage of the number of shots David Hyde Pierce took to make the shot. Something like "Attempt 25." I've never seen the montage since, I don't think it is even on the DVD set for the season.
LET ME SHOW YOU SOMTHIN ! 🤭TeeHeeHee, O` May God ! He made the shot, By far my favorite SIT,COM and the writers put it together beautifully! No one but Niles could of pulled it off!
Before Niles throws he looks to his father and brother for Frasier's approval (the thumb's up) and his father's positive vibes (dad doing the tribal chant with the fists). I believe it is this that drives Niles forward.
"Whatever happens he is still your brother and he is my son", perhaps one of the most touching sentence coming from a father who knows his son is not into sports.

He was into sports. He said it's been awhile since I did basketball.

It was nice to see Niles have a win that was physical instead of intellectual.
Pretty sure getting Daphne pregnant was a physical win.

Martin's friends leaving messages on the answering machine and how proud he was of Niles was the best part.

David Hyde Pierce is an amazing actor. I was especially impressed by how utterly scared out of his mind Niles looks during his fumbling attempts to put on the vest.
darthen856 me too I was totally able to relate to the way he looked nervous
I'd say he's quite adept at putting on "vests". "Jerseys" on the other hand.... :D
The look on his face after he sank the shot...

Oddly enough, easily one of the most touching scenes in the series.
+Multazimah agreed
It looks like it's gonna' go so wrong. And then he sinks it...
Yep
2:37 🤣😂😂🤣
His face acting in this is phenomenal. I felt every moment.

Best part of this: no special fx. It took a lot of attempts, but DHP eventually legit sank the shot.
pronkb000 I highly doubt that's how they did it. It's a huge waste of film stock. Unless David was an expert, they wouldn't let him try it out until he gets it
0CET2 he got it on his 27th try. I agree it’s a waste of film but still it’s one hell of a shot
Well it helps that Kelsey Grammer was the director for that episode.
I was gonna say, wasn't there some sort of outtake reel that showed all the missed attempts? I think it was a DVD extra or something.
@@0CET2 Film? ---- Oh yes. Amazing what you can find out on IMDB.
"Haven't done a lot of basketballing" LOL! Niles Crain Rocks!!

still "this is niles house!" not really a fan of ur works (not @ all). however, ur cuz w/ his "star spangled banner" i'll give props 2
One of the best moments in this series.
I love the part where Frasier and Martin both facepalm when Niles fucks up before making the shot.
Yep, adds to the awkwardness of a strange but euphoric situation.
Language.
Its amazing that he made the shot when he doesn't even know how to dribble a basketball.

He has balls of titanium? What does that even mean?
Oops, sorry, just noticed this -- titanium is stronger than steel. Think about it.
Were you referring to the basketball?
JanetFunkYeah no "balls of steel" is an expression

"OH! What the hell was that?"
"Nothing, it's just halftime"
Class.
One of the funniest parts of this scene for me is how Niles looks like he's about to cry when he's trying to put the jersey on.
Niles shot the half-court shot "Old Granny" style!! And he made it too!!!!! LOL. Priceless!!!!!
That is what I liked about it. He knew he can't throw, so he used his knowledge of physics to figure out how to throw the ball as far as possible. (Maybe I am over-thinking this. haha)
Deven Kimoto Hey it worked for,Rick Barry...
Granny style is just a better way to throw free throws.
That was smart though. There's no way he would have gotten it in by throwing it any other way.
That fight with the jersey is legendary.
Brilliantly acted by David Hyde Pierce
They are all top class.
This is one of my favorite "Niles" moments.
I love Martin's face when he makes the shot! It's so gooood
Frasier: I spy, with my little eye, something beginning with "V."
Niles: Vagabonds

The part that makes this a classic for me is the way the shot is framed, with Niles on the bottom corner and the ball flying to the basket XD
Oh, poor Niles! I know how he feels! He looks like a small, terrified rabbit. So happy it ended well for him. He was why I used to watch 'Frazier.'
We all have a little Niles in us.
He was so proud when he realized he took the shot 😊
This is one of the best episodes of Frasier!
Laughed my ass of ten years back and this scene still gets me. Miss those good'ol times.
Man I get this. I totally get the rush of someone naturally un-sporty finally achieving a basketball goal through chance. It’s pretty thrilling.
One of my favorite Frasier and DHP scenes, bar none. The raw euphoria and amazment running through him is chilling.
Awesome Alan Parsons Project background too, very fitting.
YES! ALWAYS gives me chills despite it being comedy. It's just so well played out!
The way he looked over with pride after ONE BOUNCE and then let it go 😂🤣
Niles soaking up the laurels of his basketball shot is too funny! Stiff as a board, like a child having a taste of sugar for the first time!
The way he chases after the ball like a little old granny.... hilarious.
Fittingly, he shot the ball granny style.
I was so proud of him!
I was so happy for Niles when I first saw this and still am. Just loved at how shocked he is that he did.
I love it! I watch repeats of frasier every morning on channel 4 and always love when they show this one(whooping cranes)...Go Niles!
I had no idea he actually made this shot for real. Crazy!
I remember watching this with my dad. I remember the music. It was perfect. Sirus (eye in the sky) the Alan Parsons Project.
Only reason I searched. Thank you sir or ma'am
Good call. I thought it was a funky version of a Floyd song (Parsons produced DSOTM - more than passing similarity)
thank you very much, for name of the song
It's a pretty common song at games. It fits the mood here pretty well too.
"Oooh, uhh I hit the round part! That's worth, uhh, a half a point." lol

My all time favourite Frasier moment and episode ! Great stuff!!
Niles talked soooooo much sht after that. Showing up to the coffee shop wearing a damn jersey jacket 😂😂😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣🤣
Possibly the most awesome scene in all of FRASIER.
It's just a pity that Daphne wasn't there to see Niles as she was at a weight spa (Jane Leeves was having her baby around this time).
And she goes to the spa and loses 9 lbs and 12 oz
Yeah I thought making Daphne gain weight was brilliantly done for this show.
