Those Wildcat pilots endured a special kind of hell on Guadalcanal. Never realized it could be so bad.

Reminds me of when the Germans invaded Russia. In the beginning of this invasion they steamrolled the opposition. They believed just like the Japanese they were invincible.

They were invincible, the Russians died at a rate of 4 Russians to one German soldier. What beat the Germans was the command not allowing retreat and refocusing. That and that the USA gave the Soviet union a modern manufacturing base. But don't get it wrong, the Germans were almost unbeatable.

@@bayareaartist999 the Germans were unbeatable because of modern chemistry; their troops were juiced up on methamphetamines. The Russians, having more soldiers than the Germans was, I suppose, unfair. And the Germans lost the Atlantic war: three out of four German submariners who set to sea never came back.

A lifelong interested ww2 nerd, Adm. Raizo Tanaka in my humble opinion was one of the IJN's more capable ship commanders. His adventures in the war is example of the main failings of Japan's various Administrations. Headquarters wouldn't hear his philosophies, and Tanaka wasn't shy of expressing his idea's forcefully to his Uppers. He had the same issues that all in power had, when his Tokyo Express Force beat an American opposite, his orders had been to destroy the transports, not engage in Battle, after the fight was over he decided the transports were beneath him in light of his victory and daylight approaching, he didn't even attack them at all, this led to his relief of command and transferred to a backwater base, he was one of the few that survived the war.

The Japanese doctrine of decisive battle engagement was valid in the beginning, but after midway and upon realizing they no longer held numerical or technological superiority, this became a very risky proposition, a gamble which they ultimately would lose. This inability-or unwillingness- to change their strategic thinking combined with the production disadvantages inherent in their economy put them in a no-win situation fro mid-42 onward
