Thanks a lot for your video! I just purchased a 1991 8hp very similar to yours. Everything looks to be the same. This will definitely help me out! Thank you!
I just carried out this water pump repair out on my 4hp and it was my first time doing it and yes I made that mistake of not aligning the copper water tube. Back off it goes and this time I used the flashlight method to make sure it was in.
As water pumps go your right how easy it is ! I would never have thought of using gasket sealer on bolts ?! Duck hunters up here love the 6hp OMC outboards , I can’t get enough of them but the don’t like the 5 1/2hp where I have quite a few of those ! Go figure ! AOMCI super meet at Tomahawk, Wisconsin on the 4 - 7th August BE THERE OR BE SQUARE ! Lol. I just like watching your videos even though I’ve done it 1,000 times ! Lol
Thanks again it helped me get this done! I do have a concern though. When I used the original key there was a good 1/4 inch of free play. I used the one that I got from ebay and it fit good no free play. The concern is the key that came with it seemed like a hard plastic. I will see if it lasts. Should there be free play when the impeller is on the shaft?
Do you need to engage the drive shift into forward position before you take it apart? I watched another video where he said to put it in drive first for some reason. I have an 88 8hp Evinrude so its almost exactly like your motor. Thank you
Grease on top of the driveshaft won’t break anything, but I since the grease is not compressible, it might prevent the shaft from being pushed all the way up. It fills the space in the crankshaft where the driveshaft has to go. It’s the same idea as doing a brake job on your car, where they say to lube the caliber pins but DO NOT put grease on the end of the pin, where is slides into its passage way.
Brandon…where did you get that shaft key for the impeller? My shaft is flat like the video but johnson parts catalog shows a pin. Im not sure if a pin would work. Needs to be like your pin which fits in the flat spot on the shaft as well. Is that plastic? Ive got a 4hp seahorse.
I am Working on the same motor except mine is a 1982 7.5 Johnson , but it looks the exact same,,, PROBLEM ,,,, the Drive Shaft going into the Bottom of the Power Head is stuck in,, The bottom leg came off with just the Gear change Rod ONLY ,, The main Drive Shaft that goes through the Water Pump is still in the Motor ,,,,,,What now ,,Please help ,,cheers Phil
Hello, I have the same engine, I followed your advice, everything is fine, but the Forward/Neutral/Reverse selector no longer works, what did I do wrong? Can you help me please. THANKS . (I am in France).
Hi Brandon, I recently purchased a 7.5 1983 Evinrude outboard in the shift shaft came all the way out so the orientation is off. Can you explain to me how I can get the orientation right?
Hey Brandon, is the OEM gasket compound no longer available? I tried to get some last summer, and I looked at your link just now, and all that shows is alternatives to the OEM compound you use in your videos. I ended up getting the aviation gasket stuff and it looks the same as the OEM compound but I am unable to find the actual OEM stuff.
Hi, I bought the exact same engine and I am very happy with it. Since I have to replace the propeller, could you give me the right measurements: pitch and diameter? Thank you very much
I've seen in some videos that there's a shift linkage pin that has to be removed. Is there a way to tell on which motors have them. I have 94 8 hp Evinrude
Yeah I bought that little can of sealant from a marina 1309 plus tax when I was asking the guy for it he says we never use that stuff I find that hard to believe since seen motors they worked on and it certainly had it fresh too
yeah, they probably do. or a variety of it... maybe we never use that size, we buy the gallon. Don't know. But if they arent using it or something similar, you need a new shop.
I have been using Permatex Aviation Form-A-Gasket No. 3 Sealant Liquid. Because that is the only similar compound easily available in my country. So far seem to work just fine.
Your simple method of turning the flywheel to engage the top driveshaft spline with the motor just saved me so much hassle. Thanks !

Thanks Brandon - followed your steps and it went smoothly. Thanks again!

I have an 84 8hp. Trying to get my lower unit off. It’s like there is a linkage for the shafts. But dang if I can find one!!!

Thanks nice video! Do you leave gear shift in Neutral?
Why don't you just use anti-seize compound vs gasket sealer or just preference? Good vid.
Thx so much nice pee stream Question aren't those water pump bolts supposed to be torqued??
The center gear shaft of mine did not come out of the top end is that bad and it's still not pissing
same here, and I cant place the small plastic pice in like that

Your voice reminds me of Will Forte. thats a compliment
Newbie here. As it wasn't really explained, was it really necessary to take the propeller off?
Nice vid love your content, how’s the house going?
Nice video as always. Would you mind doing a video of you lower unit vise/clamp/support stand? Thank you for taking time to film and edit this video.

You never mentioned how you insure you shift rod is in the right place. Forward? Reverse?
Is the Permatex Aviation Form-a-gasket a good substitute for the OMC stuff?
Did you have any issue getting the old cup out?
I have a 1998 5 hp Johnson. I can’t get the lower unit off as it seems to be attached to the FNR lever. Any suggestions?

Hopefully this reaches you.
The leg on my 4hp deluxe is not coming off easily what should I be looking for?
got all the bolts out of the lower?
I have a 6hp Johnson water pump works good, I just don't know how long it been in there. I may go ahead and replace it.
Hi, I bought the exact same engine and I am very happy with it. Since I have to replace the propeller, could you give me the right measurements: pitch and diameter? Thank you very much
Mine is a 1996 Johnson 8hp. Is there something that holds the shift rod or drive shaft on the engine side? I can't seem to get mine out. Thank you
I've seen in some videos that there's a shift linkage pin that has to be removed. Is there a way to tell on which motors have them. I have 94 8 hp Evinrude
Great video, thank you. One thing: that pin you put between the driveshaft and the prop is not a drive pin - it's a shear pin. Just saying.
I can't seem to find where to get this kit, can I get a link
