Something a lot of people don't understand about these old days before the internet really took off. These games were something you would only get maybe once or twice a year so they had to be HIGHLY playable and replayable. So when people say "there's too much backtracking" or "there's too many collectables", that's by design. In hindsight though this is extremely undesirable but back then it was amazing.

    • @Silver-Nao
      @Silver-Nao 6 годин тому +7

I even had this argument with my older brother that the designers put all these collectables into the design to add high replayablility along with being time consuming in a good way.I kept saying that you don't have to collect literally everything which is why they added soooo many colored bananas so you dont have to scrounge around for the last colored banana in a whole sub section of a level.I don't think people understand that at all and bandwagon off of here say of "did you know dk64 has over 4k collectables?!" And start to echo say over people complaining about such. You only need 100 out of the 201 golden bananas which is a god send.I think it was golden for its time and all the hate is unwaranted since now a days we don't have a high amount of open world high count collectathons.Wish more people would give it a try

Honestly, people don’t appreciate that having to wait. Used to spend ages just walking around this game because it was fun and my brain wasn’t bombarded every two seconds with a new game to the point that playing video games is actually pretty boring 🤷🏻‍♀️

When I replayed DK64 a few years ago I had the same experience. I went into Gloomy Galleon thinking I’d have a horrible time, and left it having had a good time. The atmosphere and music make up for many of the shortcomings.

As a kid i was deathly afraid of water in video games, and dk64s waters just scared me so much for no reason. to the point dropping down from creepy castle into the water would always terrify me something would chase me before i could get to the island. I have to assume this was an irrational fear from moving the n64 and it making glitched noises as a kid. it was specifically n64 games with water that freaked me out.
When the save my brother got me passed galleon the first time got corrupted for a long time i never made it passed frantic factory in the new save, and no matter how hard i tried in galleon you must go underwater at least once to get enough bananas to face the boss.
Once i finally got the courage to actually play the world fully i actually came to appreciate the atmosphere of GG. That being said, its just wayyy too empty to enjoy. it feels like a buffer world they worked on to compensate for how many unique and fun things frantic tried by having a world you dont really do much in so they could focus more resources into other worlds. with it being paired alongside FF, the water raising gimmick, and mostly all places can be explored by multiple kongs it feels like that was their intentions.
I wish their water raising gimmick wasnt mostly pointless and ever needed to be used once. maybe if there was more areas you could walk on, but needing the water raised to swim to collect bananas feels like a better alternative. raising the water by 5 feet which lets you reach 2 platforms, and lose 1 is just completely pointless lol.
My biggest praise for this world is the music, and lighting when the lighthouse section turns to evening, id love that as a moving wallpaper.

Also to no surprise its my least played level, and least completed level (The randomizers really want it to be my most played on dk64r though lmao) i only this year learned about the pirate ship interior chunky can enter when i was doing screenshots with the map viewer website and noticed that and creepy castles tool storage room. At some point i want to 100% my original save file on my n64, i just wish it was easy to port save data to PC/WIIU lol

I'm one of those rare people that actually like Gloomy Galleon lol I just think the ambiance is really neat. It has pirate theming, sunken ships (which you can explore), sunken treasures, a lighthouse, a mermaid, a swordfish, a seal. The fact that the Kongs don't run out of air when underwater (which is the most annoying part of water levels in my opinion) makes this leagues above other water levels in the N64 for me. Also, I didn't find the swimming mechanics too annoying, and I like how the Kongs can swim relatively fast. The teleports were well placed and really helped with traversing from one lake to the other, too. One downside for me is collecting the underwater colored bananas, which felt so much more scarce due to being scattered in the vast lakes.

I think one thing that gets overlooked with dk64 and gloomy galleon is that it kind of keeps true to the dkc series with no air meters for the water levels. DK64 could have introduced in air meter in the jump to 3d and made Gloomy Galleon infinitely worse, but thankfully different. As much as the large level design with open bodies of water annoys me, you thankfully can take your time exploring even if painfully slow at times

I know its such a small reference but i always liked how Diddy's pirate ship banana loosely referenced dkc2. He starts at the ship and finishes at the highest point he can get to.

Gloomy Galleon is the definition of a mixed bag. The theming is great, a pirate sunken shipyard calling back to Captain K Rool and nailing the aesthetic perfectly. The water areas aren't fun to traverse, especially the big one and the golden bananas range from just ok to annoying. One of the bigger problems with the level is that it's possible to reach Pufftoss without getting the DK boat race banana. I know cause for my first playthrough I didn't do it before I reached the boss and was suddenly thrown into a boat id never seen before (it's not hard to control and that run happened when I was a kid, but the fact that it's possible is a little off-putting.) Now I think there's a solution to some of the pacing issues with traversing the water and introducing the player to the boat with no stakes when learning the controls for it.
Make it so when you talk to Funky Kong in the level the first time, have him mention that getting to his shop is a long swim so he has the boat to make getting there easier and have him point out it's next to his shop if they want to use it. This makes traversing the surface of the water easier, calls back to the original DKC where he had a ride business and introduced the boat in an environment where players can learn how to use it without learning on the job during the race or the boss fight.

when it comes to water levels...those always have a negative air surrounding them since there's so many of them in 2D and 3D games, it just seems to be very hard to make good ones.
It just feels like for the very few times there is a good water level in a game like the Ancient Cistern, Lake Lamode or Bubblaine, there's always bad ones like the Water Temple, Great Bay Temple, Rusty Bucket Bay and Gloomy Galleon. I swear in games the most hated level themes tend to be water levels and ice levels

Ahhh Gloomy Galleon. It certainly is a level you enter making a groan. I'd have to say both it and Crystal Caves do also suffer from the problem of not seeming landmarky enough (crystal caves moreso) and there's definitely some spots that look to similar to where you'd be confused if you were in the right place or going where you mean to.

I’ve always had a love/hate relationship with gloomy galleon. Water levels in games have never been any of their strong suits. Mario 64 or Banjo games with its air meter underwater, the slow movement of your character, and most of the challenges aren’t that fun either because they’re not about platforming obviously.
At least with gloomy galleon, there’s no air meter which I’ve mentioned in a previous video years ago. So that’s already a plus. You can explore until your hearts content. Also the other thing, as you mentioned at least a handful of the golden bananas are actually obtained above water, which is really nice. Not every single banana is collected in the water, which is a nice change.
Using Enguarde definitely makes the world much easier. Although I wasn’t scared of the depths when I was a kid. It still has a spooky/unnerving vibe though.
I have to say that I am pleasantly surprised with how this world is. Even though some of the challenges are rather difficult. Funny enough, I didn’t have trouble with the underwater mechanical fish. Although that’s interesting about the lag, caused by the sniper scope. I didn’t know that until years later. I just beat it as a kid on my first try. I guess I was just lucky. Lol
Overall, I can’t complain. It’s a decent world even if it’s not that great. Still gets a pass in my book.

I actually kinda like Gloomy Galleon. It's not DK64's strongest world, but I think it's better than Fungi Forest.
The music and atmosphere are just absolutely breathtaking to me. I really like the connection to DKC2 with the pirates' theme and Captain K. Rool with his blunderbuss. I don't know-it was just a nice experience as a kid. I never had that many issues climbing up the inside of the lighthouse. It looks like you were headbutting against some invisible mumbo jumbo-that was so weird to me, never seen that.
For me, Gloomy Galleon is a solid B-C Tier world.
BUT I think there is an explanation for why people don't like Gloomy Galleon that much. It can sometimes invoke similar vibes to Wet-Dry World from SM64, which players have theorised about for many years. Apparently, there's a large number of people who always seem to stop wanting to progress once they reach Wet-Dry World. Something about the eeriness and music apparently causes some subconscious dislike or whatever-there was an interesting video about it.
I draw this connection because recently I replayed DK64 with the Tag Anywhere mod, and I felt the exact same feeling. I was having a blast playing, but when I got to GG, I kinda thought, "Eh, I guess some other time," and didn't start playing again until three days later. It might just have been a personal experience that time, though water levels tend to invoke this feeling in players. For example, I have an intense fear of very deep water. Oceans creep me out, and that's a pretty common fear. Perhaps it's something subconscious..
(the video is called "The Mystery of Wet Dry World’s Negative Emotional Aura in Super Mario 64". very intersting.

Gloomy Galleon definitely tweaked up the collecting difficulty a tiny bit
    Hated the mechanical puffer fish
Hated chunky’s cannon ball mini game
But other then that I dig the music of the area and how the tune switches up between indoor land area vs out in the open sea area
The music track for this area is the kind that you can hear outside of the game… if that makes any sense

  • @turntoyou

Not a terrible world, but still my least favorite. Could have been improved with:
    1. Less lag, somehow
    2. Better lighting -- I know, "gloomy," but it is genuinely too dark to see well when underwater and just becomes oppressive and annoying
    3. I think it is kind of claustrophobic and needed less surrounding walls. Jolly Roger Bay suffered from this as well. There's plenty of gloomy vibes inside the sunken shipwrecks and the stormy side that this extra oppression is unnecessary
    4. Just get rid of the mechanical fish lol

Played DK64 for the first time recently (for DK December of course) and yeah GG is probably my least favorite stage. I hate how teleports 1 and 5 from the lighthouse become inaccessible from that side when you lower the water, it just seems cruel. There was one golden banana I couldn't find without looking it up either - the pirate ship hatch for Chunky. It just looks too inconspicuous especially when you aren't looking for it. And yeah as much as I appreciate the Whomp's fortress similarities, the inside of the lighthouse was not fun. I also thought I was missing something important bc I couldn't find the other teleport #2, but it was just on the surface of the water but in a place where there's no reason to go within its draw distance the whole time??? ok then lol

Everytime I hear someone talk about gloomy galleon I hear you always are raising and lowering the water and how exhausting it is similar to the water temple in oot. But fun fact... You only need to raise the water once. You can get most of the bananas from the world with the water lowered... the only ones that need the water raised are the 2 gold coin piles, chucky's cannon, dk's race, and the ship and light house, oh and snide unless your doing it all in dk isles snide's hq

The most fun part of Gloomy Galleon would be the underwater sunken ship in the dark, while yes it was creepy and spooky, exploring something in the dark like that makes it worth exploring because you don't know whats down there. The timed events to open one thing at another section, only to need to backtrack to the other side is annoying for the most part, especially when you need to swim a lot. but also one of the most broken levels in the game where you can pretty much get out of bounds easily and access things early without using other Kongs to get there. I wish there were more sections with the Swordfish, you have this cool transformation, and its very short lived just for one puzzle section. Imagine if you could of gotten to use the Swordfish during the Puffer Fish Boss, that would of been cool to see. Having to jump out the water to hit the stars to turn on the electric towers to zap the puffer fish.
The Mechanical Fish puzzle however, I hate the most, because that one is on a limited timer to get to, so you can jump inside and grab the next Golden Banana to shoot its heart thing, I think that could of been better without timers.
