How to Photograph Airplanes! Big and Small.

In this video I decide to do something different. Take a break from shooting landscapes and get some great shots of some great airplanes. Shooting planes is pretty straight forward but you do need to have a few things sorted out to get good plane photos.
First you need to find out where are the best plane spotting locations at your airport. Vancouver has quite a few of them. Then you need to know what flights are landing and what flights are taking off. Not only that, but you need to know in which direction the flights are coming or going. This is so you can position yourself in the best possible spot to get the best frames possible. For this, I use an app called Flightradar 24 which tells me a lot of details about a flight. I love big planes so I always hunt for those on my app.
The next thing you need is a zoom lens so you can get close to those planes. In this instance, wide shots are no good so you have to have a good zoom lens to fill the frame with those planes.
In terms of camera settings, get your Shutter Speed high so you can freeze the motion of the planes. Prioritize the shutter speed and you're gonna be golden. Also, put your camera on burst mode - highest level possible. You don't have a lot of time to get the shot, so the more chances you get, the better.
Small tip: for added dramatic effect, for the the airplanes that land, try shooting them in the exact moment when their wheels touch the runway. When the wheels hit the asphalt, they create white smoke which makes for an awesome visual in your photo (just like the plane in my thumbnail photo) .
