My grandfather took us to the Tulsa airport in the 50’s. In those days you could walk to a short fence about 50 yards from the parked planes. To a 7 year old boy watching those planes start up was the greatest show on earth.
I used to fly in a DC-6 from Oakland to Honolulu to Kwajalein on business, two 12 hour legs, and was eventually relieved when it was replaced with a 707. Nostalgia is one thing but ... low altitude and turbulence and boredom is another.
It is a perfect video that captures not only the takeoff and landing of the famous reciprocating airliner of the past, but also the inside of the hangar and the view from the cockpit.👏👏👏👍👍👍
Just a wonderful video. Thanks so much for sharing this video with me (I am 68 years old now, and remember 'the last days of propeller commercial airplanes').
As a kid I was lucky to live in New Guinea and flew a lot on DC3s, DC4s and DC6s and once on a Super Constellation , I loved it and even today I am in total awe when I am in a plane , always get a window seat just behind the wings so I can watch what they do 👍
I flew on one in 1959 on the way to New York to go to France with my family.... And as we waited to get on the military green constellation after arriving in New York... about 5:00 a.m.... my older brother was holding up a magazine to me showing me a picture of the first American to reach space John Glenn. Black smoke billowed out of the constellation as an engine started up and I could see it through the window.... My brother teased me about it maybe blowing up in the sky😂😂😂... That's why I remember it to this day... We were on a military transport headed to Frankfurt Germany to meet up with her dad.... And there was stationed near PONTI MUSION.... A little town in the Northeast part of France.... We left 3 years later... And came back on a PAN AM 7O7 which was awesome.
I flew from AVL to EWR on DC6Bs on United in the late 60s several times. Loved the old school feel of them in the last days of commercial piston props.
Viaje en estos aviones los años 1961/62/63/64 . El servicio a bordo era espectacular tanto en alimentación como también la gentileza de la tripulación de cabina . Lan Chile
My first plane ride. 25 minute flight Calgary to Edmonton 1966. Needed a sip of lemonade to pop my ears in the unpressurized cabin. Roughest landing ever. Wobbly sheet metal on the wing.
These Red Bull folks are something else. They have their fingers in auto and bike racing of all types; air races; boat races; etc. But restoring and preserving something as magnificent as this…and flying folks in it too…awesome!👍😁. And it all is due to an energy drink empire. You can’t make this stuff up!!🙂 One question…did these planes have pressurization? I figured they did…the DC-3 didn’t, also the DC-4’s. Just wondering…👍
sharp looking aircraft! Looks much nicer than the ONA one I flew in from NYC in 1959. There is a section of one at the OAK airport museum. I forgot how small they are inside compared to modern jets! The DC6 sounds so much cooler!
I flew on several DC-6 aircraft as a boy back in the 50s. Recently I was in a town 60 miles northeast of Fairbanks, AK and they have a neat DC-6 there on display.
@@alanmiller9681 I flew twice on a DC-6 in 1963 from Phoenix to LA and back. They were still flying short hauls then as well as for charter airlines. As I recall the flights were smooth, quiet and very pleasant. Also used to see the military variant (the C-118) quite frequently back then as we had two air bases then.
The DC-6 is my favorite piston engine plane (I never cared much for jets) It's growling radials sing the best music and ast about 6:17 I just melt in it. The DC-6 was a moneymaker for the airlines and then later for charter airlines and freighters and was relatively trouble free if properly maintained.
PW 2800...magnificent engine. Flew in one 1960 as a kid...and just prior,... DC7, and the 7 was definitely more luxurious, howevah', those engines. 😇Thanks.
The Red Bull DC-6...I believe this one originally belonged to Yugoslav President Josip Broz TITO. I toured his luxury "Blue Train" in the outskirts of Belgrade earlier this summer. He had a penchant for 50's and 60's Cadillacs and Lincolns too. This guy liked classy modes of transportation!
Yes,it belonged to President Tito from 1958 to 1968.After that Tito gave this plane to Zambias President Kaunda. After a few years of using in Zambia it is sold to one south african company.Red Bull bought this plane in South Africa.
I used to work in STL inthe early '80s enjoyed watching Zantop employees (just kids really) bring one over to get fuel. The oil would be dripping from all 4 nacelles and the main wheelwells
I flew the DC6 from 1978 to 1984. I would like to get the chance to talk with these pilots. I was hauling night freight and ours were dirty with lots of oil leaks.
2 & 3 have the hydraulic pumps fitted. You need to start one of these engines first (generally 3 to have the same routine) to have hydraulic pressure to the brakes. Brakes get initially set using an electric auxiliary pump before engine starts. 1 & 4 engines drive the cabin superchargers which provide pressurization for the cabin at higher altitude. Although the cabin superchargers are running with the engines running, the system doesn’t start working until the aircraft lifts off the ground.
When I was in the navy, had about four of these to take care of. Was working on some instrument in the cockpit and I noticed on the co-pilot's glare shield, some one had taped up a frame of a peanuts cartoon. There's Linus running along with a toy airplane saying when he grew up he wanted to be a pilot and then he tripped and fell on his face. From outside the frame one of the other kids was saying , you're too fat, dumb, and stupid to be a pilot, to which he answered, okay, so I'll be a co-pilot.

Kwajalein, haven't heard of that lonely toxic atoll, in awhile.
What a fantastic video. That DC-6 looks brand new and gleaming. And what a backdrop to set it against.Picture perfect.Fabulous.!.
It is a perfect video that captures not only the takeoff and landing of the famous reciprocating airliner of the past, but also the inside of the hangar and the view from the cockpit.👏👏👏👍👍👍
I love the DC-6b. What a gorgeous A/C and beautiful video. I worked on and flew in them in the NAVY (C-118B) and always enjoyed being around them.
Just a wonderful video. Thanks so much for sharing this video with me (I am 68 years old now, and remember 'the last days of propeller commercial airplanes').
That must be some great memories 🙌
there is plenty of commercial props still flying, tons of them
CONGRATS REDBULL........A FANTASTICALLY RESTORED DC6!!!
je viens de le voir a air légend, quel avion , magnifique, merci a toute l'équipe pour ce grand plaisir!!! et merci pour cette belle vidéo.

Oh wow! That must have been such a thrill 💥
My Grandmother called it a "machine." This is a beautiful "machine"! I love the livery and the magnificent engines.
Beautiful airplane, stunning video! Thank you for sharing!
Wow absolutely amazing video! I need to watch it again! 😍✈️👍🏼👏🏼
Superb video. Beautifully done. What a great reminder of seeing DC-6 aircraft taking off and landing when I was a boy. Many thanks.
Da geht einem das Herz auf ❤❤😊❤❤
Video espectacular! Esse avião parece novo. Boas recordações. Jamais voei num desses, porém no DC3 sim.
Fantástico avión!!...privilegiados los que volaron en esta hermosa máquina!!
this is a rare 4k masterpiece with best sound and turning propellers.
Landing smooth as silk. That pilot really knows his stuff!

Ein Traum, diese Bilder!
OUTSTANDING!!!!!! Thanks for sharing.. Marvelous trip!!
Avion magnifique superbe vidéo merci à toute l'équipe!!!!!
The workhorse of the skies till about 1964 when the 727 & DC9 started to replace it. Great video!
They were still used on short hauls for a little longer and then charter airlines bought some. My favorite airplane.
@@muffs55mercury61 Sounds great! My favorite prop will always be the Constellation. On one such flight from NY to LA I met Walt Disney.
Rode on these several times as a kid in the 50s and 60s. Great video!

This plane looks classic and modern at the same time.
I enjoyed my flight in this business-"jet" over the Alps a lot as I knew it would be the treat of a lifetime.
Could remember this from my childhood. Thanks. 🥲🥲🥲🥲
Absolutely beautiful plane
Beautifully restored
One of kind ! You guys do a wonderful job keeping these airplanes flying !
Beautiful! Thank you for sharing!
My first plane ride. 25 minute flight Calgary to Edmonton 1966.

Awesome - beautiful bird
The most beautiful airplane I know

Yes sir 🤙the DC-6B‘s are rocking pressurized cabins!
In the 60s, I took this plane from SF to Vietnam. We did island hopping to get to VN. Coming back, we took a Being 707 to Washington State.
Great video! Wonderful cinematic scenes, great camerawork!
Spectacular. The plane and the photography!
My grandparents flew on those to Europe back in the 50s….😊.
144 spark plugs working perfectly at once.
Very cool thanks, clean video Peace 👀
Thank you for the effort you put into these! All the great angles and the audio is top notch!

Magnificent aircraft and fantastic footage - thank you!
The best twelve minutes on UA-cam.

Everts Air Cargo up there still has four in operation the last I heard.
@@muffs55mercury61 I’ve heard of Everts. This one was at Chena Hot Springs. They even have a well maintained dirt runway.

Fine video about an awesome plane! Last year I saw this DC-6 in Salzburg, Redbull Hangar 7. 😊
Great video, fantastic footage… timeless!
Aaahh, Salzburg!! She`s the crown jewel of Europe, quite simply....
Salzburg? Never heard of it Which countriy is it?
You must be American.

Not necessarily, maybe just someone who finds 'crowing' like that to be bad manners.......

You couldn't ask for a better flight in a DC6!
2 thumbs up. Thanks.
GORGEOUS plane !!! 😊😊 Thank you 👍👍😊
Beautiful work!

Worked on one of these for three years in the USAF. I believe that I could still start the engines.
Fukkin' sweet !
perfect airplaine. takes a wile but..... all right.
Flew and worked slots on these while in the service. We called them the C-118.

Way, way cool!!!
Absolutely perfect video, now we need the same video also with the Alpha Jet and the P 51 please especially the cockpit view
Copy that 🤙
Beautiful planes God bless you and protect you ❤❤❤❤❤❤
I was constructed in the same year. She is in much more elegant condition than I.
Nice presentation of a well engineered and cared for plane
I made my first ever flight in one of these, from Stanleyville to Brussel. Took a whole day, with two stops to refuel :-)
Magnifique avion
We used to drive out to Willow Run and watch airplanes close up .
Like 👍 Thank You.
One beautiful aircraft!! 👍👍😍
What a beautiful airplane
The most beautiful thing I've seen today 😍
man they don't make em like they used to...what a classy old bird she is!
beauty
RedBull own several vintage aircraft. This is one of them in their Hanger7.
I used to work in STL inthe early '80s enjoyed watching Zantop employees (just kids really) bring one over to get fuel. The oil would be dripping from all 4 nacelles and the main wheelwells
I flew on one from Mexico City to Acapulco in 1967.
Amazing vid 😊😊😊

Beautiful airplane.
Beautiful aircraft
My first trip on an airplane was in a DC-6.
What was the location that was filmed on???
Was that Oakland california?... It's so beautiful.
That is filmed at Red Bull Hangar-7 in Salzburg, Austria
WOW... Thank you that is so beautiful
Nice 😍
My first ever flight in 1961. DC6
Beautiful airplane. I noticed that they didn't use spoilers on landing. Curious.
Wild surroundings too..
Where does the action is taking place please ?
Was the cabin fully restored as well?
Absolutely 🙌
❤❤❤❤❤
All I remember about my DC flights was the noise and rattles in the passenger compartment. Admittedly this was at the very end of their service life.
I flew the DC6 from 1978 to 1984. I would like to get the chance to talk with these pilots. I was hauling night freight and ours were dirty with lots of oil leaks.
Anyone know why the engine startup order is 3-4-2-1? Just curious.
