The black gtr32 from Auto Pro had a great sound. Also the BYP Integra. Most of the cars do not have a great exhaust noise bc of Turbo. NA still has the best sound.
This is why wheel to wheel racing is so boring, the rulebooks are strangling the sport out of existence. It’s probaby why Time Attack and drifting have gotten so popular, you can still see a wild mix of crazy cars that make a lot of noise and are fun to watch regardless. Imagine a sprint race with cars like these and the drivers to push them to the limit, that would be absolutely bad ass
1) I mean, this is the unlimited class, the majority have pretty strict rules 2) I dont believe strict rules (for the build) have anything to do with the racing having action. For instance karting is very strict and very action packed. It's the significance of aero that makes modern racing boring, these cars would be awful to watch wheel to wheel because of it. 3) it's likely gotten so popular because its low barrier to entry and DIY

Honestly, I enjoy time attack every bit as much as "door-to-door" or "wheel-to-wheel" racing... just driver, car, track, and the clock.
