  • The new BMW i4 is available in RWD or dual-motor AWD. Today, we test the purist special: the 2022 i4 eDrive40, which has a single motor on the rear axle making 240kW of power (321hp). It promises a huge WLTP range of 590km and can charge quickly at 200kW. So, is this the electric fighter to take on the Tesla Model 3, which is Australia’s favourite EV by far? Let’s find out!
    The i4 eDrive40 costs $99,900 while the dual-motor AWD i4 M50 costs $124,900. Most Australians so far have ordered the M50.

    From the video it appears to be an non M Sport and in the next it has '///m' on the side. I ask because I have heard the M Sport package toughens up the suspension by 25% and you get a harder ride. In Australia the 'M Sport Package Pro' is $6,846 (as at Nov 2023). Looking good BMW. Now, not blaming Chargefox (lots of blame to governments here and overseas), but if you live in country Victoria, forget it for a free charge. Want to go from Melbourne to Mildura? Recharge in Horsham and then carefully, you might make Mildura - where there is no Chargefox. From where I live, its about a 120 klm round trip to get a free charge. There is only 2 Chargefox west of Melbourne (after Geelong). Ballarat and Horsham and that's it. No wonder people still have range anxiety. (Again, I am just talking about getting your 5 yr free charging with Chargefox which would be nice to use up).

    Hi Tom nice review as always. I would like to know what is BMW recommended policy for battery longevity? You stated that you can potentially achieve over 500km of range if you charge the vehicle to 100% and discharge to 0. As a Tesla M3 LR owner I am very aware that in my car with its battery chemistry that charging above 90% and discharging below 20% regularly and along with fast charger networks may effect it’s long term durability/range. I have always enjoyed Chasing Cars unbiased objective evaluations and I believe your readers should be made aware of a cars limitations and EV’s are no different. Potential owners need to be made aware of these limitations if indeed they do exist.

    • @chasingcars
      @chasingcars  2 роки тому +6

      Well, you probably wouldn’t be doing that regularly, right? Once or twice a year on a road trip maybe. Degradation would be negligible

    • @marklittlely563
      @marklittlely563 2 роки тому +5

      My point still stands, when i purchased our Tesla it was made very clear to me that overcharging/ discharging was not good for the battery health. I therefore would seek clarification from BMW and indeed from Chasing Cars if this applies to the i4. Maintaining your battery is a vital part of EV ownership and this should be relayed to potential owners.

      The model 3 long range is 82k and the i4 edrive40 is 99k. However, I could see why someone would go with a standard range model 3over an i40 in Aus. That's a pretty big price difference even if you just lose 40 miles of range but real world wise the comparison should be model 3 long range vs bmw i4 edrive 40.
      FYI, in the states a BMW i4 edrive40 starts at 55k while a Tesla Model 3 long range is 59k (that's without autopilot). It starts going heavily towards the BMW side of things once you include the federal tax rebate of $7,500. We drove the Model 3 RWD last week and the family was impressed. Overall, it drives every bit as good as the G80 330i if not better.
    Being a dedicated electric platform, the Model 3 is more efficient and better packaged. Carwow did a comparison recently between Model 3 P and M50. The BMW's real world range is disappointing despite having a large battery.
