    Question to Nic. At around 7.20. If you had a hammer, would you hammer in the morning? Would you hammer in the evening? All over this land?

      Propane or butane would be fine, I use propane.. Oxy / Fuel or Mapp would as well but would be much more expensive to run .

      It depends what type of blades you want to make, I found Alexander Weygers - the complete modern blacksmith helpful as it was aimed towards woodcarving tools

      I do have considered selling them but they are very fragile and would need very careful packing to make sure they arrive intact. For now I'll leave those sales to people set up for that sort of shipping.

    would it be possible to use the thermocouple in a charcoal forge?

    • @Zedoutdoors
      @Zedoutdoors  8 місяців тому

      Thank you so much Vicky, if you get the metal thermocouple from 'Hewn & Hone' then yes it should be fine in a charcoal forge ~Peace~

    • @nicwestermann4206
      @nicwestermann4206 8 місяців тому

      Yes it will work, but its better to use a baffle in the forge and put the thermocouple in that. Both are on the H&H site

    Shouldn't à mask to protect from the insulation dust be worn.
    Some insulation is dangerous as for cancer. I'd have on my mask.
    What's the size of the large bricks.

    • @Zedoutdoors
      @Zedoutdoors  8 місяців тому

      Hi John, Nic usually wears a mask when doing this and the only reason he didn't in this video was to able to speak while filming ~Peace~

    • @nicwestermann4206
      @nicwestermann4206 8 місяців тому +1

      As Zed says, I wear masks for most of my working day, virtually all dust is potentially bad for your health. These bricks though are alumina silicate and don't contain ceramic fibres like some insulation materials, so are as far as I am aware not something that needs extra precautions.

    Thanks for doing these videos they are fantastic. I would like to have a go at making a forge as I want to try making some hook tools and possibly a sloyd knife - I have a propane cylinder and reg but don’t have a propane torch any suggestions of what would be the cheapest thing that would do the trick? Thanks for any advice

    Thanks zed and nick for the videos. Ihave a question for Nick: Is the placement of the burner / injector a tangential in the video. So the flame hits the top of the forge first? Would you recommend this also for larger cylindrical forges? What other angles do you find suitable to get even heat distribution and to avoid cold and hot spots?

    • @Zedoutdoors
      @Zedoutdoors  8 місяців тому

      Thank you for your kind words and to hear you found this video useful ~Peace~

    • @nicwestermann4206
      @nicwestermann4206 8 місяців тому

      It's not quite at a tangent, but it's approaching it, so the flame wraps ( spirals ) around the chamber.
      I do all this by eye as to some extent the velocity of the flame will affect the optimal angle. You can always tweak the entry hole as I did.
