  • Horses need food in their system most of the day but unfortunately many places do NOT provide that for them. This is definitely one of the major causes of problems with horses, even death due to "colic".

    We have big cubic metres haystations with frames on them. In the frames are nets that are not tight, so they can browse.
    I like these better than nets because it slows down the eating without frustration, and because the healthiest way for a horse to eat is from the ground and this way they can eat from a lower place than from hanging nets

    This is a really good explanation for colic! I've always found it hard to explain to people I think its just because there are so many variations of colic a horse can suffer from and I over explain and it gets confusing. Next time someone asks me what horse colic is and how horses get it I am going to send them this video!

    Thank you so much for your video. I’m constantly fighting with the barn owners at my barn cause they’re idiots. They literally know nothing about horses. Most of the horses at the barn got colic last year cause they got only 3 flakes a day and no turnout. They blamed the hay so they started feeding 1 flake in the morning and one at night and they also gave them like a cup of bad quality grain. Horses shouldn’t even be eating processed grain. Of course no turnout. Their exercise was being ridden. Of course we ended up losing a great horse to colic too. And this year, we’re still struggling with colic but the barn owners refuse to see the truth. Your video is very helpful so thank you and thank you for caring so much about horses.

    Unfortunately this is tough on horses who can’t eat hay due to worn down teeth and are on cube meals. Also in a boarding situation where we can’t go in the middle of the night to give him another meal. If he was with me, of course it would be much easier to give several smaller meals during the day and late night :(

    We also feed with haynets, we got them because the horses would spread around the hay and trample/ poo on it. In the nets it stays clean. Then we read the book "Paddock Paradise" and a huge lightbulb went on😂

    Not all haynets are created equal. It looks like you have slow feed with small aperture openings. Other haynets have extremely large openings which is not much better than chucking the hay on the ground. The slow feed haynets allow horses to eat the same amount of hay at a much slower rate and they really reduce waste. It will take my horses 6 hours or more to eat the same amount they'd hoover up in an hour without a slowfeed.

    What are your feelings around tooth damage and back problems from using hay bags?

    • @StableHorseTraining
      @StableHorseTraining  7 місяців тому +1

      Completely unproven. There's one video out there claiming it happens and it's based on poorly placed haybags. So.. nope. Tooth "damage" is much more prevalent in the wild and more natural environments for horses, hence the lack of need for yearly dental work, unlike domestic horses that just eat soft pudding all day every day (think of soft hay, soft grass and soft grains etc as "pudding"). Domestic horses actually could use more wear and tear.
      That said, slow feeders with hard plastic or metal used in them are truly detrimental to horses' teeth and should be banned.

    • @StableHorseTraining
      @StableHorseTraining  4 місяці тому

      I don't understand.. you think they are going less or more hours? Horses that are stalled that have hay dropped on the ground at 6am, will eat until MAYBE 8am and then their next meal is at 6pm. This is fact. I've seen it done and know people that do this personally. More and more people are using haybags, but this is the norm in the horse world where stalling all day and night long is the norm.
