Well, no one is going to talk about "Austro-Hungarian racing" because between WWI, the Treaty of Trianon, Kun's Red Terror, WWII and the assorted Communist regimes, very few racing TB's survived slaughter let alone being able to race. Horse racing was considered elitest and race courses, stables and written records were routinely destroyed. I found this out first hand when I went to Hungary during the time of the "Hungarian Peoples Republic" (and don't think THAT wasn't scary at times). Yet monuments to Kincsem and streets bearing her name.survived: Even Kruschev couldn't overcome her legend. My escort told me that Kincsem was to be celebrated as a victim of Capitalist Exploitation. @@melisor9894 We can certainly agree to disagree. Since this was a top 10, I don't think even world-wide Kincsem could truly make it based on my views. It is very amazing you went to Hungary and that Kincsem is so revered there. To wit, do you know about Billy Barton? Maybe not. Laurel has a statue of him outside the grandstand, and he is buried on his owner's estate around the corner from me. For some he was a big deal, going to the Grand National 2x and winning alot in steeplechasing. Yet most don't know who he is. He is not even in the Hall of Fame here. Legend? Who knows. Perhaps a local legend, but maybe not on the scale of Battleship or Lonesome Glory. Back to this list, some I cannot believe are not on there (Phar Lap), and others, why (War Admiral)? Oh wait - famous. That is the only word. Or iconic. From that standpoint, yes, I could see Kincsem making it. (Still don't think WA would be on top 10 "famous" lists in 2024.)
Part of determining the greatness of race horses is the number of great horses they produce. In that regard few exceed Man O’ War and Dust Commander. I might be mistaken but I believe Dust Commander is considered the greatest sire of champions of any other race horse.
Do you mean to call Phar Lap an IT also? If you are referring to Top 10 status then this is nothing but Phar Lap hysteria, Just because they wrote a book and made a movie about him doesn't put him in the top 10. Aussie racing and 1 race in Tijuana Mexico were not the toughest venues to race in in the late 20's early 30's
No problem with Secretariat being #1 the greatest filly of all time Ruffian should be next was never headed in a race and was in front when tragedy struck in the match race vs Foolish Pleasure besides being the great Filly of all time she also was one of the greatest thoroughbreds of all time male or female
Ok I HAVE to make a correction to what all this is. Man o’ War was a whole world faster than the horses around him. His stride length was the longest ever recorded among thoroughbreds TO THIS DAY. He was also wildly popular, even among the people who had never seen a race before. Man o’ War SHOULD NOT be third. In my opinion, even 2nd is a wild understatement. But, then again, this is just my opinion. Everyone is allowed to have their own. Also-Red rum as 4th??? What is this….I don’t own horses. Compared to people who do, I know little about them. But looking at EVERY SINGLE ranking of racehorses on google, NOTHING mentions him as even IN the top 10 of thoroughbreds. *me realizing this video was about popularity not stats* 😢😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
They were of course the 3 foundation stallions for the TB. But this nonsense omits the likes of ECLIPSE, who is possibly THE most influential TB of them all.
The title is pretty broad, so I guess you could be correct. Heck, it doesn’t say “thoroughbred” or “racehorse”, so it could be Justin Morgan, or Dan Patch, or Trigger.
Came here to say this. The blood of one or more of these three runs in every thoroughbred who ever lived. Without them, none of these ten would exist. The Godolphin Arabian’s story alone is fascinating, and documented in Marguerite Henry’s historical-fiction book, ‘King of the Wind’.
As far as conformation goes, Buckpasser without a doubt had the best conformation of any thoroughbred to set foot on a track . Affirmed and Secratariat were the closest to him .
Steroids can win Triple Crowns, just ask BB. Steroids can win Olympic Gold, just ask the 1972 East German Olympic Team that finished an amazing 3rd overall at the 1972 Munich Olympics. The East German trans/female swim team won 11 of 13 gold medals before being disqualified of It's(sic) Medals.
I've heard of man o' war and red rum, a lot of people would know sea biscuit because of the movie. but my favorite and truly famous horse would be 'Phar lap' from New Zealand and Australia. A New Zealand horse saved by the Australians before he was sent to the slaughter house and became a true legend throughout Australasian.
@@tukougly181 Well first off, as I realized down-threads, it's "iconic" or "famous", not truly great. If it was "great", no way would I have Seabiscuit on there. Famous, very much so, yes. 2nd, I think Aus is top racing. 3rd, I agree, 1 race at Tijuana was NOT a big harbinger of how good Phar Lap was vs. best American horses. None of even close to best American horses were there. it was a new race, new track, so the "track record" wasn't a big deal.
Black Caviar and Winx are both mares. How disrespectful for the female equine athletes, who are just as great, if not better, than their male counterparts. (Jan Griffiths).
The fantastic horse Beautiful Jim Key!!! What a wonderful horse and his owner!! What a true feel good story especially for Black history month!! Check it out!!
What really sets Man O’War apart was his incredible record-setting ability. As a 3yo he set records including world records (3) in 73% of the races. He was the first horse to be on the American record list 3x simultaneously, and that year ended up being on it 5x, unprecedented. Likely only rivaled by Swaps (yes, NOT Secretariat).
War Admiral was black (or at least seal brown) not bay. Pretty sure this isn't him. Citation's trainer: "Citation has to be great for two minutes. Wing Commander has to be great for an hour." (Something like that.) Look him up

You forgot to mention Secretariat’s track record at the Belmont 2:24 and the fact that his jockey, Ronnie Turcotte barely used his whip in any of their races. Also, the reason for his speed and stamina was the size of his heart which weighed approximately 22 pounds or 9.97 kilograms.( no one knows exactly how much his heart actually weighs because they couldn’t bring themselves to remove it from the champion) Disney also made a movie about him in 2010. I know all about this horse so don’t get any facts wrong.
An interesting if somewhat biased compilation of famous Race Horses, but with glaring omissions, such as "Shergar" and "Phar Lap" both mentioned in the comments here. Surely one of the most unforgivable omissions however, was the legendary "Nijinsky" who not only astounded the world with his brilliance on the track, but also passed on that brilliance to many of his progeny, many of whom went on to have eminent track victories, but were also successful at stud. These victories earned "NIJINSKI" the Very Rare Accolade of being named as " SIRE of SIRES"..!!

Okay, whatever. If that is not lasting fame in the face of rewritten history, what is?
I truly believe that had it not been for Charles Hancock Reed (may he rest in peace and sing with the angels) and "Operation Cowboy," not only the Lippizan but many other Polish and Central European bloodlines would have been lost. As a native Californian, I take a modest pride in my states' providing refuge for many of those horses at Kellogg Ranch, Cal Poly Pomona and Camp Pendleton.
Kudos on your loyalty to Maryland Racing. I was enthralled by "Thoroughbred" the series about Bonita Farms and it's adaptation to changing times.
Given the subject of your presentation, most famous horses, and iconic horses, I humbly submit that Kincsem deserves a place on the list.
@@theOlLineRebel
Can't believe you referred to Black Caviar as an "it". And left out Phar Lap.
Black Caviar is also a mare, not an IT.
Yes! the stallions and gelding on this list are all he, his, him. Black Caviar is an "it" and Winx is apparently transgender!
It would appear that way lol!@@Boospoochie
Wow, THERE ALL GREAT HORSES! John P.
No problem with Secretariat being #1 the greatest filly of all time Ruffian should be next was never headed in a race and was in front when tragedy struck in the match race vs Foolish Pleasure besides being the great Filly of all time she also was one of the greatest thoroughbreds of all time male or female
Get your facts straight Winx was a female buddy
He don't know what he talking about
Let's not forget the Godolphin Arabian.
What about DESSERT ORCHID A LEGEND ❤❤XX
A video about historic horses should be about history not just racing
Well said
Ok I HAVE to make a correction to what all this is.
Agree Man O War it 1st.
Not just racing record. But his "get" went on to be champions.
Others lacked in the breeding shed.
Secretariat, Seabiscuit, and War Admiral was related to Man O’ War all great race horses
1975 1976 Redrum finished 2nd in the Grand National, making her achievement even more unsurpassable
He, he was a gelding
Winx is a mare!!
Winx is a mare
Don’t you wonder how they can mess that up saying Winx is a male
Well, still a horse,.... And Very Very good 🤔
So was Black Cavier
Awesome race horses
What about Trigger the Famous movie star horse. Trigger also did his own stunts.
Winx is a female
"History" includes the Byerly Turk, Gadolphin Araibian, and Darely Arabian. Clueless
Secretariat reportedly had *perfect* conformation.
Well as close to perfect as possible.
(Spoiler Alert, Spoiler Alert). Secretariat's 1973 Triple Crown was 3 yrs before the 1976 Montreal Olympics. The East German trans/female swim team won 11 of 13 gold medals before being disqualified of It's(sic) Medals.
Are you implying secretariat was given steroids?
I've heard of man o' war and red rum, a lot of people would know sea biscuit because of the movie. but my favorite and truly famous horse would be 'Phar lap' from New Zealand and Australia. A New Zealand horse saved by the Australians before he was sent to the slaughter house and became a true legend throughout Australasian.
Winx is a mare. All credibility gone. Unsubscribed.
Where is ARKLE and WINX that fabulous horse is a mare
What happened to Pharlap
Excellent point. He is a horse who should DEFINITELY be here as “iconic”. Unbelievable some included vs. excluded.
Sorry no one knew his potential as Aussie and Tijuana racing are hardly venues of note. > than 150 on the list
He was poisoned while racing in USA
@@PeterBarrett-s6f Deliberately is not at all proven. And he only raced once in North America - in Mexico. Never got to race IN the US.
Just to clarify, 2 minutes 24 seconds flat is the world record for 1 and half miles on dirt. World record.
Secretariat in 1983
Black Caviar and Winx are both mares. How disrespectful for the female equine athletes, who are just as great, if not better, than their male counterparts. (Jan Griffiths).
Agreed. In sports where animals are the stars the girls are just as good as the fellows. That is where it ends.
The fantastic horse Beautiful Jim Key!!! What a wonderful horse and his owner!! What a true feel good story especially for Black history month!! Check it out!!
And no Zenyatta??!!?? Where did you do your research? Outrage!!
Wing Commander has to be great for an hour." (Something like that.) Look him up
These horses 🐎 that are mentioned in this video were one of a kind and should be recognized with the greatest honor and respect. There are many other horses of a high caliber that should of been on that list and probably even better overall. Your list needs to be revised and give us the names of those horses that also need to be recognized. Know the difference between a She or He. How can you not have Zenyatta on this list ???
And,..... Ruffian, 😏
And call Winx a he? Stupid mistake! 🙄
It’s a 10-horse list, apparently world-wide. I can easily see them all not being on it.
Because they copy and pasted whatever info they found and put it into a bot to read it. They’re lazy and don’t actually have the mind to care about the content they make.
Hall of Fame trainer John Nerud about Zenyatta. She was as good or better then any mare he’d ever seen.
Ruffian
Man o' war its the best horse of the all planet for the last 100 years also many horses by now still carry in his blood mucho macho man macho uno flight line and many 😢
You forgot to mention Secretariat’s track record at the Belmont 2:24 and the fact that his jockey, Ronnie Turcotte barely used his whip in any of their races.
Where is Ruffian?
And Zenyatta 😊
Winx was a she not a he. She was neither transgendered nor confused.
It's rude to call horses "it". And Winx was a female, not a male.
Actually that is proper English. Even racing publications did that, until recently. Animals are generally not treated as humans.
@@theOlLineRebel Horses are different. And i wasn't talking about proper English, but rather good manners and respect. Besides, why can't we give them the courtesy of their genders? If they could talk, I bet they'd do that for us!
@@jimmiemurvin1871 It's not a matter of "manners" or "respect" nor "rude" to use "it" when referring to animals (and they are not different - as a German Shepherd fan, you can't get much better). I myself prefer to state the animals with their sexes, but in grammar it is perfectly correct to simply have them as neutral. Nothing wrong with it. I read ancient DRFs pre-1925 all the time and frequently even those horse lovers and occupationists use neutral. But yes, I myself use "its" sex if I know "it".
WINX IS A MARE
No Slew? No phar lap?😢
Where’s Ruffian??!!😡
Sorry - wrong title. There are brave horses but not the most famous in history. In HISTORY there are horses like Incitatus or Bucephalos far more famous WORDLWIDE.
Asi es, aunque SÓLO se mencionase a caballos de deporte, no sólo hay caballos iconicos en las carreras, también los hay en otras disciplinas (Doma, concurso de saltos...)
Man O War… they really took impressive photos in 1917….
and even in color.
Narrator sounds like he reading from Wikipedia about each horse. Most likely not a true racing fan.
I agree with the comments of others, that the title of this video should be changed! Best Race Horses of all time and I want to ad that Zenyatta should be included!
Why does this film not state that Black Caviar was a mare! She was great horse!
Title should’ve been about horse racing 👎
Wabout Genghis Kahn’s favorite war horse, Dulmukh- who helped conquer China, Emperor Caligula’s prized stallion Incitātus who was made a Roman consul, or General Custer’s Comanche- the ONLY survivor or at the Battle of Little Big Horn? Those horses sound way more historically significant lol
Why no mention of the arabian that made the throughbreds of today? King of the Wind a very good read.
I had that book and adored it! Incredible....the Godolphin is one of the only three pillars of the thoroughbred as we know it today! . The Darley Arabian and Byerley (sp??) Turk are the other two. The blood of these three- all Middle Eastern and arabian- transformed racehorses into the the fleet powerhouses we know today. Sorry if I made some mistakes. Speaking of the book King of the Wind, I had every single book by it's author Marguerite Henry. The illustrations by Walter Farley are simply magnificent!!
Forget Staff Sargent Reckless. She was the most famous horse in the USMC.
Seabiscuit was rode by two Canadian jockeys, Red Pollard and George Woofle. There's a statue of George Woolf riding Seabiscuit in his hometown of Cardston, Alberta, Canada. You also forgot to mention the great Northern Dancer who was the one of the most influential sires of horse racing.
Pharlap was born and started to race in New Zealand and don't forget about Cardigan bay, the New Zealand pacer the first to win one million dollars in stake earnings
Where is Ruffian or Rachel Alexander?

Man O War was exceptional because his "get" went on to become champions.
I disagree he won all but one of his races. He was a phenomenal athlete and his legacy proves his greatness
@@debbijedik6661
What? Do you understand my post?
I stated he was exceptional. Also because he passed his winning gene's to his offspring (get) that's horsemans language.
What are you disagreeing about?
Man o war it's the king 👑 of this sport it's will be never nothing like him
I wonder how this list was compiled, “most FAMOUS.”
Nearco, Ribot, Kincsem, Nijinsky, Shergar, Gladiateur, Al Capone, Arkle
Very incomplete list!
Citation also the Jersey derby between the Preakness and the Belmont , no Yriple Crown winner before or after ever achieved this
No horse is an “it” they are either a he or a she.
Never heard of most of these horses. But where the heck was Ruffian? Or is "racing the last ever match race and nearly could'nt be stopped even with a broken leg + being burried as the first horse ever on the grounds of Belmont Park" not historical enough? Even though her remains have been transfered to Marchmont Cemetery in 2023.
Zenyatta should be on that list 19 straight wins
What about Winning Colors... wasn't she a great horse battling againy the big guys?
And Genuine Risk?

Ive never heard of Winx or Kelso. Nor Frankel,Black Caviar,or Red Rum.
Secretariat's stride was 1 inch short of 25ft. From when his front feet left the ground to when his back feet left the ground.
You're missing Dan Patch. Born: April 29, 1896--Died:July 11, 1916
Dan Patch was a pacer, a horse that pulls his driver in a wagon in harness races. He lost only two heats in his career and never lost a final race. So fast that other owners eventually refused to race their horses against him, Dan Patch spent most of his career running against the clock.
Patch is the only race horse in history to race a train and win.
So glad you mentioned a Standardbred!! I worked in Harness Racing a long time ago. Many LEGENDS in that fraternity!❤
