It felt pretty easy to guess if it was the split humbuckers or the singe coils, even in round 3. Everytime the sound example sounded brighter and more quacky, it was a clear sign that it was the single coils. The split humbuckers are always more warm. By far, I prefer the sound of humbuckers and i'm not the biggest fan of strats but it's clear to me that if you need that quacky sound, you gotta have single coils.

I guessed the pickups correctly, but didn't even try guessing the guitars. I play a Strat that I've modded, including changing the pickups from original single coils, to noiseless stacked single coil sized pickups, and then finally to a regular size humbucker in the bridge, a dual rail single coil sized humbucker in the neck, no middle pickup, tone controls for each pickup and a master volume.
This setup allows me to get hum and noise free sounds, a wide variety of tones, including ones similar to the 2nd and 4th Strat switch positions, and no volume decrease when using the neck pickup when doing wide string bends. I also use an HX Stomp, as that makes emulating different guitars and pickups much more convincing.

Got all correct actually. But I'm also a huge fan of Neck and N+M strat sounds, so those instantly jumped at me.
Pickup position also makes a huge difference. Having then Neck pickup over the 24th fret (with 21+22 fret guitars) changes something in the tone that I can instantly recognize for some reason.
    Awesome comparison btw ❤

  • @YoJimbo0321
    @YoJimbo0321 Рік тому +1

Ironically(?), my takeaway from this is that I don't need a neck humbucker.
After a bunch of research, I've been thinking lately that, in the future, I might want to get a Zexcoil pickup set similar to the set in your Parker Nitefly, but with an HSS configuration rather than HSH.
That way, position 4 would have the least compromise when it comes to having an "authentic" Strat-style sound, and position 2 should still be pretty good in that regard while also offering bridge humbucker tones, since the Zexcoil TriBucker isn't a traditional/"true" splittable humbucker, but rather a humbucker voiced Zexcoil and a single coil voiced Zexcoil slapped together as a single unit.
And, if I still wanted neck humbucker tones, everything I've read/watched suggests that trying to match warmer tones by darkening brighter pickups is a lot more effective than trying to match brighter tones by brightening warmer pickups. I figured that I could probably use amps/plugins/EQ to darken either the neck single coil or the bridge humbucker to get extremely close to that sound if needed, and your conclusions in this video definitely support that.

    My results:
    1HN, 2SN, 3SB, 4HB [not that difficult]
5HN (MC), 6SN, 7HN (DGT), 8HB (DGT), 9SB, 10 HB (MC) [basically I have switched the dgt with the mc, but recognized the single coil vs split humbucker]
11SS2, 12DGT2, 13MC2, 14SS4 [this was a extremely hard round I got right DGT vs MC but switched SS4 with MC2].
Without my headphones, in a live situation i will never be able to detect split humbucker vs real single coil let alone MC vs DGT, this is crazy.

And, as a guy who loves the 4 & 5 (bridge) sounds of a Strat, my one complaint with the Silver Sky SE is that those pickups are nowhere near shrill enough for me. The bridge and middle positions, to my ear, are superior.

  • @normbarrows

One of my current builds has an interchangeable pickup system. While I've gotten gold foils, lipsticks, and p90s for it, I'm using coil split quadrails and humbuckers for the single coil voicing. I suppose I could add a set of single coils, but the guitar only has neck and bridge positions. And the electronics let you mix and match coils from the neck and bridge positions (inner coils, outer coils, etc). That might get close to a Strat bridge+middle or a middle+neck sound. I don't know for sure, I've never had or even played a guitar that can mix coils. And I've been playing for 44 years and have 92 guitars!

ive noticed a few simillar comments so i guess maybe some peoples ears are more trained to it if they havent had consistent first hand access to humbuckers.
the best way for me to describe it is when people say about the glassey strat tone . in your video thats what i was hearing and made me able to pick out the single coils without even trying,

I must admit that culling down even a small guitar collection means less multiple old rustng string changes at the least and less basic instrument maintenance too which means more free playing time. Leaving guitars unplayed for many months can cause strange things to happen to your neck and maybe tuners too from what i've read plus digging out and rotating guitars in and out of gig bags from the closet is just one more a back pain causing chore to me.

Love the comparison and each new video makes me want an SE even more.
One critique though - I don't think this test going straight into the amp is the best way to test. We all play with some amount of gain and compression and in my experience those accentuate the sound of the pickups, better highlighting the differences. I think doing this with a boost or transparent overdrive between the amp and guitar could make it differences more apparent. 🤷‍♂

To my ears the split pickups on my S2 594 don't sound like a "real" single coil. The splits on my SE 24-08 are closer, probably close enough to use in a pinch. This may not be because of the pickups because they are probably really similar. Could be due to the 594 scale length and tuna bridge. Maybe it is all in my head and is due to feel and not actually tone.

1 and 2 were easy. You just listen to low mids and top end chime. More low mids humbucker, more chime single coil. Round 3 much more difficult. I had to listen carefully twice before I could be pretty sure. But you just have to listen to the high mids in good but familiar headphones and then it becomes easier. Not saying I would get them right every time - definitely not - but humbucker bridge high mids are often honky and a touch veiled, even if bright and low output or wide range humbuckers they still sound like they are pushing through a low pass filter. They are not naturally extended like single coils. Compare 14 vs 13 and you'll hear what I mean about extended. That said strat style guitars have a percussive neck pickup which is a tell and if they have a tone knob wired to bridge and rolled back it's going to be way harder to tell there. But I think once you move away from 250k pots in Strats and Teles toward 1 megaohm pots in Jazzmasters and Jaguars, it becomes really obvious because they are even more extended in the top end. You really have to add a lot of gain before it becomes hard to tell. But I think it's better to think about what a guitar offers in a certain position. Like if you want the quack in 2 and 4, or the tight percussive neck on strat, clear but full middle position on jazzmaster, twang on tele, or the Gretsch tone - no PRS is ever going to cop a Gretsch hollow body tone. And that's a good thing.

I wonder if you were comparing the Silver Sky with the NF3 SE with the NF3's volume backed off just a tad, if you did a test between the two in all positions, if a person could pick out which is which...Now in regard to different guitars in recording, and how one guitar fits into a particular mix compared to another on the same mix of a track, my guess is that, depending on the track, a person would pick a specific one over any of the other options, because in that particular song, one just achieves what a person is looking for in the particular song better than what the others achieve...but that is just a guess, and that is not to say the others wouldn't sound just fine in the track; it would be that the one just sounds better in the track vs the others from the artist's perspective.I didn't do the test, because I don't own any of those guitars...

Hey! Did you sell your Bedford Bob Weir? Don't see it.. BTW, really dislike not knowing which is which until later. I can't evaluate like that. But maybe I'm the only one.
    Best Regards and Best Wishes!

I don't have a wife anymore. Her exit had little to do with guitars and more to do with she couldn't stand the sight of me. It's been thirteen years, and she still can't abide anything to do with me. I'd be bitter, but I have eighteen guitars now. I'm mollified for the most part.
You pick up the guitar thinking you're going to score chicks, but instead, you wind up with a room full of middle-aged men chatting about your nails.
The brotherhood (and let's face it: it's mostly guys. Women are more than welcome, but they are bound to be outnumbered.) of guitar is a splendid cast of characters, and I would be devastated to leave it.
That aside, PRS is going to be a finicky comparison. Paul has been quoted in public about how his humbuckers are designed to mimic single coils. The DGT and Miles Kennedy are quite explicit in this regard.
Even so, I could take your P-38 and give you a very wide pallette that would put all these in an opulent corner. A pickup swap would be in order, plus the Seymour Duncan Superswitch, but I can promise a satisfying experience. The warning I will give at the beginning is I have better wiring in my house than yours.

I currently want to buy a couple guitars because I have pickups that could be put in them.
    The brain worms go deep.

out of curiosity which guitar and pickup setting did you use to set up the amp sound?

Yeah I think pickup sounds are kind of overrated as a thing to think about when buying a guitar. When I go shopping plugging the guitar in is the last thing I bother with… if it doesn’t feel right in my hands and I don’t like playing it I don’t care what it sounds like through an amp because I’m not going to buy it.

My wife only cares about making sure there's enough room for another guitar, otherwise she doesn't care how many I have. One of the benefits of moving to a digital rig is getting rid of amps to make space for more guitars... 🤣

I'm wondering: would an overdrive pedal make the differences more or less apparent?
That might make for an interesting part two of this video.
Because justifying the purchase of overdrive pedals is another reason why we all lie to our wives.
    "But... this one has germanium!"

It's better to have 20 guitars and only need 1 than to need 20 guitars and only have 1. 😂

I love those push pull knobs. Maybe let you own less guitars. Maybe.

We need to have different guitars because they make us happy. As long as you're not spending the baby's diaper money on guitars then you're good.......also true: I am not a financial advisor 😂
