I am a free style beginner. Every day in the pool I drill for body position, rotation, catch, and breathing. I pay attention to my muscle tenseness, listen for noise, and manage fear. There is so much to get into subconscious and to make everything work together. Only recently I become patient with practice drills. Even though I can manage to swim free style without aides, I’d better spend time and energy doing drills until all your points become a part of me.

I recently moved to the desert and am able to swim every day. I love it so much and was hoping to learn more about how to swim more efficiently and faster (I'm up to half a mile) This is a wonderful video and I'm sure I'll be able to correct my inefficient strokes as well as my head position now. I read a book years ago and my stroke is based on that, which is completely the opposite of what you describe, plus I'm sure I'm taking my head to far out of the water when I'm breathing. Thank you!

I only learnt to swim as an adult 20 yrs ago and I'm not confident being in the water. Getting back into it to get fitter as I'm very overweight but can't afford coaching. This is helping me so much. I practise at home and run it though my head so when I get to the pool I have a head start. It's really increased my comfort level in the water.

I am coming from running. Swimming is soo different but I'm excited after my first week of getting in the pool! I learn something new every time I go in. Teaching myself by watching the other swimmers and these amazing videos. The hardest for me was getting into a breathing rhythm since for running I was taught to breathe in through your nose and out through your mouth- here's it's the complete opposite! The endorphins I missed so much from running are coming back. Anyone else?

When you reach, the trunk rotation will passively (keep the contralateral arm quiet) put the contra elbow in an elevated position, and the forearm will drop perpendicularly, setting up the EVF. Then pull/adduct (to the trunk) the elbow until the forearm is perpendicular to the trunk (using the whole arm surface to pull) before completing the stroke. see 4.05 to 4.08

Chances are low that you will read this, but I wanted to say thank you. I'm a pretty novice swimmer (have been able to swim my whole life, but working on technique for the last year) but have been trying to increase my distance to a mile nonstop. My lower back was starting to ache so I looked it up on youtube and realized it was most likely my head position and core. Those videos led me to this video. I did what you said, totally ignored my kick for the time being, only focusing on straightening my catch, let my hips drive rotation and exaggerate my downward head position. I felt like a toddler in the pool, since I was focusing on these improvements and had made my previous mistaken form pretty smooth BUT! I instantly dropped almost 10 seconds off my 100 yd intervals!! I went from 2:15 to 2:00!! This is huge as I'm not trying to get faster, but trying to work hard on endurance. It's obvious that you have increased my efficiency a ton since I feel less smooth in the water but I'm actually faster. Also, my swolf was plateaued at 47 for months no matter what I tried. It instantly dropped to 44. I know these numbers aren't great swimmer-wise, but they are amazing for me! I know that the smooth, efficient feel of my stroke will come as I keep focusing on the basics. Thank you!!

The best technical explanation video I have ever seen. I already used 60% of these suggestions like hearing to the sound of the water, but I would like to add something about breathing "5:11 in the video" (sorry for my "English"). The water line while you are turning for breathing is not straight. The right position of the head generate a "bow wave", like ships do. The wave is easy to see at 5:58 of the video. The bow pulling the water creates a front wave on the very begin, the wave decrease immediately after. The line of the water surface gets a form like a 90° right turned "S". Where the water turns below the neutral horizontal line, there is the place where you can breath easily. One eye stays underwater because of the first part of the wave, but the mouth is completely outside the water because of the second part of the wave.

    Nice summary.
If one wears Magic5 goggles with their angled lenses, then one can hold a better/level head position and still see a bit in front of you. Not so boring.
Also, there are two purposes for kicking, leverage and propulsion. Depending on the stroke tempo, one dominates the other and the leg mechanics differ. Predominently hip and ankle(think flipping the foot) driven for hip rotation(distance swimming) v predominately knee driven for propulsion(sprinting).
The forearm catch. Another way to think of getting the forearm into position is to imagine pushing your elbow out as your hand drops during the catch. This outward from the body movement automatically drops the forearm into place faster and with less strain on the shoulder than trying to rotate the hand down into position. Weird, but it works. Also, it creates space to move the arm down the length of the body with less interference potential during hip rotation.
