  • Over 50 Female First Timer Bodybuilding Competition. Choosing A Federation & Category, My Story. In this video I tell my story of the challenges I faced with choosing the right federation and category for me and how my challenges helped me to grow stronger and reach my goals of winning a bodybuilding competition at the age of 53. I’m Rae Bright and I hope my story will help other women in their 50s who are also first time competitors to navigate your way through the different federations and categories and live your dreams.

Thank you for sharing your story, Rae. You said your coach added exercises to your programming to fill the loose skin on your glutes. I would love to know what exercises and how they were programmed. Your physique is truly stunning.

Hi Juley! Lovely to hear from you and thanks for your kind words. The exercise that worked for me was RDLs and I did them pretty much every time I went to the gym. Many reps and sets. Strict form, really focus on mind muscle connection 🍑 One other exercise I used a lot was high step ups. Really focusing on using the working leg to push up from, not allowing the other leg to push you up with momentum. I did need assistance from my husband holding my hands when I did these but I found them very effective 😄

Fabulous video Rae......very interesting story! You look amazing and to me your glutes look great! (Better than 1st and 2nd IMO) What a rollercoaster of emotions you must of gone through 😥.....but to then to go on to win a category you did not enter.....that’s an achievement and very inspirational! Lucky you had a figure suit and some knowledge of figure posing! A similar thing happened to Kim Constable(the sculpted vegan)....She trained for masters bikini and whilst on stage...the judges deliberated on whether she should be moved up to toned figure. They decided to let her stay in bikini in which she eventually won. She said she was so panicked as she knew nothing about toned figure!
This has motivated my interest again......this latest lockdown has really halted my goals and has sabotaged my positive mindset. I have limited equipment at home but do what I can when I can motivate myself!
I competed back in 1996 in three competitions.....2x figure fitness and the miss fitness UK. Now, also a fifty something menopausal woman want to compete again but sadly due to injuries don’t want to risk fitness (and due to the fact this category is now very different as far as the physique requirements go).....so decided on masters figure. I have chosen to go with UKDFBA and hoped to complete in September but due to the pandemic (no gyms) I won’t have enough time to build enough muscle. This has been put on hold until 2022 but I’m still itching to compete so I’m considering bikini. Sadly this federation doesn’t have a masters bikini category so would be competing against 20 somethings which is daunting. Also, I find the posing very difficult and not natural to me and unfortunately I’m not in a position to hire a coach.
I also have work to do on glutes and being a natural apple shape I don’t have a naturally small waist☹️. So, I will see how the rest of the year pans out.
I look forward to following the rest of your journey and wish you the best success!😊
    Sorry for long comment😶

Thanks for sharing your story Sonja, and can I just say wow to competing in the Fitness category! Ah I did consider the UKDFBA but decided on the BNBF and planned to compete last year but likewise covid put a stop to this. I went to one of their free posing workshops just before lockdown and they offered such great advice. I was told I would do well in either their Figure or Athletic category. But like you I am more focused on the Masters and the Athletic is an open class. It sounds like a free posing workshop would be perfect for you so consider choosing a federation that offers this (when normality returns). I learnt some useful posing tips so will have a think to see if they could make a useful video! In the meantime keep doing bodyweight workouts and resistance band workouts too if you can. You can achieve so much even without the weights, just remember mind muscle connection and good form. Let me know of any workouts you would like to see from me to help 🥰

Hey thanks for watching! I take HRT, it has so many benefits. My first symptom was hot flushes and in the gym it was challenging. The first day I took it my hot flushes stopped. I am an advocate for HRT 💜 I talk about it in this radio interview ua-cam.com/video/n7vkctfWCUM/v-deo.htmlsi=lQmGhnjCIvMP8QGX

What lifts did you end up doing to smooth out glute loose skin. My legs are also the problem area for me. I can get lean and still have fatty legs and at 57 my skin is loose

You are speaking the same language as me. I'm lean top half all the time. I hate my legs. I'm feel embarrassed. I have been competing since 2013 and now 47. I think I'm now giving up as only federation worth competing with is IFBB as not much choice here in Australia (I am Scottish). I did Olympia in 2019 which was amazing. I'm glad I have found you on here. Your legs and glutes are incredible. If you have any tips, please help.

Wow Joy, what an incredible bodybuilding career you’ve had! Thank you for stopping by 😍 it sounds like you’re too hard on yourself (as we all are) so I guess my advice would be to have a coach you can trust; eat a clean healthy diet on and off season (limit highly processed foods) and drink plenty of water. For me intermittent fasting and fasted walks worked really well. I trained glutes and legs more and a game changer for my glute development and glute / ham tie in was doing a lot of RDLs! And to get my legs shredded for the stage I had to go to zero carbs and 1200 calories for a couple of weeks but once the fat had gone it stayed off. Post show I was up to eating 3000 calories a day plenty of carbs and stayed lean. The body is incredible at adapting, I learnt so much during this time. You’re only 47 so instead of just giving up why don’t you have a long break from competing. Just enjoy your training and aim to compete in 5-10 years time. Covid messed up my plans and my goal now is not to compete again until I’m 60! Wishing you all the best 💜

@@LiveYourselfYoung Thanks so much for the info regarding your legs. (Same issue for me, although not competing). I’m always worried if I diet too much to lose on legs my top will lose muscle!
