    🔷 ABOUT SAMCRAFT 🔷
    Samcraft is a channel all about educating, inspiring, motivating, encouraging, and sharing the things I've learned since starting my own small business in 2018.
    In today's video I discuss the roof sheathing for my new workshop. I chose to install Georgia-Pacific ForceField Weather Barrier System for my roof. I also chose to pay for professionals to install it. Come with me as I talk about when it makes sense to pay someone to do work for you, the benefits of this roof sheathing product, and show you the results. Let's go!

    You're a very smart man!!! I use to do everything myself, UNTIL i became disabled due to a motorcycle wreck 11 yrs. ago. Now I have to pay people to do for me what I use to rick my neck to save money. My granddad was a all around handyman and started teaching me the trade when I was 8 years old. So now when people come to work for me I tell them up front what I expect for my money. I watch them and I've learned a few things and ways to do somethings that I never thought of and in return I've told them some easier softer ways of doing things. Let me tell you it's nice to just sit back and watch and pass out bottles of water on hot days... LOL...
    Be blessed my friend in Jesus name... BBE..

    Sam, I have to say that from a guy from a family that can’t or will not admit limitations I thank you for what you decided on this. It’s hard to say I can’t or don’t want to accomplish something. True knowledge is key. I feel you could have done it yourself as I can tell you would have figured it out from your other videos. From a safety, and the fact that this was an important step of the building it had to be correct. It’s kinda like electrical and plumbing also. I’m not an electrician but I know what my limitations are. So running wire, boxes, switches, and outlets is fine and I can do, when it comes to your panel box i source advice. Yet on all projects I consult, and plan if I’m not totally comfortable with it. I have to say that we ,as men, can be very stubborn!
    Good job sir!!

    Ok, this is what I expected. I know your "LOVE" of ladders & roof work. No shame in your game, a lot of people are that way. But you couldn't beat the labor quote. Nice that you hired the pros, and got a great deal. Good job, Sam.

  • @stevegood3224
    @stevegood3224 6 місяців тому +1

    Sam. This project is going awesome. The labor you paid for the roof was cheap compared to a fall and trip to the ER. I showed my wife part of the truss install video and she told me to not even think about trying that. I'm 66 and she thinks I'm old. My brain does not think I'm old but she is probably right. These videos are going to be a great help to guys wanting to DIY a shop. I'll probably never build another shop but I have enjoyed watching yours come together. Thanks.

    A wise move in my opinion. You’ve laid a great foundation so far. Certainly you’ve saved yourself enough on your labor to afford a “ splurge “ here and there. Letting someone else do such tasks that are their forte and not yours is a wise move for time economy, safety, quality, and simply a well deserved break. I’m fortunate to be able to let my checkbook be a tool as I age but certainly sweat a lot of like tasks when the money wasn’t there. It’s nice to be able to choose my battles now.
    You’re going to have a nice play house when finished. Makes me want to build a new shop for myself😊

    Hi Sam, glad you provided us with the info on the sheeting for the roof and did the smart thing and had the pro's do the roofing. I don't mind doing it but one slip and you could be laid up for a long while. I plan on building a new workshop in the spring and that will be most likely the sheeting I'll be using. Only makes sense to use it over regular OSB for better insulation. Keep up the good work. I'm learning quite a bit from your videos.

    Like the roof , a friend had there house roofed and they put down a sticky membrane that was a lot like the tape , I was stretchy and very sticky them they installed shingles .... my thinking was this , extra protection would be to use the stretchy rolled stuff over what you have now that would be even more protection and insulation, cause I'm thinking of redoing my roof with the roofing plywood like yours with the rolled out sticky stuff under a metal roof ..... I know it will cost more but in the long run it would be well worth the added price ....... great job you're doing 👏

    I understand the theory of permanent stick tape. Where i live we have sun, roofs get h-o-t hot in the summer. I worry about the tape stickum failing over time. Underlayment that overlaps would be my only choice. For the same cost like you got, I'da used that GP product & tape, then do underlayment over it, then roofing. Just my $.o4 after inflation

    • @jkholley1118
      @jkholley1118 6 місяців тому +1

      29 years as a contractor, I always like to ice and water the entire roof. Melts to the decking and seals around the nails or screws from the roofing. Even if the shingles or metal get blown off or leak the building is protected.

    • @aaronorr5586
      @aaronorr5586 6 місяців тому +1

      The system is very similar to Zip system OSB Sheathing. As long as the barrier is engineered alongside the tape product the heat of summer will not have a debilitate effect on the adhesion.

    • @EngineerMikeF
      @EngineerMikeF 6 місяців тому

      @@aaronorr5586I've heard many zero effect claims on building products since the 70's. Consider that over-sinking nail heads tears holes in the underlayment, and despite claims of bulletproof, waterproof, u.v. resistance, 30yr warranties where the company's assets get acquired 5 years later in a takeover deal but not its liabilities, etc, I think there is a lot if room for scepticism. I see chinesium scholar panels selling today thru door to door salesmen for companies practically guaranteed to be vapor in 5 years but giving solar payback formulae in 25 year Stearns with zero maintenance, breakdowns, or obsolescence. I've had way too much goo on my hands from failed tape to automatically believe claims in tape types & brands I haven't seen in place for 20+ years without degradation. Lap seams rely on gravity which comes with a fairly solid warranty.
      Not trying to start a war here, just my $.o4

Unless, putting insulation on top of force field and opening soffit vent to the roof top and put strapping on top then osb sheathing and t]hen shingles

    I don't blame you for hiring it done. HOWEVER. One thing they did that I don't think they should have and alot of roofers make this mistake. At the top where your ridgevent will go. They closed your risgevent. Now your eoof won't be able to vent that excess heat. I just seen a home in West Virginia that has this done. The Attic was full of Mold after a couple of years.. I would have them remove the tape off of the ridge so the roof can vent

      He mentioned in another comment that they will cut open the ridge to vent when they start the metal roofing.

    This is definitely a great video. Even if someone is capable of doing a project, it may be safer, quicker and cost effective to hire a professional. It’s always good to know your limits

    Are you planning on joining the two buildings together?

      Yes... eventually. :) They will be connected by a "tunnel" -- not a full width connection.

    I didn't even know that sheeting existed. So did they still run 1x4 purlins over the sheeting then installed the metal or did they install the metal right over the sheeting? Really interested in the weather barrier sheeting can handle the metal directly on top of the sheeting. By the way great video thanks again.

      Metal directly on top of the OSB. My current workshop has metal installed right on top of the OSB as well. About two years now and zero issues. :)

    Heck yea, I like to stay off roofs myself. Let someone that does it day in and day out do it for you.

    Build is turning out great! So awesome! Almost there!! How you think a lean to style roof look on this size build? Think they call it flat sloped. Mine is 18x32ish. Thinking it may be easier than building trusses.

      So long as your rafters are large enough it should work fine. I'm not sure the thickness you would need, but would assume around a 2x10 or 2x12 thickness.

    No disappointment at all. It takes a man to admit his limitations and lookout for your safety. Would it be good at this point to have them tie the roofs together of both shops so that is out of the way when you connect them

    • @Samcraftcom
      @Samcraftcom  6 місяців тому +1

      I took at look at this when I designed my workshop and they just didn't line up correct enough for me to feel good about it... too many variables and unknowns to risk the structures. The roof pitches and peak heights are different.

    Sam, I'm curios. Does that roof system add to the R-value? Or is it just foil sided OSB?

    • @Samcraftcom
      @Samcraftcom  6 місяців тому +2

      I don't think it does, it's just a plastic-like membrane that's glued to the wood. Possibly reflective too.

    Good jod Sam. What are your thoughts on using osb that has radiant barrier foil on one side (on a roof & on the exterior wwlls of a house? Thanks

    Don’t blame you one bit I wouldn’t get onto the roof either it would be just my luck I’d slip and fall off and break something plus I’m scared of heights 🙄😊
