An overview of Intercom Ecostick Leather Glue and water-based adhesives and how they compare to solvent-based adhesives like Barge Cement. Use to prep leather, canvas and other fabrics for handmade goods like bags, wallets, belts, key fobs, and leather crafts.
Health Benefits of Water-Based Adhesives:

-When working with solvent based glues and cements (Barge) you should use a ventilation system and wear ventilated masks, particularly when you are in small spaces.
Production Benefits of Water-Based Adhesives:
-(Barge) Solvent glue is ~85% volatile VOC, and only 15% resin (the glue). So 85% evaporates.
-(Intercom) Water based is 50% glue content, and 50% water.
-(Intercom) 3x more concentrated, so you need a lot less. You need to apply a lot of Barge because it is mostly VOC.
-Even though the price of (Intercom) water based is higher, (Barge) Solvent glue is actually more expensive by volume as it is less concentrated and therefore you need more glue during application. And when using a spraying system you can save up to 5x the amount of glue, as spraying is more efficient than hand application.
-(Intercom) Water based can be reheated if dried. See glue descriptions for more info.
-(Intercom) Water based glue does not effect leather grain color.
-(Intercom) Water based keeps the leather flexible and soft, unlike solvent glues that will stiffen leather.
-(Intercom) Water based glue systems require significantly less maintenance.
-The strength of water based glue can be permanent or non-permanent and can reach equal strengths to solvent based glues.

I have been using both for a few years. I think this review is very accurate. The part I think is very accurate is the efficiency part.
The advantage of Barge or VOC based contact cement is that stray glue drops can be easily removed with a piece of crepe. Water based contact cements are NEARLY impossible to remove when dry. Done some tests. Acetone, rubbing alcholol, Neatsfoot oil....none of these will disolve the water based glue when dry. Being very careful with the glue may not always be simple.
I got a tube of the high strength stuff and I'm gonna see how it works on boots. I'm gonna bond the insole, filler, midsole, and outsole with it. Everything will be stitched together as well. I'm done using the toxic glues, not worth it. I hope it's as strong.
I would be super interested to hear your results.... I make pack saddles, saddlebags, panniers etc. and will order some to try as well. Curious to what you think after using it.
@@rachelgerber6729 I'll let you know, but it's gonna be a while. I'm still finishing up the pattern, and I haven't been getting as much done as I'd like. But I mean to have them finished before fall.
I understand! I have made one batch of breast collars with the high strength and was very happy when I finished the edges to see they appeared the same as with barge- after burnishing the edges, it still looks like one piece to the untrained eye. I haven't yet sent them out to the field to see if they hold up to the weather and abuse though. Thanks for the response. @@noone3734
I’d like to see a sided by side test of a multi layer project being separated and which product holds better.
Adhesives and paint products have been moving more and more towards a water base formula.
Personally, after using solvent base paints vs. water base paints.
The application and durability of solvent based paints outshine and last water based paints.
Also everyone I know who paints, whether using solvent or water based.
Use solvent for cleanup?
Lacquer thinner is the go to product for prep and cleanup.

Hi Alyssa, we have not tested this adhesive against the Intercom ecoStick glues just yet so we can't be sure.
@@Buckleguycom Thank you. You may want to do a test at some point given the Aquilim 315 is a highly used permanent, water-based glue for leather. I did just purchase Intercom from you, so curious how it performs. Have a good weekend.

@@Buckleguycom my mistake, when I saw toluene free barge I assumed that it was water based
I have a hard time believing this new Intercom glue is as trustworthy as Barge- I've been using Barge for coming on 40 years and I've never had any issues at all- but that said- proof is in the pudding- do a strength comparison- not just talk but an actual side by side test. Now that would be interesting. Until I see proof that Intercom is as strong and competitively priced I'll stick to Barge.

I would really appreciate including Renia Aquilim 315 Water-Based Contact Adhesive in this comparison. In forums/discussions with other leather workers, they claim this is the best alternative to Barge. Thanks for all the great content and products! @@Buckleguycom
Almost everything you say is environmental stuff. Almost nothing speaks to whether it’s actually any good which leads me to believe that it isn’t better or cheaper. Also, you conducted no test to make your point…. Sorry but I’m not buying it. Literally and figuratively. Reminds me of the asbestos brake pads in cars. They were vastly better than the metallic one that replaced them….
