I know I'm 2 years late, but many of these require you to also (dry) iron the cloth (ie. apply heat) for it to set. It'd explain the glues that barely held anything at all
The real test for fabric glues is not how much force it takes to pull them apart, but rather how they fare with a trip through the washer and dryer. Some fabric glues aren't even machine-washable. Also, as some others have pointed out, you used the glue on the wrong side of the leather.

I think the problem here is that youve put a single dot of glue on a thin sheet and then tried to pull it apart. Not all fabric glue is made for making a hard solid patch between fabrics. For example... you could have tried superglue and it would have been a much stronger connection but the material would have been hard brittle and ruined. Fabric glue like liquid stitch are supposed be used in a line and allow a more flexable less hard, natural movement of the fabric when dried.
"We're going to test it just because I feel like it", that's a great line. Still at the beginning of the vid, but heat those in the drier to really hot, I've found a lot of them fail early after they got hot. Only good for the cotton since the poly will melt.

TYLER THANK YOU FOR ALL OF YOUR CONTENT. I WAS EXCITED TO WATCH THIS VIDEO IN PARTICULAR. I'VE WORKED WITH THESE GLUES, AND MANY MORE, FOR 30+ YEARS. LIKE OTHER COMMENTERS HAVE MENTIONED, CONSUMER GRADE GLUES LIKE THIS ARE MEANT FOR USE WHEN FACTORS SUCH AS TENSION, COMPRESSION, SHEAR, BENDING AND TORSION ARE LIGHT TO MEDIUM. WHERE THEY WILL HOLD UP BETTER WITH SOME OF THOSE FORCES AND NOT OTHERS. I ALWAYS TOLD MY CUSTOMERS THAT USING A FABRIC GLUE IS NOT A LONG TERM SOLUTION AS THEY WILL NOT HOLD UP TO WASHING OR HEAVY USE. MOST CONSUMER GRADE AIR DRY GLUES ARE PVA, POLYETHYLENE, POLYURETHANE AND CYNOACRYLATE, EACH OF THOSE HAVE DIFFERENT PERFORMANCE IN DIFFERENT CIRCUMSTANCES. THE THING ABOUT FABRIC GLUE IS THAT IT MUST BE BOTH FLEXIBLE AND STRONG ENOUGH FOR IT'S INTENDED USE. THE ONE TEST THAT SURPRISED ME WAS THE GORILLA GLUE ON LEATHER. I EXPECTED PRETTY CLOSE RESULTS FOR ALL OF THE GLUES YOU TESTED EXCEPT FOR FABRIC FUSION, FABRIC FUSION IS HIGHLY FLEXIBLE AND DOES NOT HOLD UP TO SHEARING WELL AT ALL. IF YOU EVER REVISIT THIS GLUE TEST I WOULD BE INTERESTED IN SEEING ALL 5 FORCE FACTORS TESTED!
Considering these were 1/4" dots of glue instead of a line across the cross section overall not bad, as primary use would be repairing items without any load bearing , well except for jeans maybe 🤔😁

Depending upon which fabric glue you use and the fabric, some fabric glues are actually meant to aid in sewing, like in a hem. Strength in a lot of fabric glue usages isn't important because you're gonna be sewing right over the glue loint anyways. Look at it this way, when 2 pieces of wood at a corner, you wouldn't just glue it and leave it, you'd glue it then screw it.
Exactly! He didnt research any facts on the product's use at all. Depending on the type, usually, Its meant to dry flexible so you can sew it. Enjoy the laughs on him.
I worked for a general contractor years ago. He swore by ground water setting concrete. He NEVER added water to a post setting claiming it made no difference. I always wondered if that was true. Does the dry concrete inside the post hole set up just as well (or better) than adding water?
Concrete need water to cure, soil contains water, but not as much as adding water inside, it takes ages to cure. When outside is cured, inside is still dry

Interesting. How do each of these glue type samples affect sewing needle (gumming the needle or breaking needle or thread) stitching through the glue if used as temporary seam basting?
Hi Tyler, Like another commenter said, could you try an edge to edge test? Essentially like sewing two pieces together. Moreover, could you also consider doing a wash and dry test? Getting the glued fabric wet and then using heat to dry it? I believe these are more practical tests of the glue strength, since people will want to wash and dry and the fabrics they glue together.
Your gluing videos are awesome. I have seen some pretty strong results here. However your tests are only for the breaking point. What about a sustained weight to these glues? How long can these glues last under certain sustained weight and time? Would love to see a video demonstration on this. You the man Tyler.
You could see how the glues perform after washing. The results could change. Also common uses for this type of product are seams and tears as someone pointed out below. Maybe the rough side of leather too as another pointed out. And try to replicate a seam repair like a 4 inch strip for example.
I use liquid stich to fix my jeans all the time. And it works great! And I usually can wear them after about 2 mins of gluing them. I like the liquid stich because it's flexible. It looks and feels like liquid latex.
glue is not intended to withstand the force direction you used in your test. if you use 2 strips of material and let them overlap in the gluing area, then apply the force you should see much higher values from all 3 of the products. (like you would apply a patch to a ripped trouser) And since its fabric glue, you might want to use it on the coarse side of the leather strips or at least sand the surface.

It would be interesting to see you test glue that people would use for nails, makeup and skin glue. I feel like those types of glue need to be both strong and flexible and it would be interesting to see how they hold up.
I've been sewing for about 20 years and fabric glue has never really been part of my regular equipment. I didn't like the discoloration, but that was back in 2000-ish. If I used it now, I'd only use it for mending holes with a patch. Fray all, overlap and glue. Then sew mending stitches.
I wonder if Tyler knows that kinda glue is made to hold the fabric together before you sew it it's like tack welds for metal the things u learn helping your grama every weekend in summer time
I was watching some of your old videos. The one on where you hooked 500 9v batteries together and shocked hot dogs. Presto makes small appliances. One was called a Hotdogger. It was a tray that you mounted 2to 6 hotdogs in and slid the tray into the lid and plugged it in the wall. The house current electorcuted the hotdogs to cook them. Worked very well. Quick and easy. Not as greasy as frying.
Having repaired a lot of hunting gear with 900D cordura, you should rough up the fabric first. Also, try it with AquaSeal and E6000. I've had good luck with those lasting when fixing layout blinds.
Thank you for showing the whole experience. I know it's hard to cut in a messed-up take of the same glue on two pieces. And I know it makes editing easier, but the fact you bothered to put that in makes you above the rest of folks, homie. 🤙🏾
I think a better test would be to pull the material not in that direction, but across it's surfaces. Because clothes aren't normally pulled in that direction, testing it's strength by peeling them wouldn't be as accurate as trying to pull them apart across the surface. Also, try this same test with the leather, but instead of using the finished side, use the rough side. Glue works better when it's got a rough surface to grab on to. It's like the difference between gluing a flat surface and gluing a sanded surface. Great vid, I love these types of videos!
E6000 for fabric!!!! A world of difference. I use it to secure many things to fabric, and fabric on fabric works 10xs better than anything you tried in this video.
The glue should be applied to a cleaned sample with a uniform masked area and rolled on with equal weight. This should ensure a more consistent surface area and equal thickness. Glue put on too thick can fail more than a thin coat and greasy fingers can also compromise adhesion. Two tests stand out for fabric application, shear and peel stress and testing both is a good idea. Also, some glues may have different cure temperatures and failure temperatures worth comparing. After one month, your glues may havedifferent results as well. Back when I was an alarm technician, I used a combination of marine grade goop along the edges and zig zag across the middle. I would fill the gaps with super glue gel, apply pressure and fasten, weigh or tape down for 24 hours. This method was the hardest to remove for what I used it on but I can see similar results working on solvent cleaned fabric.
Marine glue, used for aquariums will withstand wadhing. Super glue or other fast adhering adhesive dabbed in evenly spaced dots in-between can help hold the fabrics together without making the whole bond surface stiff and give time for the slower curing adhesive to bond without delamination issues. Super glue does not like a low pH. Prepping the super glue areas with a high pH water drops and drying enough to allow penetration while keeping other areas bone dry for the other adhesive will likely create the strongest bond. The areas where the glues overlap will be fine and may be stronger due to cross-linking.

Degrease the fabrics with the recomended cleaner, apply equal surface area, and press the fabrics on top of a warm oven with a uniform weight overnight. Do this with the fabric folded (peel test) and also with two over lapping fabrics (shear test). The top of the oven should be just warm enough to keep your hand there without needing to pull away.
Bro. You missed the BEST fabric/rubber/leather glue ever. Shoe Goo. Hands down the best and strongest and longest lasting fabric type glue out there. I’ve made a gilly suit, I’ve glued pants together, I’ve fixed shoes with it, I’ve even made a layer over my steel toes to make the steel toes last longer. Redo, Shoe Goo. The trick is to really press the glue into the fabric, work it into the fibers, and on leather you put it on the fibrous side not the smooth and tanned side, it will hold better. Put shoe goo up against the gorilla. Head to head. Mano a Mano. Lol
Thank you so much for this video! This saved me so much time and money. Can you test what kind of glue would be good for glueing fabric to wood/bamboo?

The thing about fabric glue on fabric is it allows flexibility of the fabric without the stiffness. Depending on the area, like a hem around the bottom of pants or inside seam of leg/crotch, how much strength is really needed for those areas. If croch area are tight fitting but close to the genitals, do you really want something that dries hard/irritating the sesitive area even with underwear on? Now if its a zippered area then yes use gorilla glue. It will last longer n put up with pulling up/down motion several times. I want to stress that glue was only meant for temporay fixes. Sewing is much sturdier, more comfortable, n lasts longer. Edit to add: fabric glue is also washable, meaning it wont disappear/wash out n replying the glue. Edit again: re apply, stupid spell check.
Did I miss something? The cotton Gorilla Glue's fabric ripped at 19lbs so giving the glue a rating of 19lbs doesn't seem fair when the fabric failed; not the glue 🤷♀️
Great to know bc I need to glue fabric over fabric on a lamp. That tip is perfect for folding edges to make a flawless seam. Do you have a fabric spray adhesive demo? I need it to spray a decorative fabric over the white lamp cloth. Thx

Some fabric glue is not intended to create a permanent bond. It is used instead to adhere pieces in order to be able to sew those pieces together uniformly.
You should do one like a shear strength test. Two squares glued together with overhang on opposite sides. Pinch the overhangs and test the strength. Also. When gluing leather you need to rough the edges before gluing.
Now try the same test but with contact cement. I use contact cement on leather projects, usually gluing the rough sides together, and some tapping with a hammer to help "set" the bond. If gluing the smooth side of leather it's best to scuff it up a bit to help the cement/glue penetrate the leather and give more surface area to bond to. I've never tried contact cement on fabric before, so it would be interesting to see.

this is a great test, but keep in mind if using these adhesives to glue a patch, there won't be that pulling pressure and the glues would hold up fine in many applications
Wow this video is on point because I have some fabric glue to use on a few items of clothes. I also have a vintage Polo belt that's splitting apart I wanna use it to fix that too but I know I'll need some weights for that.
Why would you glue the grained side of the leather instead of the flesh side? The grained side is what you would want to see anyway. It makes zero sense. I could see maybe flesh to grain, but grain to grain is bonkers. Also, the glue feels like "rubber or something" because it's glue specially formulated to flex with the cloth.
Can fabric glue be used instead of stitching? Can a quality clothing product be glued together? Is there stronger fabric blues that are more permanent?
I would rough up the surface of the finish side before putting glue. Bet you will have different results. On a search for fabric blue and your video helped. Thank you.
Saw you on the AJC website and thanks for the info. Yours was a quantitative measurement. Perhaps an improvement would be to be putting the glue on the fabric while it rests on an electronic scale so that the same amount of glue would be applied. Overall a very good vid.

Fabric glue is designed to do emergency temporary fixes, and for creating a bond to make sewing seams and hems easier. If you are using it for anything else, it's going to fail. It will never survive the washer and dryer.
Yes, I actually did enjoy seeing this test. I like your equipment setup to perform these tests. Nice work, and useful for my purposes. Thanks. I will add that people have different purposes in mind when considering use of fabric glue. In my case, it is not for clothing that will go in the wash repeatedly. More of an industrial application, so I think I will try the Gorilla glue. It will certainly cost less than hiring a seamstress to "edge" the canvas.
i think fabric glue is more for furniture and supposed to be an addition to stapling the fabric to the wood frame. i assume it's to stop the staples from being pulled out. that's at least what i think from destroying a bunch of sofas
Should have glued the rough sides of the leather together. I make leather stuff occasionally and use fabri-tac (rough to rough) and it is insanely strong. Guarantee you it would blow your mind how strong the bond is.
How well do seamtapes hold? I am considering using seamtapes to make a cover for my Dutch Oven table. The cloth will be silicon-saturated to make it waterproof. Trying to figure out if I should make the seams then saturate or saturate first.
Believe it or not. I used a krazy glue fast dry small stick to put a piece of my couch back together. My dog bit the corner and ripped a 4 inch piece. I cut a piece of the back of the couch and glued it in its place. Never budged in over a year. Previous I had sewn it together and that came apart. Liquid krazy glue is great for fixing fabric

Sorry man you left caps lock on
@@BadgerFiresFoam I NEVER TAKE THEM OFF....LOL
Considering these were 1/4" dots of glue instead of a line across the cross section overall not bad, as primary use would be repairing items without any load bearing , well except for jeans maybe 🤔😁
i'd be curious to see shoe glues and leather glues being used

@@tyannaclark1196 @Tyanna clark I totally agree! I've really f***ed some items up using Tear Mender because of how permanent it is!
I'd like to see barge cement shoe glue on a test like that
Is there a chance that the dropping of the apparatus caused an incorrectly high reading with some of the tests? Perhaps a re-do with 2 strips of fabric glued together rather than i piece folded in half. Also, maybe add a measure test after washing.

Before watching this, Imma guess fabric glue is stronger than the fabric in most cases.
*Update*- Yeah I was way off
That is lite

Yeahhhh lol that was my guess too
I would think these types of glues are dependent on the job, fabric glues are not necessarily meant to be permanent and can be used for a quick fix or maybe with the lighter strength glues you need to be able to remove the fabric you glue
glues, batteries and scissors tests are life's must dos

A lap joint would be interesting. Instead of getting leverage on the glue and peeling them apart it would act more like a pulling force. Might get some higher readings.
How about testing Tear Mender fabric glue? Its been around for years,I used it patching my jeans many times. I worked construction and it held up through many washings.
Wow, I can't believe it's been 4 years since the glue testing origins... Time really flies.

Interesting. How do each of these glue type samples affect sewing needle (gumming the needle or breaking needle or thread) stitching through the glue if used as temporary seam basting?
Hi Tyler,
Like another commenter said, could you try an edge to edge test?

I would think a more relevant test for fabric is how many washing/drying/ironing cycles it does hold
Thank you!
I am working on making window covers for my pickup camper setup. Found this by accident, and boy, am I happy I did! Outstanding job!!
I wonder if Tyler knows that kinda glue is made to hold the fabric together before you sew it it's like tack welds for metal the things u learn helping your grama every weekend in summer time
No, he is clueless as they come.
Bro I’ve been watching u for almost 4 years now. I instantly clicked on this video when I saw it was a glue video. I hope you keep makin more glue videos brotha 😂💯
You have no idea how helpful this was! Thank you so much!
Lol
Yes a glue video!!,

Here we go this is what I've been waiting for Tyler testing glues this is awesome
Never seen you upload twice in one week keep up the good work man
But what effect does each glue have on the material (like discoloration)? Or washing the (glued) fabrics in a washingmachine?
I’m so glad you made another glue video. I missed them
I need to do a project with some of this stuff. if you want to do another one of these i have a request. could you try gluing fabric to a smooth piece of plywood? burlap in particular, i need to know if it will hold up to water (its for a fishtank stamd), if you can see the glue through the fabric, and how well it actually stays on there. video idea for you, useful information for me, win win
Could you try using 2 different fabrics glued together. Like the polyester to denim
Fabric glue is not meant for pulling apart, it should be tested by sheering force.
Also, it's not a permanent adherence. It's a temp hold.
Leather probably not considered a fabric. Ahhh. The wisdom. Love ya Tyler
Tyler i'we watched your videos for a long time and i absolutely love them! And for nostalgia i watched some of your older videos and man they are still equally great! I love your content and keep up with the good videos, love you man :)
Thx
Denim is made if cotton unless it is the stretchy kind. What you were comparing was the weaves denim is a different weave then a t shirt like material which is a form of knit.
You mentioned double side tape in this video. If you haven't already done it, how about a wood block test of double side tape. Possibly with a different number of strips of tape on the wood block as well.

Used to glue a laundry mark that doesn't wash off or or to keep stitches from fraying.
i use a brand called Tear Mender. the shit just welds the fabric together, it seems.
Fabric glue is meant for hems on clothing and putting two bits of fabric togethrer. It doesnt have any weight on it that way. so it does work just fine
You should make an object, like a chair or a table out of glue. Using all different types of glue, maybe even some of the fabric glue
Also, put the cloths still glued in the washer and dryer and retest. Thanks. Great stuff.
this is a great test, but keep in mind if using these adhesives to glue a patch, there won't be that pulling pressure and the glues would hold up fine in many applications
next time please include superglue/Krazy glue ... thanks love these ... great service for humanity
Also, the glue feels like "rubber or something" because it's glue specially formulated to flex with the cloth.
love the videos so much, been watching them for years. seeing you test glue again takes me way back :D
These are my favorite videos. Idk why. But I love the glue/tape videos
Can fabric glue be used instead of stitching? Can a quality clothing product be glued together? Is there stronger fabric blues that are more permanent?
I was like no a 6 mins video for a Saturday upload but I see you came through thanks bro keep up the great work
I would rough up the surface of the finish side before putting glue. Bet you will have different results. On a search for fabric blue and your video helped. Thank you.
I've used fabric fusion before and cursed at it many times before I've seen this video, sadly! Thanks again Tyler!

The correct glue would be contact adhesive for fabric I do upholstery for trucks so we use contact adhesive it works really well
Yes, I actually did enjoy seeing this test.
This is great. including the leather was actually genius. Love it.
I’m so impressed by ur weight loss, well done my man! Keep living healthy!! Ain’t nothin better
