Today we're working on my 1997 Honda Civic Hatchback. This time around we are focusing on upgrading the cluster in this car! After pulling an EX cluster from the junkyard, it was time to focus on getting this tachometer installed. But there is a plot twist at the end...

I used to buy Civic RPM clusters from a local salvage yard for super cheap and sell them to CX DX guys. It was easy money.

the old tach is repairable, i’m not sure why but the needle was in the completely wrong position earlier in the video so i assume you moved it but you need to plug it into the car and cycle the key to get the car to reset the needle position and then try and place the needle right at 0 rpm

My first Civic was an '84 I bought new and I now drive a Gen10 Accord 2.0T, with all kinds of Hondas in between.
I must say the car that enjoyed the most was my '98 Civic hatch. I do miss that car.

I would definitely replace all the lights bulbs behind the cluster while its out! I swapped out the bulbs for red LED on mine long time ago.

Adore seeing this car get upgraded, have always wanted one of my own. All those old civics are so iconic! Unfortunate that the 2 old civics I had were both 2001's that were too far gone. East coast cars are a whole different animal :(

I got my first car in a ford is 03/04 it was a 1990 original red Honda civic hatchback SI 5 speed no power steering sat low ran like go-cart I loved that car ran it into the ground ❤ Burnt through numerous clutches, banged up the diff went thur an ecu also loved it love your shorts made me think of my car I had I high school

Really enjoyed this video. Bummer the junk yard tachometer didn't work, but nice the ebay (I love ebay) unit did. I confess to be a little disappointed that you didn't take the Biohazard Civic for a spin to test drive the new units. Next video perhaps?
Yes! Another update in the saga haha. It’s interesting that the tach did that, I wonder if it was normal in the donor and handling the cluster somehow broke it.

Zak, very cool and it seems like you rotate the tach needle while rotating the cluster around. Otherwise, any reason why you didn't do a LED upgrade to the cluster's lamps? It is an easy, inexpensive and very, very cool touch!
TBH, the tachometer issue is a simple needle offset issue, and can be fix very easy. Just carefully remove the needle without pulling the whole pin out, start the engine forcing the pin to go to the 0 (reset) position. And reinstall the needle on the pin pointing to the 0 position. No need to swap anything actually.

i was wondering if u were planning on using the touch up paint from TUD in a video though? i bought the same exact kit for my project e39 which is a very similar color, and haven’t used it yet because i’m not very confident in my paint correction skills lol. just wondering, seeing the process from someone else with similar experience would help lots. if not no worries though ofc. :)

oh the good old starts at 4k honda tack i have seen that a few times mostly in automatics and in that case most owners will not care its only the manual owners that want that fixed.

I needed this video like 20 yrs ago when I swapped my cluster. The replacement had more mileage too, I ended up rolling down by hand and it worked through. 🤯🫣😅
