Wake up.... that plane would have "crashed" exactly where the missile was launched from whilst AF1 was airborne nearby a couple months ago. Where's all the news crews crawling all over the island? Its closed off isn't it..... And don't try to explain why the fighter jet was "offering a suicidal person to land anywhere"..... thereby risking hundreds of people on the ground. Protocol should have been to shoot it down whilst over water.

They should have talked about helping him see his loved ones, he didn’t want to go to jail, that’s not avoidable at this point but could have said they could testify that he didn’t want to hurt anyone. They only talked about what they wanted. I believe they should’ve talked about pleading insanity and how he would get help with any loose screws.

also he nailed his barrel roll. That is the most important part of this epic story

    • @jkorshak
      @jkorshak 6 років тому +11

The barrel roll was sloppy, mostly dive, and he turned 90 degrees off heading because there was no rudder compensation as he inverted, but he wasn't a pilot and the plane isn't designed for aerobatics. He nailed it in terms of he only almost nearly went into the water by about 20 meters.

Joe Vignolo you know people talk about the politics of Economics today especially in this country people get really offended and the truth of the fact of the matter is a lot of high paying jobs are unavailable the only thing has been rising as the rise of minimum wage jobs which are mostly part-time full-time positions are very hard to come by these days for example like myself I've been working as a baker for 5 years straight now and despite the amount of hours I work on a weekly basis the policies and conduct of my company that I work for won't allow me to be a full-timer because of petty reasons like they can't afford a full-timer despite them being a chain Corporation that's just an example for my situation I am educated I have a degree I work day in day out my day starts at 1 in the morning and I'm out of there by 9-10 am in the morning there's a lot of jobs out there that are like that can people today can't survive on the minimum wage job when it comes to cost of living

@ pyro lopez - You are very typical. I grew up back in the 1960's. My father was a taxi driver but he made an acceptable middle class living for his family. This always included a five day, forty hour work week, a dinner out at a nice restaurant at least once a week and a two week vacation every summer. Since then a lot has been changed. Now a relatively few people make a very nice living in banking and finance, government and in large corporations. Meanwhile the middle class has been shrunk and it constantly struggles. The stress and constant financial pressure wears people down and eventually some of them crack.

Maybe that will grease some gears little bit with the higher ups" His work on the ramp was hard, underpaid, threated without any respect. As one of his coworkers said: "This work culture prompted Russel to teach his bosses a lesson. To show them that they has pushed a god guy to his limits". So, how we human treat people 'below us' in this profit-oriented civilisation, is the main cause of this tragedy.

Ya, it's pretty disappointing. Aeronautics is a pretty respected field here in Washington state. When people think Washington they think of D.C., but then when you tell them WA State they think of Starbucks, Microsoft, Boeing, Valve, Sub Pop, Amazon, and beautiful vistas. I feel for the guy. I haven't done baggage work but I know it's hard work, especially with these hot days we've been having lately. Sometimes getting a low wage isn't so bad, it's the combination of a low wage along with the disrespect that comes with it. That's the kicker. Me, for example, I was making more than him, $13.50, working in a warehouse at Circuit City back when I was 19 in 2004. It wasn't the best job, but my coworkers were chill, it paid the bills, and the labor wasn't too crazy. Of course, I wish I was getting paid more, but I just wanted a better life with a little wiggle room and it was okay. I saved up enough money to go on a month long vacation to Europe with my girlfriend in 06'.
He, in 2018, was 10 years older than me (in comparison), making $1.00 to $1.50 less an hour in the nation's 9th busiest airport. We could talk inflation if we wanted, we could just talk about the price of gas alone and it's still much more bleak than "just a $1.00 to $1.50"
I later became a FedEx delivery driver, where I made approximately $17/hr. The guys who would load my truck made $13-$15.
Airport concessions make $15, but the people handling luggage in the hot sun busting their ass make $12? In 2018? Work in and work out here doesn't make sense but there are other benefits. That's not what people focus on when you tell them "I'm a delivery guy" or "I'm a baggage handler" and you're 29.
That's the kicker. No one respects hard work. It's not hard work that gets you paid anymore. We have an entire generation of dudes who were told that if they work hard they'll do fine. They are working hard but they're also seeing that people who DO NOT WORK HARD are doing better. This isn't a slight at rich people. The only comparison you need to make is me pushing boxes in a warehouse ten years ago, versus him and his coworkers, busting their asses in the hot sun pushing hundreds of pounds of luggage while working for what should be considered one of Western Washington's prime industries, getting paid less than I was, and I ain't rich. Not at all.
Warehouse work isn't super hard work. Taking orders isn't super hard work. Busting your ass in construction and doing physical manual labor is hard work, but it can also be demeaning. It looks to me, that if people just respected him, he probably could've been fine with the money. He might not have felt trapped. There are a lot of bonuses that come with that minimum wage job, so that could even out the pay a bit if you love to travel, but it's that "you're a baggage handler at 29?" that really probably got to him in all honesty. Ya, minimum wage sucks, but only to the extent that people who work easier jobs are getting paid the same as you. It really does make you feel like a chump, but to be honest it's not the wage in and of itself that's the problem, it's the disdain you get from those around you and eventually end up feeling about yourself.
Even though I wasn't getting paid his wage, being in a physical line of work sucks when it's not respected. I've worked construction and delivery too. It's not a bad gig, it's not a great one either, but some of my most cherished moments were when I got to talk to customers or customers would get me a drink of water or coffee or whatever (I delivered appliances for a bit too so seeing customers in their own environment after they were getting their "brand new toy" made them much less defensive and much more agreeable).
Hard work isn't so bad as long as it's respected. I honestly think people would rather be respected more than paid more. It's just abundantly apparent that wage equals respect. Respect and opportunity is enough, but if the wage is so low, and the work is so hard, and you feel stuck. When you feel like you can't do anything else.
      Then do a barrel roll.

Your version of a hero is jacked up. He did fly without hurting anyone, but he still put peoples life at risk and he stole an aircraft and destroyed it. So he’s a hero because he didn’t get a raise and gets back at them by doing this?? He’s dead, he destroyed an aircraft he stole, and his family and friends will never see him again. I understand he was frustrated and wasn’t fully mentally stable, but that’s not a hero move.

We have nothing to do with sitting in the cockpit and firing up engines. The guy pushed the plane out from the storage square, jumped in and took what he learnt off flight sims to do what he did. He does also sound pretty clued on by how he speaks, no dummy.... He may of been using the dash flight sim and planning this for years.

That's why the standard of living has gone down - because of too-big corrupt government - not because of corporations.

You have the flying public’s safety at stake and we need good hard working folks that don’t need to be worried about how their going to pay their rent and feed their kids every week. I work as a Operations Manager in the aircraft maintenance department for one of the bigger airlines now but I started off throwing bags and loading aircraft and worked my way through school to get licensed to do so. Ramp workers are definitely paid very little, work their butts off for little pay and have some of the worst shifts. I can’t tell you how many times I almost walked away from the airlines because I was treated so poorly when I worked as a ramper. This is a sad story when a man can be pushed to his breaking point like this.

Not sure the FAA would go for any of that as a remote fuel shut off could get hacked and parking trucks in front of a moving plane is easier said than done. I'm not sayn these ideas wouldn't work, but I doubt they would ever get cleared as an acceptable method to stop a plane

I live just outside of Wasilla (Alaska) where his family lives. I have flown on these prop planes of Horizon Air, which is owned by Alaska Airlines and we've long held concern of security on the airport grounds -- not specific intentionally so as to not give anyone else any ideas. But what's very odd is another Wasilla resident owns the land he crashed the plane on. Is that a coincidence?

He could have been a pilot instead of a ground handler if he could have dealt with his inner being. Now a million dollar aircraft has been lost and a man is dead, and while he may not have wanted to hurt others his actions have left many emotionally scarred for life.

Okay I'm confused, I seen the unedited version but, did he commit suicide or did a engine really blow? Cause the pilot said "im going to nose dive and call it a night" okay that's a suicide reference but, he also said after the barrel roll "I think my engine is going out". Did he commit suicide or die by accident?

Redlantern Actually, I believe he said instruments, it was really hard to say, but he consistantly mentioned not hurting anyone else, and that if he successfully did a barrel roll, that he would nosedive and they could call it a night... according to the timing of his conversation, and the timing of the loop the loop/ or barrel roll recorded, I would say he kept his word and nosedived... also, at his last call out to the ATCs he was down to 760 gallons of fuel, and that was before the manuever, which I would say took some gallons making that lift up..... he couldnt have had much fuel left at all.... Sad, but at least he didnt take others with him, which shows me he wasnt angry... he just decided life wasnt worth living, and maybe as selfish as that seems to us, individuals do things spontaneously, that no one expects, even things like this!

A man who didn't want to die,
He wanted to live, and live he did
Through mountain ranges he soared and fipped,
His trip ended early, and a shame it is,
That Captain "Sky King" Russel didn't get to do it all over again.
