    I also just did this... oddly, right about when this video was posted. I have a few tips for whoever might follow: 1. do only one side at a time. Leave the other wheel on the ground. Doing it that way will effectively lock the differential. If you put the WJ's transfer case into 4 Low, you ain't turning that axle so there is no need for the stick of metal on the lug nuts. 2. Home Depot has a 24" breaker bar with 1/2" drive for cheap. Worth way more than it costs. 3. Before you try to squish the caliper piston, undo the banjo bolt. It'll be a little messy, but taking the caliper off without any brake lines attached is as simple and just undoing the bracket on the knuckle and chucking the whole assembly. No need for a clamp or the screwdriver, they'll just compress with hand pressure when the banjo is off. 4. The 7mm is in the $20 3/8 accessory set at Home Depot, too. You'll need stuff in there when you do your gas shocks for your hood, lift gate, and lift gate glass, so you might as well just get the whole set.

      5. STRONGLY recommend anti-seize on that hub assembly! Next time you won't need to beat on it so much!

    Two notes for others, I like to put anti seize on the hub and than put the rotor on. Also I am doing this switch today with '01 GC...Its easier to put the whole Caliper assembly together with clean hands including the brake shoes and putting the whole thing on at once... Brake fluid is very corrosive be sure not to get it on anything. Otherwise wipe it off right away.
    I put on the Powerstop powder coated red.

    The original brake calipers are removed using a 7mm allen wrench, not a 17mm allen wrench...

    To swap to the akebono calipers, are the hubs different too or you just wanted to replace them?

    Very nice video...thanks a bunch. Just FYI, that's a 7 mm hex socket that you use to remove the brake caliper.
    1/2 inch ratchet? Yes / no?

      Yes. 1/2" driving the T45. Thanks for the info.

    Great video! (other then the out of sink audio). Did you notice a big difference in stoping power? I'm thinking about doing this to my WJ!

    • @TheTSFChannel
      @TheTSFChannel  8 років тому

      Nothing is out of sync, I assure you. Audio files will play sooner than video on some devices, especially when streaming. The rotors and brake pad size was the same. No negligible difference. That being said, once I added more accessories, a ProtoFab bumper and rear tire carrier, larger tires, etc, it affected stopping power, but because the Jeep was much heavier. Great question! Thanks!

    thanks for this video, so the brake lines does not need to be changed

    • @TheTSFChannel
      @TheTSFChannel  5 років тому

      Correct. Of course, if you also install a huge lift kit, you may need to swap out brake lines for longer ones because the calipers will be farther away from the unibody.

    there are direction arrows, or marked sign o disc?
    I'm asking because first time a see that direction, but I'm motorcycles mechanic :)

    Nice work :-) but am a little concerned as it appears you have put the right side EBC rotor onto the left side of the jeep. The slots on the rotor are angled in a way that when you brake when going forwards it forces the water to the rear of the car. There should have been a small sticker on the back of the rotor (R & L) .... hopefully all is well and it's just the way it looks in the video but worth a check.

    • @TheTSFChannel
      @TheTSFChannel  6 років тому

      Both rotors were slotted in the same direction. You can Google EBC rotors and see pairs facing the same direction, which was what I got.

    Don't ever pump the brakes with the valve open. You have to pump the brakes, stop, then open the valve and let the air out. I'm sure you figured this out after the video. Also it appeared to me you had your rotors on the wrong way.

  • @1badhoekaren903

    Any links for these same exact rotors and pads?

    • @TheTSFChannel
      @TheTSFChannel  5 років тому

      This was 5 years ago. Search for EBC rotors for your Jeep. I found an old thread on jeepforum.com where I wrote, I bought them at Pep Boys. Honestly, I can't remember. I do remember, I bought the wrong pads, initially. They were also EBC. Good luck on your project!

    Stop overtightening the bleeder valve. Damn! it only needs 12 to 15ft/lbs. with a standard wrench or ratchet that means just pulling the wrench until it is snug then maybe an 1/8th of a turn after. Mechanics like you are why bleeders don't come free and end up getting snapped off trying to loosen them when a brake line or something else has to be changed. The bleeder valve is designed with a slight bevel on the end and it presses down and seals quiet easily. Other than that you should have put some anti-seize or bearing grease on the hub face to stop it from rusting or from seizing to the rotor face with oxidation. Overall not a bad job for a DIY brake upgrade.

      Whoever said I was a mechanic? I claim the opposite, actually. I appreciate the extra advice, though. Hopefully someone else attempting this will know better than I did.

      @TSF Channel For some reason seeing you snug those 3 or 4 times just triggered me. Didn't mean to be offensive. Haven't watched your channel this video just happen to come up in my feed. Another good tip for the home DIY'er.....If you don't have your better half around to pump those brakes. You can make a very cheap vacuum bleeder by taking apart any household spray bottle and attaching the sprayer to the other end of the bleeder hose you had. Open the bleeder and pump the sprayer to create a vacuum on the bleeder and pull the air/fluid from the caliper until it is full. Watch where you are pointing the spray nozzle so you aren't spraying brake fluid everywhere when it reaches the spray nozzle. Overall you did a pretty good job though. I always try to brake open bleeders when servicing any brakes even for just pads, and bleed them with the vacuum bleeder. Bring fresh fluid to the caliper and ensures if I have to service the brakes again I won't be removing a snapped off bleeder as part of the repair.
