My favourite thing about Anthem is that even the story is about how the world is left unfinished and was rushed to release.
What’s your least favorite thing?
@@Tyrone-Ward The game being unfinished and rushed to release.
My favorite thing is that one Heavy MG variant. You know the one, BOM BOM BOM BOM BOM.
@@AntiVectorTVDoubled Edged Sword
The sheer irony of that being their story, when it'll never see a proper release state because even that was canceled. I am honestly surprised the servers are still up, I was sure they'd shut them down by late 2022.
Anthem is a game someone's playing for 20 seconds in a movie
I was just watching a clip from Shameless and some kid was playing Dead Space with a Gamecube controller
@@SteeZy644 lol i just watched shameless too and fiona was playing dead rising 4 and i laughed my ass off. what a shit game.
@@TacdelioI played dead rising 4 for the 1st time in capcom heroes mode and had a blast
It's a game that Jesse Pinkman would be playing while experiencing PTSD
After a certain point, all these dead, forgotten AAA titles just blur together into an amorphous mass of grey, pallid sludge in my memory.
Some games that have ingame cash shops
For every huge, bombastic, hilarious failure like Anthem or Gollum or Redfall; there are ten boring, dull, uninteresting failures that completely vanish from collective human consciousness in a matter of weeks.
Godfall, D&D Dark Alliance, Gotham Knights, Marvel's The Avengers, Wolfenstein Youngblood, like 5 of the Assassin's Creed games, Disney Infinity, Outriders, Biomutant. When was the last time you even THOUGHT about any of these? These games aren't funny-bad, they're just bad - they are destined to join a mass grave of untold thousands, forgotten by history.
@@leafdog2714I had a lot of fun with Outriders but damn did that game die fast
It's like every Ubisoft game since Far Cry 2 and all the CoDs I guess. In my head I keep conflating the Advanced Warfare and COD BLOPS 3 campaign and it's been like a decade.
@@leafdog2714 Why is Godfall on there? I didn't do amazing, but it certainly didn't do bad. It had a pretty stable player base for long enough to be declared successful.
EA having a service to play their games of micro transactions is like putting taxes on taxes on tithes
And you know the government is jealous, because they want to do that.
taxes on (large) entry fee* on tithes.
@@keanuxu5435 they'd put micro transactions on pausing the game if they could
With no option to pass over the offering plate.
@@Qushu92 you don't get to use the offering plate if it's not part of the preorder dlc
Otherwise they just have you swipe your card and charge you a fee for not having the plate, then a tax on that
They have that same model as Ubisoft, "who doesn't wanna play a giant sandbox open world game that feels as empty and hollow as the executives souls"
Anthem has good gunplay and good movement, kinda-nice background and graphics, everything else is suck balls, so this game is actually a tech demo of how cool basic mechanics could be, they forgot to make variety, progression, story, but did not forget to make microtransactions.
Well, as far as I remember, this game was made in about 18 months. And the years before that were just pre production and Bioware banging their heads against the wall trying to decide what kind of game they wanted to make.
"We screwed around for five years so we had to rush game dev in 18 months on our billion dollar new IP" isn't really an excuse. More a damning indictment of the failures of Bioware.
Lets not forget progression being so broken lvl 1 common weapons are hyperscalled to be stronger than endgame ones
@@operatchick6486 Yeah most of the time the blame can be placed on the publisher but there's a few times the blame is definitely on the Developer. Redfall also comes to mind, though I guess that was sort of Zenimax and MS should have cancelled the game.
It seems like modern games start at developing the microtransactions so at least those have to work 'properly'
I remember reading about the production of Anthem and that EA had basically nothing to do with the game other than telling BioWare to keep the flying in. Anthem flopping was entirely on BioWare’s leadership.
Finally!!! Someone else that realized that the game failure wasn’t entirely on EA, but more so was the developers faults.
But why would EA publish the game in such a bad state? Why not give the devs more time?
@@forff1111 Cause the game was in development for 7 years. You can't just keep giving studios "more time." Eventually you have to say enough is enough and ship a product. Bioware (A team) had so many managements issue and internal studio conflict that wouldn't been fixed with "more time." Hell, Bioware (A team) didn't want to take any help or feedback from B team (SWTOR Team). The leadership team kept pushing this fake thing called "Bioware Magic"... etc
The only thing EA can be blamed for is them forcing Bioware to use Frostbite.
EDIT: Also, from the sounds of development, had EA given Bioware more time. They would have used that time to further lollygagg. They didn't actually start getting to work on the game until EA had given them a hard deadline.
@@tyrcipher8811 BioWare chose to use Frostbite.
@@TheSpongyMallard They didn’t. During the development of Anthem, it was a requirement from EA that all studios use Frostbite. It why every FIFA, Need for Speed… etc All made the move to Frostbite. It was until Fallen Order that EA removed the requirement and allowed studio to pick other engines.

Dollar-store Warframe being sold at Apple Store prices.
The “We have Warframe at home” kinda game
Say what you will about Warframe, it's a game with a heckuva lot of stuff in it. Kind of rough to get into, for a new player, and that's a major flaw I have to admit even as a long-time fan and player. Also some of the in-game obtainment methods are ridiculously grindy. Others, merely quite grindy. But there's a lot of room to have fun doing stuff you enjoy, and I respect them for that, at least!
@@hazukichanx408
Its an MMO, its MEANT to be grindy.
As an early MAG main, if anyone understands the grind, its me!
@hazukichanx408 lets not forget in the actual warframe only TWO weapons are unobtainable without paying and they haventbeen viable or buyable since launch
Lato and skana prime
And excalibur prime is a direct downgrade to Umbra-sama
@@hazukichanx408 as someone who never played an mmo before, warframe was really unapproachable to me. don't care for all the fuzz. cool art direction, though
Shame this game turned out the way it did while also having probably one of the best jetpack flying mechanics ive ever seen. The vertical map littered with waterfalls and streams for you to cool down your jets. It was easy to fly from one end to the other without landing.
Ngl the jetpack flying of anthem reminds me of just cause 3, it sucks that 4 is kinda lame
I will always be infuriated to the fact that they abandoned the idea of fixing Mass Effect Andromeda to work on Anthem only for them to abandon it as well making it absolutely pointless that they abandoned Andromeda which they could have saved
well ; if bioware fucks up one more time. they'll be sold off by ea.
4:40 It's amazing how this character's face was deliberately designed to make you hate him and want to punch him. It takes skill to do something like that.
It's so funny cause I'm scrolling through the comments before I even got to that point in the video and I knew exactly who you were talking about

" 'Freelancer' sounds like I'm gonna get a quest to redesign the website for a local coffee shop, and then they'll refuse to pay me"
Having played the game Freelancer, I can confirm that this is what usually happens.
Now that was a good game, still haven't played any other space fighter game that manages to capture that feel.
You are actually a freelancer in that game, it's open world space sim. Still awesome too.
The worst part about Anthem is that it feels like it could have been an absolute classic in another timeline.
It would have had it come out 15 years earlier than it did.

I really appreciate that oboe made not one video thumbnail but 5 additional hypothetical video thumbnails for this video
I really like this new youtube feature. Most """content""" """creators""" are using it to game the algorithm and find out what thumbnail brings the most views but the good content creators like oboe and IH are using it like a comic book with limited time alternate covers.
The amount of potential this game has/had is insane, not to mention that live short from oats studios, the music is also badass

And, yes, this *is* coming from someone who has played Warframe.
I’m glad oboe’s living plans for the apocalypse is a Walmart, I too have a similar idea but i can’t decide between a movie theater or the local applebees
Movie theater for sure. The one closest to me has a little food place with a kitchen in the back, and an arcade, got lots of space too.
if you showed 10 year old me footage of this game with an Iron man suit flying through an alien planet shooting things, and then told me I'd have absolutely no interest in ever playing it I'd be so confused.
Fun fact, during Anthem's development, Bioware kept flip flopping on keeping the flying system into the game and it's only still in the game because the CEO of EA played an early build of Anthem and was angry they cut the feature and demanded they add flying back in. The only good aspect of the game is only there because of the corporate overlord of EA.
One of my friends was hired straight out of high school to work at BioWare. He was a bug fixer for anthem and he was always so excited to talk about this game.
Is he still there ?

Every time I see this game on PSN, it's on sale for like $5. It always makes me laugh.
Having played Anthem for approximately 45 minutes. I can confidently say that your "flavorless gum" metaphor was spot on. Probably the best description of this game.
This game is an amalgamation of every terrible feature of games that came before it. Boring hub world, most customization of your mech being strictly cosmetic. Grinding the same boss in the same area, only this time, it has a blue health bar over the green one. That being said, the traversal of the environment, the movement of your mech, and the graphics were all topnotch.
I'll never forgive EA taking funding and skilled devs away from Andromeda and forcing them to work on Anthem
Ayy my buddy Steve designed the interceptor (he was QA but so mad that it sucked since it was his main that he submitted proposals). He works on DA4 now!
That's dope.
The Interceptor was really fun!
The flying was really well made imo and actually fun, and the combat was quite decent. Could've been so much more though.
Too bad there were no flying enemies so everything took place on the ground.

I thought they took down the game servers lol
I played like 20 hours of this game when it came out and I remember absolutely none of it. Goes to show how great the game was.

God, they had a cool idea with Anthem, give everyone cool iron man mech suits. But nothing else around it works.
i like the character designs and stuff in anthem it would have been cool to use that in a really good game. i hope they make it free so i can atleast test the suits just cuz i really think they look cool especialy the bendy backwards ranger legs cuz i like robot stuff like that
Anthem is like a girl inviting you over for some full blown seggs, sloppy toppy and all but she just gives you a sleepy handy instead, but at least she looks good.

I actually really liked this game. It hurts how bad it failed
It's remarkable how large that tech demo is, pity they never made a game out of it.
The thing is, the game looks fucking cool and sounds pretty good. There’s just no variety and the story is ass. It could’ve been fantastic with a skilled and dedicated team working on it.
What’s even funnier is if you bought the ultimate edition you got access to all 4 suits at the start
0:30 Is there a lore reason that John Anthem has ADMMs?
Played this for free, and for that price tag, it was alright. The flying was fun, but that's to be expected when that's literally all that is on offer.
"The Freelancers" "The Dominion" "The Relic" these thoughtful naming choices remind me of Destiny... "The Traveller" "The Guardian" "The Darkness"
Anthem is in the elite category of games worthy of the sound effect typically reserved for Dolmen
One thing I always remember about this game is that it was mentioned some of the developers just thought the game would fix itself cause of "Bioware Magic." Imagine feeling a product would be great because it was just made by a certain company, if that was true they wouldn't even need to work in the first place.
the videos just keep getting better and better dude. great job! :)
At this point I think EA just forgot that the servers for anthem are still running on some desktop in a broom closet
oh, that's the Cuff from Forespoken doing the exact same quirky british bit as a robot in Anthem ...
John Anthem is the best video game character. Prove me wrong.
Anthem...had a lot going for it
It also released at the worst time with a lot of missing content, and what was there, was generic. That being said: Flying around in a mech suit will NEVER get old
anthem is a flying simulator. i wish it wasnt so
"A quest to redesign a website for a local coffee shop and then they'll refuse to pay me." I've been there, man.
The only thing I remember about Anthem was that I'm unable to play the game so I sent a support request to EA, they insist that the game will be fix soon.
After 5 days, EA cancelled the update for Anthem.
This video gave me my yearly reminder that I actually played Anthem to completion, I forget why I did though
There was so much potential. The flight felt great. The abilities were neat... the game just didn't get the support and work it needed.
why isn't the video titled 'ANTHEM 1 - BIOWARE MADE THIS?!'
It's sad to say we can't even blame EA for this one. It's literally all biowares fault.
I heard that this one had a decent enough campaign if you could get it for like 5 bucks
Damn shame, those robot suits are legitimately cool

Anthem was so much fun...for like 4 hours, and then it just became a slog
once you realize that all your missions are THE SAME . and the loot is THE SAME. and the LOADING IS HORRIBLE... and the town is so boring.
This game has better customization and PAINT then Halo infinite. Let that sink in
6:25 can’t wait for explosive! (Rip bloodwing)
Unpopular opinion, but I loved this game. Interceptor gameplay was the perfect thing for my ADHD brain. I also found the world quite interesting and really liked the overall design philosophy.
Sadly bugs kept appearing instead of being fixed and the game became unplayable.
Probably not that unpopular of an opinion. The game is fun but the problem is that it's supremely shallow which kills the interest and longevity of it pretty quickly. Good bones but no meat, yknow?
Damn, this game actually looks gorgeous. Such a shame it sucks.
In apocalypse, even I would board in Walmart. Well , it has guns and Karens. Two best things to inflict damage to the aliens . Nice choice Jayvee
This one hurts me. I initially played this game hard for about 3 weeks after launch and then all of my friends dropped the game all together. In late 2021 I went back solo and finished out the trophy list.
I like to think oboe has a little file with the "CORROSION!" sound bite and every editing session he's just itching to find an excuse to put it in
I wish anthem took off. The world is really neat and I’m a huge fan of the enemy designs
Fromsoft should be the one to handle a remake for Anthem.
ngl the interceptor got some cakes when you are flying around
flying around with jetpack and shooting enemies and using your abilities was fun. so barren of content to keep you coming back. What I remember playing at launch
i literally cant believe servers are still up for this, for 2 people. i guess it cant be said that ea is cheap.
the thing that really gets me about Anthem and really proves the higher up were only considered about money is the fact that during one of their small updates they introduced a bug that made rare items drops super common. However, instead of letting it stay like that, they quickly patched it out, despite how much more fun the game was and how many people were telling them not to. They cared more about making people grind more - likely to make people buy microtransactions - versus making the game fun
I still get sad thinking what could have been. Gorgeous game with amazing gameplay. Could've been a real Warframe competitor.
How can I laugh at this? There's no "The Dead Speak!"
Mom, i want Armored Core.
Nonsense, we have armored core at home.
Armored core at home: anthem.
anthem is the most oboe era game to release since they stopped making 360s
The worst part about anthem was how good it felt to fly in it and knowing you have to play a horrible game just to experience that.

When I heard Freelancer I was like "Freelancers? Like... Red vs Blue?"
Wow, not even a single ‘They fly now?’
You know, this could've been more fun if EA let the team update the game lol. They made some fun ways to play it just had to be refined and expanded on properly. Oh well another really interesting idea down the drain.
there used to be an MMO shooter with similar abilities, guns and air movement - Firefall, - but it died a long time ago. This missile rain ultimate, for example, belonged to Arsenal dreadnought frame and was called Micromissiles and it was as undeniably awesome there as it is here :) but the falling-from-the-sky move closer to the end - Crater as it was called in Firefall - was a lot more fun, could modify it too to deploy a shield after the impact. Lots of abilities could be modded to do something extra.
Corrosion.

Anthem was really fun in so many ways. I really miss it and it just gave me another reason to hate EA for ruining its potential.
that virmire joke was too good.
Choosing Colossus first was both a good and bad move. Good: You can facetank an Ursix and a Titan, because you have so much defense. Bad: It doesn't really demonstrate the agile, frenetic combat of Anthem, to pick the Javelin you can fail upwards in.
I could have sworn they took the servers down for this years ago
