I like the way they approach magic. It makes combat a little bit more nuanced. You can't just spam the same spell over and over. On the other hand. Combat is missing impact behind those hits

I understand people talking badly about Obsidian when it comes to gameplay. Obsidian has never been very good at making incredible gameplay, but they make up for it with the story they create.
Gameplay must be engaging and compelling enough to motivate players to explore and uncover the game's story though. At the end of the day, gameplay is king.
I think the point is... It can all be great. Why would I purchase a game thinking "ye the gameplay is bad but the story is probably good" i mean lol what. I want it to be sick across the board and not buy based on compromise
@Deathshuck RPG fans don't think that way. As long as the RPG elements are great (New Vegas, Vampire The Masquerade, Kingdom Come Deliverance . . .) We don't really care if the gameplay if a little janky.
The impact with your weapons is not there. It makes the game so jarring to watch, as it looks like you're just hitting open air. It's slow too or something. I can't describe it, but everything moves stiff/slow in the combat that bothers me. I don't know. I usually love Obsidian, but this looks like a decent step back.
It's really obvious with the mushroom enemies. The sword keeps hitting them and there is barely any reaction. even when the player does a power strike or whatever it is. feels like if you hit a moose with a chopstick

I'll admit the tone of PoE2 was somewhat dark, as far as the *story and narrative* go, but the world itself (and setting as an extension of that) has always been rather vibrant, fantastical, and light hearted. People still play Skyrim a decade later and this (while it looks a bit janky on the surface) reminds me of Skyrim's combat, just improved in every way. There's a lot more going on, such as enemies reacting to your sword swings, parrying, switching between playstyles mid-combat, etc. I'm sure it will be entertaining enough to support the epic story Obsidian is bound to push out.
You simply have to embrace the obvious fact that New Vegas was a one of a kind phenomenon that won't happen again so you can be more open to Obsidian's modern creations.

The combat looks super jank. Looks like what Skyrim would be like if it was released 5 years ago. Darktide and Vermintide 2 have really set the bar for what to expect for good 1st person melee combat and ranged combat for that matter. This gameplay doesn't cut it. Not even close imo.

They call th melee combat to "snappy" It looks floaty as hell, just like the Outer Worlds. Too bad most devs that made Obsidian good in the days left years ago, just after New Vegas, release
RPGs like this are notorious for having weak feeling combat in general; look at the Elder Scrolls, Gothic, or Witcher series. The only decent ones I've seen are Dragon's Dogma and maybe Kingdoms of Amalur, and even those have less in common with this or TES. I don't think there are really any games out there that come close to the feeling of the early TES games (Daggerfall and Morrowind) while having better combat.
