I've Played 20 Hours of Avowed (Early Review)

- Опубліковано 21 лис 2024
- This week we got an early look at Obsidian's upcoming fantasy RPG. I didn't have much in the way of expectations prior - but after playing the game - I'm VERY impressed. Avowed looks to be shaping up great, can't wait to see the entire thing.
Seeing a lot of regular questions/comments so figure I'll answer a few:
- Yes, there is third person camera. It's a toggle option in the menu. I tried it briefly, preferred 1st, and swapped back. Seemed fine though.
- No enemy respawns from what I saw. There could be some mechanic later on, but every POI I cleared remained empty through the entire play session.
- The UI is indeed off putting. That was my initial reaction at least, I got use to it and in the end wasn't all that bothered.
- Dialog seems fine, although as mentioned in the video it's all the way near the bottom of my priority list. The top being combat that feels good, an immersive world to explore, and things to discover. All of which I felt the game did well.
It's only a preview, so I'm reserving final judgements for the full release. But so far, I really like the game. Can't wait to play more.
Is the character creator nda ed because top surgery scars, no curves for the female body? Or other censorship/woke/dei related usual nonsense?
Hope there is romance options and I can bang a fish person.
Fuck UA-cam and the 57 second ads and censorship. Fucken evil cunts!!!
Obisidian is one of my favorite developers. I am very happy to hear their streak of making good games is going strong. Im officially hyped.
Yep. Was a bit worried looking at one of their last gameplay trailers but its starting to look pretty good. Can't wait to return to eora in the first person for once
i dunno if they really ever had a streak even though their high points are like easily being the best at what they do
@@bigbastard7582 Yeah Im thinking the same.....after this video, the game looks and feels really nice!
@@molnet999it’s a streak
@@molnet999their last 5 games are all highly rated and this looks to keep that track going.
Pillars of Eternity 1 & 2
South Park Stick of Truth
The Outer Worlds
Grounded
Pentiment
Avowed
Thanks for putting this on my map! I've heard of it, but had no idea of any details.
I was ignoring this but after this preview, I am very much looking forward to trying it, looks great
imagine trusting shilltubers after Vei;guard..
@@Gungrave123 I made exactly 0 videos covering Veilguard.
@@Gungrave123 imagine different people enjoying different things, Veilguard is btw next on my list as soon as I finish Star Wars: Outlaws, hate to break your bubble
@@Gungrave123 🤡🤡🤡
@@Gungrave123Which shilltubers? The ones who sung its praises or the ones who cried woke? It could easily be said that either side pandered to a certain crowd, especially after it's come out how easy it is to pay off commentators to push a specific point of view or topic.
The whole "I don't agree with you so you must be a shill" is old, and has been since even before TotalBiscuit and Jim Sterling covered the nonsense.
As a backer and follower of the original Pillars of Eternity since it's literal announcement, I feel a sense of great joy every time I see the world flourishing.
Can't wait.
Same, I was worried for a while but it's looking good. Still hope they go full BG3 for their next game in this setting though. PoE3 would be a perfect nod lmao.
I was also a backer of that, thinking I'd like it since I LOVED Dragon Age Origins, but I never made it more than an hour. I just could not get into it. Too many +1 this and -1 that. Maybe I should give it another try, but other than DAO, no other turn based/RTwP game has ever interested me.
Wait is this game set in the same world as POE? That might actually make me more interested in this. I loved both POE games.
Same, ive 1500 hours in each of those games and the music (and voice actors) live rent free in my dreams, lol.
@@kageroux1193 Not only is it in the same world as PoE. It takes place not long after PoE2, and from what I heard, Avowed references events and people from it. IIRC it's one of the main reasons/story points the MC in Avowed is forced to be a Godlike.
I'm excited about the open zones vs. open world. I feel like we have kind of peaked with open worlds with games like RDR2 and Elden Ring. I think that as games get more and more graphically demanding, it makes more sense to have smaller, densely packed zones over a buggy and horribly optimized open world. I am so pumped for this game!
Or make them less graphically demanding so the gameplay can actually be good.
@jb8935 oh for sure! I'd take good gameplay over good graphics, any day!
Open Zones > Open World
You don't have worry about graphics all if the art style is good and the art style could also be less demanding depending on how it's done. My favorite example is okami, it's a ps2 game but it's art style holds true today, even with it being old now
Fuck UA-cam and the 57 second ads and censorship. Fucken evil cunts!!!
Previews are glowing across the board. I didnt expect this not gunna lie
Just wait until someone discovers some woke aspect of the game, which will trigger the anti-woke crowd and they will descend upon every youtuber who dared partaking in the preview and are obviously shilling for the game, if they happen to like it.
RIGHT!!!😂😂
Obsidian makes fantastic games, I definitely expected this. Aside from Alpha Protocol they've never really missed. Besides obviously New Vegas they've just always kinda flown under the radar but their games are almost always great and this looks to be their magnum opus
@@GrippeeTV I'm hoping this can live up to or eclipse New Vegas. Outer Worlds didn't quite reach that mark for me.
I significatly prefer a smaller scope when it comes to the overall sqaure footage of the game zone with way more denstiy, I hate the generic push toward make it big and bland and run for 5 minutes with nothing to see except that far off point of intrest that once there is a smaller detailed experience, just make it all "smaller" but make each moment note worthy, I miss the days where the camera wasnt even in our control, imagine the designers actually having shot design for the entire game, each scene, every moment thought out like a movie, the angle, the framing, specifically rendering the background at one ceartin angle to solicit the excat emotion they want the player to feel in that moment, this is way more atmospheric in my opinion and I am all for any steps back in this direction
for sure brother . the same i was feeling when I played ghost of tsushima.. very big world but pretty much nothing to do. same old enemies to kill and little to none exploration. rather smaller scope but bigger content :D.
I disagree with the second point. Everything doesn't need to be a movie. I hate when a game cost an arm and is just a movie with some interaction and just 20 hours of gameplay. Make games bigger and better, short games are good but I want to lose myself I the world, I don't want to see a movie, I want to be immersed without having a cutscene crashing on my screen
Might as well remove your eyeballs and put rose colored glass spheres in the empty sockets LMAO
@@Erick-tv8oq lol true bro is delulu
Everything you were saying in this review is what I wanted a skyrim that is more story based I am so hyped for this now thank you for this preview.
Looks awesome! Can't stop winning with Game Pass.
For me this would be the first game on pass to interest me, i guess I will buy it individually... Eventually
Pillars of Eternity is amazing. Can't wait to play this.
So they took The Outer Worlds formula and brought it into the Pillars of Eternity world? I'm totally into this game!
Which was basically just their New Vegas formula haha
@@GrippeeTV And these guys made that game too.
The alchemist blowing himself up reminds me of the wizard falling from the sky in morrowind lol
I started with Avowed on my wishlist... then I took it off after the second set of trailers/previews. Now, after this preview, it's back on the list and I can't wait to try it out!
This game looks fantastic, and with Obsidian’s track record, this is a must buy.
I’m excited for this, since Skyrim is too told to enjoy and Bethesda can’t be trusted to make a good elder scrolls 6, this will be the best game of this type to play for the next decade.
Too old? To enjoy? People play games from the 90s
Modded Skyrim matches any current Triple A title
You can't play a game for a decade if the game only has 40 hours of gameplay I'm glad PlayStation didn't get it.
@ what is the gripe? Is it graphics? Gameplay? I’m curious what this person says is the problem with age. Even vanilla is enjoyable. Modded it’s great. Combat isn’t amazing but can be fun.
@ the complaint was that it’s too old, not that they had already beaten it too many times.
I freaking love Pillars series and have high hopes for Avowed
My two favorite games of all time are made by Obsidian, but they've had a shaky time lately, so I've been skeptical of this game. It's good to hear some positive impressions.
"Shaky time"? Pretty much all their games have been critically praised, their most recent games being Pentiment, Grounded, and Outer Worlds, all of which were a critical and financial successes.
@ I have enjoyed those games, but they aren’t at the level of their older games. I was referring both to the dip in quality of their recent games(which again, I still like them) and more than that, the turmoil within the company. They’ve had their struggles with the financial side of things, as well as lay offs and outside pressure stemming from the Microsoft acquisition. I’m glad they are in a more stable place because of that deal, but like with so many of Microsoft’s recent acquisitions, they seem to have managerial issues that leave them without focus and direction.
@@eamk887ngl critically praised means nothing when most big gaming media is well known for taking bribes for good reviews
The writing ,narrative and rpg elements in pentiment were amazing. Seems like you didn't play that one then.
@@idkdude2377 dip in quality? huh?
I’m hesitant about how many zones there are. You only saw one so I just hope this isn’t like Dragons Dogma 2 where you leave the checkpoint town, thinking “Wow, that was a great starter zone, can’t wait to see the rest of the game!” Only to realize that that was 70% of the game finished.
Was never excited for this since im not a big fan of 1st person melee but seeing the gameplay now.. this has my full attention.
It has third person too
you can Turn off any UI options in the menu btw...
Idk why all games don't do this it can't be that hard to implement right?
So you can turn off the enemy nameplates above their head and the damage numbers? that's great :P
I'm sure there will be a mod in addition for this, but UI scaling would be nice. Sometimes the UI portions are fine,
they are just too large, so if they could be scaled down a bit, it would be less glaring or intrusive.
Damn dude, looking forward to this one now for sure.
Id been so hit an miss on this game. this video has sold me. This is my kind of game. however I do hope some of the loot is random be it stat or items, I hate it when everyone who opens the same chest gets same gear, sure its a single player rpg, but you want to have stories to tell with friends and talk back and forth.
For me, the main spell that I am gonna use is cast GUN, that Good Ole American magic 🤣 - 12:50
Blackpowder Wizard 🤘
I cast gunnn, prepare to meet gawwwwd
Fasho. 2a metal droplets rain upon thee with the speed and force of lightening striking from thine palms
The fact that this game has a flintlock musket has me sold
Thank you. I would love to see a 3rd person view option in the game. If the publiser don´t implement it from the beginning then I hope we will get some mods for in the near future after the release.
There is third person already!
@@brickweathertop7907 Thank you. Nice!
They have third person but they NEED to show that combat idc if it’s not impressive like that I need to see
I am ashamed. I was too harsh toward this game. Now, its looking great
It's okay my friend, you got wrapped up in the sensation that many did. It was frustrating to see so many be aggressively critical up until now, as I have been a big Obsidian fan since the Xbox 360/ PS3. I'm just glad you have a different perspective now! Let's wish the game to have a strong launch and stick the landing, cheers!
Oh, thank the gods. The first time they showed or allowed actual gameplay, it looked terrible. It shattered any hope I had for this being a competent piece of media. I'm so happy to hear your feedback being positive.
Thankfully, Obsidian has been very good with responding to concern and feedback with Avowed.
The trailer we got at the 2023 Showcase was panned for its visuals, and they immediately stated it was Pre-Alpha footage and it would look better in future trailers. And it did.
The first look at combat was very lacklustre, like you stated, and they responded by stating that they'd work on refining it. And they have.
Lastly, its getting side-eyed for the 30FPS on console. The games director just stated that 30FPS is the bare minimum they're going for and they want to launch it at 60FPS. Here's hoping they pull that off in time
@@thewielder3445 , I appreciate you informing me of their response, which I was unaware of. However, it does look like they did take people's concerns into consideration. The HUD looks better than it first did, or from what I remember.
Though I'm not affected by console performance, having left that fight nigh a decade ago, I do always hope it is adequate for their users. I hope they can nail 60fps, but I wonder how much they must carve-out to make that possible.
I've been anxiously waiting this for 4.5 years, ever since I saw the clip of that arrow that flew forever and killed that skelly. LOL! I just love Obsidian. They are my favorite dev studio by far. They can't make a bad game. Everything is just so good and well done.
As a long-time fan of Obsidian and a backer of both PoE1 and 2 this makes me absolutely overjoyed. Both of those games hold a special place in my heart (Especially PoE 1) and to hear that a game that I was worried would tarnish Obsidian's reputation is incredibly good (Especially in a time where Dragon Age got a huge shit taken on it), is an unexpected and incredibly welcomed surprise. Can't wait to play. I just pray to all that is holy, that the writing is as good as the other facets of the game you mentioned.
Happy to see this is coming along nicely. Love Obsidian, but I haven't been wowed by what I've seen so far with Avowed.
Thanks for the preview, i was initially put off by the change in art direction but after watching your preview and some new gameplay im really looking forward to this game. Seems to be exactly what iwant smaller zone, no openworld jam packed good combat thank again!
I was hyped for this at the first video for the game! I then changed my mind when they changed the graphical look of the game! I am now hyped again because of your review! I love the Pillars Universe!
Been looking forward to this. Glad to hear you didn't have too many complaints. Obs always ends up doing a pretty good job so I'm not all that surprised.
I wasn't excited for this game after hearing they pretty much changed the whole thing years ago but looking at this gameplay it actually looks pretty good. Gonna check it out when it comes out.
Glad, that your impression of this game, i anticipate quite a lot, is a good one. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and insights!
At first seeing this game I was worried, but as we get closer, Obsidian is proving this to be a good game. Also love the settings to adjust your own immersion level and difficulty.
I have been looking for something with good sword and shield gameplay looking forward to this!
22:22 This is a very important point from a long term perspective. Although Avowed isn't a properly 'open world' game, the Stolen lands ought to be dynamic for both lore and immersion purposes. A static world may greatly hamper the experience for many players.
So, I suppose dialogue, exploration, and character choices will be the things that'll lead the way for the game. But an immersive world outside of text and speech should also be a priority imo.
This game is EXACTLY up my alley, and I am very excited for this one to come out. The comparison to Skyrim was all I needed to hear.
I so badly wish this game was co-op. Its beautiful, It would be nice to play with a few other people though.
wow bears… how creative
I’ve been looking forward to this. I’m glad they’ve kept it lowkey. Looking forward to more as we get closer to release.
The good news just kept coming! Game is looking great.
This game clicked with me when I first saw it, seeing how good it is, and, by the looks of it so far, Jam packed with content, I'm super excited. Nah we will not play this with Game Pass, we will be buying and playing definitely!
Smaller Scale with more well-crafted detailed area world is better then large empty autogenerated world. Looks great!
Yeh. Like many others, it seems, I was lukewarm about this game but you've totally convinced me. Feels/looks like an older RPG style but that's a real good thing these days.
I have seen so many glowing reviews coming out today. This is my goty 2025. I know it already. Pre-ordered the best edition. Obsidian has earned this from me.
A preview is not a review.
@paulszki 20 hours playing the game from someone who's opinion I trust is review enough.
@@kolai1987 sure, you can call a chair a "table" but that doesn't make it a table. It's still a chair. You said "many glowing reviews". There are none. It's people talking about a game they've played for a bit, but not to completion.
I'm roorting for the game myself but reviews aren't out yet. Words have meaning.
Great video! My interest for the game certainly has become positive.
Glad to see some positive buzz starting for this game. Cannot wait to get my hands on it!
Looks insanely cool - definitely one that will grab and keep my attention for a long time.
I’m sold. I’ve been waiting for this one.
I love the idea of hubs/ zones rather than the massive world of Skyrim
For me, looking back, Skyrim kinda doesn't set a high bar.. like all Bethesda games, mods were what made the game addicting for me. Sparsely populated gigantic open worlds just don't do it for me
As someone that is very much invested into the lore of Eora...
Mmmh, I am worried about some details but we will see.
I’ve been searching far and wide for a game with silly rag doll physics like Skyrim. Watching you shield bash those enemies to have them get shunted back has gotten me so pumped for this game! Hope there are more force spells to throw the enemies around!
My most anticipated game of 2025 for sure.
Hey this game looks pretty good, other UA-camrs like Mr Matty didnt even go that in depth in the game. This was a very good preview of the game and got me interested very much
Excited to play it, eora is my favorite game world so its really nice to be able to see some of it from a new perspective. I do hope we get more crpgs in the world at some point but if the world lives on and has decent gameplay to go along with i will always be there.
Looking forward to another banger from Obsidian. This is looking great so far!
I'm so happy about this good news. Now I can't wait to play it and get the Elder Scrolls etch taken care of.
This game looks so insanely good. I am hyped, which makes me nervous as a habit, which sucks because this genuinely looks really good.
i feel much more solid about this game now, when they said not open world i was worried but it might as well be open world because the first zone is pretty huge.
i find it very immersion breaking when i cant dive underwater (starfield) but not only did they let you dive, they made underwater content and decoration as well! im a huge sucker for (good) underwater content, so im excited!
Just dont preorder, wait like 2 weeks past release for real reviews and then decide
...or just try it out on Game Pass and think for yourself.
Given how subjective taste is, I don't know why anyone makes decisions based on what a reviewer says.
I watch gameplay. Reviews don’t always match what the players like. It’s been a while, but I’ve purchased games that reviewed well, only to find out I didn’t like them, and vice versa.
Gamepass baaaaaabeeeeee
Ok, I will pre-order. Thanks for the advice, friend 🤝
....that's only with EA, Ubisoft and blizzard games dude.
So February we have Avowed, MH wilds and Kingdom Come 2 ? Welcome to the Gauntlet !
i honestly can't fucking wait for this.. especially crimson desert
I have been optimistic about Avowed, this is good news.
Though "Open zone" bring me Starfield flashbacks...they were too open
He mentioned 35 named locations just in the first zone, doesn't look like it will be Starfield-like empty.
I’m beyond excited for this game. Hoping this will curb that ES6 craving.
This is looking great! looking forward to this one so much now!
Really happy about this. Was worried i wouldnt have any fantasy rpgs to play next year.
there desperately needs to be more first person fantasy combat games. I'm so excited for this one.
As a massive fan of Pillars of Eternity, I can't wait for this game. Obsidian rule.
I wanted to wait for this game to come out and make myself a picture of it.
But now that some of the youtubers got some early copys and hours into the game, i wanted to see what its really like.
Because the trailer confused me more than not.
I have to say i am pleased to hear that and now i want to play it aswell.
This was the best review out so far
I loved Pillars of Eternity. To be able to play a 3D action version of the world is a god send. Don't need a 10/10 greatest and biggest RPG ever, just give me a solid role playing experience!
My score for this game based on what I've seen was a 6.5-7. Glad to hear it might be better than that. Remaining skeptical but on a more positive note 🤣
Looks dope. Wishlisted.
Why does blue dude look like a concord character?....
The blue guy looks exactly like his fellow blue guys in the previous games
Something about the art style and the graphic concepts feels wrong with this game, it doesn't mix together... I don't know, it does not look appealing to me at all. I will try tho, thx to gamepass!
dei graphics
I guess it is a genetic defect. Not your fault.
@ Maybe lol
@@minx8334 was your brain replaced with a dirty dish rag at birth?
Looks fine to me.
One of the most appealing things is how the UI doesn’t look like it was built with only consoles in mind. That’s one of my biggest peeves with modern games.
So true!
Hopefully it'll be better than the painfully average outer worlds.
I personally liked The Outer Worlds for what it did offer, but I agree it was a bit one note. However I don't think I would say it was painful in any regard.
Great video and it's looking promising 👌 Sounds weird but I'm quite glad to see Spiders too lol So many games avoiding them now but I actually look forward to them personally.
wait..... OBSIDIAN, you say? So basically "Everything we love about Bethesda games without all the crap from laziness and corporate bs?" Well yeah! That sounds appealing!
Before this video i am avoiding this game. But now i would like to try it
Appreciate that they incorporated a third-person mode. It helps to switch to it when fighting spiders because of my arachnophobia. It would be a bonus if there was a filter like in Hogwarts Legacy.
On a side note, I hope there is summoning as well. Always loved using summons and a ranged spec in these types of games.
I know a way to fight the arachnophobia. Play Dark Messiah of Might and Magic. You will understand what Im talking about when the time comes. It was like a shock therapy for me.
So happy to hear this. Plus it’s looks great and a place you want to explore. And the map areas look big enough and open within itself.
This looks amazing! Exciting times
Wow, this just went to the top of my list!
Immediate feedback: chest lids should fling open with a swosh and a bonk and the chest should wiggle back and forth once or twice. Running at them in superspeed only to slightly lift them is major blue balling.
Really sad we don't have classes like Paladin, Priest, Cipher, and Druid in Avowed. They were a lot of fun to play in PoE 2
That musket-play looks dope ngl
PoE 1&2 are some of my favourite games of all time. I have been excited for this game for so long now, and from the looks of it I wont be disappointed. I know a lot of people didn't like the Outer Worlds, but I loved it and Avowed looks like it has a similar structure with how the open zones work. However it definitely looks like Avowed is going to be much longer, which is expected now that they have Microsoft funding them.
I gotta say being forced to be a Godlike is not what I expected, and no dedicated psionic or chanter class abilities is a bit disappointing, but it still looks amazing. Including the PoE stats, gear, and enchantment systems is really nice.
I'd been looking forward to it, picturing as a mix of Greedfall and Skyrim - It WAS going to be a Day1 purchase but for the price hike. While $10 won't break me, the $70 price tag we're seeing for Avowed and DA:Veilguard is a HORRIBLE threshold. I remember when games jumped from $20 to $40 and then to $60 and I don't think enough people are speaking up about it.
I'll likely buy both games... when they're on Steam/XBox sales
For someone like me that can't stay focused in huge open world games like AC or Skyrim, having a more focused and directed experience is so refreshing to me in an RPG. This and Monster Hunter are my two most anticipated games of 2025.
Skyrim and that new harry potter game had a baby
And their grandparents are poe1 ans poe2
You can use a spear, I'm sold. I think they said there's 3 zones in total. Foresty, Ice, Desert.
I'm very excited about the "open zones" rather than "open world". Black Myth Wukong did this perfectly (minus the invisible walls) and it was great. My desire for giant open worlds has decreased over the years
this and stalker have been my most awaited games for a loooooooong time, i think they announced avowed like 8 years ago or somthing. i hope the time reflects and shows other developers its better to take your time and make a good product instead of rushing somthing out.
I was very skeptical about this game but this preview gave me some hope. Might be the rare case where the game is actually better in reality then how it looked in trailers.
always found skyrim too open and shallow and boring, have never understood how its such a cultural juggernaut. so this sounds great!
That UI looks like those memes where there's like 50 different game HUDs covering the entire screen.
