One bottle not mentioned is The Sassenach blended whisky. It seems that the actor Sam Heughan (Jamie Fraser, Outlander) had a lot of input. Great video and I always enjoy the humour, keep them coming.
Cheers for this Jeff, a good breakdown of celebrity whiskies. Sounds like this one is not a flop, maybe not worth the full price sure but at least it's tasty. Offerman Editions are at the height of this list and I can't see them being toppled for now. Slap on
Great video Mr. Slapper! On the thumbnail I only noticed the one true Slap-brity in the middle, but appearantly the two others hope they once will deserve their star on the Malty Boulevard. And as always: briliant editing❤ Slàinte mhath
It is a good sandwich to be between and that is just the whisky bottles! Proud that no one is as big slapper as in... I think. Cheers and Slàinte mhath
Great video Jeff! I haven't tried any celebrity whiskies. Just because a celebrity is behind it doesn't mean I am willing to pay extra for it. The Sir Davis seems to be one of the better celebrity offerings, but I can buy a good rye whiskey much cheaper. Earlier on in my journey I almost bought the Proper 12 as it was on sale, but then read and watched some reviews and the overwhelming consensus was, "don't buy". A celebrity would have to get behind a good whisky and release it at a good price to get me interested. Cheers!
@@JeffWhisky I've tried several ryes with different rye mash bill content. The MGP rye with 95% rye in the mash bill is used by a number of brands and is probably what most people associate with the flavour profile of rye whiskey. I quite like the Bulleit brand; it has been aged a bit longer than some of the others like Redemption, which is a bit harsh, and it is reasonably priced in my market. Bulleit Rye reminds me of rye sourdough bread and is quite spicy with some licorice and eucalyptus notes. At the other end of the rye spectrum is Rittenhouse Rye which is 51% rye, 37% corn, and 12% malted barley. This is bottled in bond, so 50% ABV and aged for at least 4 years. To me this tastes like Christmas cake without the icing. Very fruity and baking spices. It is reported to be a good rye for bourbon drinkers. Wild Turkey rye has a similar mash bill to Rittenhouse. I've only tried the standard 40% one which is just so-so, but they also do a 101 version which unfortunately isn't available here. It may be available in your market though. The other one I'm enjoying at the moment is Widow Jane Rye Oak & Applewood. I don't know the mash bill of this one, but they use fresh cut applewood staves in the barrels during the aging process which adds apple sweetness and balances out some of the rye spiciness. Hope this helps you on your Rye dabbling journey. Cheers!
Thanks - really interesting video. I agree the Offerman Lagavulin is the only one with some authenticity. I confess that I quite liked the Haig Club as a cocktail mixer - it felt in between vodka and whisky, which worked for me in that context. But I never bought a second bottle…
Cheers for watching Paul, can't see anything wrong with a Haig Club mixer. I never tried it like that but can see the whole middle ground between vodka and whisky vibe. What has become your cocktail replacement from Haig?
@@JeffWhisky typically I use Jameson Original for that. But also I have a bottle of the Hive from Wemyss Malts, which I didn’t get on with neat, but is really nice as a mixer - though too expensive for me to have bought as a mixer. Though it’s been a while now - I should try another dram to see if it’s changed or I’ve changed.
Exceptional video. Glad to see you making more of these deep dives as your thoughts are respected and valued. If there is authenticity and credibility then these bottles become an interesting facet of the industry. Otherwise it is just another form of marketing. Kanpai 🥃🥃🥃
Thanks Mac, really love making this kind of video, got plans for another 3 for this year... Well at least an idea 😂 authenticity certainly is the key! Cheers
Good one again, Jeff! Never bought a whisky because of the celebrity endorsement, However got a bottle of Proper Twelve before I knew a MMA fighter had something to do with it.
Cheers Major Nut! What was your thoughts on Proper Twelve? I have not had the chance to have a real proper sit down with it but had a couple of quick drams of it.
@@JeffWhisky Well, it is a few years ago I had it but what I can remember it was a decent Irish dram, however nothing special. I haven't replaced it. A friend liked it very much, but he drinks his whisky with alot of ice and tonic. 😄
Celebrity endorsement of any products don't tend to carry much weight with me. The Lagavulin/Offerman collaboration was the only one that captured my attention due to how it evolved. On the other hand whisky celebrity endorsements / collaborations capture more of my attention; think the Aqvavitae releases. I'm more apt to take a punt on one of those releases vs. something promoted by a former Destiny's Child singer.
@@TJO1913 now I don't remember Roy being in Destiny's child but I don't doubt it. Cheers for the conversation is there any celebrities that you would be tempted by?
Great video. One word of caution. This isn’t a STRAIGHT American Rye. That means it could contain sugar, additives, color and chemicals without telling you
Cheers Steveno! Yeah it was an interesting point I came across when looking into why they are calling it "whisky" without the E as well. Don't think additives have been added going by Bill Lumsden but quite possibly have colouring added. Cheers.
The only one I heard of out of that list was Virginia Black which is why I had to include the Kendrick Lamar slaps! So many Celeb bottles out there, with few gems from the look of it. Cheers!
Brothers Bond is probably the only one that is passable. I'm not a big fan but at least you don't have to drain pour it. OMG that Travellers is a mix with cheap Canadian Mist in with bourbon. OMG
I have been wanting to try Blackened but always feels a little pricey, is there a whisky you would compare it to? Never heard of Traveller so looking into it! Cheers Pete
@@JeffWhisky the one I have is rye finished in Madeira casks and it's a cracker. Very fruity and the spice counteracts what would otherwise be an overly sweet palate. Traveller is Chris Stapleton's blended whiskey, it cost me around $30 and at that price it's OK.
Jeff, the reason why the SirDavis tastes of cherries and ginger cakes has nothing to do with the rye (which is what you seemed to imply), but everything to do with the fact that it's matured in fresh Ex-Sherry casks !!!
Cheers David, yeah completely understand that so thought by tackling it as a whole would be more accessible than just the one whisky. Is there any celebrity endorsement you think could tempt you? Cheers
@@JeffWhiskyIndeed. Sadly both these bottles are so expensive in the UK. Are either Hibiki or SirDavis better than 2 bottles of Ledaig 10? ...unless you want a Infinity Bottle 😀
Appreciate both yours and Vin's take on this bottle but i'm not a fan of celeb endorsements so wont be buying this. Also its way too expensive and rye is not my jam. Nice looking bottle though. Cheers Jeff. Great vid as always mate.
Certainly sounds like a bottle that is not for you and that is completely fine! Cheers for watching anyway, is there any celebrity who could make you tempted?
Great video, im sure plenty of people try whisky because of these ties but not sure how many stay if the whisky is poor. The biggest cash grab in my opinion would be titanic whisky but thats not quite the same thing.
That is a really good point Scott and something I wish I thought of and included! Yeah is the big drop of bad ties in putting more people off whisky than bringing them in? Cheers.
Not normally a rye man myself aswell, but Sirdavis is actually not too bad. Easy drinker when you fancy a little change from single malt. Probably overpriced though. One of the best looking bottles I own.
Bang on the money Phil, this is a super approachable Rye which I can only assume is from the mash bill. I have reached for it twice since doing this review which is quite rare! Have you dabbled in any other Ryes you have enjoyed? Cheers!
@@JeffWhisky the only other rye whisky I have enjoyed was a Fielden. It was drinkable much like the Sirdavis. But then you go back to a nice sherry cask single malt and wash away your rye sins 😄
I really enjoyed the Guinness cask Lagavulin. However I haven't enjoyed any other Offerman or any other celebrity whiskey I've had. I just ignore them now. I will bunker any Guinness cask I find
Yeah think that was the best release, well from what I have tried it was. Good luck with your guinness cask hoard, hopefully you manage to grab more bottles! Cheers.
You know that Makers Mark is a wheated bourbon, right? :) There is no rye in Makers Mark. Sir Davis has no wheat in its mash bill either :) Thx for the video though, really fun :)
Yeah, Makers Mark is one of my all time favourites as love wheated bourbons but something in the rye really reminded me of it. Maybe it was the softer notes? Cheers for watching and glad to have you here! Cheers

If you found a positive review for Longbranch I'd hate to know who that is. Longbranch is the bourbon equivalent of Proper 12. Complete crap. And I'm kind compared to others.

There is that Sassenach bottle which does the rounds on social media all the time. Never tried it and don't plan too!
Great to hear your thoughts on this one Jeff!
Cheers for watching Vin and also for the samples and tasty b-roll! Feel like I am very much in agreement with your thoughts on it!
I know two people who brought it and they are very impressed and said it is better than other ryes at similar prices. Will need to try it soon.
It certainly is not a bad rye whisky and can see it out performing some of the cheaper ones I have tried. Have you tried it yet? Cheers.
